I've done a few escape rooms - this is my second one in Boston. It was so much fun - we really had a blast! We completed the Magician's Study. I cannot remember the name of our gamemaster but they were awesome. We are def not expert escape artists but we really enjoyed our time and our gamemaster was skilled at giving us hints. This is not a linear room but it is a spectacular room! Our group finished in average time but didn't break Neil Patrick Harris' record. We crushed the first puzzle in the top 5% (2:29 vs the average of 6:19). If you love books, adventure, and teamwork, this is a must-try. The ore room tested us with tricky math, but the clever object reuses and adorable hint system made it unforgettable. Minus one star for the discount situation. We had a Harvard student in our group and they only give students discounts for Berklee and MIT. I feel like any college student should get a discount. Also parking is non existent in this area but that seems to be the norm in Boston (please note we came from out of state to play this game). read more

We did The Storyteller's Cabin with 5 people and it was overall pretty easy to figure out, we only got stuck once and had plenty of time left over. Staff was all super nice. Absolutely delightful experience - our gamemaster, Michael, was just precious and was so kind to my child - he gave him a really specific compliment about how he played a part of the game and made that child's entire day. I'm newer to escape rooms than my son is, but I thought this was fantastically immersive and the puzzles were a great level of challenge. It was just the two of us working the room, so Michael graciously let us go until we solved it at the 63-minute mark. We did the Mystery of the Magician's Study - excellent balance of logic puzzles, math puzzles, linguistics.... and a really satisfying final challenge. Highly, highly recommend. Fun experience with our adult son. He gifted it for Christmas. This is the third I have done in past 10 years and my favorite.

I've been to a handful of escape rooms and this is definitely one of my favorites so far. The staff are top-notch at making the experience more immersive and accessible for smaller groups too. The story was great, but so was the interactiveness of the room, and complicated nature of the puzzles that were just challenging enough to still be really fun for beginners. I don't want to give away any spoilers so you'll definitely have to check it out yourself, you won't regret it. It is definitely reasonably priced for what you get! read more

Excellent atmosphere and fun games. If you're looking for an escape game in Boston this is one the best. Boxaroo is located in the heart of Boston, right by all the historic sites. They are small, with only three games currently. We did both the magicians study and the storytellers secret. Both of these games were moderately challenging. For an experienced player they should be fun but not overwhelming. The Magicians study was mostly a linear lock based game. The Storytellers secret was also fairly linear but included almost no locks. Very next generation escape room. It also had you crossing back and forth between rooms quite a bit which was cool. The pacing of both games was good. Of the two rooms, the storyteller's secret was really outstanding in the atmosphere. The puzzles and the set design all worked together flawlessly to create a very fun game. The interaction of the operator in both games was perfect and incorporated in a seamless way that did not detract from the game. I would say this is one of the most fun (if not the most difficult) escape rooms we've done. Especially the Storyteller's secret. I would definitely make time to play this room if you're in Boston. read more

I've done Conundrum Museum and Storyteller's Secret. Can't remember much about Conundrum Museum but I remember enjoying it. Most recently I did Storyteller's Secret; I liked that they reuse a lot of different parts of the room/puzzles which seems to maximize space. The order of the puzzles themselves are fairly linear, so people are more so focusing on the same puzzle since it's the next step, as opposed to other escape rooms where you can kind of go off and do your own thing. I also liked that the puzzles all tied together at the end. It was pretty well thought out and an engaging experience. read more

The study and museum are absolutely fantastic. Perfectly fair and balanced with the right amount of challenge but nothing that feels unfair. The storytellers secret is next level. I've never done an escape room before, but I bought tickets for me and my partner for a birthday surprise. We had SO MUCH FUN! I originally booked the Story room but got the dates wrong and had to switch to what was available (Conundrum) on the correct day. I was nervous because it said Conundrum was the hardest one and there were only two of us. We didn't end up solving it in time, but our guide Miles said we completed about 70-80%, which I think is pretty good for two people! Miles really committed to the bit and was so friendly! Rob also was great giving us a tour and answering our questions, taking photos at the end, etc. Upon leaving, my partner said "Could we do another one on another weekend?". We truly had so much fun and can't wait to come back to try one of the other rooms. read more

An amazing experience at Boxaroo! Boxaroo is located in the basement of a commercial building in Government Center - a very unique and interesting location! The staff was super friendly and guided us from the moment we arrived to the end. We arrived 15 minutes early and was brought to a waiting room where there were puzzles for us to do while we wait for the room to be set up. We chose the Magician's Study for a group of 10 and it was perfect! The puzzles were challenging and the room itself was nicely done. As an escape room enthusiast, I can confidently say that Boxaroo's experiences are top notch! The Storyteller's Secret is a MUST. Very different from your typical escape room experience, in the best way possible. It feels like you're transported into magical new worlds. As a group of 4 seasoned puzzlers, we escaped with ample time to spare. Without the time crunch, you can really explore and immerse yourself in the storytelling. Incredibly smart and intuitive design. FYI there may be a puzzle or two where it's helpful to have more than 2 people, but it's not a requirement. The Conundrum Museum was also a fun one. Without any spoilers, I'll say it's a slight twist on the often overdone art heist. Good for beginners or experienced players. We escaped successfully as a group of 4. The puzzles were really cool and very well thought out. It was very enjoyable and everyone in the group came out with only good things to say. Some of the best I've seen and I've been to nearly 10 rooms around New England -Super helpful, friendly staff -Printout of your stats at the end compared to the average group -Unlimited clues Cons: -No private rooms (unless you book the entire room at the standard price)--other escape rooms have begun offering different prices per room based on how many people in your group, ensuring it is always private -I'm a little confused about the way they give clues as we "used" 3 clues based on our printout but didn't ask for any of them. They seem to be potentially automatic when you pass certain milestones in the room. I prefer asking for each clue so I don't get more help than needed. -No digital clocks in all parts of the room, which makes it hard to keep track of time remaining Would definitely go again! read more

