If you fail a room, you can jump right back in and try again as long as no other groups are waiting to enter. It did get pretty hot inside while running around, so be prepared to sweat a little. We could see that the AC was set on 69 but the temperature was 78 so the AC may have been having issues. They also had some industrial fans to help cool it down. They provide free lockers but you can't bring a water bottle with you in the quest area. This was an awesome group activity that requires problem-solving, teamwork, and physical activity. Oh Boda Borg, how do I love thee? I love thee enough to be pushing my old and infirm body extremely past the limit every time I go such that I'm bruised, cut up, head sore, and triumphant every visit. I had the pleasure of going before the Borg opened to the public in a Yelp Elite event, so no other trip can really compare to that first time. But even as the rooms get a little more run down and the crowds of teens get a little rowdier, it's still just a predictably great time even for old folks like moi. I wish they had water fountains and first aid stations everywhere, but that is really my only complaint. There are tons of rooms and they turn over often enough that you'll have something new to try on your next visit. Parking is easy, they have weird and delicious snacks for sale, and the staff are great. It's easy to reserve your spot but you can also make last minute adjustments easily. This was a very entertaining activity for all ages! We did this activity on a weekday, and I believe there was a field trip; thus, there were so many kids running around. At first, I thought the place was only kid-friendly; however, those puzzles were hard! This was very entertaining due to its versatility, encompassing puzzles, escape rooms, and physical activities. There are so many rooms, and they are designated by difficulty. The facilities were very clean. Boda Bord definitely tired me out, but it was a very fun and wholesome activity. Boda Borg Is a great place to bring friends or co-workers if you want to work on team building. There is ample street parking and a small parking lot across from the building. You can bring groups of three to five people to a room. This place takes the idea of escape rooms and puts it on steroids. The escape rooms here are called "Quests" and each consists of between 2-4 rooms that you must completely beat in one go or else you have to start all over again. The rooms will require problem solving, good team work, and good observation skills to beat. There are 21 quests to complete and it will take multiple visits and many failed attempts in order to complete them. However, if you do complete the quest, the last room will unlock a stamp that you put on your card to prove that you beat it. If you end up beating all the quests you may end up on their wall of fame. If you get stuck on a puzzle you can ask a crew member for help for which they call a "nudge," but obviously it's only a small clue and they try not to give the solution away which would ruin the fun. For a first-time participants, you will be required to sign a waiver and then watch a 5-minute tutorial video. You will then get a locker where you can store your belongings away. There's an upstairs and downstairs, with the majority of the best rooms being downstairs. My favorite quests are Cardboard Temple, Alcatraz, Spook House, Potions, and Platoon. For tickets, you can reserve online and see what time slots are available or you can also buy tickets in person, but risk a time slot being full if it's too busy. The tickets are for 2 hour ($28) or 4 hours ($40) and you get a bracelet as your key to entry. The puzzles here are marked by color to designate if it's a mental or physical challenge. Of note, by the end of the day, my friends and I had bruises all over our legs from crawling into small tunnels and spaces and running into things. If you get hungry, they do have snacks and drinks available that are reasonably priced. read more

There are about 2-3 rooms/levels you need to complete for each challenge. Since we came in the morning during a holiday, there were mainly kids doing the puzzles. Perfect group activity! I've been scouting for fun stuff to do in the winter other than skiing, museums or bars, and landed on Boda Borg. I've done escape rooms only once before and had a meh experience (probably because we didn't actually ... escape the room) so came here with some mild trepidation but it turned out to be so much fun. I will say it's probably 1000x more fun as a kid, as demonstrated by the hordes of tweens and teens on a Sunday morning. So, in a nutshell, Boda Borg is made up of multiple kinds of "quests" comprised of two or three rooms in each quest. If you succeed, you move on to the next room, and if you fail (which you'll do a lot), you have to go back and try again. You can try a room as many times as possible. Each time you make it all the way through one quest, you get to stamp your card as a badge of honor. There are three levels: green (lots of mental, minimal physical challenge); red (equal mix of both); and black (mostly physical). Make sure to wear comfy shoes and clothes, because several rooms definitely required crawling, shimmying, hauling yourself on handles along the edge. (Side note: the surfaces seemed the stuff of a germaphobe's nightmare, with so many kids running amok. I had to give my hands a good scrubbing immediately afterwards.) At the beginning, I thought as thirty-somethings with a reasonable level of fitness, we'd have a bit of a leg-up. Well, pride comes before the fall. Although the intro video warned us of a pretty high failure rate (I think the average group fails each room 10x before cracking it), the first, second, and third times that the alarm rang letting us know we had utterly failed in less than a minute were pretty jarring. (Side note #2: You can ask the employees in the halls for a clue. They obviously can't give too much away but the nudge we got for Awesome was helpful.) My favorites: Spycatcher, Sphinx, Potions, You're Awesome. There were a bunch of others we didn't get to try. Sunday morning was definitely busy and we spent a good chunk of time just waiting for the group in front of us to finish. I recommend a weekday afternoon/evening so you can have more of the place to yourself. Parking: Right across the entrance on Pleasant Street is a public parking lot. Lots of street parking too. Parking is free on Sundays. Great location in downtown Malden, with lots of restaurants around. We grabbed a bite at Mystic Station afterwards. read more

