First time in here! Decided to grab some breakfast on my way to the farmer's market this morning. When I say this place is no frills, I mean it. That's not a dig, btw, the restaurant is very clean. Didn't check out the bathrooms, but if there anything like the dining room, you'll be fine. I got their breakfast plate and a cup of coffee. All for under $10!! Great deal! I got 2 eggs, scrambled, grits sausage, and big ole buttery biscuit. The lady at the counter was friendly and helpful. The coffee was super hot and fresh, perfect way to start my Saturday. Didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes for my meal. Food was delicious. It did come on a styrofoam plate, which is a little off putting, but I'll look past it. The only critique/warning I'd give to you would be customers is this, some of the crowd there was a bit interesting, might be why they weren't busy at 830am on a Saturday morning...just leave it at that... Not sure if I'll be back or not but it fulfilled my needs for a quick, hot breakfast! read more

Surprisingly good food for what you pay. Fried chicken, two sides and a drink for about $6! Chicken was delicious, not greasy. Tea was just right. The decor isn't that great and that's a shame. You get what you pay for. If you were to go into a bar in Chapel Hill NC, and plop $3.19 on the table, they'd give you a Pabst Blue Ribbon If you went to a Dollar General and gave the clerk $3.19, they'd give you a bag of off-brand potato chips, a bottle of off brand soda, and a recalled toy from the 80s. Now. If you go to Country Junction and cough up $3.19, they'll give you: -Two eggs done however you like -Either grits or hash browns (not great hash browns) -Your choice of meat (Sausage, steak, fried chicken, or "country ham," which appears to be hot dogs) -Toast or a biscuit. The ambience at Country Junction is interesting. At some times this is the place that good old boys that have been living in Carrboro for 50 years will talk about their health and local politics. At other times, the only language you'll hear spoken is Spanish. The hours are strange also: 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM That's a great freaking deal for a few bucks. So, that is my summary of what's good about Country Junction: It's freaking cheap, and the food is cheap but tasty. There's bad things to report as well, unfortanately: 1. The food is all low-quality 2. The service consists of taking a number tag, and waiting for them to bring you your food 3. The place is gritty looking I go to the Country Junction about once a month to get a decent breakfast, quickly, and cheaply. Ordered the 'breakfast special' ... couldn't believe I'd get all that food for only $2.99! Now I believe it, because my 'special' turned out to be 'especially' foul. I suspect if I went into the kitchen, I'd see oily boxes labelled, "egg-like substance #7", "bakun" and bread loaves boasting "now 25% less sawdust!". Even the coffee was thin and sour. I still see people eating in there and am baffled... maybe the rest of the menu isn't as horrible as the 'breakfast special' but I'm not brave enough to find out. read more

This depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for standard, cheap breakfast then this is your spot. This is no-frills, cheap country cooking. Two eggs, hashbrown/grits, meat choice, and toast/biscuit is $3.19. Throw in a coffee and you're looking at roughly $4.50 total. You order at a counter, take a number, and they bring it to you on a sturdy paper plate. No silverware, just plastic stuff here. Again, no-frills. But if that's your goal, a cheap meal, then it suits the bill. Can't speak for lunch taste, but at $4.49 for a meat and access to the vegetable bar it seems like a steal too. This place is old, definitely a little beat up (they could use some new chairs) but its a good quick meal if you need it. I used to eat lunch here almost every week day while working at UPS and in grad school. The food is what cheap, straightforward, and very satisfying. The lunch offerings give you a meat and access to the veggie bar for a very reasonable price. The hush puppies are really good, as are the green beans, spiced cabbage, rice and gravy, etc. The fried chicken has a nice thin crispy coating. None of it is exactly haute cuisine, but it's not intended to be. Can't say much about the breakfast, but the lunch is as good a deal as you can get in the area. read more

