Popped in this coffee spot, Chairlift attached to Brenner Pass restaurant one afternoon for some tea and pastries. It was an airy open space with plain tables and chairs. I know the menu says that the cheese fondue serves four, but don't let that stop you if you have a smaller party. It's a good time, especially when you add some mustard to your sourdough. The cheese does get bubbling hot the longer it's on the table, so watch your tongue. The kitchen vegetarian-ized my risotto (and offered to vegan-ize it, which I thought was awesome). It was overcooked, but the flavors were lovely. I most appreciated the crunchy hominy crumble, which added a nice texture to the dish. Even with the misstep in technique, Brenner Pass gets five stars from me for flavor and hospitality. read more

What a lovely restaurant with a unique and outstanding menu! We were passing through Richmond and wanting to try something new and different. Brenner Pass is that place. For a special meal, or a gathering with friends, we were impressed with every aspect of the experience and food. Well spaced tables allow for a relaxed atmosphere around a gorgeous bar area. There are plenty of choices on a relatively succinct menu, but the preparation of each is what sets this place apart. The Italian Long Beans were grilled to a delish perfection, with a sherry glaze and a 'hummus' of farmers cheese to start us off, accompanied by the crispy Chickpeas, which take you to a completely different place from what you expect of those typically juicy beans. The Grilled Mackerel with its beans, summer squash and Trumpet Mushrooms served in a delicate but incredible basin of sauce was a great bridge into what was an incredible topper, the Cappelletti, which is a wonderful round and delicate pasta with ricotta cheese inside and a robust suite of sauteed cherry tomatoes with a basil edge. Oh my! The service was tremendous, which is especially important because the prep on the menu is so different, you will enjoy the details and descriptions of the wonderous things you'll want to try. Had one of THE best meals I've had in some time at Brenner Pass a few weekends ago. Starting with the drinks, I had the delicious Pearental Advisory cocktail & my date had a tasty beer. We moved on to sharing the beef tartare which was seasoned wonderfully. As our main, we split the scallops & a beautiful potato side dish I can't remember the name of but it was an amazing pairing. The scallops were some of the best I've ever eaten! To finish, we got coffees & split the pecorino cake, which our waiter described as a mix between a cheesecake & a pound cake. Wow! Earthy crisp decorated vibe with warm lighting. High ceiling in part of restaurant makes it a bit loud if your seated in the main area so go early if you like a quieter evening. We were seated on the border of the entrance and main area so we're able to have ez convos. Service was friendly and helpful from start to finish. I ordered the Crayola Goatee which is a whiskey based drink and it was delish and incredibly smooth. My son enjoyed the alcohol free "the substance" which was refreshing and light with a nice warm spice finish and my husband got a dark lager on draft which he really liked- always challenging to find a dark beer on draft at most places. We ordered the fondue for the appetizer along with a few drinks and loved all of it! So sad I forgot to take a picture of the towering dippers for the fondue! It was so impressive I got lost in the moment. Yay! The dippers included roasted cauliflower, cornichons, bread, potatoes and speck. All of it was perfect with the melted cheese . For dinner we got the arctic char, the ribeye and the cacio de Pepe. We were all very happy with our choices. The char was delicate and incredibly flavorful and was rich and light at the same time. My husband and son split the ribeye and the pasta which made the perfect plate. Opinions stating that the ribeye was better than bookbinders were made and no arguments offered . For dessert the smoked pumpkin pot de Creme won easily over the chocolate torte and the pistachio financier came in close second for its uniqueness. The torte was the only less than stellar item of the evening but everything else was so good it didn't matter. We will definitely be back read more