I came here last week with colleagues. None of us were really sure what to expect based on the web site (except for the one colleague who had come once before). It was a Tuesday, and things were really quiet at the venue. Once we found the correct door to enter, we checked in and watched the explanatory video. Note: As the video tells you, the colors match to a PHYSICAL intensity level, not a DIFFICULTY level. All I'll say about that is that if you choose an activity with a black door, you should be prepared to army crawl or do monkey bars or something like that. There are all sorts of different rooms with puzzles. I won't spoil any of them here, but the interesting thing is that you have to go into each room and figure out how to win it. Some of them are fairly easy, but there were two rooms that we could never figure out. We kept messing something up and the red light would come on, notifying us that we had failed the room, so we eventually gave up and moved on LOL. My favorite one was probably the Lava room. It's a fun place! I think this was a nice team building activity, and you can really spend hours here if you are trying a lot of different rooms. Because there were so few people there, we only had to wait on people to leave a room once or twice before we went in. I'd go back and try to figure out those rooms that we couldn't get! read more

WOW! Boda Borg truly is an out-of-this-world experience. It's much more than just a typical escape room or brain teaser challenge. Each room is uniquely themed and intricately planned with different activities, and the programming resets after each time, so when we tried our favorite rooms multiple times, we still got a different experience. The rooms are a mix of mental and physical challenges, and the more physically demanding rooms are identified by red or black paint on the doors. Some of those rooms were very tight (especially with 4 people competing on the same obstacle at once), so it might not be the best option for claustrophobic people. Boda Borg truly is an amazing place, and I wish I could reveal some details about the rooms, but I don't want to give any spoilers for people who haven't been yet! I paid for a 2-hour session, but I wish I had more time--I'm already researching how I can open a Boda Borg franchise in my hometown! read more

Had so much fun! Took the advice of other reviewers and got the 4 hour pass and glad I did. Went with a group of 12 total for my birthday and it was great! The booking folks were excellent communicators. The staff were welcoming, responsive, and flexible. The whole thing is very smoothly run. Parking nearby. Free lockers to store gear. Easy to go to the rest room, grab water, or go to locker whenever you need to. Rooms were really challenging and really fun, loves swapping group members around when we would get stuck on a room to get a fresh perspective. Fun group friendly activity! Groups of 3-5 are welcomed so not really a date night activity unless you do a double date. Reservations can be made online or over the phone. HIGHLY recommend reservations. We called 5 hours before and we're able to get the last spots of the evening. DONT BE LATE, you pay for the time slot so if you're late you spend less time. Time slot cost: $28/ person for 2 hours or $40/person for 4 hours. If it's your first time I recommend the 4 hours just because we wishes we would've had a little more time when we only did 2. Wow! What an incredibly unique experience that I had no idea what I was walking into! Apparently this is Europe's take on escape rooms but with a little twist and is currently the only location in the US! This place is packed with rooms upon rooms of puzzles that make you think and can have 2-3 levels/other rooms you have to unlock in order to finish the level and receive a stamp. It's tricky though because you have no rules and a shorter time limit and have to piece things together yourself! If you do something wrong, you'll immediately be kicked out and will have to leave the room to try it again! It's so much fun, though, I promise you'll never be boda bored! Would recommend anyone that is visiting the Boston area to put this as a hidden gem you must visit!! I love this place, it is always a fun and challenging time. You can choose to do either 2 hours or 4 hours. The 2 hours is a decent amount of time to try all the rooms at least once. Every room is so difficult with a series of two- four rooms. They range from mental to physical and I would recommend workout clothes. Each time we go back it's hard trying to figure out how you got through rooms you did the previous time. It never gets old and it such a good time for everyone. We had a group of 5 but if we had one more person we would have split up into groups of 3. You need at least 3 people for each room. read more

We've been here twice in the past month now even though it's over an hour away because we just HAD to have more time to retry some of the rooms. At the beginning it was a bit overwhelming. There's a lot of rooms and often you leave one wondering what the heck you did wrong. After a while though we hit our groove and started making progress. We were with some friends who had been before so they remembered some rooms and helped guide us. Even so we only got 4 or so stamps the whole 4/5 hours we were there! Our next visit we were more prepared and knew what to expect so got more than double the number of stamps. I liked the color coding system that indicated if a room was more physical, mental or a combination. It was great to be able to mix it up and know a little bit what you were getting into. It was also fun that several quests could be solved in different ways. I heard before covid restrictions they had an unlimited time pass but for now it's either two hours or four hours. I strongly recommend doing the four hours. You definitely won't run out of things to do and we would've left with basically nothing to show for our efforts at 2 hours. It does get busier as the day goes on and more parties enter so we opted for morning spots so we'd have a quiet start with no lines. Even by the early afternoon though you never have to wait too long to get into a room. I fully expect us to be back to try to tackle the rooms we still haven't cracked. read more

