No one in our group had done an escape room before, but the staff were very friendly for beginners and guiding us when we needed help! The room we had was interesting, had a nice blend of needing to think outside the box, but not so much that things couldn't be solved. There are Breakout Games locations all over the United States. I went to the Breakout Games located in Woburn, MA with a group of 4. Our friends have been here before so they knew exactly where to go. This location is in a complex with other businesses and its in the back of the building. There are quite a few different game options and time slots to choose from. We chose the Bomb Squad game. A bomb is hidden in the city and time is ticking. Our mission was to find the bomb and defuse it before it's too late. All of their rooms are private so when we booked a game, it's just us and our team with no strangers. It was easy to book and pay for our room online. When we arrived, they showed us where the bathrooms were down the hallway in the building. The lobby is pretty simple with a few seats and a description of the game rooms. We were then escorted to our room. The rules were explained to us by our game master and then the 60 minute timer started. The puzzles required team building, communication skills, problem-solving and critical thinking abilities. We escaped with 5 minutes and 45 seconds left. It was a lot of fun. The game master gave us helpful hints to keep us progressing through the game. We chose the casino room not realizing you had to know how to play multiple card games! We had no disclaimer on the difficulty level or people recommended. More information on the website would be really helpful. They even told us that a certain part was too hard to do with two people after we had paid and played the game. We were not able to complete the room partially due to that. Our game master was not paying attention for part of the game and kept going over things we already did when we asked for hints, which is not something I've experienced before. She also did not know how to do some of the math in the games, which wasted some of our time. I have been to many escape rooms and I have always felt much more immersed and completed them! For the price it was a bad experience. I think if it was more affordable and you had more people it would be better. Way too hard for a small group. read more

We went to Breakout back in Feb 2020 and played "Operation: Casino" and "Museum Heist". "Operation: Casino" Our mission was to find the alias of a missing agent and bring down the syndicate responsible for his disappearance. Our clues led us to a casino... HIT THE BULLSEYE -Right away this room "screamed" fun. There were various types of casino games placed around the room. It does help a little if you already know the rules of some of the games, but there were clear instructions so outside knowledge was not necessary. -The spacious room and nonlinear puzzle designs were great for large teams and/or experienced players who loves a challenge. -The story was incorporated within the puzzles and presented a clear ending. -From evidence collecting, deductive reasoning, logical thinking, and making the final call on who was the syndicate, we felt like we were real detectives working on a case. MISSED THE MARK -One puzzle confused us as we were not used to one challenge having multiple solutions. -We would've loved to see one of the puzzles at its full capacity but unfortunately it malfunctioned that day. It also caused a bit of confusion for us since it felt like a solvable piece. -Some casino sounds would be great to add to the atmosphere of the room. TAKE A SHOT? Love espionage? Sherlock Holmes? Clue? You'll probably want to give this room a try. Putting clues together piece by piece and ultimately finding "the one" was satisfying. There was a lot to do with just the 2 of us, so if you are just starting out with escape rooms, we suggest a larger group. Have fun and catch the bad guy! "Museum Heist" We are hired to steal a rare art collection that was stolen by a thief from the museum. Let's see how this pans out... HIT THE BULLSEYE -Although the decor of the room was not as impressive as some other Breakout Games that we've seen, we still enjoyed the puzzle elements of this room. -One puzzle in particular, incorporated physical and logical elements which ultimately gave us a strong and surprising ending. -We liked how Breakout Games tried to put us in the mindset of an actual thief and our entire game play was based on what a thief would do in these situations. The puzzles were intertwined within this thought process. MISSED THE MARK -The initial space could use some more puzzle elements and decor as it felt like a waste of an area right now and the décor could also have more of a nighttime kind of feel. This could add a more "mysterious" feeling of breaking and entering. -Some props needed updating. There was a cool puzzle element that needed repairing and it would've added to the surprise element of the room if it had been working. -One puzzle was a bit confusing for us from a word play perspective. TAKE A SHOT? If you are good at picking locks, this is the room for you. Just kidding... then you'll probably be good at every escape room! Some puzzles felt challenging with just the two of us but it's definitely doable. The room is spacious enough for us to recommend an ideal group of 4 people. Pros: -All rooms are private (though if the price varies between $23.99 and $33.99 based on number of people you have) -Abundance of parking -Unlimited clues -Rooms are nicely decorated -Row of different types of locks in the entry is helpful for practice Cons: -Entry area is small and kind of boring (though there are restrooms in a shared space down the hall). It would be nice if they added puzzles like other escape franchises I've seen. -Short-staffed? They don't always have someone out front to greet/answer phones if they're watching games. When we tried to call prior to our visit, it took at least 15-20 minutes to get an answer. I've been here twice now and would certainly consider coming again! read more

