*This is not a review of the food This is to share a story of an encounter of the disrespectful and blatantly racist hostess who obviously doesn't want Asians (and perhaps other non-white ethnicities) in this establishment. We came in looking for a table and she waved her finger in our faces and said "I don't think so, let me check" in a very disrespectful tone. She came back and shook her head at us and asked my wife, "are you local?" Very confused, and wanting to hear her response, my wife responded "no" even though we were born and raised in San Francisco. When asked why it matters, she scrambled to come up with an obviously fake response that had nothing to do with the situation. We left immediately, vowing to never dine here and to inform all of our friends and family the same. If you do dine here, just be conscious that you are dining and supporting a restaurant which employs a racist. read more

I could have drank their martinis, from French to extra dirty, all day. Food was delicious as well, lobster ravioli was to die for and sides were all great tasting. All the food was at a great price point for the quality, have definitely spent more on way lower quality in SF. Atmosphere is lovely feels cozy and romantic and has a wonderful mood. All the staff I interacted with were happy and helpful, increasing the quality of the experience. Definitely another absolute gem in the arena, excited to go back in the near future. read more

Been here 5 times over the past few years. The tables are small but the food is great and the staff are awesome! Such a nice break from the rest of the city, as it is situated in a neighborhood instead of in a business area or strip mall. I will definitely be going back! So yah - real cozy and perfect place to escape to if you are worn out from all the crowds. read more

So meh. FOS was decent and the Caesar salad was basic betty but sending out a raw burger wrapped in some pastry dough and calling it a Wellington and then taking the raw meat back and cooking it to a well done crumble and sending it back was yuck. Fool me once. $100 bucks for 2 no drinks and no dessert. read more

Ordered take out meatballs and penne pasta as well as the sliders. We enjoyed both and would come again. Ordered early evening and they were quite busy my. Order came quicker than expected. Only reason for the four is that there were three nice tasty meatballs but hardly any pasta. It was a large takeout box with food swimming in sauce. I suppose one might like that ratio but it was not balanced as we had sauce meat and no pasta in the end...they really do go together. read more

I haven't been here for four decades! Friend from out of town so went back. Super old school, dark, dim lighting, small place. Has outside patio. Got there 9pm ish and waited about 15 mins. THANK YOU for being open late!! fantastic cocktail menu. We had French Martini, Rum Punch and a chardonnay. All drinks were excellent. Dinner: Shrimp Scampi, Burger, and a salmon. They serve salmon med rare which I don't care for so they did a cook through for me. I was worried it was going to be over cooked. Best salmon served in a restaurant! My daughter loved the sauce on the scampi but wished she could have had pasta instead of mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes garlicky, and green beans a bit over cooked but still good. Burger good. Dessert? Fallen Angel Torte, Crème Brûlée, Bread pudding. Torte good but not outstanding, crème brûlée good FYI tall/deeper versus flatter version, bread pudding good flavor but I thought a bit on the dry side. Great Service! Definitely will be back. Yes, parking tough so unless you like to walk, maybe take a car. read more

The food was served cold, I had to ask the bartender 3 times for salt. He never once asked if we needed anything - which we did! Stunned at the health code rating which wee saw after heating. Bad food, poor service, and UNCLEAN! read more

Our San Francisco friend group has jettisoned all over the Bay Area and beyond, but we recently got the entire crew together at Brazen Head which was a favorite spot for this group and what reminded me that it's long overdue for me to post a review. Whether you just want a 5pm drink or a delicious dinner, I couldn't recommend the ambiance and everyone who works here highly enough. We look forward to our next reunion there... read more

Always the best romantic place in sf. Keep up the good work. Food and wine selection are always on par!!

This place is a great hidden gem in the marina. You won't experience your typically marina clientele here either. They don't take reservations and it's incredibly small inside so expect to wait, or grab a spot at the bar! You can't go wrong with their martinis, roasted garlic plate, French onion soup, pork chop or prime rib. read more

A must while you're in San Francisco! Brazen Head has no sign out front and you just kind of have to know about it. We learned about this restaurant on the TV show, "Check, Please." We came here for the first time in July and had to come back on this trip 5 month later. Brazen Head is an old world style neighborhood steakhouse with great cocktails, delicious steaks and friendly staff. Its small, a little dark inside but has a cozy warm feel to it. It's a little bit out of the way, but we made the trip walking uphill from Union Square! It was worth every huff and puff! Go! You won't be disappointed. We will be back! read more

This place is incredible and one of my favorites in the city for date night! You would never know that it's more than just a bar serving cocktails. The cocktails are delicious, and the food is even better. Steak is always cooked perfectly. Yes it's a tight space, but that's what is super charming about it. (No, I am not friends with the owners or staff, I am a customer that sincerely enjoys eating here with my husband) :) read more

Brazen Head is a classic, old school little gem. This is my go to spot for a good steak, date night, or just swinging by when in the Marina.

