    The Smorgasboard
    David R.

This was a cool little place to pop into for a bite and a beer! They've got a lot of creative and tasty grilled cheese sandwiches with fun names to choose from. I ordered the The Smorgasboard and it did not disappoint. My wife got the Robert Baratheon Rides Again and that was super tasty too. Brew Cheese definitely does their sweet, spicy, and savory flavors right for the grilled cheeses. The bartender working that night was awesome, and she was helpful especially since it was our first time there. We'll definitely be back for more brews and more cheese.

Who doesn't love a good surprise? Apparently, a lot of people. But I'm always down to receive something I wasn't expecting. Well, for Brew Cheese I was totally expecting everything I experienced. It's the fact that my girlfriend surprised me by taking us over to the Stony Brook location (shoutout to her!) that threw me for a loop. You see, I've longed to visit Brew Cheese for quite some time (and she knew that!). I mean what doesn't sound amazing about beer and grilled cheese under one roof? (The answer is nothing). Though I always thought I'd check out the Northport location (it being so close to Sand City Brewery and all), but there is no doubt in my mind that that storefront is just as wondrous as the Stony Brook spot. It's not big, with only a couple of high top and barrel-type tables (plus a few bar seats), but that's all it needs to have plenty of sud/curd style. What really makes Brew Cheese so stunning are the two aforementioned parts to its name. Let's start with my favorite, the "Brew." Eight beers on tap with a nice array of local and semi-local craft breweries (Sand City made an appearance) as well as a cider and some mead. Not sure what to have? Flights are available (and of course I went in this direction). But what makes Brew Cheese so awesome is the fridge full of beers, ciders, and a few other libations. See something you like? Just take it out, get a glass from the chill employee, and drink it there (a similar idea to Milk and Hops in the city)! My girlfriend loved this concept as she found a cider in the fridge right up her alley. Now let's get cheesy. Not only does Brew Cheese have over 15 different gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, but they also have actual cheese (well duh!). This meaning their display case filled with all the cheeses they use in their grilled greatnesses (and perhaps a few others) are available for purchase in wedge form. We didn't buy any cheese-to-go that day, but we totally dined on the Smorgasbord grilled cheese. This $10 handheld consisted of buffalo wing cheddar, smoked gouda, French raclette, sriracha, and spicy pickles. I told you this is not your average grilled cheese shop! Even better is the fresh scrape of raclette that accompanies several of those delectable options (not the one I got, unfortunately). That's something I look forward to trying next time out. Overall, Brew Cheese just rocks. Perhaps if you're only a casual acquaintance with beer or cheese then it's not the place for you, but if you're a connoisseur (or just a fan) of either area, then you gotta give em a whirl. With great brews on tap (and more in the fridge) along with a variety of delectable dairy products, you're bound to have a memorable experience at Brew Cheese. And hey, maybe someone will read this review and bring you here as a surprise. One can only hope...

Great small space for exactly what it says cheese and brews! I thought it would've been bigger but that's me. Husband and I shared a cheese board and sandwich. The double bacon grilled cheese and the raclette board. Both really good!! I only wish the sandwich had actual bacon in it not JUST the bacon jam. It made it too sweet for a sandwich. But the board was so good and the bread they use is excellent!!!! I would recommend, but not for a group. I'm not sure if the northport one is bigger but in stonybrook it was cozy enough for 10 customers at a time MAX!

First time here and definitely won't be my last. The service is phenomenal. So friendly and knowledgeable about everything they have. The food is delicious and prepared with care. VERY generous portions- we needed to-go boxes. The quality of the cheeses were great. So fresh. The beer was excellent too. I highly recommend giving this place a try. I'll definitely be back.

I've been wanting to try this place for years and it did not disappoint. The service was wonderful and the grilled cheese paired wonderfully with a nice cold beer. the only oddity was that my server growled at me and crawled away on all fours when I was given my food. Altogether a wonderful experience

A wonderful cheese shop and place to grab a bite. We got a cheese plate and grilled cheese. It hit the spot. Server was welcoming and I could tell l she know was her cheese. Try it out if you like cheese

Brew Cheese is awesome! I love all of the food I've tried and their cheese boards are SO good. The beer on tap is always different and there's always something to enjoy. It's pretty small and cozy but it works. I'd recommend any of their sandwiches, they have all been fresh and delicious. Really decent selection of unique cheeses too. I come here about once a month I love it!

I went to the Stony Brook location on a random Wednesday night a few weeks ago and I plan to go back ASAP. It was the perfect way to warm up and eat some comfort food in the middle of the week. If you are a cheese snob, you'll enjoy the selection of cheeses and paired platters available, as well as the menu of grilled cheeses. It was extremely hard to pick just one because they each highlight a different cheese family - I almost got a second one to go! The beers on tap were all seasonal and paired well with the food. You can sample the beers, and based on what I like, the bartender was able to recommend a really great sour beer that I would 100% order again. The decor is super cool, especially the beer cap sign on the wall, and the cozy, casual atmosphere fits the food. I think it can only be described as warm and cheesy - in a good way.

