It was 4 PM when we arrived, wasn't very busy, so we decided to sit outside on the deck rather than inside. Each table has its own umbrella, which was nice because it did drizzle a little while we were eating. Our waitress was very nice and greeted us shortly after we sat down. She took our drink order. My wife had an iced tea, and I ordered the Upside Down Mule, a refreshing mix of Tito's, pineapple purée, and ginger beer. The drink was okay, but even though it was described as having pineapple purée, I really couldn't taste any pineapple. The funny thing was when I went to pick up the mug by the handle, the handle came right off! I mentioned it to our waitress, and she offered to get me a new cup, but I was fine using the cup without the handle. For dinner, my wife ordered the 1/2-pound shrimp, Baltimore style--onions, potatoes, Old Bay and butter, with an extra $3 charge. I ordered the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake for $44, described as a fresh, no-filler jumbo lump crab cake. It came with fried Brussels sprouts and an additional side, which I chose as the Sweet Corn Summer Salad--charred sweet corn, confit tomato, fried black beans, roasted red pepper and cilantro over romaine lettuce, cotija cheese, creamy lime dressing and fried tortilla strips. I noticed that my salad had green peppers instead of red peppers. Since I cannot eat green peppers, I asked our waitress about it. She told me that was how it comes. However, the menu specifically says roasted red pepper, not green pepper. This is something the restaurant really needs to correct, either on the menu or with the kitchen, so someone doesn't order the dish expecting red peppers and end up with something they cannot eat. I caught it dyer my first bite eating. Then came another issue. My wife's dinner came out, but my meal wasn't ready. She waited for me, and I finally told her to go ahead and eat before her food got cold. About 10 minutes later, my meal finally came out. I don't understand why both meals didn't come out together. We weren't ordering crabs or something that would obviously come out when ready. We were ordering two regular dinner entrées, and the restaurant wasn't busy. Ten minutes is a long time between two meals, especially when one person is sitting there waiting while the other is eating. When my meal finally arrived, everything looked good, but I was disappointed with the size of the crab cake. For $44, and being listed as a dinner entrée rather than a sandwich, I expected a much larger crab cake. What makes this even more disappointing is that a picture of the dinner on their website shows two crab cakes, while the crab cake sandwiches pictured on the website were actually larger than the single crab cake I received with my dinner. I understand pictures can sometimes be for presentation purposes, but there was a pretty big difference between what I saw online and what was actually served. More importantly, the crab cake needed to be cooked a little longer. It should have had more browning on the outside not just shack some old bay on it, and the food needed to be hot. The crab cake was only warm, and even the Brussels sprouts were just lukewarm. The food itself had good flavor, but there were several things that need some cleaning up. $44 is a lot for a 4-ounce crab cake, especially when it isn't served hot and the Brussels sprouts are lukewarm. Overall, the meal was ok, but we expected more for the prices, we eat out a lot and don't mind paying for good food! The service was friendly, but the timing of the meals, the temperature of the food, the size of the crab cake, and the issue with the peppers are things the restaurant should address. And then charge 3% for a credit card fee and not even tell us. Would have been 4-5 stars without issues.

I was surprised when she told me it would be $40 to add the crab cake, on top of the $17 BLT. At that price, I decided to order the BLT and the crab balls instead. I put two of the crab balls on my sandwich and we ate the other two separately. Overall, the food was good. My wife really enjoyed her grilled shrimp and rice. My BLT had a nice amount of bacon, but it had way too much lettuce and only one small slice of tomato. Once I removed some of the lettuce and added two of the crab balls to the sandwich, it was actually much better. The crab balls were good, but I still have a hard time understanding $40 to add a crab cake to a $17 BLT. I could see paying around $12 for a nice-sized crab cake added to a sandwich, but $40 seems extremely high. The best part of the experience was definitely the location. Sitting outside on the dock, enjoying the water and having dinner was very nice. Afterward, my wife and I walked out on the dock and watched the sunset. That's the kind of setting that makes you want to sit back and stay awhile.

It just has a fun waterfront tavern atmosphere. You're not coming for fine dining, but there is good attention to detail on your food and the portions are fair. I would say the only hit to watch out for is on a nice summer day the parking lot can get pretty crowded. They have great happy hour specials in the off-season to lure folks in here. In this case, at the Dockside Restaurant & Sports Bar at 421 Deale Road in Maryland, the food was mostly wonderful, and the prices were more than reasonable for this economy. What prevents Dockside from receiving at least four stars was primarily the service. Two orders of fries, one sweet potato and one regular, weren't hot; and although our waitress reluctantly brought one of the orders back to exchange it for a new batch, the fries didn't taste any warmer. Our other host ordered his crabcake lightly-fried, only for it to be brought out broiled. He still enjoyed it, but it wasn't exactly what he wanted or ordered. By the end of the meal, it became obvious that, if we return, we need to ask for Sarah, who, although she was tending the bar and wasn't even our waitress, still brought one of our neighbors a fresh cup of Pepsi Zero that she could take on our return trip home. Sarah also exhibited a great sense of humor, an attentiveness and an attention to detail, and, most importantly, remembered with pleasure our hosts, who have dined there frequently. Apart from the pumpkin cheesecake, which was so infused with nutmeg and pumpkin spice that even Linus from Peanuts couldn't have tasted the pumpkin, and the lukewarm fries, our meals were terrific. Suffice it to say that the cream of crab soup is not the reason to go to this restaurant. The crab cakes were better than the soup but only marginally. There was a whole lot of filler in there and the crab mix was not thoroughly mixed up. One bite had a lot of crab, the next bite was all filler, the next was a mixture of the 2 - someone just did not take the time and effort to fully combine the ingredients well. Don't get me wrong, the crab cake was good, just not great. But the biggest downfall of this dish was the bun. The bun was much too big. It overwhelmed the crab cake; too much bread. Both my spouse and I took the crab cake off the bun and ate it naked. It was better that way. The best part of Harpers Waterfront is its location. The waterfront view is delightful and relaxing and pretty. The dining room is very nicely decorated and there is plenty of room between the tables. It is not a chain restaurant and that is a good thing too - you can tell that the owners have put a lot of great thought into the atmosphere and the "look" of the restaurant. Even the men's room is nicely furnished. The dining room is sophisticated yet natural and relaxed. The location on Turkey Point is a little secluded which makes you feel like you have happened upon a secret little place not known by many people. That is a plus here. For dessert we split a house made lemon strawberry cake with layers of cake, macerated strawberries and whipped cream. It was light and delicious and worth the calories. We'd get that again, too. All in all we had a great time and will return again.