We did the storyteller room, it was perfect! My son (15yo) and I loved it- we do lots of rooms and made it out with 1 min to spare! (They give you 75min!) My family has played nearly 90 escape rooms. Our favorites are always the ones that have immersive sets, cohesive storylines, next generation tech, and puzzles that are varied, challenging, and make sense in supporting the story. If I could give "The Storyteller's Secret" TEN stars, I would! This is actually THE BEST room we have ever played, and we've done rooms all over California, Las Vegas, Reno, Park City, Seattle, and Hawaii. Boxaroo is a small mom/pop operation but the loving detail in this room is off the charts. The designer is an MIT grad, and you can see the high-level conceptual thinking in the engineering and story embedded in this room. It's hard to adequately describe all that sets it apart, but the adventure starts in a high-production value set (a rustic cottage) with a cool A/V effect which explains the quest you are about to undertake. There is a unique hint system introduced right away so before you even really get started you are immediately impressed by the set and eagerly anticipate what's to come. There are no traditional locks in this room. Puzzles unfold organically to the story and are linked in type (word, math, logic, physicality) and content to the plot. Eventually you open additional rooms off of the main room, but refreshingly, you don't progress linearly through them, but gain access to the areas as you need more info/clues/props that support the main puzzles happening in the first room. This means you often have to go back to these side rooms, going in and out to discover and complete all that each side room has to offer. The side rooms open like storybooks that transport you to the fictional world of that book and are distinctive in look, sound, and feel, so you are truly immersed in the magic of the story. This room plays only at maybe a high intermediate level, but because of its complexity and attention-to-detail, is wasted on a group of beginners. You really can't appreciate how amazing this room is unless you have at least a dozen other experiences under your belt. That's not to say first-timers wouldn't enjoy it, but our seasoned team did not realize the true genius of this room until the very end when debriefing with our game master. Apparently, many of the puzzles we encountered were BONUS puzzles. This is a "smart" room. It monitors your progress through the main storyline, and ADAPTS and provides extra tasks if you are moving quickly through the puzzles. If your team struggles or uses a lot of time on certain tasks, the cabinets and doors that open when you complete your current task skip you ahead so you can have a better chance of experiencing the entire room without messing up the plot or story. The room actually adds on extra plot details and tasks that need to be solved if your team blows through the basic storyline because the goal is to give every group the full one-hour experience which ends up being tailored to your skill level. We managed to do the entire room and all the bonus puzzles but still finished with a few minutes to spare, so if we were novice escapers might not have been able to enjoy the whole thing, It truly is INCREDIBLE, and if we lived in Boston, we'd do every single room that this company has to offer and maybe even do Storyteller's Secret again - it was that amazing! read more

Super fun! My boyfriend and I went here for the Storyteller's secret and we had a blast! Boxaroo is super unique from the other escape rooms I've tried. You can tell they spend a lot of time developing these games! If you're looking for a fun experience with a friend or a group of friends I would recommend this place. TL;DR: Seasoned escapee, can't recommend them enough My partner and I love escape rooms, and have enjoyed a couple dozen in several major cities. We've really loved some, and were really meh on a couple. We recently went on a double date and did our first Boxaroo room; it was a secret room they weren't advertising on their website called Storyteller's Secret. It was hands down one of the best escape rooms we've done. We and our two friends had a fantastic time. Their puzzles were satisfying and cleverly designed, the room was pretty and soothing, and the overall experience was excellent. The staff were super nice and talked to us at length after we were done (we were the last booking of the evening). The management seems like genuinely nice people who love what they do. The thing that makes them stand out most is that they're really committed to wholesome, enjoyable, and generally lighthearted rooms. My partner and I can be really type A, and love challenging rooms with time pressure, or scary rooms that get our hearts racing. That is NOT what Boxaroo is going for. However, we really fell in love with the relaxing family-friendly experience they designed in Storyteller's Secret. Loved the room and puzzles. Loved the management. This was my sixth escape room (and the third in Boston), and I can say that it was my favorite of all my experiences so far. Two of my friends and I participated in the Conundrum Museum experience, which is designed for four people but was possible with three (I think it's actually impossible for a party of two and would probably require the gamemaster to step in to help for a particular portion of the room). We went during a weekday afternoon, so we were the only ones in the room, which was nice because we were able to experiene every single puzzle. The design of the space was fantastic - each "exhibit" was carefully crafted to be a puzzle while at the same time not overtly abandoning its design as a piece of art. Overally, the integration of the art with the puzzles was seamless! More than anything, huge shout out to our tour guide (Camile? I think?) who did some great, hilarious acting in the beginning to have us dive into the story. At the beginning, she mentioned that it was her "first day" as a tour guide and my friend really believed her and was about to say "oh that's okay, you're doing a great job." Anyway, the museum was loads of fun and we managed to finish with under 5 minutes left. My ONLY gripe would be that there is no actual timer - only a bar with a color gradient and it is really difficult to tell how much time is left. But at the same time, it helps take the pressure off of finishing and focus on just enjoying the moment, so I guess I can't complain too much. I definitely want to be back to try out the other two puzzles they have going! read more