A hiden gem [no sign's], 37 years. Steaks , prime rib, A nice Bar a lot of mixed drinks. A time capsule. A felt minion. Burgers are a treat. Smoked salmon. Roasted Garlic, with bread. The clam chowder, is great. A chocolate desert. $50 read more

You guys ever believe in second chances? O.O Like when an old lady beats you with her purse, so you swear you are never going to old country buffet on their happy hour!(But then all of a sudden you get free cookies from an old lady for just talking them for 5 mins :3 [Old people rule! Just... beware of the happy hour in buffets]) I had the chance of stopping by in this place and it was so packed that it looked like a can of sardines in there. (But given the fact that it was the time of the world cup, I was very forgiving. [Si solamente pudiera ganar México una vez la copa! Ugh! Estuviera genial!!!]) Sooo let's jump in! O.O Atmosphere: Was a sensation of a blast from the past. (Minus Brendan Fraser. [If you get the reference o.o you are old like me and like to yell at sidewalks while you pet your pidgeon]) It was if a New York restaurant had sex with an old fashion style decorator from Boston and boom! Brazen head was born! (Which makes you think who was the man in that relationship.) And I could say that I love that feeling of so much history engraved on the walls that makes you feel nostalgic. The pictures hanging give it sense of memory presented to the customers and gives it sweet and memorable detail to it. (Whoa.. you're reading that last part and you're like!:"this guy knows what hes saying!" But this is the same guy that try to wrestle a toy from his poodle with his mouth!o.o) The bar was my favorite section and I could easily say that the old school cash register was the piece of resistance! (It had all the dials and nobs and I wanted to press everything Haha. I loved it!) With a dim lit feeling, it's a great place to let your albino eyes relax from the ever battle with the sun! I may say that it was fairly clean when stepping in, in which made my insect heart happy to see that! Customer Service: Exceptional, without batting an eye. *tries to not blink for 5 mins to let readers know how serious I am.* (My eyes!!!X.X) We sat at the bar and bartender was very kind and kind of jokester in which that's the best type of bartender. (I've had the typical ones that look at you and you order something simple and they look at you like: Bro I went to bar school and got honors!!! Do you know who I am?... to which i just tip 5% and leave at that time. Lol) He was calm and patient and had a handful of recommendations and he seem to know a lot of the regulars, which made me think and feel he sincerely cared for the community. Drinks: Notice how I didnt say food? Haha cuz we just stopped by for a couple of drinks, but honestly from the smell of things! It look amazingly pleasing! My hamster wheel in my eyeballs where spinning hard after the first drink. The fine Gentleman has boulders strap to his wrist. (*ghetto voice from LAX: heeeee poured haaaaaaaard) and I felt like I was having my money's worth. Drinks were simple but honestly did the trick like David Blaine pulling cards out of peoples bodies. I could say that if I didnt live in the NWP I would be a regular. :3 P.S: This is a cash only place, so feel free to bring your stripper money here! :3 Conclusion: I cannot Express the gratitude I have for just going in and giving this place another chance. It's by far one on my favorite stops, if I'm in San Francisco. Like a hidden gem that's in front of everyone's face and all it took was to just walk in!!!..... and get the heaviest drinks this City has ever graciously come across. I wish for many successful years to this place. O.O read more

I grew up going to Liverpool Lil's, my parents were regulars before I was born, and Brazen Head helps me miss it a *little* less. You would never know about this place unless someone tells you about it. The building is unmarked and it's locked inside the heart of Cow Hollow in San Francisco. With that being said, what a fun spot! I'm so happy I found it. Brazen Head is a hidden (literally) gem in Cow Hollow/Marina. Filled with locals who know, there is no signage on the exterior of the building. Inside the the ambiance is dark and intimate with the bar sharing the space equally with the small restaurant. Expect post game celebrations after SFG and even Warriors games. The late night service is a rare treat in a sleepy city that isn't known for eating late. The mood is local friendly with a tiny bit of local arrogance at the bar. This is not a tourist spot but great if you can fit in. It is a weird combination of people getting that last drink in or filling up their stomach after a night out and even romantic diners. But somehow it all works for a very authentic San Francisco experience. The service is genuinely friendly from the hostess and servers with a bit more attitude from the bartenders who are running the show. The food is better than you expect with a mediocre wine list... Silver Oak sitting at the bottom. Check out the memorabilia in the cases off the bar! read more

