I've done 5 escape rooms in Boston and 50+ in the US and Europe, and this one was my favorite out of all of the ones in Boston. The highlights of the room were the technology that controls all aspects of the game. The technology is hidden really well, so a lot of the events that will trigger just feel like pure "magic". There are quite a few fun surprises as well. The puzzles in this room are much better themed than the ones in the other escape rooms in Boston. The puzzles at Boxaroo were part of the room decor itself and were themed somewhat well, instead of just being standalone paper puzzles. Highly recommended! read more

This was my first experience with an Escape Room of any kind and wow...they've set the bar pretty high! I had no clue what to expect and went with a friend and were joined by a group of 3 other strangers. We got a quick introduction, were given small flight lights and off we went. We scattered throughout the room looking for clue and solved them little by little. The game admins would sometimes supply little written clues on paper if they could see we were getting stumped. One thing led to the next and before you know it -- the hour has flown by. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fun afternoon activity in the city. Conveniently located in the basement of a building right above the Government Center T stop. They have bathrooms, coat racks and friendly, helpful staff. And of course they take your group photo at the end! read more

This is a FANTASTIC escape the room. Easily one of the best I've ever experienced. TL;DR: Thematically cohesive and beautifully decorated. Puzzles are super diverse. Excellent location. So much fun! One of the main things you'll notice is the amazing attention to detail and the fantastical effects of the room itself. You'll really feel like you're in a magician's lair. The excellent use of props, sound, and lights make for a engrossing experience, nevermind the puzzles. The puzzles are also incredibly clever, with a whole range of difficulties, well suited for people of all skill levels. They are also mechanically very different from each other, so you aren't even using the same part of your brain throughout the room! I personally came with a group of 9 people, which felt like just enough, but they recommend a group of 5-9 for the optimal experience. The location itself is very unique: it is in one of the original sites of the Federal Reserve, with a huge bank vault door in front! The staff is friendly and helpful, who definitely make the experience more comfortable and inviting. If you're a fan of any escape the rooms, you'll enjoy this place. You may even want to stay longer to see all the details. I definitely did! read more

What a great experience! Staff was enthusiastic and awesome! Highly recommend this place. You will not be disappointed!

Great room. My friends and I have done around 10 escape rooms together, so while we're not nearly as seasoned as some of the more hardcore folks, we've figured out some "common" tricks used in escape rooms, and that's made it harder to enjoy the ones more geared toward beginners -- This room was specifically designed to provide unique puzzles for all, beginners and experienced players alike, so we were definitely kept on our toes the whole time. Very cool atmosphere. The staff clearly want the players to have a good time, and Alec was really nice and patient. The overarching storyline was a little hard to follow but fun nonetheless. And they keep some pretty impressive statistics on their puzzles! read more

I played both rooms on my visit to Boston. These were the 100th and 101st rooms I've done in the northeast region. These rooms were excellently crafted, and the company as a whole is amongst the best I've ever seen. While not the most high-tech of companies, they've implemented some puzzles I haven't seen anywhere else, which is hard to do. All puzzles were logical, reasonable, and fair with a clear progression. If you get stuck, there are pre-recorded clues available. I say available because they way this company implemented them is brilliant. You hear an audio cue allowing you to press a button to hear the clue. Don't want the hint? Don't hit the button. Very simple. It's those little touches that separate this company from the rest. After you're done they give you a complete walkthrough from beginning to end, while also answering any questions. Many companies will rush you out the door as soon as you finish. It doesn't stop there. After you're out the door, they have you fill out a questionnaire asking for recommendations and complaints. A company that is continually trying to improve is one that deserves respect and loyalty. Lastly, unique to this company, is a report card of your performance broken down by puzzle, and charted against the average and the fastest time. How many clues did you take? It's listed. How slow did you start? You can see it all. Absolutely brilliant. Boxaroo is opening a third room next year and it is one of the first things I plan to do the next time I'm in Boston. read more

I've been to about a half dozen escape rooms, and this was by far the best one I've done. Everything about the room is really well thought out, and all the little details like the design and the music really create a magical experience. The puzzles have unique approaches while having thematically similar style, which really adds to the feeling of being inside a magician's layer. Finally, the puzzles themselves were awesome, and (without spoiling anything), I'll just say that one of the mechanics is one of the coolest I've seen. Definitely would recommend! read more

The Vault: This experience was fantastic. The room was super neat and just such a great location - both where it is in the city and that it is an old vault - both very good. The decor, lighting, system for getting clues, and some of the clues themselves were very neat. This was the first time my mom and dad had joined us in an escape room, so there was a bit of explaining to them the purpose, but we got along well enough when we understood how to do a puzzle. Things really deteriorated when we got to the last puzzle, though, because we simply skipped an earlier one that really was needed here and none of us thought to go back to it. Also, we might have over-complicated it even with that puzzle done. Either way, it was fun and I'm glad we got to experience together. Theme:This theme really held up to expectations - it was in a real old bank vault, which was just really neat. Quality:Everything worked very well, once we figured out what we were supposed to do with things. Difficulty:There were definitely some harder things in here, but we also made it harder by skipping a puzzle and then missing clues that were given to us. Fun:We still had a good time even though we lost. read more

Truly a 2nd gen full experience escape room. Worth every penny of the $28 ticket price. Immersive theme and engaging puzzles, all meticulously designed for a fun-filled hour of dynamic team building. Located inside an old massive bank vault in the underbelly of downtown Boston, this room transported us to a mysterious lair of a magical world. If you're a fan of escape rooms, puzzles and have a general desire for fun with your peers, I highly recommend this room. read more

Amazing family experience. Went with my parents and 13 year old sister and the whole family had a blast.