This place is so awesome! The puzzles are very well done, and there is a great variety of puzzle types. Staff is always super friendly and helpful. You can get as many hints as you need, and they do a great job helping you move to the next step without giving away too much. You want to have at least 3 people since you can solve multiple puzzles at once. It also helps to have different points of view if one person gets stuck. Middle school math skills are needed for most rooms. If you bring kids, at least 2 adults are recommended if they are under 12 (one to keep them busy and another to solve puzzles). Little ones will enjoy finding hidden objects and opening locks, while teens can actually help with the puzzles. The rooms aren't scary, although there are little surprises such as secret doors opening when you solve a puzzle. Overall, just a fantastic experience! read more

Went to Breakout Games this past weekend with some family members. Four adults, one teen, three smaller children. We did the Museum Heist room. Loved it! Everyone had a great time! The group had various levels of experience. Several, including myself, have done many rooms at many establishments. Breakout is one of the best companies I've been to. The puzzles were complex without being non-sensical (which is a common complaint). For every puzzle in the room, there was someone who saw fairly quickly what was going to be needed to solve it. Not everyone understood every puzzle (which is the mark of a good setup) but with four adults someone in the group grasped what needed to be done. The hint system is also among the best. I've been to rooms where hints are given unsolicited and I HATE THAT. There is nothing worse than having your groups flow f*ed up by the voice of god telling you what you have to do right now. At Breakout, hints must be requested AND everyone in the group has to agree before a hint can be given. We needed to request a hint just once and our Gamemaster already knew which clue we'd overlooked. By telling us which clue to re-visit, everything fell into place and we were able to complete the room without and further hints. She also let us know when we somehow fudged entering the code for one of the locks. Her gentle, "You should try that again." was greatly appreciated. Came here for a friends birthday and achieved my 2nd victory every!! It was $29 per person and we split into 2 teams. One regarding an Art Heist, the other was a Casino theme. Fortunately, I was part of the Art Heist and we escaped the room! I like how the rooms weren't too hard, we just have to stop overthinking. The other plus side is that we have unlimited hints/clues! And the only way to use the clue is if the group unanimously agrees to use it. This is located in Woburn which is quite close to me, I'd definitely come back! read more

Christian Krenek, the Dauphin D'Escape Rooms, again--reviewing the last room at Breakout Woburn! I've played and won the others with various teams, and hoped to get a "perfect" record by winning this one--Operation Casino--as well. It was admittedly a close finish...but we did it! This is probably one of the best games that Breakout has to offer--a fun story, great puzzles, and a simple but elegant set design. In this Operation, you play as MI-6 agents trying to track down the missing 007, who was last reported going into a casino controlled by the Syndicate, Breakout's bad guy group (they're the same villains who tried to take over the city in Undercover Alley!). Your mission is to find out what happened to your fellow agent and locate the Syndicate's secret headquarters. The casino set looks great, with genuine props of all kinds of games, and the spy theme adds additional flair (no tuxes or secret gadgets, though). The best part of an escape room, though, are the puzzles, and Operation Casino did not disappoint! The room has a great balance of finding hidden objects, logic puzzles, and--most of all--mathematical challenges. You won't need advanced calculus, but come with a calculator on the brain! The room also does a good job of having multiple puzzles to work on simultaneously, avoiding bottlenecks; there is even a task that lasts across the game, so you can always take a break to work on something else. Finally, our game-runner Thomas deserves a special shout-out: he answered all of our questions and was a great host. Ask for Thomas when you play! Breakout Games is one of the biggest companies in the business, and games like Operation Casino prove why: they mix old-school puzzle solving with interesting stories and challenges that make you think in unique ways. I had an amazing time and even after leaving can't stop thinking about my experience. I was looking for a late night activity to do with my best friend for her birthday. We were tired of the typical club/lounge outings. I found this on yelp and immediately booked when I saw a 10:50 on a Thursday evening. I arrived and my game master/host was awesome. I can't remember his name although I asked 25 times but he made our experience hilarious and worth it. I thought booking the last slot on a weekday night he'd be annoyed and ready to go but he was BEYOND patient, which exhibits great customer service. We left around 12:30 am. We did the runaway train which we heard was the most difficult. It was difficult but we were soooo close to getting out. I'm booking it again and I'm super excited ! read more

