This afternoon was the first time I've been there after passing it so many times. The hubby and I decided to stop in for lunch since we were on that side of town and the weather was nice out. It was semi-busy when we went and we were kind of bummed we couldn't enjoy our lunch outside since all the patio tables were filled out. I ordered half a sandwich and salad, he the tuna wrap. The sandwich I got was the chilled herb chicken and the blue salad, which contained walnuts, dried cranberries, bleu cheese and a side of vinagrette. The food was fantastic. I especially enjoyed the herb chicken sandwich and the salad was great. I did appreciate that the dressing for the salad was served to the side so that I can control how much dressing I wanted for my salad (I am the one who only likes a splash, I will not douse my salad, otherwise I would order soup... sorry, bad joke lol). The counter girl was nice and the guy who brought our food to us was really friendly. They kind of figured we were newbies since I asked when ordering my dish what kinds of sandwiches I can choose from for the half sandwich part. But they were great and even told us which dishes were popular with customers, which helped a lot. The only thing was that they are a bit pricey. But it probably won't stop me from trying other menu items. I'll be back every now and then whenever I am in downtown Middletown. read more

Decent bagel, big cup of coffee, nice funky set up. Bagels are a bit on the small side. The tomato basil was okay. I have had better. They did accommodate my boyfriend when he realized it was the wrong kind of cheese on his bagel. Nothing special though. Cute funky atmosphere but I was watching the people behind the counter (one who I believe might be the owner or manager) and you can hear her complaining about something. It was annoying. Wasn't too impressed with this place. The staff was friendly and helpful, the inside was clean and had a decent amount of seating. But the food and coffee were just so-so and not really that tasty and not worth the price. For two of us, each getting a drink and something to eat for lunch along with tip was in the $35 range. I wish I could have enjoyed the food and coffee more as I could see it being a nice place to go for a change - but it just didn't do it for us. I used to like this place but the service has changed. 1. They can never get an order right. 2. Our office used to order from here regularly and they used to customize orders for us with no problem, one day I asked for just smoked salmon separate but understood I would paying for the entire sandwich...not a problem...or so I thought...the owner proceeded to turn us away because she is "not a stop n shop" and we could get smoked salmon anywhere. If I'm paying for the sandwich but don't want the bread or cheese what is the problem?? 3. They are overpriced to begin with...a sandwich and a latte just cost me almost 20 bucks...for a sandwich that wasn't even that good on top of the fact that I ordered it as a wrap and not a panini...but I was given a panini... I decided to try out brew bakers this weekend, and my experience was decent. It is clearly the spot to be for Wesleyan students looking for a nice setting to do school work and hang out with friends. The place was filled with students. I chose the roast beef sandwich which was basically a small grinder. It was very good and I enjoyed the horseradish sauce and roasted red peppers that were served on it. My boyfriend had a grilled cheese with bacon and tomatoes that he enjoyed also. I did order the white bean soup which was nothing to rave about. I think I had a few bites before deciding I didn't love it. It looked like a lot of people around were ordering bagels and breakfast options, so I think I would go for that if I returned. The set-up was a bit confusing. You order the same way you would at a panera, then they bring the food out to you. We weren't sure if we were supposed to clean up our own dish at the end so we ended up leaving it on the table. read more

I just bought a cranberry muffin to go. Get to work and its blueberry. Its dense, tiny and terrible. Its in the trash now. This is not my first time here and I have never been satisfied. The staff is very nice but the food quality is horrible. I am done with this place. read more