Overall this is a good room and creative ideas, but they had some technical problem in the room that the game master had to come twice and activate it manually. We have a lot of experience with escape rooms and we know that this can happen, but the way that they treated us was a bad experience. First they tried to cover for the technical issues till they didn't have a choice and admitted in the problems. After we tried to explain that our experience was bad because of it, they ignored us multiple times, although we explained that we want to give feedbacks for them to improve for other people. The manager (Robert) didn't return to our calls and emails, and after many attempts he called back and promised that he will check and compensate but we have never heard from him. We were disappointed as the room has a lot of potential, but service is also important and treating well your customers. read more

The puzzles are just the right level of difficulty and there's always enough for everyone to do! And the production quality of everything some of the best I've seen- would recommend! read more

An excellent escape the room experience, in terms of content, design, and customer experience! Content: if you have done an escape the room before and liked the puzzles, you will definitely like the puzzles here too! Having done a few before in the states and in Shanghai, I thought that they did a good job of connecting the different puzzles and parts of the room together. Design: check out their neat website! It will give you a glimpse into the quality and freshness of the design and presentation in the room. The placement and selection of furniture and decorations very well fit the magician's study setting. I particularly appreciated that Boxaroo was attentive to even the little things, such as the signs you take pictures with and how they tell you about your performance relative to other teams. Customer experience: just a little bonus. I emailed Boxaroo very late at night and received a response 3 minutes later, resolving a request I had made. read more

Equal parts challenging and fun, my group had a great time.

Staff was super friendly and accomodating! I did the Storyteller's Secret room, which was very challenging but had really helpful hints. It was immersive and visually appealing, without sacrificing fun and complexity. My friends and I had such a good time and were able to solve the secret! read more

It's a great place to enjoy and a fun for all ages. The staff is very helpful and fun to interact with. Highly recommended.

Best escape room we've been to! (And we've been to about 12 across the us) We did the "magicians study" - the puzzles were just hard enough and the person giving us hints did an excellent job of helping a little but not too much - we highly recommend this escape room!! read more

Wow. What an experience. I've done a few escape rooms before, and Boxaroo is by far the most intricate, yet engaging, and well-thought-out. It really felt like I was in a different dimension/world. The storyline was also very interesting and original. Friendly staff, too. Highly recommended! read more

We did a bachelorette party here and it was so much fun. We all had a blast. It was museum based and the puzzles were challenging, but not to the point of being unsolvable. We were given multiple clues to get us closer to solving each puzzle. I've heard of some that only give a certain amount, but they really do want to help and get you solve the puzzles, especially if they are challenging. I would recommend them again and again. I hope to take my in-laws and family here soon. read more

Our group of 4 had a great experience at Boxaroo (we did the Conundrum Museum). I was super impressed by the great facilities and the elaborate, challenging and fun puzzles. Best escape room I have ever done! Staff is great. Cannot recommend this place enough

NOT the Same Old Story: "The Storyteller's Secret" is a Fairy Tale Come True Hello, Yelpers! This is Christian Krenek, Dauphin D'Escape Rooms. This was the big one for me--my 30th room (and, I'm happy to say, 24th win!). I'd heard high praise for "Storyteller's Secret", so four of my friends and I got together and headed over on a Saturday morning. I'd done the Magician's Study last year and loved the puzzles and props, so I had high hopes. And they weren't met. They were BLOWN AWAY. The Storyteller's Secret is, hands down, THE best escape room I have played in Boston, and possibly ever (only New York City's Clue Chase and Boston's own Trapology come close). From the moment we entered the room--a small, cozy hallway literally scented with pine (they pipe it in!), we felt like we were hidden away in a writer's retreat. And then we began delving into the writer's imagination...and I do mean that quite literally. I don't want to give too much away, but suffice to say that you end up seeing some amazing things as you explore Emily's world. The sheer scope of the design alone is enough to catapult this room to the top of the list. Of course, what people like best about escape rooms is puzzles...and boy oh boy, does this deliver. In addition to some truly original and innovative enigmas around the room, the Storyteller's Secret repeatedly challenges players to reexamine what they find. There's always more to discover as you go, and things you thought you mastered earlier turn out to have extra and unexpected dimensions. That the team was able to build so many astoundingly intricate puzzles and nest them inside each other is nothing short of a miracle! Each of us contributed to the team's discoveries and had an "aha!" moment, but the room flowed naturally enough that it was easy to explain what we'd done and not feel left out. That is always appreciated! Speaking of which, a special shout-out must be given to the incredible Brie Frame, who was lead designer on the project. I know Brie through the Boston puzzle community, and she is amazing--this room is proof of that. We had a great win time, so Brie gave us a personalized tech tour of the room, and made us laugh as she explained every detail. Ask for Brie when you play! I cannot recommend "The Storyteller's Secret" enough. It is truly a giant leap forward in what escape rooms can be. Brie and the whole Boxaroo team should be incredibly proud of creating entire magical worlds inside Boston. If you need to get away from reality and see wonders, go learn The Storyteller's Secret as soon as you can! read more