After more than 2.5 years in RVA, finally checked out Brenner Pass for dinner with my wife and a friend visiting from Chesapeake. It was a Wednesday night so it wasn't very busy but we still had a reservation. The decor inside is very modern, minimal and low lit which makes for good atmosphere for any occasion from a date to a business dinner. Our server was easy going, friendly and helpful. We were seated near a table of girls who were a little loud and at one point were attempting antics like the splits... definitely not a reflection of the establishment or the other guests. Guessing they had one too many. Our server comped one of our appetizers and brought us a complementary coup of sparking at the end of our meal as a thanks and sorry. Nice touch! We shared the pumpkin polenta bread and chickpeas to start. Both good but probably didn't need the bread. Do recommend the chickpeas for a snack with your first round of drinks. My cocktail was the Scents & Subtle Sounds, a smoky and refreshing drink. I'd describe it as a mezcal martini with a twist. We then shared a bottle of French Chardonnay since our entrees were lighter. My friend and I both had the arctic char and my wife had the white bolognese tagliatelle. The arctic char was great. Similar to salmon though I thought char was a white fish. It was on a bed of horseradish farro which was delicious and was accompanied by beets and some walnuts. I generally don't care for beets but they really harmonized well with the horseradish farro and gave it that hint of earthiness. The walnuts added a little crunchy texture to some of the bites, which I enjoy. Excellent and thoughtful fall fish offering. I was so excited to try Brenner Pass for the first time and it exceeded my expectations! The restaurant has a beautiful interior as well as a shaded patio. The cool lighting and candles make it a great place for for a celebratory dinner or date night. You can also make reservations in advance. The menu rotates in order to serve what is fresh and in season. I order the Tuna Confit. It was divine! The ingredients were all incredibly fresh and flavorful. I enjoy every bite! My friend's scalloped dish also looked fantastic. Additionally, the serve specialty drinks and desserts. We order the Pot de Crème and I would highly recommend it. Really enjoyable spot from a recent Top Chef contestant. Probably my favorite of many top-tier spots on our most recent trip to Richmond. Our server was kind, funny, and attentive. We quickly ordered wine, and picked the Kolfolk Intra! The Wild Red, which was fantastic. We paired this with the fondue appetizer. We were warned that the fondue could be a bit too large as it is meant to serve up to 4, but we were like "watch this" and devoured the entire thing easily because it was SO delicious. Whoever thought to provide little cocktail pickles/ cornichons as dipping material is a genius. We still had room afterward somehow, so we also ordered the bolognese bianco, which was extremely unique and very memorable and tasty. For dessert, we finished things off with the chocolate pot de creme, which might be one of my top desserts of all time. Really. Everything was pleasant and the atmosphere was refined. This meal was definitely a treat in many ways, but I hope to be back on our next trip down to RVA for more of that amazing fondue - and everything else. read more

Not impressed. We went for valentine's day and it was $85 per person with a prix fixed menu. We ordered the snapper tartare, mussels, rockfish, fried hen of the woods mushrooms, chocolate torte and the elevated Funnel cakes (I forgot the name of them). We also ordered 4 drinks total and they were so inconsistent. The first one was okay, but the next 2, which were the same drinks were not good at all. The appetizers were okay. We enjoyed the mussels, so I was excited for the rest of the course, but was severely let down. The rockfish was pretty small and had very fishy skin on top. The best thing on the plate were the mustard greens, so that's saying something. The fried hen of the woods mushrooms with risotto was super disappointing. The risotto was soooo overcooked and soggy. Then we got our desserts and were flabbergasted with how small the chocolate torte was. I wanted to ask the waitress where the rest of it was. Overall, after spending over $300, we will unfortunately not be coming back. read more

