Five & Hoek Coffee - Takeaway coffee shop latte

Walking in through the…read morefront, you're immediately greeted by a seating area where people are working, relaxing, or enjoying their coffee. Heading further in, you'll find the ordering counter, and you can even catch a glimpse of coffee beans being roasted, which adds a nice touch to the atmosphere. They offer both a seasonal menu and a straightforward regular menu, making it easy to find something you like. Overall, the environment felt calm and laid-back. The staff were more on the quiet side personally, I'm used to more outgoing baristas, but that's just a matter of preference.

My friends and I were looking for a spot for post-lunch coffee and found Five and Hoek. It is a…read morereally cute, modern cafe in Wheaton. The building looks like it was converted from a church, and the back seating area has some high stained glass windows. In the middle of the cafe is a narrow hallway/corridor where the supply closet and the single stall bathroom is, so it segments the cafe into two areas, connected by this hallway in the center. The design feels very clearly like a remnant of an old historic building, and a brick alleyway runs along one side. In the space/room where you order (walking through the seating area and through the hallway), it opens up with huge windows and a huge industrial coffee grinder on full display. There's another counter to order, with a few pastry options, and along another side wall, a rack of F&H clothes for purchase and the drink menus. (The aesthetic reminded me of Blue Bottle.) I ordered an iced Whiskey Vanilla Latte with oak milk and it was good! I couldn't taste any whiskey at all, and when I ordered the barista had mentioned this (cooked off so you wouldn't taste it) so it was a decent vanilla latte. I'll give them props for a really cool unique flavor. We all grabbed our drinks and headed (back through the hallway) into the other room with the seating area. There is a small section with a couch, otherwise lots of tables and chairs and I was glad it wasn't too crowded so we were able to grab a table. This was a great spot to grab coffee and meet up with friends. It's in a neat little downtown area in Wheaton, and they offer creative coffee drinks, with beans and merch to purchase.

They have a decently sized seating area, and in the warmer months, there's a patio to sit outside. It can get a bit loud inside during the weekends and peak hours, so not ideal if you prefer quieter environments to do work. I absolutely love their brownies, especially their blackberry brownie, but they were out the day I went so I got the red velvet cupcake instead and it was perfectly moist and soft. You truly can't go wrong with any of their bakery items. I also got the pesto pasta salad, which I highly recommend.

I had the pick two, which was a half a sandwich (grilled cheese) with a half salad (kale Caesar). The salad was so good! Fresh, crisp and lightly dressed. However, the grilled cheese was pretty sad. I opened it up and there was hardly any cheese. It was just like eating two pieces of grilled bread. They need to improve on that for sure. I also had their 12oz wildflower latte which was very tasty, but served lukewarm and not hot. If the milk is not steamed, it will bring down the temperature of the coffee. I like my specialty coffees served hot. I do have to say every staff member we came in contact with was friendly. They seemed happy and were there to help and answer questions. You place your order at the counter, and you receive a number which you display at your table. There are two dining areas with tables and a few booths to dine at next to where you place your order. Members of the staff bring your order to the table. We didn't have to wait long for our drinks and food. Even with the sad grilled cheese sandwich which was disappointing and the lukewarm latte, I would definitely go back to Blackberry Market again to try other items on their menu. I'll pass on the grilled cheese, though.

I'm not a salad person, either. But this one...Unreal. Been there for breakfast too. Had the French toast and the lavender coffee latte. DO NOT SKIP the candied (Billionaire, I believe?) Bacon!

We didn't plan on eating here and they were nice to allow us time to browse their menu. We had Fairy Tale Expresso Martini. Very strong Expresso and is made with almond milk. So delicious and definitely kept me up for the night. We shared the Baked cheese topped with pomegranate seeds, pumpkin seeds, and something else I can't recall. The cheese held together pretty well and was like a spread to place on the crostini. Wasn't messy to eat and all the flavors went well together and were amazing. Earthy and a hint of spice that isn't over whelming. Don't realize the spice after a few more bites. Then we shared the Red wine braised short ribs. They split the entree for us and it was plenty of food. The polenta was delicious with the sauce. The braised short ribs fell apart easily. The arugula, onions, and shaved fennel made the dish very pretty. Definitely recommended trying this dish. The roads were a bit confusing with the one way lanes only but plenty of parking spots on the streets.

But over the past few months I've been there three times, and every time they are sold out of so many breads and pastries... Today I visited around 1 pm hoping to buy a baguette for dinner, and they were sold out. Since they're open until 9 pm, I asked if they were baking any more of them--but I was told once they're sold out, that's it for the day. So... The baguette shop was going to stay open for 8 more hours with no baguettes? Ce n'est pas bon... The pastries we bought today to enjoy onsite were very good--a strawberry mochi donut and a raspberry cream bite. The cream inside the raspberry treat was sublime. I ordered an iced mocha and couldn't finish the second half because it was too dense and sweet. My daughter was happier with her iced matcha. Folks have noted before that this place feels pricey, and that rings true. It feels almost punitively expensive here. All in all this is a pretty little place, but the supply chain clearly can't keep up and the prices are pretty high. It's probably best for early risers and folks looking for a splurge.

We had the coffee croissant donut, valentines day mochi donut, fruit tart and football creme donut (because Super Bowl!) Service was good, the worker wasn't overly communicative, but did what they had to do and got our coffee orders right. It was pretty crowded for Friday morning, so tables were a little limited, but we managed to find a spot and there were plenty of pastries!
