This place is super cool. Makes me wish I was a student at Stony Brook U. so I could be so close by. The guy working the counter seemed to be the only employee here at 1pm on a Saturday, and it was sufficient. Cute little store with two nice sized tables right by the entrance and windows. A few small tables asking the side and more seating at a small bar. Tons of beer, tons of cheese, and Boylan brand sodas of various flavors. We started with a cheese board for $18 that had a few decent cheeses... I think it was called The West-Coast. They had basically run out of the Barely Buzzed cheese, so I told the kid to choose a replacement for it. He gave me the small piece of Barely Buzzed that was left over and a nice junk of Merlot BellaVitano, which happened to be our favorite. And the fig jam and wafers that came with it were the ultimate compliment to the cheese. It was a lot of cheese, even for the 3 of us, and we didn't finish it because our sandwiches were so massive. I got a sandwich called The Raclette, named after a cheese I never tried before. It was pretty good, but I wasn't crazy about that particular cheese. Now I know! My daughter got a The Fold, which was my favorite of the three, complete with slices of jalapeño. The wife got the Green Mountain which had bacon and Maple syrup, which I thought was ok. As it turns out, I'm not a fan of beer, sadly. But if you like beer, and you like cheese, and you've got a couple of hours to kill with some great company, I think this place is going to make you really, really happy. read more

While shops may be hard to find when driving within the Stony Brook Village Complex, Brew Cheese's neighbor -- the Stony Brook Post Office -- provides a landmark point of reference through its towering clock spire. EXPERIENCE: We had planned on going to the Northport Village location, but an impromptu change in the day's plans landed us on the campus of SUNY/Stony Brook. In looking for an alternate dining destination via Yelp, I was surprised and glad to learn there was a second Brew Cheese location in Stony Brook Village Center. The small, narrow interior is painted chocolate brown, with many aged wood decorative touches. Sunlight streams in through windows that nearly reach the ceiling. German clay beer steins and metal cheese graters, evocative of the focii, line the perimeter. Four barrel tables -- two for couples, two for groups -- complement the bar counter that is lined with four stools. Music gently plays in the background. The end result is a cozy, intimate space for those who choose to immediately enjoy what Brew Cheese has curated and prepared. Early reviews, such as the one submitted by Long Island YES member, Bill, suggest that cheese alone was initially offered as an accompaniment to craft beer. However, today there is a two-sided menu in which customers can select melted cheese sandwiches -- a great "to go" option -- as well as platters. Each item has a clever name and combination of flavors. For example, I experienced the Apple Jam-Bo-Rie, with melted French Brie, slices of crisp green apples, and bacon jam encased in two thick slices of grill-pressed multigrain bread. I live near the Northport location, and decided to get a change of scenery so off I went to Stony Brook, their original location. It's a little smaller, same cool vibe with lots of vintage beer signs etc. The young lady who helped me was very nice. I tried a Ghost white, wheat ale. It was crisp and refreshing. Someone ordered a grilled cheese, which is their specialty, oh the smell of the bread & melting cheese, heavenly! You can get beer on tap, cider and they have wine too. Who doesn't love a good surprise? Apparently, a lot of people. But I'm always down to receive something I wasn't expecting. Well, for Brew Cheese I was totally expecting everything I experienced. It's the fact that my girlfriend surprised me by taking us over to the Stony Brook location (shoutout to her!) that threw me for a loop. You see, I've longed to visit Brew Cheese for quite some time (and she knew that!). I mean what doesn't sound amazing about beer and grilled cheese under one roof? (The answer is nothing). Though I always thought I'd check out the Northport location (it being so close to Sand City Brewery and all), but there is no doubt in my mind that that storefront is just as wondrous as the Stony Brook spot. It's not big, with only a couple of high top and barrel-type tables (plus a few bar seats), but that's all it needs to have plenty of sud/curd style. What really makes Brew Cheese so stunning are the two aforementioned parts to its name. Let's start with my favorite, the "Brew." Eight beers on tap with a nice array of local and semi-local craft breweries (Sand City made an appearance) as well as a cider and some mead. Not sure what to have? Flights are available (and of course I went in this direction). But what makes Brew Cheese so awesome is the fridge full of beers, ciders, and a few other libations. See something you like? Just take it out, get a glass from the chill employee, and drink it there (a similar idea to Milk and Hops in the city)! My girlfriend loved this concept as she found a cider in the fridge right up her alley. Now let's get cheesy. Not only does Brew Cheese have over 15 different gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, but they also have actual cheese (well duh!). This meaning their display case filled with all