Went to Brenner Pass for a work dinner. It was a Tuesday evening so the restaurant was quiet. We had a great time. We weren't a huge party so the setting was great. We had an attentive server, who appeared to be very mindful and gave us time and space to talk. Being available while not persistent. I enjoyed a rum based cocktail to start with, it was delicious. It was strong yet smooth and easy to drink. We ordered the donuts to share as starters, why it's called donut is a mystery. But it was delicious. Very rich flavor! Although happy we shared as a full one would have been excessive. For the main course, some of my party chose the mackerel or burger. I went for the scallops. They were very well cooked and the eggplant purée and sides went great together. We ordered a variety of desserts to share: highly recommend the chocolate mousse. That was the winner for me! It was Saturday, I am glad we made a reservation. We had our seat on time. Food was ok but really nothing special. The roast beef was pretty dry, and the meatloaf tasted no meat inside. Salads were great! Fresh green with delicious dressing. The best thing to eat were French Toast and grilled oranges. We saw people there with families and friends. Had a lovely time at Brenner Pass to celebrate our anniversary! When we arrived there was a card awaiting us which was a lovely touch. The bartender poured us two glass of complimentary bubbles to celebrate! We started with oysters and the crudo which were amazing!!! The crudo was bright and refreshing. The oysters were wavelengths from VA. I am not normally an east coast oyster girl but these were delicious! For entrees my husband got the burger and I got the octopus and pepperoni gnocchi. Both were decadent! The burger was so good one of the best my husband has had. It's perfectly juicy and the horseradish on it goes so well with everything. The gnocchi was awesome-- if you haven't had octopus don't be afraid it the octopus is tender and a lovely part of the dish. For dessert we got the pot de crème which was also great and had a layer of a coffee whip situation on top. It was so good! I got two drinks the solipsis -- kind of like a white Negroni and the Palermo - margarita like. My husband had a Mezcal Negroni type drink and another drink that we can't recall the name of! Brenner Pass is the most exceptional restaurant in every way: modern industrial styling, inviting ambience, outstanding staff, wonderful menu offerings, specialty cocktails, and a well priced wine selection. The restaurant is spacious, yet separated into intimate dining areas with a wooden slatted decorative wall, varying tables sizes, and an elegant bar area, allowing for private conversations and buffered noise. The wait staff is top notch, super friendly and well versed in the menu options. My daughter and I came to celebrate my birthday. I was showered with well wishes - a birthday card with a sweet message from the staff waiting at my seat, a complimentary glass of sparkling wine for me and my daughter, and a lit candle with my dessert. For dinner, I went with fish of the day: snapper - made to perfection. My daughter had a gourmet burger with delicate, crispy fries. We shared the banana zeppole with a rum caramel and ginger sauce. We loved every bite of our main courses and dessert. The restaurant will introduce a new dining concept following a brief closure at the end of August. Brenner Pass is our favorite fine dining spot in Richmond. I will also argue they make the best Ribeye in town! For drinks we had: - Not Peeling Well - if you are in the mood for a sweet apple flavored cocktail this is for you. Also much larger portion than most cocktails here. - Solipsis - light, tanqueray based drink that went wonderfully with the Flounder. - Espresso Martini - on par with what you would expect. The grilled focaccia is a must order, they always mix up the butters and cheeses. It never misses. The ribeye is the best in town, perfectly flavored, often offered with delicious truffles, and this time with tasty side of creamed spinach. Burger was good, but would recommend ordering something more interesting. Savory donut was delicious and if you like raw fish try the crudo, the presentation was wonderful. The Tartiflette is also a must order, we get it as a side to our main course every time. The hearty bacon mixed with scalloped potatoes is to die for. Brenner Pass always keeps the menu fresh! I love the ambiance of Brenner Pass, however because of their open concept it can get quite loud if you're near a particularly rowdy party like we were. The staff recognized this almost immediately though and moved us to another, much quieter area across the restaurant, which we were very appreciative of. We tried quite a few different items on their rotating menu, which were good. This is a more expensive menu so I tend to have higher expectations when it comes to flavor; especially if the portions are small which they were. This is an update to the glowing review I left after our first visit to Brenner Pass. We've been back twice, and I'm not sure we will be back again, sadly. The atmosphere was a lovely as ever, and our waitress was friendly, professional and helpful. We waited quite a while for our starters, but we didn't mind because we were enjoying conversation over drinks. Now to the food... and the three star review. First, the menu had shrunk considerably, although there is still something for everyone. I was disappointed that the website menu was not updated with the current menu. Surely that isn't too difficult? We started with the corn and chanterelles and summer Flammkuchen. The corn was delicious - fresh and nicely spiced. The Flammkucken with blue cheese, tomatoes and greens was tasty but the dough was undercooked and a bit gummy. For main courses my husband had ribeye with tomatoes, and I had the cappelletti with blue crab. The ribeye was well cooked and the aged beef of high quality, but the 12 oz steak had none of the tender "cap", and the promised caper and herb sauce was scantily applied. One caper on the plate. The roasted tomatoes were tasty, but the dish overall was just OK and certainly not filling. The cappelletti was absolutely delicious, but again, small; my plate had 4 cappelletti and a small sprinkling of crab. We decided not to get dessert. We enjoyed the evenings but expected more from this chef, especially given the prices charged for food and drinks. read more

I went with some friends to Brenner Pass for the first time and was impressed with the experience. The staff was attentive and the service was quick. And the food was delicious. We had a 9pm reservation, so by the time we were there, they had run out of several entree options, but everyone in the group was able to find something they enjoyed. The restaurant is located in a quiet section of Scott's Addition, and parking was easy to find. The restaurant had very stylish decoration, but we did notice that when the restaurant was full, it got very loud and was hard to hear - the acoustics aren't the best. As a fan of the show Top Chef, our first stop on a weekend getaway from D.C. to Richmond was Brenner Pass, helmed by Top Chef Portland contestant Brittany Anderson. Celebrating my birthday, we saw Brenner Pass as our main birthday dinner celebration. Here's our experience: 1) Food: The menu is Alpine inspired with fondue, cheese boards and gnocchi on the menu. Even the more American items like burgers have an Alpine spin to them (fondue on a burger- genius!). For a group of three adults and one toddler, we ordered the fondue, both burgers and agnolotti. Everything was very good except for the agnolotti, which was fine, but not outstanding. The cheese in the fondue was excellent and it comes with a plate of potatoes, bread, asparagus and speck. The Brenner Pass Burger comes with fondue on it making it pop. The fries that come with the burgers are perfectly fried. 2) Drinks: They have a full beer, wine and cocktail menu. They make their own cocktails that hit all types of preferences. As someone who prefers slightly more sweet drinks, I ordered the Escalation and found it refreshing. 3) Space: During the pandemic, they have outdoor seating only. An open-air tent is set up with small tables. When you use the restrooms inside, take in the space. It's beautifully designed and very welcoming. 4) Service: This was an area that needed improvement, but it was also a very windy evening, which I think threw off our server. Also, our table was in the corner, which maybe was hard to see, but service was very slow. It took 15 minutes for us to be acknowledged. If we needed anything, we had to proactively get out of our chairs and find our server. When she was with us, she wasn't very friendly. 5) Price: It's all more expensive, but we're used to that coming from Washington, D.C. However, $36 for a smaller pot of fondue seemed a bit much. A nice touch was the personal card waiting for us on the table wishing me a happy birthday. :) read more

