I left Abner's feeling like the machines were definitely rigged...or at the very least, the timing was extremely suspicious. I came down over the weekend, and by Monday the machines were "hot," giving out receipts for spins over $40. Coincidentally, Mr. Abner's 60th birthday was being celebrated that same week, and the drawing from those receipts was scheduled for Tuesday...the day of his birthday celebration. Someone even hit the jackpot that day, which had everyone excited and ready to play. Then I came back on Wednesday, and suddenly there were no more receipts, no spins over $40, and the machines were completely dead. The difference was like night and day. After seeing that, I seriously question whether the machines or payouts are being adjusted. IM CONVINCED ... others as well. This is why folks leave and go across the street to Rod and Reel. Years ago, it used to be pretty good. Fair play... Abner's, why do this? Customers spend money and deserve a fair, transparent experience. Food is great... crabs are awesome. The machines?? Everything that we ordered was good. Our wait staff was really nice, and honest about our selections. I believe the special they had on crabs were 12/ $60 , unfortunately the crab quesadillas that were order took well over 30 mins to come out after all of the other items arrived at our table and it's the quickest meal that we ordered. I have been coming to this restaurant in Chesapeake Beach for years, which makes my experience last night especially disappointing. Our waitress was very nice, and I want to make it clear that my complaint is not about her. My issue is with how the manager handled my food complaint and the level of customer service I received. I ordered a seafood pot that was approximately $55 and was supposed to include two crab leg clusters. What I received was extremely disappointing. The crab legs were very small, about the size of my hand, and instead of what I understood to be two clusters, I received what appeared to be one small cluster along with a leg containing only a few sections. I ate some of the shrimp and clams from the pot, but I was very dissatisfied with the crab legs, so I asked my waitress to send that portion back. She took it to the manager. I was not expecting the entire meal to be removed from my bill because I had eaten some of the other seafood, but I did expect a fair adjustment for the crab legs that I returned and did not eat. My total bill was approximately $85, and the manager only removed $5. When I questioned this, he told me that I could have taken the crab legs home and spoke as though taking $5 off my bill was doing me a favor. His attitude came across as rude, sarcastic, and dismissive. I remained respectful throughout the conversation and did not disrespect him. What bothered me the most was not simply the food--it was the way the situation was handled. After being a customer for years, I did not expect to be spoken to that way when bringing up a legitimate concern about an order. I left feeling that my concerns were not taken seriously and that I was treated unfairly. Based on this experience, I would not recommend ordering the crab leg seafood pot, and unfortunately, I do not plan to return. Good customer service is especially important when something goes wrong, and the manager's response made an already disappointing meal much worse. By the way, I was told this is the owner son so if you go to management, don't expect for anything to be handled the waiters and waitress are nicer and have better customer service than management. read more

1 start for the restaurant but 5 stars for Madison our waitress. We got mixed males and all but 3 were tiny and 3 were mushy. I ordered crab imperial to go and all I got was a glorified dry crumbled crab cake. My friend ordered shrimp and fries and they were small. We decided to sit outside and it was soooo dead. I feel like it would've been a little better if there were music playing outside over the speaker that's outside. Also a boat came to dock while we were eating and the exhaust ended up nearly choking us, not to mention he hopped off the boat and opened the gate right behind me and just walked right in. This review is about the truly awesome people who work there . Last Sunday 8/3/25 my boyfriend and I stopped in for hot crabs and cold beers after a long day on the beach . Crabs were fantastic, our waitress, Linda was very nice ,and after dinner we decided to take a walk around the back and check out the boats and the water. While stealing a hug the lanyard holding my car keys somehow snapped off and like in s l o w motion we saw them drop into the dark, muddy water . JFC Fortunately two of the girls working there got Colin to come out and use a net to try to scoop them up . After several failed attempts to find them we figured they had sunk in the mud and most likely wouldn't work even if we found them . We thanked Colin , gave him a tip for his help, and proceeded to TRY to get an Uber back to Bowie . We must have waited for 10-15 minutes hoping we could find a ride but to no avail- now what ? Low and behold big, beautiful Colin comes walking out front dangling my keys !!!!! We didn't realize he'd been back at it all this time trying to help us !!! Next thing .... hit the button and the key fob worked !!!!! Unbelievable considering they were submerged in the muck . Colin went way out of his way to help us and we