I popped in here one day just to check the place out as I was on my way to another shop in the complex. I was very impressed. Mostly by the beer. Great selection and it really hit the spot. I'm not a fancy guy with all the cheese silliness (like those fruity wine people). But, damn. The staff selected some great stuff for me. I regret that it was only a short visit and I will definitely go back to see what else they can whip up for me. One drawback is that the place is kind of small. But, I suppose there isn't much that can be done about that. read more

I had an awesome time at this place. I love the look and layout, although it is small, and had a flight of decent brews and a cheese board featuring some fantastic cheeses. We split 2 cheese boards and most of the cheeses were among the best I've ever had, not that I'm a cheese connoisseur or anything, but I was very pleased with their cheeses and since I've been following them on BeerMenus, I see they often get really good beers too. You'd expect to find this kind of place in Britain. It's a quaint 'Ye Olde Cheese Shop' like the one on Monty Python, except they actually have cheese here! Any grilled cheese combo you get here will be the best you've ever had - promise. And they have raw cheeses and cheeses that I only could ever find in Grand Central Market in Manhattan. This place is fun if you like cheese - and even if you don't - I have to admit I haven't had the brew side - but that looks just as enticing. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time and yesterday I finally got my husband to take me there. It was a beautiful fall day around 2:00 and people were ordering but it wasn't crazy busy . The two girls behind the counter were very nice but didn't seem able to keep up. When I placed my order I was told they were out of prosciutto. How does a place not have one of their main ingredients! It is on half of their sandwiches! After waiting a half an hour, which I didn't mind because I was looking so forward to these cheesy creations, we finally got our sandwiches. All the anticipation had dissipated and I was very disappointed.I got the Rachlette and they substituted the prosciutto with Copicolla. There was hardly any cheese and two little slices of spicy Copicolla. Four the price you would think it would be oozing with cheese and it definitely would have been better with the prosciutto on it. My husband got the Tony soprano and he thought it was just okay. His had more cheese, but only two slices of meat. He did enjoy his Porter though. Wasn't worth the 40-minute drive there and don't think I will be trying it again. read more

Go here now. They are a hidden gem of Stony Brook. I found it by accident. Meeting up with friends staying at the local Inn we met for tea. Then we walked around and found this awesome shoppe. They have all sorts of cheeses, crakers, beer, hard cider, wine etc. WOW! The lady and man at the counter were exceptionally welcoming. My wife and I liked Brew Cheese, but it was just missing something, and it may just be that we didn't maximize our experience there. The young hipster working the counter was very knowledgeable, very helpful and very very nice. The cheeses we sampled were very good, the only let down was the "baked brie" since it lacked the puff pastry and wasn't baked (apparently the baker hadn't arrived that day). The beer list was expansive (largely a bottled offering) and they offer flights should you like to sample what's on tap. Lastly, the space, which is tiny, and seats at most 16 at a short bar and 2 tall tables by the door, would feel cramped with more than 8 patrons inside. In sum, I like the concept and their selection of beer and cheese is as impressive as it is palatable, but it's just lacking some intangible for it to be a real hit in my opinion. read more

This is one of our favorite spots to go to. You really cannot go wrong with beer and cheese (our two favorite things). We usually get a seasonal selection of cheese. This has allowed us to try a wide variety of cheeses we would have never discovered on our own. The staff is knowledgeable and everything is delicious. The selection and expertise at Brew Cheese is superb. The Tuesday night cheese class (at 7pm) is always great- one beer and three to four cheeses for around $17. I really wanted to be excited about this place being a (near) dedicated retail spot for cheese and beer. I was disappointed, partially by the selection and partially by the fact that this place, like the local Whole Foods and Fairway cheese counters, is just a cut-and-wrap place (most of the cheeses, with the exception of a few, have been pre-cut into wedges, weighed, wrapped, and are ready to be sold). The best way to ensure the quality of cheese is to have it cut-to-order, and in a place where cheese is literally half the name, I'd expect "cut-to-order" to be the norm here. The selection itself is smaller than that of any of the other cheese retailers I've seen on Long Island. Bottle selection for beers is interesting, but $5/ 12 oz bottle is absurd. Honestly, I can't see myself ever coming to buy cheese here or stopping by for a drink. read more

I came here because they had a beer (Speedway Stout) that I rarely see on tap on Long Island and wanted to drink. The place is small, but extremely clean and pleasant to be in. The fridge is stocked with great beer. The bartender (I think his name was Jason) was a super friendly beer nerd, and we geeked out about beers we liked. That pleasant conversation alone will ensure that I come back. Also the beer was great, and the price I was charged was extremely reasonable. The place is way too small for what it's trying to be. I don't want to go into a cramped, quiet place to drink a beer that resonates more of a gift-shop vibe than a social environment. You could maybe fit two different parties in there at once, which just feels uncomfortable. The cheese is pre-cut, which doesn't ensure optimal freshness. The customer-service specialists are too pushy with samples and act as if they know what they're talking about, but cannot fool someone with actual knowledge of cheese. You definitely aren't getting bang for your $ here; there are far better cheese/wine/beer bars that one should visit.