WOW - this place is EXPENSIVE. Nearly $20 for 2 breakfast sandwiches, no coffee, nothing else. This seems crazy. There is definitely potential to get full breakfasts at a sit down establishment in Middletown for less. Not worth the price. You also might be able to get your sit down breakfast faster somewhere else as well, because our food took forever to come out. Not great, considering this seems like its supposed to be a "fast" casual experience. I want to like you Brew bakers. So badly. I want to love you. I need breakfast damnit. But you are so... disappointing. You are too expensive for such highly inconsistent quality of food. I feel like I spend $16 for a food lottery ticket, and sometimes, but only sometimes, do I "win." And what I win is a pretty good what-should-be $6 sandwich. Most of the time I leave with a mix of disappointment, rage, and existentialist anxiety that I just spent my time moving ever closer to death, consuming some sad, depressing conglomeration of edible ingredients, whilst I watch my youth slowly slip away like some abandoned boat on a gentle river into the darkness. All in all, I think it's a good spot for breakfast sandwiches or lunch, but definitely overpriced. I like eating here. The crowd is pretty straight laced. Mostly College kids from Weslyan and young professionals. Not like those weirdies on Court Street. Seating is good for people with kids, but I don't think they have a kids menu... I have ordered scrambled eggs for my son though, and he seemed to like them. They usually play pretty good music, which is nice if you're coming to a restaurant to listen to music. The staff seems to be kinda pushy. More than once, I've ordered food to eat in the restaurant, but I get it wrapped in foil and in a paper bag. I can't stand that. Nothing like asking for a mug and getting your coffee in a to-go cup. They also sometimes bus your table while you're still there. One of the best breakfast joints in CT. I had the Brew Boilermaker breakfast wrap. It consisted of Guinness marinated steak, roasted potatoes, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, and horseradish sause. It was probably one of the best breakfast sandwiches that I have ever had. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming with optional outdoor seating. Brew Bakers cures their own meats and even makes their own sausages and bratwursts. They also make their own pastries. Awful. When I walked in there were 5 people in line and one person at the counter. It's 7:45am mind you.... 12 minutes. That's how long it took me to get to order. The girl making coffee's was still 4 orders behind yet made time to chat with a woman in line. Another 9 minutes go by and finally she asks me what I'm waiting for to which I said, a coffee.... Been there frequently since 2012 when I moved to the area from Chicago. Food is fantastic. You have to get the specials! They're unique and creative and you might hesitate when you read what they are, but just trust me and give it a shot. Have yet to be disappointed. Pistachio muffins are a personal favorite as well. Well worth the price. Atmosphere is collegiate/hipster-ish, which is oh-so-scary to many other reviewers from this area. I personally think it's great. I always see the lady who's probably the owner (?) and she seems really nice and dedicated to the place. I really don't understand the negative reviews of this place. After being in Connecticut for two weeks for our first time I have to say this is the friendliest place I've been to. The food was great. We went twice and had the brew breakfast, French toast, the corn beef hash wrap, and the veggie bomb wrap. Everything was great and the price is very reasonable for Connecticut prices. The ladies working there especially Naomi are just the sweetest and it wasn't just with us but everyone that walked in there! Super kid friendly and just a joy to have breakfast. None of that cold attitude here! A warm and friendly atmosphere and yummy quick breakfast! The wait wasn't too long at all considering how much we ordered and it was fresh! $6.91 for a yogurt parfait??! I would give them 1 star, but when I do come here the food is always good. The customer service is the worst in Middletown, so I VERY RARELY do come. Only eatten here once and echo other comments partially about prices. Veggie egg stuffed wrap for breakfast was very good- 6bucks but it was packed with good vegetables and mozzarella, so I thought it was decent value. Other things on menu (egg and cheese on hard roll for almost 5 bucks, with bacon 6bucks!) seem pretty overpriced. I had a double espresso-- it was very good but about $3.50. Way overpriced-- at Starbucks it's usually $2.00, which already seems too much for just a simple shot of espresso. It did come in an actual little ceramic euro style cafe cup which was nice (no silly plastic lid like they do everywhere else). Atmosphere here is nice, some leather couches and I like the counter seating. They also sell the obligatory coffee-house-yoga-relaxation music CDs at the counter. read more

I took my two kids to brew bakers and the admirable smell permeated though my nose. The service was great and was the cashier were vivacious. My kids ordered the cinnamon raisin and a egg and cheese, so did I. I was very good. My older son liked it the most. read more

Eggs that are brown are gross, let alone eggs that are baked on a pan so they're in thin layers and are brown on both sides and then folded all over the breakfast sandwich. This place was once a refreshing change from the norm however, it was a chore to order, eat, or sit in peace. Wont go back! 1) Our number was just left at the register. 2) The owner's wife ( i think) was raising her voice to a customer regarding an order. She was losing her cool! A friendly locally owned cafe/bistro with really bad coffee. In fact, the coffee was so bad, I ended up tossing it after a couple of sips. The problem was I paid something like $1.75 for what was essentially 4oz of coffee [small] and it didn't quite cut it. Shame. I despise Dunkin Donuts coffee, but I'd rather pay the same price for a big cup and dislike theirs and not feel ripped off at the same time. Really. I am a frequent customer at brew bakers cafe. Working from home, I often stop by in the mornings for breakfast and coffee to jump start my day. I really wish I could have given this place more stars because I love it so dearly. Here's why: Every morning when I arrive at brew bakers I am quickly greeted by an overly friendly, hard working, awesome staff. The staff alone is why I go there. The food is decent yet outrageously overpriced. The coffee is STRONG which I love. The STAFF is why I go and why I feel many people frequent the place so often. HOWEVER, as I am doing work in there I notice who I assume is the owner (Eloise) treating her staff like absolute crap. Often looks like she is on the brink of a panic attack. She yells at them and disciplines them often in front of customers for doing hardly anything wrong. For example, one morning she was on brink of meltdown since one employee had two different water bottles on the counter at once. It makes the business look awful and the customers feel uncomfortable. I cringe when I see her walk to the front. THE WORST thing I have seen her do is threaten to take the employees tips away for what I think was changing the thermostat in the restaurant. RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CUSTOMERS THAT JUST GAVE THEIR MONEY TO THE EMPLOYEES!!! If I were to go back in time i would have said something and demanded my money back. Eloise, when I tip the awesome employees you pay MINIMUM WAGE the money needs to go to THEM. Brew Bakers doesn't have the best coffee but they do have a pretty good bagel selection. I usually go there when I'm in the mood for an all natural smoothie. They have a great selection and make them well. For lunch they have various cafe offerings. I'm a big fan of their take on the chicken caesar salad. Service is a little on the slow side. read more