An excellent escape room, good variety of puzzles, and great props. It's good both for old hands and for people who have never done escape rooms before (we had both). Staff was excellent, as well! read more

It was very challenging, without being so difficult that it was impossible to decipher. We had a great time!

This is the literal best escape room place I've ever been to. The designs are gorgeous, fun and challenging. Highly recommend!

Update, August 2019: My husband and I returned to Boxaroo to try their newest room, the Storyteller's Secret. It is not widely advertised to the public, but fellow enthusiasts recommended it on our Facebook group and raved about it. We were pleased to see that all bookings are private and that the experience is designed for smaller groups (2-5) because often we find it is the opposite. We cannot possibly say enough positive things about this room. It is a must-do for anyone - newbies and escape enthusiasts alike. It shot to the top of both of our lists of over 40 games completed. The execution of the room is flawless, with many novel features (no pun intended). It was a highly active room, which is always much more satisfying than just standing there solving a puzzle printed on paper. I won't say too much for fear of spoiling this wonderful experience, all I will say is that it one of the most immersive, unique, and well executed rooms we have ever seen. The puzzles were engaging but not frustratingly complex and integrated seamlessly into the overall theme and story. I can't imagine a group not having a wonderful time in this room. Don't hesitate to check it out today! The staff and the owner are incredibly welcoming and obviously very passionate about what they do. We will be back soon with reinforcements to finish the final room here and will update this review with more details. read more

I had so much fun! Boxaroo is one of the very best escape room companies in Boston, if not the world. The experience was immersive, the puzzles were clever, and the staff was entertaining. Without a doubt, you and your friends will leave smiling and excitedly chatting about everyone's favorite "Eureka!" moments. read more

This was great. I went with a large group--8 people--and there was enough for everyone to do. The puzzles feel really good to solve, and the clues are helpfully given to you when necessary, without feeling patronizing. The room lacks the urgency of an actual escape-the-room where you're "escaping a bomb" or what have you, BUT all the effects are so fun and satisfying that it still feels really immersive and enjoyable. It's well designed--a delight to hang out in the room and discover all the bits and pieces of production design around you. Can't recommend enough! read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at boxaroo. I have done over 15 escape rooms in the past year or so and I would say this is one of the most well done I've ever seen. The puzzles were challenging without being impossible to figure out and the puzzles were extremely creative. I cannot wait to go back! read more

My fiance and I are avid escape room enthusiasts. However, as amazing and interactive this place is, the experience was not worth it as we walked away feeling annoyed and disappointed. We wasted at least the first 5 minutes looking for anything to jumpstart us. Finally, the host came in a realized that the last group had done something to the first clue that made it impossible for us to find so she brought in a new one. Once we had that, we were on our way. But, when we got really stuck, we would ask for help, but there would be no response. So I yelled "hello!?" The host came back in and asked us if we needed anything... and we just said, oh we just need a hint. And then she asked us what we already have done... which made us think are you not monitoring us? Which explains why whenever we asked for hints, we never got them. Then, we got the hint. We were on another roll and then we got to a lock that got stuck and wouldn't reset. Again, we waited for someone to come in as we were yelling the lock is stuck. She came in and fixed it, and then apologized for earlier because something happened in a different room. Finally, in the last leg of it all, something broke and when we yelled for it, the host came in and said we ran out of time. They never stopped the clock for us when they had to give us the first clue and fix the lock that got stuck. Then she told us that the last thing that broke would have still worked broken, which we understood why after she explained it to us but anyone would have stopped and waited to get it fixed because when something literally broke into 2 pieces, you would think you can't do anything else. Like we said... the room is incredible but the experience was awful and was not worth the $60. If this was not the case, we definitely would be coming back to try the other rooms. read more

Having done a lot of puzzle rooms in the area, Boxaroo shines when it comes to theme and set design. I am always impressed with the attention to detail so that you truly feel immersed in the world of the puzzle. The puzzles themselves are always delightfully tied into the over all theme or story. I am an experienced puzzle room goer but not an experienced puzzler and I feel that the level of difficulty is appropriate and fun. read more

I did a test run of this with a group of 6 friends, it was a lot of fun! The puzzles were very clever and didn't rely heavily on combination locks, like a lot of the other escape the rooms in town. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who hasn't done an escape the room before, as well as to any escape veterans. read more
