My friends and I were looking for a spot for post-lunch coffee and found Five and Hoek. It is a really cute, modern cafe in Wheaton. The building looks like it was converted from a church, and the back seating area has some high stained glass windows. In the middle of the cafe is a narrow hallway/corridor where the supply closet and the single stall bathroom is, so it segments the cafe into two areas, connected by this hallway in the center. The design feels very clearly like a remnant of an old historic building, and a brick alleyway runs along one side. In the space/room where you order (walking through the seating area and through the hallway), it opens up with huge windows and a huge industrial coffee grinder on full display. There's another counter to order, with a few pastry options, and along another side wall, a rack of F&H clothes for purchase and the drink menus. (The aesthetic reminded me of Blue Bottle.) I ordered an iced Whiskey Vanilla Latte with oak milk and it was good! I couldn't taste any whiskey at all, and when I ordered the barista had mentioned this (cooked off so you wouldn't taste it) so it was a decent vanilla latte. I'll give them props for a really cool unique flavor. We all grabbed our drinks and headed (back through the hallway) into the other room with the seating area. There is a small section with a couch, otherwise lots of tables and chairs and I was glad it wasn't too crowded so we were able to grab a table. Such a cold day! It was perfect for a hot coffee. As we walked back to our car, we stopped at Five & Hoek. It's larger than it looks. Inside, there's a long hallway of seating. This place had been on my list of places to try for awhile, so decided to stop in and give them a try. At the time of my visits, they offered two kind of roasts for their drip coffee. I went with their El Salvador blend. I found it to be burnt tasting. My husband had the Ethiopian blend. His tasted better to me, but also had a burnt taste. The upstairs seating area was packed and unfortunately guests were spread out so we didn't get a chance to sit down. It was an only ok experience for me. I had gone to Dayglow the day before, and they have a similar orangey drink that really set the bar high, and it didn't really measure up to that standard. But it wasn't bad. The line was out the door with many other mobile orders also waiting for item pick up. I waited about 20 minutes to order my coffee and another 5-7 to have my items be ready. Why the 3 stars? Staff was hustling to make drinks around; but in turn, the girl helping people order switched to making drinks as I walked up. It becomes self-serve ordering when things get too busy. As a first timer, I had no idea where to find the right drinks on the ipad nor was able to get recommendations. On top of that, the chai was a bit too sweet for my preference and Whiskey Vanilla iced coffee wasn't anything I'd rave about. I waited in that coffee shop for an hour and never got my coffee, it was a simple order and I watched everyone around me slowly file out that came BEFORE me. it's absurd and it's probably not the employees but they're sorting machine for orders is awful. It is a cute place in a quirky location, but I imagine when construction is done it will have great flow. The line literally was out the door. I wanted to have a coffee that was memorable when I ordered the salted caramel coffee. Instead it was warm milk. My son got a chocolate shake and he enjoyed it even though a had a strawberry taste. The menu includes classic coffee options and some specific tea variety. They also had a seasonal menu and they all seemed very warm and interesting, some of which were alcoholic! Gotta say that I love great coffee and lattes. I like a good coffee that strikes a balance between its tasting notes and bitterness. For lattes, I like if the pure espresso flavor to compliment the flavors instead of being erased by them. This establishment so far has met those expectations. My go-to has been the whiskey vanilla latte, but everything else I have tried has been fantastic. My first trip here was actually part of my overall birthday as well, and it started my day off right. Service has been great here as well. The staff were friendly and helpful when asking for recommendations. Each time I have been, it was busy, so I did wait for a bit, but nothing excessive. Away in an alley is this small place to get smoothies and coffee. Five & Hoek has some good tasting and good for you drinks. It unfortunately also has very high prices. Certainly it can be good but not that much. This also amazingly for a coffee shop is missing seating. Having tried some of the coffee before I can say it's average. It's higher than average in one area and that's in price. This just isn't worth all that. Last time I got a smoothie. This was the Immune Boost, one that's supposed to make you feel better supposedly. It's $8.25 for a regular. This is made with carrots, coconut water, ginger, hemp seeds, kiwi, lemon juice, orange, parsley, tahini, and turmeric. Certainly there's a lot in it. Maybe too much. It explains the high prices when all that's going in. Try keeping these a little simpler and it may be much cheaper for these. Even though it's a coffee shop it doesn't feel like one all that much. If you're complaining that people sit around in coffee shops too much you'll love this. There's no seating inside whatsoever. read more