the cheeses they use in their grilled greatnesses (and perhaps a few others) are available for purchase in wedge form. We didn't buy any cheese-to-go that day, but we totally dined on the Smorgasbord grilled cheese. This $10 handheld consisted of buffalo wing cheddar, smoked gouda, French raclette, sriracha, and spicy pickles. I told you this is not your average grilled cheese shop! Even better is the fresh scrape of raclette that accompanies several of those delectable options (not the one I got, unfortunately). That's something I look forward to trying next time out. Overall, Brew Cheese just rocks. Perhaps if you're only a casual acquaintance with beer or cheese then it's not the place for you, but if you're a connoisseur (or just a fan) of either area, then you gotta give em a whirl. With great brews on tap (and more in the fridge) along with a variety of delectable dairy products, you're bound to have a memorable experience at Brew Cheese. I just recently moved into this area and am on the look out for food! I came here on a Sunday afternoon and there was only two other guy buddies have a drink with their [service?] dog. My fiancé and I don't drink but man the sandwiches are wickedly good. We got a Jamie and one other sandwich that I can't remember but I can eat the Jamie sandwich for legit every meal. That bacon flavor is super addicting. It's right by the water so you're able to take your sandwiches and eat on a bench and look out into the water. Today I finally went to brew cheese. Brew cheese has been on my list for sooo long! I had a great experience. I wish I could remember the cheese monger's name who helped me. She was so helpful and pleasant. She let me sample some cheeses and suggested one I wouldn't have thought to try on my own. Dare I say THEE best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had in my entire life? I know cheese is in their name so it should be good, but this was not only good, it was other worldly. I went to the Stony Brook location on a random Wednesday night a few weeks ago and I plan to go back ASAP. It was the perfect way to warm up and eat some comfort food in the middle of the week. If you are a cheese snob, you'll enjoy the selection of cheeses and paired platters available, as well as the menu of grilled cheeses. It was extremely hard to pick just one because they each highlight a different cheese family - I almost got a second one to go! The beers on tap were all seasonal and paired well with the food. You can sample the beers, and based on what I like, the bartender was able to recommend a really great sour beer that I would 100% order again. Not very romantical.. -There are no wines, there is BYOW which is kinda cool. Somehow we had a glass of wine and was charged $10 bucks. Kinda high -There are no appetizers or sandwiches. No food! Its Friday nite and I can deal with wine & cheese, there needs to be more apps. Hummus, a pannine cheese sammy, something! -There is no excitement here! No music, no radio. no nothing. Kinda like the library. Now, if I may. Lets make a comparison to a great cheese place in Port Jefferson. When I walk into C'est Cheese, there is someone playing guitar. We're asked if we want to try some cheese. I look at the wine board, the sandwich board and more importantly the beer choices. It's interactive! When we stopped in during the fall, they had a couple pumpkin ales, a cider, and a few other options. They had good selection of bottled and canned beers to. Again, all craft with lots of local option too. I don't know as much about cheese, but they had a vast selection with very unique flavor profiles. I saw cheeses infused with caramelized onions and lavender. We ordered one of the grilled cheese sandwiches which was delicious! I definitely recommend with grilled cheese route. Decided to come here specifically as it was really close to the B&B we were staying in last month during me and the bf's trip to the north shore, and we didn't even have to drive there. Once we got there, we noticed that it was a fairly small space for a bar (well, cheese shop that also happened to be a bar), so we had to stand by a bar towards the back. Luckily, we didn't have to wait too long after placing our order before we managed to snag a table. As for what we had ordered: we decided to get their Simply Sheep cheese board, which came with manchego, lambchopper, and Roquefort cheeses. We both got some local beers to help wash down the cheeses as well. Our cheese board was tasty and the flavors complemented one another. Looks like most everything in this shop is pretty local, so you'd feel good about supporting a local business and other local dairy farms and breweries and what not while dining here. They also had a few imported goodies also, so it just seems well curated overall. A good place to come by if you want to nibble on something while having a local craft beer. read more

I've reviewed the Northport spot. I've been coming to the Stony Brook spot since it first opened. A fun, casual environment with a great cheese selection and sandwich options. I still just prefer a regular old cheese board, though. Their events, while rare, are really great, too. As Brew Cheese has grown, they've become more and more accommodating to their audience, which has been very cool to watch. I enjoy coming here whenever I'm in the area. Staff are super knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful.