Barebones environment, but the food is dirt cheap and was very good. You get an entree from up front for around 5.00, then have your choices of sides from a "vegetable bar" buffet style..the fried chicken was good, and the vegetables (such as pinto beans, mashed potatoes, turnip greens, okra, etc) were better. It almost makes me want to try some of their "real" soulfood options like fried gizzards or turkey necks.. I don't think you can get a cheaper more filling meal in the area at their prices. On most of my dining adventures I'm looking for quality. However, there is the college athlete inside of me that will always reserve a special place for both quantity and cost. Country Junction is not the best breakfast you've ever had, I'll even go so far as to promise you it won't be the second best breakfast you've ever had. What it is is a solid, hearty, though greasy breakfast for pennies on the dollar for what you'll spend elsewhere. Country Junction is located in Carboro right near the Farmer's Market in a lackluster building. Upon entering you'll notice nothing impressive, unless the menu catches your stare. The restaurant itself, staff, and location leaves much to be desired. However, once you notice that you can get eggs, meat, grits, and a biscuit for less than $3, under $4 with a huge coffee (though it probably is both generic and old) the scene changes a bit. This is where locals go for good ole' fried chicken, Southern style. I'm one of those people that judges establishments buy their patrons. When we got there at 11am, there were three other tables taken. (The place has 14 four-tops and 2 two-tops.) By 12noon, only one four-top was empty. There was a slow, but steady trickle of customers by then. Besides my table, I'd bet everyone was a repeat customer. I had the quarter leg fried chicken lunch, which comes with the veggie bar. Fair warning, this is a Southern veggie bar: green beans, fried okra, baked beans, etc. Although I prefer Bojangles', this fried chicken was very, very, very good. Worst place for breakfast in Chapel Hill. The pancakes taste like they were microwaved, and all the other food is just plain too scary to even look at. I'm pretty sure the coffee is Folgers or maybe even old, stale generic Folgers. Don't let the cheap breakfast signs seduce you! read more

I freakin' love the Country Junction. This is not a fancy place. It is not gourmet, it is not going to blow your mind with a mod atmosphere, or a wait staff that speaks Mandarin. Nope. You order at the counter, refill your own damn drinks, and serve your own veggies at the buffet. Here is why the Junc is great. First of all, you get a ton of food for like $5. This is home cookin' kind of stuff -- collard greens, black-eyed peas, fried chicken, country fried steak, etc. Second, it's just a place to relax and eat. This is a blue collar joint, and I mean that in the best of ways. The woman who takes orders is super nice and all business. The customers are about eating, not pretending to pick up on the floral notes of their wine or talking about how many Habitat for Humanity houses they've helped build. Don't expect an Il Palio type experience. Just get your styrofoam plate, load it up with hush puppies and cabbage, and chow down. read more

Very plain and unassuming premises, but I like the food! Down-home country cooking, no pretenses. The "vegetables" (self-serve bar) are as authentic and tasty as any trendy BBQ place in the area. Yes, the greens may be considered "overcooked" by food snobs, but that makes them more digestible. Hushpuppies are replenished regularly. Great value for anyone on a budget. Opens real early for breakfast. If you want trendy and haute ambience, then yes, please, don't come here. This is a gem for the working class / starving student. read more

The whole restaurant is pretty grimy, but the bathroom is gas-station disgusting. That's kind of a red flag. Aside from that, the food is pretty bad. Country Junction is very simple and to the point. About 4 dollars for a cheap but very filling breakfast. Sausage patty, two eggs, biscuit, grits. The biscuit was the only thing I probably wouldn't get again, I just found it very dry and kind of a bready texture. Also warning that the hash browns are of the McDonalds style triangle variety. For the price point these things are to be expected so there's that. Overall, I'd come back every once in a while for a cheap quick meal. read more

I heard and I came. Yes, it truly is inexpensive. Say, $2.99 for 2 eggs however you like them, hash brown or grits and biscuit or toast. How can you beat that? It sure feels like the place time froze in the 50's or 60's and I imagine this is how Chapel Hill/Carrboro was like back then. I've been coming here for about ten years and love the soul food. My favorite is usually the breakfast and at lunch on Wednesdays the chicken pastry! It is a cheap breakfast and lunch joint! There is also a hot bar that satisfies most. Kim is always nice and the food is always served quickly. I wouldn't change anything about this place! A great greasy spoon! read more