The portion sizes are wildly different yet all roughly the same price.. some meals at our table were large and some were 4 bites of pasta. The waiter said mine was light but did not mention it would literally be 4 noodles compared to the full, larger sizes for the rest of the table was disappointing. Those with larger sized portions were rationing food for the rest of the table. I took my family here for to celebrate my dad's retirement and it was not worth the $500 spent. read more

What a beautiful place! I had my birthday dinner there with 7 friends this weekend. Our server was knowledgeable, gave great recommendations, and made us feel so invited. The service over was impeccable, waters never empty, empty dishes whisked away so quickly! We did a lot of shared plates, small bites to start, and shared entrees, they did a full flatware & plates which was so lovely. The duck breast over polenta, tartiflette, and croquette we're the biggest hit but you can never forget a cheese a meat board. Our favorite cocktails were The Lords Work and Cap Gun Standoff, also to have 8 cocktails come out at the same time is always a great indexation of how the evening will go. Had a lovely dining experience with Brittanny Anderson's European/Alpine-inspired menu in Scott's Addition. The interior is light and bright and decor hints to elements of the Alps. I had the Snow Bunny, a craft cocktail, and a European-style beer to accompany my meal. We shared the Malakoff, which was a Gruyère cheese bomb with Dijon, the shrimp cocktail which had both a remoulade and cocktail sauce, the agnolotti which were pillows of pasta with a delightfully spicy pork ragu, the roasted eggplant which melted in my mouth, and finally the pork ribs, which were just too salty to enjoy, but that is my only complaint. It is within easy striking distance to numerous breweries and entertainment hot spots, making it an ideal destination for a romantic evening out. This was not my first time here, but every visit is a fresh reminder of everything this restaurant gets so right about the dining .  The airy, open-concept space achieves a perfectly blended between Richmond warehouse and alpine ski lodge . The thoughtful and creative use of chevron wooden accents, juxtaposed with the modernity of the polished concrete flooring and black metal fittings and fixtures throughout the restaurant do a lot to make the place feel , . Also, the bar is a work of art with lighting that highlights the held within its shelves . One of my all time favorite dishes, the fondue is a must try for all cheese lovers. It truly can be a meal in and of itself paired with a glass (or bottle) of one of their many cultivated offerings. The cheese is melted gruyère and emmentaler and comes with sliced sourdough , fingerling potatoes , speck (an italian cured meat) , veggies (such as squash), and cornichons (pickles) . My personal favorite for dipping was the fingerling potatoes- it was like a deconstructed potato au gratin. Plus, I'm a sucker for any food offering that's also an activity. Next on the was a scallop special (the pictures don't do it justice). I can't remember everything that was listed in the description, but this was absolutely delicious. My dining partner had the duck breast - cooked to perfection, and served on polenta. I'll order just about anything if it's got the words grits or polenta involved- enough said. Always a ! Chose this restaurant for a birthday dinner, as we had seen the owner/head chef on one of our favorite cooking shows and were quite impressed. Not overly impressed with the food, esp for the high price. Some may find my points nit-picky- and I understand these issues were likely part of the chef's overall vision. But left us disappointed. If you are going to make a fabulous, complex sauce, GIVE US SAUCE! Dots on a plate do not count. If you are going to describe a dish as including kumquats, a few razor thin slices on the plate do not count. The roasted oysters were covered in a mound of bland breadcrumbs. Grilled bread had acrid char on it from the grill. A bit burnt is OK- this was a horrible flavor of grill bits. Duck breast was cooked perfectly and the cardamom cake was one of the best desserts I have ever had. Service was exceptional. For the price though, you have to knock our socks off. If Metzgers was Brittney Anderson on Bobby Flay Triple Threat, then Brenner Pass is her going out in the first episode of Top Chef. We loved the food at Metzgers, but was truly disappointed by our experience at Brenners Pass. The restaurant was so loud we could not hear each other talk and the design was very cold. The appetizers were pretty good and maybe the highlight of the meal but the tuna we had could've been totally left out of the dish because the veggies were so good and the sauce was so incredible, my friend had the pork belly and it was so fatty and had no flavor that he sent it back. My friend, the birthday girl loved her trout. It was very very tasty. I had the chicken masala and it was just OK. It was not the juiciest piece of chicken or the tastiest sauce. My boyfriend really enjoyed his cavatelli. Another friend got the trout as well and there's was raw in the middle. Not like it was a rare piece of fish, but it's just completely raw.We saw a lot of people getting the hamburger and we kind a wish we had as well. The cocktails were interesting and overall pretty tasty, but we will not be returning. read more