couldn't be more appreciative. We knew what we were in for when we walked into the place at lunch time on a Friday and there was just one big table of gray-hairs finishing up. But, we didn't know the area, so we decided to stay. We started with a crab pretzel - great idea in concept, terrible in execution. The obviously once-frozen pretzel was tough and chewy, with I guess what was supposed to be crab dip on top, but was really just a cold, gloopy mess. We sat outside and she harrassed an older couple sitting next to us so much so that I spoke up to her about it. It was near closing but we received service as if it was regular hours. The food was good. The young man was very polite and accommodating even though he was serving our table and the bar area. He didn't rush us to finish but kept checking to see if we needed anything. The place was spacious with only my friend and I seated at a table in the restaurant side while others were at the bar area. I guess the doors were open earlier in the day because it seemed to have some flies which was annoying. I would recommend this restaurant. I came to Abner's this evening thinking that I would enjoy some of the delicious crabs and was treated with disrespect and discrimination. I have been a customer for over a decade, driving an hour to and fro and I have never been treated like I was today. I typically come here when I want a low key bar vibe. They have some decent options on tap. I've even had decent fried oysters here. Also, their steamed shrimp are amazing. The manager was rude and very nasty. Her attitude was very very rude. I ordered crab legs and 1 cluster was missing legs. I ask about getting a redo and they refused. I asked to speak with the manager and she came over like she was prepared to fight. I showed her the cluster and she said "I WILL NO REDO THE CRAB...I CAN CUT IT IN HALF!" I said ok, cut it in have. Then the manager said "THEN GIVE ME THE CRAB." So I gave her the cluster, and she stormed away and threw the crab in the trash. We visited Abners twice while vacationing Chesapeake Beach. The place would remind you of a cafeteria, not much ambiance. So you go here for the seafood, which very fresh. The portions are pretty large, the sweetened ice tea is great! We got an Ultimate Pot, which was yummy! Half dozen crabs, soft shell crabs, stuffed flounder, and snow crab meal. Bonnie, our first waitress, was so sweet! And Isa (or Lisa), our 2nd waitress, was very nice. All kind, thorough, and good check up timing. However, I want to mention, both times we went we saw and heard a woman, who appeared to be the Manager. Which was confirmed by a staff member. While she BARKED at every single employee, In front of customers - She Never asked any patron, how was their meal. How is that? She was overly concerned with what each person was doing, she was loud, sounded harsh, and was in the middle of the restaurant!! Drinks, the drinks are always pleasant, and the bartenders can be heavyhanded (in the right way). They always keep you coming back. The remodeled the bar area into a "ship," I HATE it! I know I said I was going to be fair, however, the last time I sat at the bar I saw a roach. So please avoid that area if possible. Slots, the slots are the money maker for this place. There are good days and bad days (more bad than good). However, family members and I have won a generous amount of money over the years. My biggest concern here is they really need a better system for customers purchasing crabs. I went at noon and was advised crabs wouldn't be available until 3:30 pm ok great no problem. I returned at 3:00 pm and got in line (1st person) people begin getting in life after me. Next thing I know it was a long line of people waiting. One of the guys who work here came out disregarded me (1st person) and started passing out tickets to the customer faces he personally remembered from earlier. So this led to confusion and words be exchanged amongst myself and another customer in which we did reach a agreement Abner's need a better system to avoid this type of confusion. Personal experience was unsatisfactory. Ordered a stuffed flounder. Upon food arrival, I asked the waitress what the flounder was stuffed with because there was no crabmeat on the plate at all. She was not able to see any on the plate either so I asked if we could just change the charge from stuffed flounder to regular flounder since there was no crabmeat. She couldn't do that, and called the floor manager. The manager said the crabmeat was on there, but the waitress and I couldn't see it, and then I was told that I ate it. They insisted that I ate it so despite my decorum and politeness in asking for some resolution, the floor manager couldn't look me in my eyes to talk to me so instead she called security. The restaurant manager was then called and again I was told that I ate the crabmeat and then talking over my plate she took my fork and used my fork to pick at the fillet of flounder. She then hastily took my plate and removed it from the bill and told me I couldn't order anything else. This was a blessing. The potato salad was tasteless and the beans were over seasoned. My daughter enjoyed her crab legs, the waitress was great, but management was poor. Of course, I would not recommend this place, unless you enjoy a school cafeteria-like environment with soulless people. Their inability to solve a problem was grotesque. read more
