And yet, out of those two options, the one I wanted to try ("no-grony"), they didn't have all the ingredients available for. Ended up ordering Harvest Mule which was good, but it was $7 before tax and it came in a small size. This was worth $5 tops. I don't think I'll be coming back here. read more

Good coffee and WiFi. If you want food, I'd recommend going elsewhere. They have limited pastry options and no way to heat them up. Seating is limited (seats around 24 inside plus a back patio) and as you might expect in this area, it's mostly taken up by students on their laptops slowly sipping their one cup of coffee. I had seen Perennial on Instagram a few times and knew I just had to go there- not only did they have all the classics but very creative coffee and tea drinks as well as mocktails. The matcha lattes did not disappoint and were just gorgeous. Served in a matcha bowl, the color was a vibrant, deep green and the flavor was perfect! We also tried the Tyger Tyger which is a Thai iced tea made with coconut milk, activated charcoal and coconut whipped cream. If I lived closer to Chapel Hill I would be at Perennial all the time. Perennial is my favorite coffee shop in chapel hill! My favorite is their Maple Spice Latte (which is winter seasonal, so get it while you can). They tend to use more spices and interesting combinations of flavors in their drinks opposed to the normal coffee shop syrups, which is what makes it stand out to me! Atmosphere: Perennial is a cozy, cute cafe with lots of plant decor! There are a few tables inside and outdoor patio tables if you want to hang or get some work done. Service: Our barista was kind and had our drink ready quickly. Food: We ordered an iced vanilla latte. The vanilla syrup is homemade (along with their other syrups) and the sweetness really came through. The espresso also tasted decently strong, especially with the drink being iced! Overall: We had a great experience at Perennial and enjoyed our iced latte. In the future, we'd love to try more of their syrup flavors, especially their more unique ones. Perennial has a special place in my heart, I went on an amazing first date here. I continuously go back whenever I am in town. Their coffee is great and so is the staff. I'd passed by this shop in the past and the exterior always caught my eye. So I finally went! Covid times: they have you stand a distance from the register/coffee bar and order. They have one of those small devices for you to insert or tap your payment method, but no screen so they'll tell you the total and ask you if you want to tip. They have a good size menu with both coffee and tea as well as some other alternative options. I just got an iced latte which was solid but nothing special. It was relatively quiet there with chill ambiance, conducive to productivity! They have a mix of indoor seating, seating out front, and a side patio area. The decor is super super cute. At first I was a bit confused because in previous photos I saw they had an upstairs seating area but I think within the past year or so they moved to a neighboring space. I only wish they were open longer - they close 2 PM on weekdays and 3 PM on weekends. I would definitely go back! read more

Perennial is simply lovely. It's not often I'll say I feel transported to another place, but that's the feeling I got here. Upon arrival you'll see it's quite small but there is an upstairs sitting area. This day classical music filled the space. There is a simple menu of usual espresso and coffee drinks but with an unusual twist - they make outstanding handcrafted beverages. I ordered the rosemary honey latte as it was featured on the chalkboard outside. The very nice young man behind the counter took my order and started to muddle rosemary. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was like I was at a craft cocktail bar! He didn't seem at all annoyed to be taking the time to make my order this way. What an amazing concept so lacking elsewhere. As I opt to sit upstairs I see that no, have not been transported as there are plenty of students working away. I am not a bit put off by this as I appreciate these young minds hard at work. What will they become? Whatever it is, I am sure that their carefully crafted coffee is helping them get there. To start off, the coffee shop isn't exactly what it used to be. It was a 2 story building, really nice atmosphere as you walked, the aesthetic and decor very well done. And now it's just dark and sad, quiet atmosphere which can be good when it's not awkward. Coffee was good though! Great flavor. Customer service was alright, felt like I didn't get the best customer service because I walked in without a mask. I can't believe I've lived here two years and have taken this long to get to Perennial! My manager got me a gift card here so I headed out on a Saturday afternoon to check it out and get some work done. The atmosphere is perfect: clean, open, plenty of seats, white all's and tons of plants. Such a relaxing vibes I love the character of the building - you can easily miss it if you aren't paying attention. Their menu is great - I love the coffee choices and a few interesting/unique lattes. I got the honey cinnamon cappuccino and it was delightful. And you know the latte art is gorgeous at a cute little place like this. The chairs aren't the most comfortable, but honestly that's my only complaint. The music was perfect - hip, calming, but interesting. Some of the coffee shops here play music that is so loud and obtrusive for working. I didn't even feel like I needed to listen to my own music. Hmmmm. I've been here several times here and I don't know what I think still. My first visit was not a pleasant experience. I had a rosemary latte that I did not enjoy (much to my surprise because I love things that have herbs where they shouldn't be, but it wasn't balanced to me). Sound carried through the store, so I could hear the baristas and their friends gossiping loudly even upstairs. A friend wanted to come back the next week, and I agreed. He recommended the chai latte. I did like this more, and the experience was generally better. My third trip back was similar. They make a good Americano. I appreciate the attention spent to making the drinks (even weighing out the coffee grounds). The decor looks like my Pinterest boards with exposed brick, plants, and subway-like tiles. The seating is EXTREMELY limited though with only a handful of tables. I was here during the summer, so it wasn't a problem. However, I don't know that I would even try now with all of the students back in town. read more

For me, a beautifully crafted cup of coffee is more important than aesthetic or design but this place has it all. (coffee snob alert) The location is prime and very conveniently located. When you walk in it feels very small and crowded but there is an upstairs with more seating. The decor of the shop is so beautiful and simple and makes for a great experience. I always appreciate this kind of thing. The staff is almost always very helpful and friendly. They not only serve coffee but pastries, tea, and lattes, too. I always order a pour over and have yet to be disappointed. I will say that if you plan on coming with a group, go somewhere else unless you want to sit outside. The seating is limited. The mark of a good coffee shop is the quality of their drip coffee, and I'm sad to say it's really not good here. Being from the west coast, I admit that my standards are higher for coffee shops as we take our coffee seriously out there, but I still think it's possible to do it right no matter what coast you're on. When we ordered our coffee, we requested a little bit of cream and upon receiving it noticed that it looked curdled and had specks in it. The barista noticed our confusion and told us that this is normal because of the creamer they use. Either we were served non-dairy creamer, which is not normal when you ask for half and half, or our half and half had curdled, which I can assure you is really not normal. When creamer curdles, either the coffee is too acidic or the creamer is too old. This shop might work for you if you're only in it for the aesthetic, which is admittedly nice, or if you order coffee with flavor or something else to mask the weirdly acidic beans. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend. read more

The vibe in the cafe is cute and a great place to study/do work - if you can get a table, that is. Sometimes it gets a bit crowded and there's nowhere to sit. Seating is pretty limited if you want your own table and don't want to share the communal one in the center of the shop. I've experienced different things with different employees in terms of friendliness - some are super friendly and some are pretty apathetic. None of them have been rude, though.
