I was in North Carolina so where did I go? Virlie's of course. My mother-in-law moved to Cary after her husband died, but my wife and I still drive over from Cary when we are in town. I took an old friend and co-worker, who has recently moved to Holly Springs, to lunch on Tuesday. Tuesday is the key thing. Every other Tuesday they have delicious fried chicken. As always, it was great. Love this place. My wife went with her brother, his wife and his kids on Thursday for breakfast. Virlie's staff is so good and friendly. I love to support a local small town business. This gave them an extra star. We stopped by for lunch on a Friday. Our party of four found a table pretty easily. The menu is kinda big for such a small place. Today's special was meatloaf and I was going to get something else but I do love a meatloaf sandwich so that's what I went with. The meatloaf tasted good but there was just not enough of it on the sandwich. Hubby had the catfish plate with fries (they were unseasoned and a small amount), cole slaw and hush puppies. He said it was OK. Not above ordinary. We ended with a slice of chocolate chess pie which we all shared. It was very good. I believe they make the pies and cakes in house. Cool, old school diner smack dab in the center of town. Virlie's was recommended to me by the guard at Crosswinds Campground at check-in. So glad we listened to what she had to say. Virlies, I have been using take out as my go to lately.The only issue is they are busy, always, and when I use my iPhone, the background noise at Virlie's makes it hard for the cashier order taker to hear. Which includes my hearing aid equipped self. I will try maybe after 1:00 to order. The only terrible problem might be Virlies is sold out of the daily special. Monday, is chicken and dumpling, I ordered the quart size with cornbread. The Soup was as close to my mother's as I will ever get. Thick, savory, big chunks of thick sauce laden dumpling. The cornbread is sweet cornbread like my mom made for ever. It is not the non sugar cornbread I encounter in the south. My MIL made that type in a cast iron skillet. Awesome service and delicious food! Came here after surgery and the special was chicken and dumplings which were just like my grandmother used to make them many many years ago. The cornbread is the best I've ever had. So good we even ordered a plate to go for tomorrow. We aren't local but tend to stop by here on the way back after our UNC appointments and it never disappoints. Always quality comfort foods and great service! Highly recommend! read more

I went to Pittsboro for a 9am visit with a client. Turns out that I had the wrong time and I had an hour to wait. So.... Breakfast!! What a great mistake. I noticed that the place was full of people. Went in. It was buzzing with activity. They gave me a table right away. I had coffee and placed my order. The food was ready in less than 5 minutes. Ham, bacon and cheese omelette, hash browns and toast. It's a fairly simple breakfast. But it was done to perfection. The food was not overcooked. It was to greasy or dry. I don't remember the last time I order an omelette that was this good. Hash browns were amazing. No wonder the place was packed... Got to locals favorite restaurant for years. Get there early 11:00 am if possible to get a table. Park in the back parking lot because the street parking out front is scarce. Tuesday is the fried chicken special day. Some of the best locally sourced farm to table Southern fried chicken in North Carolina. Variety of great choices on the menu. The shrimp Po'Boy is excellent. Southern fried okra is hot, a little crunch, and delicious. Southern style tea is the beverage I ordered with a few lemons to kick it up a bit. Virlie's impressed me from the moment my family and I walked in to the moment we left. We were immediately greeted warmly by staff and had our drink orders taken shortly after we chose our table. The restaurant is clean and very spacious. I went with my elderly/disabled parents and I really appreciate the space and accessible entrance to the diner. The food was sensational. Everything was hot, fresh, and made exactly as we requested. The portion sizes are excellent. I had a burger and fries and my parents ordered a corned beef reuben and catfish. When we got ready to leave, an employee kindly brought my mother's box of leftovers to the front for us; we forgot it on the table while we went up to pay for our meal. Went to Virlie's for breakfast on Saturday morning. I had a ham biscuit. BIG piece of ham on a homemade biscuit. One of the best that I have had. Wife had French toast with eggs and bacon. Our go-to place in Pittsboro was closed for the day, so we stopped here. Virlie's does not look like much when on the street, and inside, it's the look and feel of an old family diner. Stopped for lunch with my family while out and about shaking off some cabin fever due to the global pandemic. The Reuben is a great choice for lunch! The chili was excellent! The service was good. Some of the COVID restrictions were made apparent when instead of refilling our drinks, we were all brought a new cup. I'm not a big fan of cake, but I had some anyway. No complaints about the lemon cake. I prefer fruit/berry pies, but there were none on the menu that day. If you're looking for eclectic, something different or unique, this is probably not the place. Believe the hype--Verlie's is the real deal We just moved to Chatham County and Verlie's came highly recommended, and boy did it deliver. It's a restaurant time-machine to honest, tasty southern diner food served up in an unpretentious, homey atmosphere. We showed up for lunch on a Tuesday and the place was almost full. Little did we know it was fried-chicken Tuesday which is a big draw. They have daily specials that all the locals know and show up accordingly. The menu is perfect diner fare with a few unexpected extras. We had a pimento-cheese sandwich with cole slaw, and a chicken-salad melt sandwich with chili. Everything was fresh, hot, and very tasty. The service was efficient and very friendly. Our server, upon finding out we were new in town, took the time to welcome us and give us an overview of the local dining and drinking scene. Talk about your down-home cooking spot to eat. On Fridays, they have open grill night, so if you love food on the grill, you need to go then. But all the other days, like I said, it's down home cooking. Country fried steak, some many different sandwiches to choose from. And if you like salads, they make the best, the portion is big, and the veggies are fresh and crisp. They service is the best, your drink will never go empty. And everyone is so nice, you can tell they love their customers. One last thing you have to try their cakes. We have eaten here for Breakfast and for Friday Night Steak Dinners. They are both wonderful beyond words. The steaks are so juicy, tasty and huge I thought I was in heaven the first time I tried the Ribeye Steak. I can't believe it took us so long to find this place after moving here from Morrisville. read more

People come here Friday night for the steak! My personal favorite is the Ribeye done medium. It comes with a fat potato done up however you want it and a salad. You can smell the steak all over downtown Pittsboro every Friday night. People also come here in the mornings for a reasonably priced breakfast! Eggs, toast, biscuits - everything you'd expect from a local diner in the south. The restaurant also has great diner style food and domestic beer for all other occasions. This doesn't bother me but if you've never been here before, don't expect a fancy restaurant. The inside looks like it is from 1985.
