We had a blast at the escape room right by the downtown crossing/ park street next to AMC Theatre in Boston Common. The "Institute" room had some great puzzles that kept us on our toes. The "decor" of the room was really amazing. We managed to escape with few mins to spare! They also had a few games and drinks for purchase at the 2nd floor lobby if you want to hang out pre- or post- games. Ezra, our game guide, was awesome--super helpful and stayed in character. Our family has done a wide variety of escape rooms, and I have high standards. The Hot Dog Heist was exceptionally fun. Great game master (Gabe) who perfectly calibrated the number, timing, and content of hints so we got maximum challenge and feeling of accomplishment, while finishing all the puzzles right on time. The content was creative, funny, and cohesive, and there was always plenty to do in parallel so nobody was left bored waiting to contribute (which usually happens in our group of twin 13 year olds, 17 year old, and two adults). Amazing. We did The Retreat. The story was funny and captivating, with plenty of unpredictable twists. The puzzle was sufficiently challenging while also being very well executed--once you figure something out, you can be pretty sure it's gotta be right, because the things just make sense. The staff was great at making some accommodation requests in advance and emailed me to double-check on some things. They were very inclusive and obviously familiar with trans folks and disabled folks. Francesca was our guide and was super friendly and gave us options in terms of whether to receive hints any time we were slightly off track, not at all, or only when falling dangerously behind. This was my second game at Trapology (the first being the Retreat and this time being The Institute). Both times we escaped with minutes to spare. These games are very thought out and it's relatively easy to see / know what to do when and next. My favorite part is our Game Masters who gave us amazing hints and responded and interacted with us hilariously! Shout out to Calypso and Dani who made these games even more fun! read more

There was a time where Trapology was one of my preferred room escape venues in Boston, but things have changed for the worse in a few ways. They've gotten quite expensive, and the last game we played there was heavily over hinted. We did not request hints, but the staff member assigned to us essentially instructed us how to do the entire room, such that we set the speed record for our group size (meaning we spent much less than an hour in the room). We much prefer room escape places that trust us to ask for hints when we need them, and give us time to figure out things on our own. read more

I loveeee this place!! I can't wait to go back and try another room. We got a call 30 minutes before our room that the Boobie Trap was broken. We were so sad but decided we could do the Drunk Tank instead. When we arrived at our scheduled time, to our surprise, they had fixed the boobie trap and we got to do our original room! We had SO much fun in the room. Patrick was the actor in the room and he was hilarious and helpful. We didn't escape within the hour but still had so much fun! Brittany was incredibly outgoing and informative, and helped guide us through my first Escape Room. We were comprised of a group of both adults and preteens, with varying degrees of experience. It was easy to all enjoy ourselves, and I was impressed by the detail of the mystery/rooms. Our group was joined by two younger men, who took the escape room genre much more seriously than we did. Great Experience! We played twice and both times were top notch fantastic! The rooms are tricky, interactive, full of surprises and special effects, enjoyable!! The delivery of additional cues is unique and fun. I'm certain that the team behind the door wants you to have a maximum of fun but also wants to see you succeed. We played the Hot Dog Room and the Camping Room... We made it to escape once! Second time was beyond our speed and luck... Both times we had great amount of fun, focus and good laughs... I came here for a corporate event and had a lot of fun in their Crush Depth room! Unfortunately for us, we weren't able to escape :( Each room had a success rate of 17%-30% so they're all quite hard but ours was the hardest. There won't be any spoilers in this review, but the escape rooms here are multi-rooms and while the lobby is on the second floor, your room may be located on the fifth. Not a real concern, but you do have to check in on the second floor first. The staff members were all very accommodating as we were like 10 minutes late to our escape rooms. Also at the end, we got to take photos and were able to print them out for free! read more

Like it! We did the Institute one. Probably the first time for me when we didn't finish the room. I like more though when the staff decides when to give clues more than when you request them, just because it's difficult to keep track of time and understand if we have more time to think about it or we don't. Tasks were cool, finally not just combination locks, however there were couple mistakes when the door didn't react when the task was solved and another one. I really enjoyed my escape room experience at Trapology. This was my first time at Trapology but my third time going to an escape room. I went with my bf and it was just us (didn't have to play with other random ppl which I liked (I think the day we went wasn't crowded and we also had the first reservation of the day so we were able to play alone)). Our room had a live actor, Connor, playing a role so it was super cool. He did a great job staying in character. Some clues were a bit harder to understand/find and not as intuitive but overall we had a great time and beat the room! Will definitely be coming back for another room!! read more