My friends organized a birthday get together which was perfect for my group of 8. We split into 4s which was ideal for the room sizes and tasks. There were a plethora of escape rooms with barely any direction of what to do when. It was an exercise for the brain and body requiring running around, touching random items, and thinking outside of the box. Since it was for my birthday, I'm not sure of the price but I know you can pay based on how long you want to play for. We stayed for 2 hours but could have easily stayed for 3 hours. It's a quite challenging experience if you're into escape room puzzles. There are different rooms that provide 3 stages that you have one try to solve each time. The place is quite a maze itself to try all the rooms but I def recommend 2 hrs to give them all a try. I wasn't too thrilled when I found out the family was going to an "escape the room" type place -- but my wrong opinions definitely changed when we did our first quest! Instead of having only one theme room with a timer, there are multiple rooms with different themes and level of physical activity. Highly recommend wearing stretchy pants/workout clothes and sneakers as some rooms require a bit of movement. As my family was new to the place, they had someone give us an intro of how the rooms worked and explained what the symbols meant. Side note: love seeing the employees work - their communication skills are great! Each quest had its own set of challenges, and you're meant to fail multiple times. They don't tell you why you failed (wrong answer, ran out of time, etc.) so you gotta figure it out with your teammates. The recommended group size is 3-5 ppl. It's totally fine to do more (my group had 6), but if possible I think the ideal number is 3. Each quest is set up to only require 3 people to complete a task, so if you have more people you'd end up with the remaining teammates not doing anything. SO MUCH FUN. I wish there were more Boda Borg locations around the US! Boda Borg houses around 20 or so escape-room-like mini games called "quests", each of which have 2-3 levels that you and your team will need to work together to beat. With a group of 3-5 people, you enter a room with no instructions (other than knowing the general theme), and your goal is figure out how to escape/finish each level without any mistakes. Once you successfully beat the entire quest, you can stamp your scorecard as proof and move onto another challenge. But trust me...it's a lot harder than it sounds!! Aside from how creative and challenging some of these quests were, what impressed me the most is that everything, including game play, is electronically controlled. Each room has a screen in it - if you pass, you will see a green icon pop up indicating you can move on. If you trigger something and fail, a red icon will appear to indicate you need to exit the room and start from the beginning again. EVERYONE fails, so don't feel discouraged the first few times around! I've been here twice several years ago and came back recently for my third time, and I'm so happy that they've introduced some new rooms to change it up. Can't wait to come back. Perfect way to entertain the teens and tweens for a few hours. Love the escape room style experiences that range from puzzles to physical play. With over 20 rooms to conquer and new rooms being added we look forward to every trip. My only feedback is that they would benefit from more supervision for the groups of kids roaming the halls. We heard very inappropriate language and observed groups of kids negatively interacting with each other. Staff was extremely responsive when we let them know. I visited Boda Borg with a bunch of smart athletic nerds and they really enjoyed the challenge. Each door has a color on it signifying the physical (not mental) challenge level. Red is for low physical intensity, green is for medium physical intensity and black is for high physical intensity. All the quests are mentally engaging. I'd recommend coming here with a party sized in increments of 3 (e.g., 3, 6, 9, etc.). Their website is easy to use for booking reservations but you can also book over the phone. HOLY MOLY this place was INCREDIBLY FUN. I wish there was a way for me to give MORE than 5 stars. My friends and I all dropped in on a Saturday morning - the place was pretty mellow around 11AM. Come 1PM, people were swarming in, lines got longer, etc. However, the wait times weren't that bad, and hey, you could use the time to think about your next gameplan if you were retrying a room. Overall, we had an amazing time. If it's your first time, you'll have a quick introduction/FAQ session with a staff member. The deets are pretty straightforward: black rooms require high physical exertion, red rooms had a moderate amount of physical exertion, and green didn't require any physical exertion. And NO, just because the room isn't black, or red, doesn't mean that it's EASY. I found that some of the green rooms were the hardest and usually required a bit of mental thought to "escape." I'd have to say though that most of the black/red rooms were clearly a favorite (Alcatraz, Jungle, Farm, Rats were the most memorable). Yes - You'll be seeing me back again. Yes - You will be the most sore immediately after the games. Yes - You will get bruises. Yes - There is food. Yes - You can leave and come back the same day (must have your wristband in place). I've been to Boda now maybe 5 times. Each time is as fun as the last. Even rooms I've previously solved are tough to solve again, because I forget exactly how my team solved some of it. Participating with different groups of people is important, because certain combinations work better than others. The last time I went, I was with two of my lady best friends and we absolutely rocked at it, and got 6 stamps. We all had skills and approaches that complimented each other, and never got frustrated with one another. A group of three is the sweet spot. More people can just get in the way. I want to try going during a weekday, since weekends definitely get crowded, which means more of a wait for the rooms, especially the poplar ones. read more

Very poor customer service. Apparently groups of two are not able to attend despite the website saying in bold that there are no size limitations for groups. Also no one bothers to answer the phone when you call to find out if it's ok for two people to attend. You have to wait to found that out from unapologetic staff in person. read more