This review was for our recent 3rd visit. Our initial visits were very good, which is why we returned, but our latest visit will be our last. Our server had a snippy attitude and was very unattentive as we attempted to order our drinks/food. Forget about checking on us after the food came... We wanted the bartender to come up with a drink idea, but she didn't listen to our suggestion, and then got flustered and rude when the drink didn't turn out well. Ordering was very challenging as the menu was limited and there was at least one secret substitution -- when attempting to order the sea bass we were told that they were serving red snapper instead. That should have been mentioned to start. The server convinced us it would be good, so ordered it, but when it came out it was a very small and cheap piece (lots of blood lines in it), was partially burnt and partially raw. Totally gross. We ordered the agnolotti which was a very small portion for an entree and the broth was flavorless - basically water. The burger was good but the fries weren't. The fries tasted frozen and they didn't come with any sauce for dipping. We asked for ketchup and received a micro dose of it. The host/manager came and helped resolve the initial issues but overall we had an absolutely terrible experience with the food and service, and would much rather go elsewhere in the future. read more

When you think of Richmond You should be thinking of good food. However often times this city does not deliver in terms of a balance between quality, quality, ambience. Brenner pass strikes a nice balance between all these different aspects. The food is great quality the price is reasonable, and I love the interior. 2/17/2023..Ambiance is just lovely.. a very inviting modern vibe. Our service was also spot on.. thank you!! Now to the food.... overall underwhelming. The fried oysters were too heavily breaded and the potato gratin was undercooked. Focaccia was fabulous..with a delightful truffle cheese sauce. Tagliatelle was tasty but no wow factor. Rockfish was cooked well, but the sauce was too watery and could not be enjoyed with the fish. In desperation we ordered French fries but they were over salted. The appetizer menu had a large number of cheesy options... great for some but not so for others. Having said that the Flammkuchen...pizza with taleggio drizzled with honey was a hit for this cheese lover. Finished off with a fabulous chocolate torte. The menu was much more limited than what is published online so that was disappointing. Also no specials were offered. After years of having it on my list after watching the owner on Top Chef, I finally made it to Brenner Pass! Who knew Scott's Addition had such a sexy restaurant hidden between all the bars & breweries. My bestie & I made a reservation for dinner on Friday which required a card to be put down in case of last minute cancellations (they will charge you per person lol). We ordered the carrot appetizer, the duck, and the rockfish! The carrots were surprisingly delicious and for $14 I was hoping it'd be the case. Loved the smokiness of them and the crunchy chili bits. My rockfish was quite tasty with the sauce however I could have done without the abundance of roe...it was too much for me. I also wish the skin on my fish was crispy, if you're gonna keep the skin on gotta do it right! The parsnip purée was delicious however they only give you a little smear.. one bite and its gone *cries*. My friend enjoyed his duck entree and from what I tasted it was decent but not something I would order. Our server Katrina was lovely and very personable. I would definitely check out Brenner Pass again and try some of the other items on the menu.. I have my eye on the octopus! read more

Surprisingly above average. I was expecting good, and this was remarkably good. Excellent value for the money. Much appreciated. The chefs here have real skill. Good simple variety of choices. It seems at least 1 entree to please any flavor profile preferences. read more

Amazing food - although I would like more guidance from the server on how to order, as some entrees should be shared since they aren't a complete meal. The fish, for example, is not served with vegetables and a starch, and could have been shared. The decor is a little trendy, I think sound proofing the ceiling would help make it cozier as it was so loud we couldn't hear each other at the table, and the room was not full. Overall, every bite was delicious and I will be back to try the fondue! read more