My friends and I went to Trapology on the first weekend they were once again open for indoor games since COVID came and ruined indoor activities for everyone. My group had 4 people, 2 of whom were 1st-time-escape-roomers, and we did "Booby Trap." This room is fun, hilarious, and involves an "in room actor" (ours was John and he was the BOMB.COM). Aside from the fact that everyone at Trapology was super nice, covid-aware, and helpful in answering our questions, I was impressed with how put together they were -- given we came on their first indoor-room weekend in over a year! My group did escape the room with some hints and we all had a total blast! We will definitely be back. Booby Trap is an 18+ room and that's good b/c at one point I was holding 3...uh, intimate toys...at once haha. The clues and puzzles and degree of difficulty was just right for our group -- John definitely nudged us in the right direction a couple times when we were getting waaaay off track and we appreciated that so much :) Highly recommend. read more

I have done five escape rooms and this was definitely my favorite. The employees were so friendly and helpful - especially our game master, Rachel! Trapology's spaces were so clean and intricate (and I believe Rachel told us that all the rooms were designed in-house which is pretty cool and unique). The elevator to get to Trapology was kind of sketchy (very old and small - like my two friends and I could fit comfortably but probably no more than 5 people) but that wasn't a problem, we just opted to take the stairs back down. My group did "Steampunk Train," which I 10/10 recommend! It is for 2-5 players and there were three of us. We got out with six minutes and ten seconds to spare and used two out of our three clues. There were several unique puzzles that we had not encountered in any of the other escape rooms we've been in. The set up was three separate rooms, which we enjoyed being able to work through. We had SO much fun and talked about it the whole way home. All of us are from Connecticut, but we definitely plan on coming back one day to try out one of the other five rooms! read more

This was my first attempt at any escape-the-room game and we escaped! 100% success rate. BOO-YAH. 10 of us went for a good friend's birthday and we all had a blast! I think what makes Trapology so successful for the fact that each game has an engaging storyline. From the beginning of the visit, you are emerged in the story of the escape game and it drives the game forward as you work your way through the room. Genius concept. What's more intriguing is that the puzzles throughout the whole game were very diverse, allowing various members of the team to play their strengths. I'm surprised to even see myself contribute at all. I hate mind games. Because I suck. Thankfully we were able to get three clues (you must dance for each of them). Definitely the most intricate and well-thought out live escape game I've ever played. Highly recommend it! We did the Hustler. Our group got split into two rooms. Lots of fun! Difficulty: 5 locks Success rate: 20% (damn we a smart group of 10!) Cost: $30/person Location: Across from Boylston station. Was a pain finding parking so try to take the T in. read more

We did The Retreat and The Hustler. Great art design and production value in both, but for the puzzle-connoisseur like myself, The Hustler is more fun. For The Retreat, 2-3 people is ideal. For The Hustler, there should be a minimum of 3, but 4 is ideal. The Retreat is medium difficulty and The Hustler is hard. Five star rating is for The Hustler. I'd give the Retreat 4 stars. MILD SPOILERS for The Retreat: (1) fun, immersive room with a more basic feel and simpler puzzles. Good for newbies. (2) no jump scares but there are gory elements (3) I like the creativity of the directional puzzle! MILD SPOILERS for The Hustler: (1) loved the decor and setup of splitting the team. Super fun trying to figure out how to get back into contact with the teammate(s). (2) puzzles were great at being in theme and collaborative (3) high number of quality puzzles made it very enjoyable though two people is unlikely to be enough to solve unless both are super puzzlers (4) wish I had known earlier on that there was an alternative to crawling. I made note of my bad back when I got my ticket but got no information until I had to ask for an accommodation 3/4 of the way through the time. May be better if this was explained upfront. (5) I would definitely recommend this room to fellow escape room addicts as one of the stand out rooms! read more

This was my first time doing any kind of escape room. I went with a group of 4 and we did the Boobie Trap. The facility was very clean and nicely decorated. Bathrooms were one person and also very clean. We were checked in, had a place to put our coats and were given rules. Our game expert, BRITTNEY was in character and so funny but also helpful when we got stuck. The clues were helpful and we were able to complete with 5 mins left. This was a harder room for first timers but still possible to do. We will def be going back! read more

Trapology offers a wide variety of themes and difficulties in their rooms and I've done them all except The Retreat which I will eventually get to. Every room uses original puzzles and clues specific to the rooms which makes it fun. The only room I did not love was the Sunken Depths (the submarine) due to the lack of "flow" and connection with the puzzles. The staff there are also super nice and helpful - John was our live actor in Boobie Trap and he played the role perfectly! He also walked us through the room at the end and answered any lingering questions we had so feel free to ask about any puzzles you weren't sure about. read more
