I only had breakfast there two times that I have been.I had the worst home-fries.It was just chunks of potatoes with no seasoning. The rest of food was Ok. Breakfast is available all day, that's the only good thing that I enjoyed. The service was average. I don't thing I will go back unless I really want to have breakfast late afternoon. read more

This place is bizarre. The food was ok- nothing spectacular, but I'd pick other places over this one because I question the quality of the food. When we arrived the host quickly directed us to our table like we were cattle and literally threw our menus on the table. Seriously? No "have a good meal" or anything. But ok, he's a young guy. I didn't expect a Disney experience. Our waitress greeted us within 5 minutes. She was just the right amount of nice, but also seemed like she lacked experience or didn't care. Our food was just OK. My waffle was def not as good as Ye Ole Waffle. It's not like their specialty at Breadman's , so whatever. Their home fries were huge and not really crispy. Eggs were kinda mushy. So here's what we noticed that was god awful. The side of the table was dirty. The bottles of ketchup and sauces looked filthy, we had to ask for a new bottle of ketchup... from a different waitress because our waitress was not to be found. My friend got one refill that took 10-15 min to get--- she never asked me if I wanted a refill (when I clearly needed one). We noticed another waiter knocked over a customers food and ranch went all over their table....and the customer was having to clean it up because the waiter just abandoned their table!!! What the heck? I understand him having to go re-order the guys side dish.. but jeez have someone (a bus boy?) come clean that crap up! This place gets 1 star for typical denny's style food with absolutely dreadful service. They obviously hide behind UNC decor to stay in business. read more

This is a chapel hill institution for sure. Country-style blue plates, NC bar-b-q, and all day breakfast. I think the price is ok compared to the portions. The decor is all Tar Heels, in what looks like an old chain steak house building. They have a limited bar (beer & wine) as well. I wish I could leave zero stars for this place. A group of us met at this place for brunch on Sunday. We were meeting some relatives that we have not seen in a very long time. The host wanted to seat nine of us at a booth that would comfortably seat six. We asked for tables instead and near the front was one large round table and one square table. We asked if we could push the tables together and the host said yes and helped. Then the host came over and told us that two different servers would be waiting on us and we were all fine with that idea. Next thing we know, the host comes over and says, "He said we can't push tables together." When I asked who he was, the host left and here comes another employee (never identified himself) and he says to my friend (a 62 year old woman) for her to move the tables back and mumbles something about the fire marshall. We were in a wide open space and everyone could get easily in and out and around our area. He was just being a jerk. The kicker was he said we could go back to the original booth and add a table on the end. That area was far smaller than the area we were in and the table would have blocked the aisle. I wanted to leave and did not eat, but some of the group didn't want to go look for another place, so we stayed. The rest of the group said the food was mediocre at best. Also, no toilet paper in the women's bathroom. I would never go back. That one rude employee ruined our very limited time together. read more

One of the best, if not the best, Chapel Hill breakfast "greasy spoons". This place would/should show up on the Chapel Hill icon list. The food here is very good on a consistent basis. The home fries are some of the best you will ever find. I often opt for a sandwich called "The Brass Key". Highly recommended for some good ole unpretentious good food! read more

Went there hoping to have a nice meal. I ordered the bbq sandwich, and was super disappointed when it arrived. The meat tasted like it had gone bad. I understand that North Carolina bbq has a vinegar taste but this was just not good. We had a kind waitress but the manager was defensive and never directly apologized. read more

