Unlike in the US where you can get dinner at 5pm, a lot of places in Rome don't open until 7:30 or 8pm (it was 8pm for L'Arcangelo). It was full shortly after opening, so make sure you get a reservation. They do have a fixed menu option for €60 a person, but we opted for a la carte so that we could choose exactly what we wanted. Pastas are on the more expensive side compared to some other local places - around €15 each. Secondis are in the €23-25 range. When you sit down, you notice all the tables have toy cars on them - turns out it's because the chef wants people to think of their childhoods when they eat his food, which I thought was cute. The wine list has a good number of Italian bottles. Since we were in Rome (Lazio), we opted for a bottle of Cesanese. Amuse: - Bread: served warm, reasonably salted - better than most of the dry/unsalted bread we've had in Italy - Pumpkin soup with coffee, anchovy oil, bread: it was a nice surprise to have an amuse Food: - Lesso e Concia: Roman Jewish chicken meatballs. These were super tender, flavorful, with Parmesan crisps and fried vegetables, over an herb green sauce. These were surprisingly great. I would get these again - Tagliatelle: with a garofalato sauce (beef, garlic, onion, lard). Great flavor on the sauce. - Gnocchi: amatriciana - red sauce, pancetta. The texture was more pillowy, and the pork had a weird gaminess to it. I got it because it was a dish many reviews and articles talked about, but I think it's just not my style - Vegetables: cabbage, peas, and chicory. A little oily but good in flavor, and I needed some greens - Baccala: with crushed peppers and tomato sauce. The cod was a bit fishy, and it's a shame the tomato sauce wasn't warm, but overall it was a pretty solid dish with a bonus of some kale I ended up pretty full. We started off great with the chicken meatballs, but then I think most other dishes aside from the tagliatelle just weren't my style - they weren't bad but just not to my tastes ? I like that it's located farther from the old town tourist areas and has more of a neighborhood feel. Come with a reservation or come at 10pm when tables open up on a weekday. Note: there's also a 15% gratuity included in your bill. Credit cards accepted. The owner wasn't particularly friendly - when we walked in saying we had a reservation, we got some annoyed sounding Italian discussion between her and the waitress. However, as for our waitress, service was great - she was way more friendly than most other servers we've encountered in Italy, and her English was really good. The other person helping out with the dishes and silverware was very nice, too.

Located in an outer neighborhood (you can take a bus from Pizazza Venezia to within a couple of blocks of the restaurant), we had a late reservation but entered to find the comfortable main rooms still active and lively. When our waiter realized we spoke English, he sought out the owner who helped us navigate the large menu of choices and with his encouragement, we made a meal of primarily the restaurant's starters. We had crudos and tartares, raw clams, and plates of fish and vegetables. The food was extraordinary. Probably the best seafood I've ever had, and I grew up on the New England coast and now live in NYC -- I think I know fish. We also enjoyed a delicious Sardinian wine and ended the meal with the owner's treat of two small glasses of a strawberry liqueur, house-made. Our only regret was that it was our last day in Rome and couldn't return to try more things on the menu. We appreciated the restaurant's friendliness, helpful service, and most of all, the superb fish and shellfish. If I can't travel to Sardinia, I can only hope to return soon to Rome so we can eat at Eleonara d'Arborea again.

Romans don't believe in eating dinner until well after sunset and it gets dark. I'm more of the "Early Bird Special" type. A casual atmosphere. I was overdressed wearing a sport coat and tie. Jeans and polo shirt was the norm. It's fair to say the focus was on food rather than decor. The three types of bread presented a challenge: it was so good I was worrying about leaving room for the all the courses in the tasting menu. I ordered the ten course tasting menu with wine pairings. The amuse bouche was excellent. Five bites of various things, including carbonara in an egg shell that was stellar. The first course was cuttlefish sliced thin like pasta in Marina sauce. It was good, but now a common fine dining dish in Rome. Next, scallops in chorizo sauce with chard. This was an outstanding dish! Mantis shrimp in broth followed. Also outstanding. This was followed by ricotta ravioli with mussels and mussel foam. It was an unusual but flavorful combination. The subsequent spaghettini and clams in almond milk was also outstanding. I'm running out of superlatives. Fagotelli came next, stuffed with pork belly and in a broth with apples was quite good. But, nothing I've had anywhere can compare with Fagotelli La Pergola, which is in a class by itself. Squid was the first main course. It was good and cooked perfectly. But, I'm not a big fan of squid/calamari/cuttlefish. The next dish was pork belly or some other fatty cut of pork that I didn't care for, but this was a matter of personal taste not preparation. Dessert was a cinnamon cream with raisins and frozen apples and grapes. It was light but tasty. Petite Fours and cotton candy to conclude. Only one of the wine pairings was a palpable miss, but all of the wines were from small, iconoclastic sources. Only the Sangiovese seemed typical of the varietals. Service was impeccable throughout, even after the restaurant filled up a couple hours after I arrived. But, did seem to tail off towards the end. One complaint as so often occurs: after dessert, offer me coffee or offer me the bill. Don't make we wait 15 minutes for one or the other. The dessert was ricotta cheese with pear gel and chocolate crumbles and it had the right amount of texture and sweetness, not being overly sweet.
