It's late, around 11:30 pm. I'm hungry but I don't want fast food. I want some good fresh quality food! Where am I going to get that at this hour?? Enter, the Brazen Head! A late night bar and restaurant located in the Marina district. I walk in, and there's a host who I must say was very polite and welcoming. A good start already. He tells me it will be about 15 20 min to be seated. He tells me to have a seat at the bar, relax and he will get me once a table is free. It's not a big restaurant. It's small but with lots of character. It's like an old English pub. The lights are low. Dark with ambient lighting. The servers are dressed in black and white. An elegant feel to the restaurant. I'm seated to my table after only a 10 min wait. I look at the menu and my mouth is just salivating! There's just so many good looking items to choose from! Aged angus prime rib, pepper steak in red wine sauce, beef stroganoff, I'm giddy with all the great items to choose from! I see a soup on the menu that caught my eye. French onion gratinee. OMG the best French onion soup I've ever had! Aged gruyere cheese and mozzarella cover the soup. The cheese is melted. It's oozing in to the soup. It had a distinct flavor to it. It's rich and sweet. The onion soup is made even better once combined with the melting hot cheese. I also order the beef stroganoff as it is a special that night. Sooo good! the pasta tastes fresh and homemade. The beef is tender. The onion mushroom sauce is creamy and smooth. One of the better stroganoffs I've eaten. The service is also great. Very prompt with taking plates away, refilling water, and always checking up on me to see if I need anything. Great service, great food, great place! By far one of my favorite late night spots! There's not too many late night spots that serve great quality homemade fresh food. I sure am glad the Brazen Head is one of them. I really loved our whole Brazen Head experience (except for one part, but that's at the tail end) --- from the wonderfully friendly host (who was kind enough to tell us the wait time over the phone) to him seating us 20 minutes later when we arrived and to our delightful server. The ambiance is extremely cozy and you do feel as though you are spending a rainy evening in an English pub, no doubt. While the atmosphere is loud, surprisingly, we were able to have a very intimate conversation across our table with no extras "HUHs" and "SAY THAT AGAINs". The food was great - I had the NY strip with veggies and my date had the veal piccatta (loved it). Nice wine menu and even better dessert menu but unfortunately we had to skip that part --- but we won't next time. Now for the bad: it is such an extreme buzz kill that after the coziest two hours and as we're now locked in to a very intimate conversation, we chose the "debit" feature (no credit cards) and were bombarded with that silly machine on our table while they rang up their bill and typed in the tip that we had to say verbally (and then we had to wait for the darned receipt to print). Easily fit 25 people on a busy night Small, quaint, homey, not hipster, old school, doing it right! In a nutshell everything they offered was delicious, let me break down what we sampled and how all of it faired. Escargot - yes they have it, yes I tried it, yes it is good!! Who doesn't like butter and garlic with piping hot anything!!! If you are not on the adventurous side then maybe no for you, the escargot where chewy, not grainy, kinda like chewing on chicken skin texture is my best description. The butter garlic basically makes any dish flavorful, I would sample if your courageous enough The seafood bisque - I wanna say elegant but I don't know if that could do it justice, light, milky, savory, flavorful bisque, one of the better bisque I have had in a really long time, no diced bits of anything just straight up sipping this dish till the end, if no ones looking tilt the bowl and go to town hahaha yes it is that good Prime rib - made always med-rare for me, had to say they do a good job, their cut had just enough meat and fat to even out the flavor, just enough so you walk away content and searching for a nightcap just down the street after. The prime rib was lightly seasoned, I usually don't like my meat prepped this way but here it was done just right, side of white horseradish to make that prime rib dance in your mouth. We were looking for somewhere classy but not overly expensive to have a nice romantic dinner to celebrate our engagement. The brazen head exceeded our expectations. Our greeter was charming and cordial. The ambience is dark and private with a vintage feel. Food is very classic in its selection. We had a great lobster bisque , some brisket sliders and perfectly cooked and presented New york pepper steak and filet mignon. Service here was excellent, unfortunately the food was only mediocre when we went. We started off with the escargot and oysters Rockefeller. These were actually both the highlight of the meal. For entrees we did the prime rib and veal piccata. The prime rib was a little on the cold side and a little chewy. The veal piccata was pretty bland. Still providing amazing meals during Covid. I'm not exactly sure what magic they are using to translate the cozy ambiance into the food, but it takes me back to all those cozy nights, in a dimly lit clubhouse for what felt like was just for my family and I. I wish I could keep this secret, but it must be shared. The staff is always so kind. And they are always so accommodating and lovely. Please. What I thought was going to be a late night