My family is on vacation and we have been to Breakout Games in Woburn twice this week. The first time was just our family of 4 to play 'Do Not Disturb' which we came close to solving. Our kids are 11 and 8 and were able to successfully help and enjoyed the adventure. Last night with 4 other friends we played 'The Runaway Train!' This time we had 4 adults and 4 kids and we were successful and solved this mystery! It was a lot of fun both times. The kids enjoyed it too! Both of our Game Masters were great! Honestly so much freaking fun!!! We went for an event and there was a bunch of people there at the same time. The place was a little difficult to find (how ironic haha) so be wary when using google maps. We decided to sign up for the museum room. There were 4 of us on our team but i believe you can have as little as 2 and obviously a lot more as well. I want to shout out David who works there! He was our game master and he was so great at explaining what we needed to do, and just had an overall friendly fun personality. The great thing about this escape room that differs from others I have done in the past is the fact that there is no limit on how many hints you get. Of course we tried to keep our questions minimal but it does make it more plausible that you might get out!!! I have done many rooms before this and this was by far my favorite. We did escape the room with 6 minutes to spare. I will be headed back to try some of the other rooms too. read more

I booked two rooms this weekend for a group of 16 people celebrating a birthday. First and foremost, everyone in both rooms had a great time and by all reports, both escape rooms (we did Casino and Museum Heist) were well-designed and fun. Do you know how hard it is to get 16 people to agree about any activity being fun?? Secondly (and equally as important in my book), the staff at this location could not have been more friendly or accommodating. Have wanted to try this for months and finally got to try it today with my niece. David was our game master (I think that's what he's called?) and he was super friendly and helpful. We did Kidnapped and with the blindfold and handcuffs (that's part of the website description, so I'm not giving anything away!), it felt eerily like we were in a Saw situation, though thankfully not scary!! David explained everything with just enough detail and useful information and answered all of our questions before we went in. I've done just one other escape room but liked this one better as it was more immersive. The other had three rooms and so there were only a few puzzles per room. This one felt more immersive because of the great detail in all the props. The puzzles were creative and most were difficult without being impossible, though admittedly my niece and I only got about 2/3 of the puzzles done before time was up. David gave hints when we needed them without us feeling like we were dumb for asking. My niece, who's 20, had a blast and couldn't stop talking about it afterwards. I will definitely try the other rooms soon!!! Love this as a fun way to spend an hour especially with the winter months coming up when I'll want more indoor activities to do! read more

They proved that they know what good customer service looks like and I look forward to giving this business a second chance. ORIGINAL REVIEW: (1 star) When I called at 5:59pm to fully book a room for this evening for the 8:45pm game, I was informed that there is a 3 hour policy and that it's impossible to book a room if you are within that 3 hour window. Ok, fine. I thought it seemed a little unreasonable due to the fact that I was only 19 minutes beyond the window and wanted to book for the whole room. Our group then decided that we had no problem with the later time and called right back to book the 9pm. It was 6:05 when I called. Again, I was outside the 3 hour window. I understand why policies like this are put in place to avoid unnecessary staffing, but it seems like a bit of flexibility should be put into place to account for situations where a whole room could be booked. However, the reason neither I nor anyone in my book will ever go to this business is 100% due to the horrible customer service of the employee that I spoke with on the phone, Peter. When I tried to ascertain if there was any flexibility in their 3 hour window policy he was incredibly rude. He mockingly said "Gee, it's really hard to not get your way, isn't it?" I told him that due to his demeanor we wouldn't be booking there as long as they employed people that spoke to potential customers as he did. Peter is definitely the type of employee that loses a business money in creating non-repeat customers due to his lack of empathy and respect. But, shoutout to Christopher, the other employee I spoke with. He was polite and informative. More Christopher and less Peter is what makes a business money. read more

I've done 2 rooms here now and the first was great (Do Not Disturb), with a few issues, and the second was super lame (Heist). DND is the sequel to the kidnapping room and it was amazingly fun - loads of really clever clues and a clear narrative. That said, the clear narrative felt a little too rapey for my taste. The audio was just icky. I guess you have to do that to make it scary and tense, but I think it is worth giving some content warning to survivors considering this escape. Not to give it away, but you might also want to talk to the very helpful staff if you have asthma so they can help you pick the best room. Heist was hard to get into because the goal was to catch a thief, not BE the thief. Many of the clues were great, but one of the locks was open!!! That threw us off a little because mostly you open the clues sequentially, so we couldn't really figure out where things were once we found the open lock. It is clear your experience depends a fair bit on your host, but you can't exactly pick the host, so YMMV here. The website makes it really easy to book, price is set by number of people, and the number we had on our reservation went down by 1 on the day of the escape and they kindly credited me instead of making me eat the cost. So generous! I'll be back to try another room and will update my review. read more

