Rod and Reel, your Restaurant is beautiful and the renovations are very nice but nothing at all…read moresays Chesapeake Bay. The menu is small and stuffy with almost no nod to what's literally in your back yard... where are the fresh seafood dishes? No crab cake?? No fried oysters? No rockfish? If you want an upscale menu then Offer local food done well You should never call salads a starter... salad is not an appetizer! The crab bisque is neither bisque or crabby... it's thin and watery and zero flavor or crab...just awful the tuna carpaccio, knife cuts rough, no olive oil no lemon , again disappointing Tried the Oysters Rockefeller, these were good, The star of the menu is dessert, the crème brûlée lovely great service in the restaurant but the food in all three outlets is bad. I have to question the chefs taste level... where is he from ? It's clear he doesn't know local food or flavors

I didn't take any pics of the inside but it's new and really nice. We went on a cold Wednesday night and the dining room was completely empty. Ryan was our server and he was great. He was funny, light and gave honest recommendations when asked. Everything he co-signed on was spot on. The food came out fast and hot. We started off with the char-grilled octopus. The octopus rested on top of a red pepper romesco sauce and fingerling potatoes. The octopus was very tender and very flavorful. Wasn't a huge fan of the romesco, but overall I really enjoyed the dish. For my main I went with the Muscovy duck breast it came sliced and as a chou farci of duck confit, turnip, cider agra dolce. Very good. The cider Agra dolce had a little heat, but nothing over powering. Nice portion and well prepared. For dessert I went with the banana cheesecake. Not a fan, but my boyfriend loved it. To each their own with this one. I was expecting a slice of cheesecake with sliced banana caramelized sauce. The sauce was puréed and reminded me of baby food. Definitely not my favorite. All in all we truly enjoyed our meal and will absolutely be back soon.

A few weeks after moving to the DC region, my husband and I decided to make a trip out to…read moreChesapeake Beach just for the crab and the experience. On our first try, we got lost in DC and never found the correct freeway to get to the beach--3 hours wasted! Second try-- same deal. Finally, we got smart phones and figured out how to get East of DC. The following is our 100% factual experience. When we pulled into the dirt parking lot of Abner's Crab House, I could tell my husband was already re-thinking the our restaurant choice. The decor from the outside looks rustic and authentic so I talked him into getting lunch at Abner's (we're new to the East coast and just HAD to try some crabs...). We were seated outside near a tributary and some trash cans that were swarming with flies and smelled much worse than low-tide. There was one other table of people outside near us. At this point, I revealed to my husband that on the East Coast, people straight up crack and eat whole crabs (this offended his Mid-Western sensibilities) and he ordered a crab-cake sandwich. I ordered 6 whole crabs and our waitress taught me how to smash them with a mallot,"remove their lungs", and eat the meat. I was feeling VERY cave-woman at this point. Husband's face? Priceless. The food was nothing special to me, it was a new experience to eat crabs this way but I could not get over the smell of the trash cans and the flies. About half-way through our meal, the most surreal and bizarre thing happened. A little boy and his mother brought out a karaoke machine, set it up about 4 feet from us, and the mother started belting into the microphone. Since it was far too loud for me to hear my own thoughts, let alone speak with my husband: I continued my crab-smashing/lung removing lunch in silence. The next thing we know, the little boy puts on a top-hat and starts singing and dancing to several Michael Jackson songs. The performance was complete with crotch-grabs and moon-walking. Remember there was ONE other table of people sitting outside... Weirdest. Day. Ever.

The ambiance is nice and comfortable, 3 floors of historic memorabilia, my favorite pieces were the cool antique cash registers. The service was beyond exceptional! Our waitress Erin was very attentive and knowledgeable! She recommended the green fried tomatoes I was considering and boy they were nothing like I've ever had! So delicious! Packed with flavor! For dessert I had the seasonal peach cobbler made with fresh locally grown peaches! A-mazing!

We were seated immediately. For starters we ordered 2 crab dips, 2 orders of fried green tomatoes, & 2 orders of crispy wings (Old Bay). Our non-alcoholic beverages included Pepsi products (no Coca-Cola ), ginger ale but no ginger beer. All of the appetizers were on point with flavor & texture. Also the Old Bay chicken wings were not as salty as other places serve them. I ordered the crab cake sandwich & onion rings. I had to box my crab cake because the small plates filled me up. I heated it in a pan later with a little olive oil spray and it was good. Our generous shipmate took care of thei bill so I'm not sure if splitting was an option. This was my first visit but definitely not my last. I enjoyed the relaxed vibes and proximity to the resort & dock.