Stopped in for a late lunch what a great concept Beer and Grilled Cheese ! Small place with a cool vibe. great Selection of obscure beer and very creative grilled cheese menu the "Tony soprano breathing heavily" was not only delicious but has to be the best named sandwich on any menu.

    Small place, but comfortable enough.

I opened them up the next day to grill and they are grayish brown, old looking and smelling patties. You know when you buy ground beef patties from the supermarket and leave them in the fridge for a couple days too long and they get brownish grey? That's how Merceps patties were, only worse, and they weren't even in the fridge for a day. Certainly didn't expect that from supposedly "fresh" patties that I spent nearly 3x as much as I would've on grocery store burgers. Brought the patties in the next Monday to return. The owner gave me an attitude right off the bat and argued with me that there was nothing wrong with the brown, gray overpriced patties they sold me. I said, "I don't know what to tell you. I guess we disagree. I'd just like to return them." He continued to argue, gave me an attitude and finally only gave me half of my money back. Fast forward to this year, 2025. Family members had a party and got nearly $75 worth of chicken from Merceps to barbecue. (Keep in mind this would've been maybe $30, at most, worth of chicken at any supermarket.) The $75 worth of Merceps chicken was only in the fridge for a day. When it came time to prepare and unpack the chicken we were met with a horrible surprise. Rancid chicken. Not just past its prime... but literally rancid chicken. Chicken that smelled like rotten fish. Family member called up Merceps and they agreed to give them a store credit and said not even to bring the rancid chicken back to return. Now fast forward to the most recent disappointment . For another BBQ, about a month later, family decide to get from Merceps once again, using the store credit from the rancid chicken. For part of the newest order, we got another dozen beef patties. What do you know? Same thing that happened last year. More brown, gray, sour smelling, un fresh patties. 3 strikes you are out. Stay far, far away from this overpriced butcher with their rancid, stinking meats and rude attitudes. BJs, Costco, Stop and Shop all literally have better quality meat than Merceps.. for half the price. Like what is the point of paying this egregious markup for a local butcher if the quality is so horrendous? Honestly?

I walked into the store and asked if they sell Oxtails, some guy that worked there said yes and pointed to the refrigerator. Well I didn't want precut oxtail I wanted the butcher to cut the tail for me the way I wanted it cut. The man behind the counter stated he Only sell it precut for $8.99 a pound. I said fine give me 2 lbs. after I paid the man I realized it was frozen. I didn't want frozen precut oxtail. So I asked for a refund. The man behind the counter said do you know that the tail is frozen when it arrives at the butcher. I said sir I honestly just want the oxtail to not be frozen because I wanted to cook it for dinner right away. Then all of a suddenly he says. We do sell the tail but that cost $10.99 a pound. Then he says "Do you know the price of oxtail went up because it's high in demand" That's when I started to think maybe this is a race issue, no one asked for the price of oxtail. I asked if you sold them by the tail. So I said I don't care about the price I just want Oxtail by the tail because I like to get my tail cut up no more then an 1inch in width. How dare you judge me by not telling me what you sell, but yet giving me the cheapest you have. I was very offended. Then he goes to say well if that's what you want you need to call me Monday and I will have it for you Tuesday. I believe that should have been said as soon as I asked if you sell oxtail by the tail and not precut. Why did it take you so long to mention that you sell the tail for 10.99 a pound. That should have been said in the same sentence as precut frozen oxtail is $8.99 per pound. I felt I was not welcome here and that's fine because I will not return. When you walk in, the servers are right there, but they look at you and don't say anything. It's awkward from the start. I'm not sure if it's a language barrier or just the way things are run, but it makes the whole experience confusing. They have iPads for ordering, but there are no signs or directions anywhere telling you that's what you're supposed to do. So when someone finally acknowledged me, I started to order at the counter, and the guy told me to order on the iPad instead. I tried, but I couldn't make the modifications I wanted, and when I attempted to explain that, communication became really difficult. He eventually had to call someone else over to help. Trust me, I have a lot of patience for language barriers, but when there's attitude involved, the sympathy goes out the window. It just makes everything more frustrating than it needs to be. Now, the food itself? Actually very good. I was excited to try the Impossible chopped cheese because I've heard great things from other locations, and it did not disappoint. It was really delicious, just a little pricey, especially when you compare it to a regular chopped cheese from a bodega for half the cost. My husband got the chicken tenders, and he said they were also very good. So here's the bottom line: the food is solid, but the service is extremely off-putting. We even tried giving them a second chance, and the experience was basically the same. I'd consider ordering online, but the prices on their website are literally double, and when my husband pointed it out, they argued with him. All in all, the food alone is good enough that I want to like this place, but I'm not sure I'd go back. Try at your own risk, LOL.