Breakout Games - We did it!!! - Escape Games Near Me - Woburn, Massachusetts

4 of us chose the Casino Room. T was our game master. The room had high quality props and plenty of room so we were not on top of each other as we ran around finding clues. T was able to see our progress and checked in appropriately to ask if we needed help from time to time. The puzzles were (mostly) not all linear but there were times we could not proceed as a group without a specific answer so teamwork is key. This room was challenging and required a mix of big picture and small detail attention. One star docked for a few reasons: The locks have issues where you have to ask your game master if you have the right number before entering as it locks out after 3 unsuccessful attempts. This is the second room we have played that has had this issue, so maybe they should consider different locks. The game masters alert you to this, so you don't get held up. The second issue is one of the clues was not reset, so the answer was in front of us without us solving. Just one, and a mistake, but took away from our problem solving experience. Our game master appeared to have a cold and I felt bad he was working. I totally applaud work ethic but a lower energy didn't match the rest of the staff we encountered. I'd recommend Breakout. Both rooms I experienced we were told were the unofficial hardest room. One we escaped, one we did not. The 2 I played were challenging for sure. Bring your best game! read more

We signed up for a 7:30 p.m. round of Operation: Casino but when we got there (not late!) they had started without us :( Staff was very nice and apologetic and gave us the option of joining the already-started room, doing another room now, or waiting for the 9:00 p.m. game. They were a little nervous because they were specifically staffed to only be running one room at a time -- There were only two people there, so one to run the room and one to staff the lobby -- but allowed us to play The Kidnapping by ourselves, which I was actually even more excited about! It was fun! It was a little different from last time because, as I said before, they weren't staffed for this situation -- The Game Master wasn't able to monitor us the whole time, so sometimes I was just shouting at the room waiting for a response asking if it was OK for me to potentially destroy stuff, not realizing he wasn't there. In some ways it was similar to my last experience in that you could tell the staff were really trying to do good by the customers and the puzzles were still decent. So despite another tiny kerfuffle I'm happy with my experience overall and am still eager to play more games here! read more

We did the Kidnapped room with our kids and really enjoyed it. Ali and Gabe were great and gave us some hints when we needed them but not too many. The storyline was a little creepy but overall the room was very well done. Other escape rooms that we've done at other locations can get quite complex but we found this room to be challenging without being frustrating. Had a great time here with a friend plus some strangers! Our gamemaster/host David was great - I liked that the hint system was more of a dialogue opportunity so that David could actually answer some "questions" (i.e. "no, that's not a part of the puzzle, don't pull on that"). I participated in the museum heist escape room, which was well designed but unfortunately some "pre-guessing" rendered some of the later clues worthless and hindered our progress. I won't spoil how many rooms there were (or if there are more than one room), but at one point having so many things to interact with in one space without a clear path made things a little difficult. BUT maybe it was just that we were not great puzzle solvers, so I can't blame it on the design. And again, without spoiling anything, it was hard to figure out what it would take to "complete" the puzzles (aka how many stolen artworks are we looking for? Do we take the art with us? Etc.). Maybe some clarification on that front could help make the experience more immersive! Had a great time and would love to be back to try out a different one! read more

Had a great time doing "Do Not Disturb" (a sequel to "Kidnapped") with three teens. The pacing of this room was better than Museum Heist (our first visit) giving you some early wins and buildinh up your confidence before the tougher puzzles kicked in. Our guide Lexi was perfect, giving us just enough information to help us figure things out ourselves and interceding when we had gone too far down a really unproductive & time consuming path. The room effects were fun and just creepy enough to keep the fun kidnapper vibe going. It can be hard to find something that teens like to do with the parents (and vice versa) and this really fit the bill. We'll be back! read more

Just like the Escape The Room model, it's got a few different rooms for challenges -- we got the one where we had been kidnapped and needed to find clues from past kidnappees who had left clues behind on how to escape. A group of five of us visited Woburn Tuesday midday for a visit to the Runaway Train breakout room. As a group of first-timers, we were all a little anxious about what to expect. After a brief overview from our host, we were locked in our room to watch a short film which set up the challenge...we had an hour to stop a runaway train. Then we just stood there looking around, but once we got going, we were caught up in the fun. Every once in a while, our host would make an announcement into the room with a little prompt. At one point, when we tried multiple combinations to open a lock, we finally all agreed to ask for guidance. Just the tiniest hint was provided, which put us back on track again. Several times, we celebrated our victories with high fives, then when we stopped the runaway train with time to spare, we all hugged! However, the voice from afar taunted, "you're not done." We still had to unlock the train doors to save the passengers, which we approached in a panic. It turns out we had plenty of time, since we escaped with over 4 minutes to spare. The only difficulty was that some of the reading material was a little small, and for a group of women approaching middle-age, we had a hard time and had to share two pairs of readers among us! But what a fun, mentally stimulating hour we had. We're looking forward to trying another challenge again very soon! read more