Brazen Head - Steakhouses Near Me - San Francisco, California

Saturday Date Night: February 26, 2011 @ 6:30 PM Entering The Brazen Head is like entering Harry Potter's world. To me it resembled The Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley, and I almost expected Hagrid to burst in through the door anyminute; and for the portraits on the wall to start talking to one another. On a more mature level, The Brazen Head is speakeasy-ish, intimate and romantic. It is very dark, mysterious with an air of old-world charm to it. It is nestled among the residential part and few blocks away from the upscale shopping strip of the Marina district. It was difficult to get a good picture without using the flash because it was very dark. Here's a vitual tour of The Brazen Head's interior.(Courtesy VR National Virtual Tours): http://tours.digispin.com/?sid=56369 A crest on the door is the only tell-tale sign that you have arrived. The building is unmarked. The restaurant is really small and divided into two sections: bar and dining area. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/0PLv5h5eRTG6fuWLpUmf4A?select=MGQ42ZKhuXob7VtcMZRqwA The place was only lit by a table lamp on each table. You could barely see the people around you. Dark but not perfect enough for clandestine affairs--so do not get any ideas! The place was loud and the tables were placed so close together. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/0PLv5h5eRTG6fuWLpUmf4A?select=pUyKw-EsGoYKYUuH_W7iLw The bar was packed more than the dining area. The place was classy but had more of a down to earth feel to it. The patrons at this restaurant/bar are older (30's to 60's), seemed more mature and sophisticated. The servers were friendly and very efficient. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/0PLv5h5eRTG6fuWLpUmf4A?select=oxc2PlwM6EAGc2CM26HHtA We saw people having drinks and ordering few appetizers than eating dinner. Some just had few rounds of cocktails and/or lingering around over few bottles of wine. My fiance and I went for dinner. DARK AND STORMY: I chose this because the room was dark. :) It had rum and ginger, I think. All I remember was that it was not sweet and strong. Well-made and I liked it! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/0PLv5h5eRTG6fuWLpUmf4A?select=4qi9kLm0ckN38NcJX7HaHw 1/2 DZ CHILLED OYSTERS $12: Very sweet and fresh. The only complaint I have is they gave us one oyster that almost had no meat in it. They could have discarded that one. Perfect for a romantic late night dinner and/or for a nightcap before kissing your honey good nite! OVERALL: A sweet neighborhood spot. Great romantic late night dinner spot. Their last call to order food is at midnight!!! The salmon is farmed... so I ordered the chicken... I didn't want to be extreme, so I didn't ask if it was organic or not.... It came out a bit too sweet (chicken Marsala) for my liking, but their "loaded baked potato" was amazing! Sour cream, butter, chives and high quality bacon chunks, not bits, and the green beans were perfectly cooked in my opinion, it had that crunchy snap still bf it was soggy. My partner got the prime rib, mashed potatoes and creamed spinach ... big win!!! Then the wine selections were top notch! I highly recommend for a date night or nice dinner with friends to catch up and enjoy each other's company. read more

I went with my friend after work this past Saturday and the bartender was great. Very old school super personal. The French onion soup was so good! I typically like the clear broth but this one was perfectly balanced not too savory. The cheese had a great consistency where it didn't get messy. You have to get the cowboy steak they have on special. Delicious herbs thyme and rosemary and even the little fat was very tender. Perfectly cooked steak medium rare. I highly recommend and the full kitchen is open I believe until 1am which is rare now. read more

Sunday nights after 11pm leaves low choices for good food. After seeing a shoe we needed to get sustenance. An old co worker had told me about this place years ago. So we decided we'd hut it up. The restaurant without a sign... way before it became the thing to be a restaurant without a sign. WAY before. It's tiny. It's on the corner. If you blink, you'll miss it. It's dimly lit, romantic, & charming in a storybook way. Not a fairytale way, but rather a Dashiell Hammett novel way. The kind of joint your favorite English or American poet would have surely hung out in. The menu is about bistro fare. Steak & fries. Salmon. French onion soup. The Brazen Burger. All very good, but the star is the steak. For a quintessential BH experience, order a martini at the bar. Or a negroni. Or a Manhattan. Basically, anything masculine, old school, & that would look great being sipped by Humphrey Bogart. It is tiny. Did I mention that? The dining room feels a bit like you're in a train car. It's very cool. You can skip dessert. That's what the cocktail was for. A beloved SF institution. 4 stars. read more