munchie turned into a pretty fancy meal at this hour. Escargot - love escargot plain or swimming in a pool of butter, yum French Onion Soup - Ooo that layer of cheese though, and the crust on the side of the bowl, superb. It was the perfect romantic dinner with the dim lighting and just what I was looking for. My husbands steak was a juicy "whole cow", my salmon was tasty, the margaritas I had got the job done and then some. The man standing outside gave us a table right away and once we sat in a small romantic table for 2 they were also open to switching us tables per request (my husband likes to sit next to me). This is a wonderful, old San Francisco haunt. It has an incredible ambiance, great for date nights or a cozy get together with close friends. We celebrated a friend 40th here and no reservations allowed. There was no wait at 5:45 on a Saturday night. The food was remarkably yummy. I enjoyed their signature New York pepper steak with creamed and sautéed spinach. It was 5 out of 5 stars. The service was perfect and the homemade chocolate Pot dessert was delectable. Every now and then I drop in for a drink and appetizer. The bartender is fantastic and hands down makes the best dirty Martini West of the Mississippi. I have prowled all of this country high and low looking for the best Martini. Their bartender should be making them for 007 in the movies. A friend and I wanted to grab a drink before sushi and this pub was closest to. We luckily got 2 seats at the bar next to 2 other couples who were regulars. We are absolutely making this a regular date-night destination. Love the regulars, love the other couples (usually mid-20s to late 40s), love Michael the bartender (not just because he has a good strong name...but for his amazing drinks, no-nonsense attitude, and great sense of humor). You can get the full menu at the bar (cash only tho, VERY old school till) but the appetizers are pretty significant so be careful not to over order. Bread Pudding was great, delicious Dark n Stormy's, and the beef bourguignon was really filling (and fun to split since we weren't starving). It's nice that they have little TV's near the bar, but they are out the way, not smacking you in the face like some 60" flat panel TV sports bars. Let's start with the lighting. Glowing. Golden. Relaxxxxing. You won't really need spa massages if you eat here on a regular basis. It's intimate and charmingly old fashioned in feel - yet timeless. And now for the food: we had a wonderful dinner here the night before we flew to Boston to get married. It was a little 'last supper' in the city as an engaged couple and it was perfect in every way. Noticed this place had good reviews and when I saw groupon were offering it as one of their deals, picked it up. It's not far from Union Street, but really easy to miss. (Greenwich & Buchanan) Take the door on the corner that looks the most unlike an entrance to a restaurant/bar and that's it! As soon as you enter it's like you've been teleported to an old classy pub in the U.K (minus the swearing). It has a bar and separate seating area, an oldish feel to it and the ambient lighting highlights the various paintings adorning the walls. A themed pub without the tack! The Dungeness Crabcakes were good, the burgers were cooked perfectly and a large dish for the $13, but #1 was the Roasted Garlic Bulb and Camembert Cheese. It was really tasty, even with the Camembert substituted with Brie. The glasses of wine were filled to the brim and my cocktail was good, they don't skimp on the booze (hurrah!) hence why I can't remember the name of it but think it was along the lines of Mandarin Sunrise. I got there at around 5pm, which is when they start to serve food, and by 6pm every table was full:) Will definitely go back. read more

We found this place the day after our wedding because, long story short, we had prime rib at our wedding but only got to eat a bite of it and our caterer didn't pack it up for us so here I was, still with a prime rib craving that needed to be satisfied. As most of you probably know, it's hard to get a reservation at the famous prime rib places in the city so I had to yelp other options. We showed up to brazen head and there were seats at the bar so we took it. I wasn't sure what to expect but the prime rib actually was amazing!! Very tender and flavorful! It was so good we recently just went back again to satisfy my once a month prime rib craving. This time we also tried the oysters but I wouldn't say they're the freshest. Not sure if I would order that again here but definitely will be back when my spontaneous PR cravings kick in! also, love the ambience here! Cozy, dim-lit, vintage feel. Great find at 1 am on a Wednesday morning. And it really is a find. We were armed with an address and, without a sign out front to guide us, had only a slightly out-of-alignment door fronting a softly-lit red room with a speakeasy vibe to tell us we had reached our destination. It wasn't enough to convince our Lyft driver. He was so unsettled that he didn't want to let my wife out of the car until I verified it was legit. It is - very legit. Bar on the right, largely empty dining room on the left. We sat down, were greeted by a friendly young server, and chowed on excellent escargot, pasta, and New York steak with pepper sauce. Immediately upon walking into this little hideaway neighborhood fav, you are transformed back into an Old SF Vibe. The bar seating is warm and intimate. We were accommodated quickly and seated. We came earlier on a Saturday night (6:15pm-ish?) and had to wait about 20 