We ate breakfast at Breadmen's today. We have eaten there around 500 times. I paid with a $100 bill but got change for a $20. When I returned and asked for the rest the host/cashier was rude. The owner didn't begin to apologize. The man knew exactly what he was doing. I used to supervise cashiers. That mistake is IMPOSSIBLE to make. If I could give a negative number of stars I would make it a minus ten. I would have eaten there 500 times before I die. Owner/manager was rude. This is the kind of place that trades on location (near UNC-CH campus), where food quality and service aren't important. I grew up in an area where 24-hour diners were easy to come by. I find their sparsity (nay, non-existence!) in the Triangle to be a huge shortcoming. Certainly there are good brunch offerings to be had (just not at 4am, when undoubtedly there must be many other folks having similar cravings as me!). Breadman's is one such place. Like Elmo's, it serves up the usual brunch items (omelets, pancakes, bacon, and hashbrowns) with some stabs at fancier stuff (like quiche or eggs benedict) and also a sandwich-y lunch kind of menu. There's a bar here, which strikes me as odd; but I do know some folks who come here for an evening drink, so (shrug) to each his own. There's also a smoking section, which is practically unheard of in Chapel Hill, and a handful of patio tables outside. There's a private lot that has plenty of space on the weekdays but does get pretty tight on Sunday. read more

To sum up Breadmen's in one word it would be "aight." Painfully average would probably be a better description. It's one of the countless places in Chapel Hill that makes me wonder why it is so popular. You could get the same breakfast, if not better, ay IHOP or Denny's. If you like breakfast all day type places you'll like it just fine. You can get an omelet or a veggie plate any time and it will be totally acceptable. The food is very basic, bland, and boring. There is nothing interesting on the menu. And they don't do a stellar job of serving up the classics. Service is acceptable too, atmosphere the scene of a UNC upchuck. All things Tarheel grace their walls, right down to some good ole Rams horns. It pays homage to its town and is sort of a staple but it's just so much eh. I go back because my husband and I can fill up for under $20 and he likes the hamburger steak. I settle for a plate of subpar whatever and zone out on all the Carolina blue. read more

There was a 5 minute wait to be seated, which is absolutely absurd. Finally got seated and it took them 30 seconds to get a waiter to my table. Ridiculous. Took them about 10 minutes to finally bring my food out which is garbage. After I ate the extremely mediocre food, they had the nerve to still charge me for the food that took years to get to me. To top this all off, the pelican toothpick dispenser that I love to play with was out of toothpicks, which made me a bit furious. Overall 4/5 experience. read more

Breadmen's is a staple in the Chapel Hill dining experience. Serving breakfast (and other diner-like foods) all day long, it is a cheap place to grab a good meal. The service is great even when busy and the food comes out fast. I recommend the biscuits and gravy, but all of the breakfast options are great. All dishes are under $10, so it fares well with the college student budget. Also, it's a good place to go for groups because of the cashier check out setup, making it easy to split bills. Another great thing is that Breadmen's has a huge parking lot, which tends to be a problem in the Chapel Hill area. read more

I have a steady rotation of breakfast places that I visit, but for some reason I always forget about Breadmen's. Maybe it's because I never went there as a student, even after hearing my friends rave about it. When I did get around to visiting, I was sort of underwhelmed. My french toast was good, but then again it's just as good at other places. The service was pretty bad, even though they weren't exactly busy. They did have some creative dishes on the menu, which I appreciated even though I went with a more basic choice. I think the prices are okay, but there's better food (and service) to be had at other places in the area. read more

Going to breakfast is my favorite. I just love it. Being unfamiliar with the CH/Durham area, we were unsure of where actually sit down, non chain, breakfast places were. Breadmen's kept popping up during our search. It's a typical diner in the middle of a college town. The ambiance reflects such. UNC decor with a dash of typical diner. Food was better than a greasy diner, but still diner food. I ordered the Mexican omelet that was just egg, salsa, and sour cream. Simple and tasty, though heavy on the sour cream. Potatoes were large, crispy chunks, still tasty. Also ordered the blueberry crumb cake. It was a tad dry but the brown sugar topping made up for it. Coffee was okay, but made me feel overly full. Service was okay. They were busy but when we did catch our waiter, he was pleasant. Don't expect a great meal, but rather a homely, cozy one. read more