I think every person should live in a city for at least a few years when they're young. One of the most memorable and formative times of my life was when I lived in San Francisco in the '90s, and one of my favorite places during that epic era--and today--is the Brazen Head. It almost feels like a secret club; no sign outside, no cheesy barker at the door, no billboards on Lombard coaxing tourists in. I only found out about this place because a friend of mine lived nearby and she stumbled upon it while exploring her neighborhood for a place to get a drink/meal without being surrounded by the Marina tools (yes, they were around 25 years ago too). The atmosphere is dim, relaxing, and old school. The food is great; traditional/old school food. I've always loved to share the French onion soup and the Caesar salad, followed by the pepper steak or the pork loin. But you can order anything and never go wrong. Prices are very reasonable too. And the drinks are great; this is not a place you'll find a mixologist with a bushy beard, handlebar mustache and eyeglasses that make a statement. This is where I cultivated my love of the martini (back when Eddie--who now owns the place--was tending bar and made the best martini I've ever had). I loved his martinis so much I found an overstock restaurant shop and bought the exact same martini glasses in hopes it would impart something magical into my homemade martinis. I often catch myself sounding like a senior citizen when I bemoan all of my old haunts that have disappeared in the last 25 years, but it's comforting to know that the Brazen Head is still here, hasn't changed much, and is still a fantastic experience. I've recommended this place to dozens of people who have never heard of it, but now consider themselves part of the secret club. read more

Hmmmm, what do I say that hasn't been said before about this place??? Dark: Check. Little lamp on each table: Check. Small Space: Check. Cool little bar: Check. Hidden treasure: Check. Butt cheeks on the window: UNCHECK Short but sweet: 5-6 times I have been here, love the joint. The 2nd time I was here, I went with 4 buddies, my nephew and his friend. Nephew and friend ~21 at the time. We hang at the bar, have a few drinks - my nephew and friend proceed to have two long islands and a beer. They are hammered before we even sit down. So we get a table, the friend is being a goof and he and my nephew decide to go to the car for something. We are sitting next to the window to the exterior, my back is to the window. One of my buddies say "oh christ, what is that fool doing??" I turn around and I am staring right at his butthole on the glass. :| Of course, others beside our table saw it, and, while my nephew and friend are walking back in, our escargot arrives. I slap a snail on the garlic-type bread they give, and, the host comes over and promptly throws us all out with me leaving my tasty little helix pomatia on the table. I went back last night and the host didn't remember me - we had a great time. Manhattan, caesar and pepper steak. Need I say more? Clip it, zip it and keep the eye in the tousers there chief! Ya feel me ? read more

Not wanting to default to Izzy's (one of my favorite steakhouses) for my birthday dinner, I decided to try The Brazen Head. This place is easily missed if you do not know its exact location. No visible signs outside. Thank goodness for the GPS. The inside is tiny, hence, no reservations. First come first served basis, and seated only with your whole party present. Most of the tables only seat 4 people, with perhaps 1 or 2 tables for party of 6. So definitely not good for bigger groups. The atmosphere is somewhat strange to me. It is very dark inside. The only source of lighting in the dining area is the orange glows from dim table lamps. I'm used to small, dark places being intimate. But this is not the case at all. So noisy. For appetizer, we ordered crab cakes and apple&pear salad. The crab cakes were overcooked and bland. Dipping it into the mayonnaise made it a bit more enjoyable. The salad on the other hand, delicious! Tossed in light vinaigrette and topped with gorgonzola, apples & pears. Yum! I was eyeing the New York steak on the menu, but my sister wanted it instead. So I opted for the ribeye. Here are my thoughts about the 4 entrees my family ordered: 1) Boneless ribeye steak. Plain. The herb butter did not help with the lack of flavor. Also, I had asked for medium rare but it seemed slightly overcooked. 2) New York steak. While I enjoyed this one more out of the 2 steaks, I was not very impressed. The pepper sauce was delicious, however, the steak itself also lacked flavor. 3) Veal picatta. Delicious! Served with a lemon&caper sauce. So tender and beautifully cooked. 4) Salmon filet. Also delicious! Lightly seasoned with a great crispy crust outside, moist and juicy inside. Yum Yum! For my birthday dessert, I had a slice of chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream. The chocolate cake was rich&moist but not too sweet. Eating it with the ice cream was like heaven! All in all, it was a great dinner. A bit disappointed about the steaks. I had chosen this place based on the raving reviews about the steaks. Steaks aside, food was delicious. Our waitress was great. The manager was awesome. We all left stuffed&happy! =D read more
