We went on a Saturday at 3 to solve the Mystery of the Magician's Study. We are new to escape rooms, having only visited one ever, at Canobie Lake Park. That one is probably considered simpler than the ones at Boxaroo, and we did manage to solve it (with a couple of hints) whereas here we were all horribly excited and failed to coordinate our efforts at all. So of course we failed to solve it, but still had a great time. It was a little bit scary for our eight-year-old, who needed to hold my hand at times, but not too scary for her to continue. The light in any escape room, I think, is low, which makes it spooky (yay!) but also harder for older people to read small text. Our guide, who was unfailingly helpful and polite, showed up with flashlights when he noticed that I was having trouble with that. Afterward, everyone, including my eight-year-old, rated it 10 out of 10 for a family outing. If it were more affordable, I think our family would enjoy doing this, say, once a month, but as it is, we would probably reserve it for special occasions. This place is lit! One of the only escape rooms where you can book with just two people. I went here for a date and had a blast. The room was quality, and really interactive. The Magician's Study is challenging but fun, and the hosts were great!

I came in with my family (we were a party of 4) and we did the Story Teller's secret. We had a fantastic time! This was our third escape room and it was fun and challenging. The structure was a little different than the other rooms we'd tried but it made the experience unique and more interactive! The staff member was friendly and professional and the facility was clean. First experience doing an Escape the Room ordeal and it was fun, thrilling, and a little spooky! I got there on a Saturday afternoon and the place was easy to find. The only minor hassle was they seem to keep the front door locked on the weekends, so I had to call the number listed on the door and a staff member promptly answered my call and came upstairs to let me in. It's in a lower level/basement, very quiet. The staff members there are really nice and enthused about the mystery you have to solve and re-assure you before starting that they are monitoring you the whole time so it is safe. I was in a group of around 6 people and we solved the Magician's Study mystery in ~50 minutes! There were a few moments where my heart jumped a little when voiceover hints or the background music started to creep me out, but mystery is the ambiance of the setting. I liked how they broke down everything afterwards and answered all of our questions! read more

We did the Magicians Study and it was one of the better escape rooms we've done. The difficulty level was good; the puzzles were hard enough that you felt good when solving them, but never so difficult or unfair that you felt stuck for too long. Clever puzzles with none of the 'throw-away' puzzles that just involve completing a task without the satisfaction of engaging your brain to solve something. Their concept for how all the puzzles come together at the end is brilliant. The technical execution is flawless, and the artistry/design is really beautiful- like an actual art gallery. Go! My husband and I did the Storyteller's Secret and we wish we could give Boxaroo a 6-star rating!!! Hands down the BEST escape room we've ever done (we've done ~5). The cohesiveness of the escape room made the experience SO fun and magical -- from the story plotline, to the actual design of the space, to the music being played, to the puzzles. It was also the most technologically advanced escape room set up in terms of usage of digital displays and projections. The gal who was working there was also really nice and did an excellent job getting us into the adventuring mood. We can't wait to go back to Boxaroo for another adventure! read more

Waiting room was beautiful, so was the escape room (I did the The Storyteller's Secret). Let me get so much water and were so kind and patient. person who let us in was super patient, let me use the bathroom despite arriving sharp at the start time. New guy who monitored our escape gave us extra time, like 10 minutes. Was super patient, let us finish the last level 3 (of the storytellers secret room) which was just so so thoughtful. Rounding up to 5-stars because the Magician's Study, which I did a few years back was my first and best escape room so far (I've done about 7). Their current puzzle, Museum Conundrum, was totally fun and one of the better ones, but not quite as good as the Magician's Study. The current room, Museum Conundrum, is for 4-10 people and if any of the participants have escape room experience or are especially good at puzzles, I'd recommend doing 4-5 people for maximum fun / challenge. We had 7 people (mix of newbies and experienced) and managed to finish about 15 minutes early, which apparently is about average. Set design and story was great, as I've come to expect from Boxaroo. And there were a few kinds of puzzles I hadn't seen before. I would definitely recommend! My only (minor) complaint is that the "timer" was not user-friendly, as it has no numbers (just light differentiation) and is blocked from view in 90% of the puzzle space. read more

However the absolute best one is Storytellers Secret, what an amazing work of art. Everything is absolutely beautifully done. My wife and I are big fans of escape rooms and recently did 'The Storyteller's Secret' at Boxaroo. There's not much I can say here that hasn't been said by other reviewers, we simply had an incredible time and in some ways feel we might have been ruined for other escape rooms. The people at Boxaroo clearly put a lot of thought and care into the creation of this room. It is more of an "experience" than a traditional escape room. A few of the puzzles seemed intimidating at first glance but weren't too bad once we got our feet off the ground. The puzzles build on themselves in a clever way, increasing in difficulty as you go. Newbies might have a tough time with some parts but overall the room shouldn't be too challenging for escape room veterans. The two of us managed to complete the story with a bit of help from the game's clever hint system. I recommend using a hint or two if you get stuck as you will definitely want to complete this room and, unlike most rooms I've done, this one doesn't tell you how much time you have left! You are given 75 minutes to finish and we ended up competing it with under five minutes to spare (I was shocked we cut it so close I thought we had a lot more time)! I recommend doing this room with only 2 or 3 people, any more and you will have bottlenecks where some people are milling around with nothing to do. If you're from out of town, parking in this area can be tricky and the the business is not so easy to spot while driving by, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to find the place. The good news is there's plenty to see and do nearby (including another really good escape room that is a 15 min walk away). So, if you're ever in Boston with a friend or two you should absolutely include The Storyteller's Secret' in your plans! read more

So many great twists and puzzles. 3 of the 5 members of our group had never done an escape room before and we finished in 72 minutes (75 is the limit!). Was an interesting beginning...in an office building of sorts. That being said entrance an old bank vault. Level of detail building out clues, adventure and challenge impressive. We beat the buzzer by 4 minutes and solved the challenge. Would do again with them, great fun! read more

We played The Storytellers Secret this time but have also done the other two currently available games. All of the games have been very immersive. Both the puzzles and the engineering/mechanics were really awesome. Definitely suggest to everyone from beginners to experienced escape roomers. read more

The Magician's Study and the Conundrum Museum are both excellent games for the Boston area. I just played Boxaroo's third and newest game, The Storyteller's Secret and it blows the other 2 out of the water. The story is intricate, the sets are beautiful, the puzzles are fun and challenging, and the whole experience was delightful overall. It compares very favorably with the other 300+ games that I've played in the last few years. read more

My friend and I did the Storyteller room and I can say that it was the best escape room I've ever done. Challenging without being obtuse, the designers did a great job constructing this room. I was really impressed by the technical aspects of the room, and they went a long way to making the room feel immersive and put you in the story. I've done probably 8-10 other escape rooms and Boxaroo's room is at the top of my list, I'll definitely be back to do more of the rooms when I return to Boston. read more

One of our party members was running late and I was concerned that we would have to start without them, but the employees let us postpone the start The puzzles were fair yet challenging. This was my first experience with an Escape Room of any kind and wow...they've set the bar pretty high! I had no clue what to expect and went with a friend and were joined by a group of 3 other strangers. We got a quick introduction, were given small flight lights and off we went. We scattered throughout the room looking for clue and solved them little by little. The game admins would sometimes supply little written clues on paper if they could see we were getting stumped. One thing led to the next and before you know it -- the hour has flown by. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fun afternoon activity in the city. Conveniently located in the basement of a building right above the Government Center T stop. They have bathrooms, coat racks and friendly, helpful staff. And of course they take your group photo at the end! read more