mins for a party of 2. We ordered- -Ahi Tuna Tartare ($14- Wasabi, teriyaki dipping sauce, sesame seaweed salad): Solid dish, the fish was really fresh and the sauce and seaweed salad went well with it. Plenty of avocado and the chips they serve with it were good. -Brazen Burger ($13): Cooked a perfect medium. The patty was really thick and juicy. The bf thought it was one of the better tasting burgers he's had, but I thought it was just good. Probably more of a guy's burger since it didn't come with any of the fancy stuff, and it was a big burger. I could barely finish. -New York Strip Pepper Steak, 10oz ($24- Creekstone premium Black Angus beef w/brandy veal demi-glace cream sauce): Their signature dish! Cooked a perfect medium rare. However, neither one of us was a big fan of the cream sauce- it was too sweet for me. Overall, although the food was good and I enjoyed my dining experience, I wasn't wowed to the point of wanting to return anytime soon. I used a Bloomspot so the dinner was a good deal, and there were no hassles redeeming it. Servers are really nice, and food comes out quickly. I could not be luckier to live right next door to this place. 3 wonderful experiences at Brazen: 1. My purse got stolen and nobody was home to let me in my apartment so I came in here and asked to use someone's phone to call my landlord. Everyone was really nice and helpful and I got into my apartment! 2. Came here for a romantic dinner with my boyfriend. We got the meatball appetizer, I got the pork, he got some fish, it was delicious. There was a great beer special that we took advantage of too. 3. My boyfriend, my roommate and I came here for a late night snack and some beers. The waitstaff is wonderful, the food is delicious, and the crowd is always friendly. With the closure of Liverpool Lil's (2942 Lyon St., San Francisco), we wanted to try a similar type venue, so we chose the Brazen Head. Located in the Marina district, half of our party found street parking easily at 5 P.M (the other half took an Uber X ride). As we wanted to figure out the place, we started with the barkeep. We found a humor-rich and pleasant curmudgeon. Two of us asked for glasses of Cabernet, whatever was open. He informed us that everything was "open," and handed us a wine menu. They had Frank Family Cab, which was rich, semi-sweet, and delicious. The dining menu was larger than we expected, with a varied offering of American cuisine. We ordered, and shared, a variety of appetizers (including Roasted Garlic Bulb & Camembert Cheese...very good). For entrees, we ordered the certified Angus been N.Y. pepper steak (which featured a good brandy demi-glace cream sauce, which was tasty and enhanced the flavor of the pepper steak, but was unusual for us), and the beef bourguignon. The other half of the table ordered the French onion gratinee, the Brazen burger and the filet of sole. All of the food was very good, and appealed to us as comfort food. We left satisfied, happy, with smiles on our faces, and songs in our hearts. Our wait staff included no curmudgeons. They delivered excellent service and were restrained, as they only appeared when they perceived a need. I recommend The Brazen Head for your dining enjoyment. As others have said, this is a hidden gem in the neighborhood. Always a good place to take a date, you can enjoy a drink and/or a meal and be able to hear each other talk. The service is good and the bartenders are old school and don't have attitude like you'll find many bars around town. And the best part is that the kitchen is open late, so you can walk in at midnight and still get a decent meal. The prime rib and steaks are excellent. So why only 4 stars? The prices have risen to a point that they are out of line, particularly at the low end of the menu. $15 for a burger or chicken sandwich is a gouge. I had the burger, and probably had the best meal of all my friends. One had the swordfish and said it was great. I had a bite of the ahi tuna appetizer and it tasted good to me. However all my friends who got ribeyes or other steaks did not like it. They compared it to steak at Denny's. It looked like a steak with a puddle of brown gravy on top. Presentation was terrible and apparently so was taste. My burger was very good, but I found chunks of unchewable ground beef that I had to spit out. Besides that I liked it, but not really for $13. The Brazenhead is supposed to be the oldest pub in Ireland. This obviously was not Irish pub food, though after our meal I wished it was. They offered Guinness out of a can which I refused. I give it 3 stars cuz my burger was decent, but I am definitely not stepping foot in there again. Maybe I should have tried the French onion soup that someone said was amazing. I have always had a wonderful experience when I have visited here in person. It's a classic old school restaurant with great wine list prices and amazing food to match. I cleaned my plate of Penne a la Norma and left nothing behind, as with the French Onion Gratinee. The service was very attentive, warm, and not overbearing. My glass of water would be filled quickly when it was running low and the bread basket was checked multiple times to see if more bread was needed. More bread was needed a couple of times because I kept eating it all. This place is dimly lit with lamps on the tables that give off a darker, calm red light. The ambiance was relaxed. The Bread Pudding à la mode was enough reason to give Brazen Head five stars. That was the best bread pudding I have ever had. I took my time eating it because I didn't want it to end.
