Bathrooms are "undesignated", and I quite like it like that - got that we all human, doesn't matter what you identify as. Might offend some people. Super casual, people are great - LGBTQ or not!

Located in the Melrose part…read moreof Phoenix, I checked out Bar 1912 after having dinner at Valentine (hint, hint: the speakeasy is located inside the restaurant). They have a small parking lot, but it's free and I was able to find a spot on a Friday evening. Ambiance (2.5/5): Speakeasies are known for their sophistication and for their hidden entry. Bar 1912 isn't much of a mystery. There are two entry points. Either a door in the back of the restaurant or a hallway inside the restaurant that's relatively easy to find as there isn't a door or anything in between the restaurant and the speakeasy. Our waiter took us there after our meal. Bar 1912 is nice, but just about average in terms of ambiance compared to other speakeasies. Part of the reason is that it's very loud (seats 30 people or so) and all of the seating at the bar are back-less bar stools (which I personally hate due to my back). I would have preferred to sit on the various couches/sofas next to the bar. Service (4.5/5): Friendly, attentive service. Exactly what you hope for when you're grabbing a drink (especially when they take a little longer to make due to their sophistication). You're provided with water without asking which is always a nice touch. I had to grab the bartender's attention once or twice, but outside of that, a job well done. Food (N/A); Since I had dinner at Valentine prior, I skipped food here. They have a small menu consisting mostly of appetizers (many, but not all, which are offered at Valentine). One option which isn't at Valentine, but which piqued my interest is the Sonoran hot dog. Had I been hungry, it would've been a no brainer. They have four or so desserts on the menu, and I had room for dessert, but none of them seemed appetizing. Drinks (4/5): When I'm at a speakeasy, I look for creativity and an interesting blend of ingredients. You certainly have that here. There's a focus on Native American and Hispanic influences here, which is pretty cool, and fitting since we're in Phoenix and everything. I tried two cocktails, one was a hit and one was a miss. I'm pretty flexible when it comes to cocktails, and I know what I like, so I rarely miss. Unfortunately, it happened here. With that being said, I tried some liqueurs I had never had before which is awesome. And I enjoyed the cocktail menu. This isn't the type of spot you'll find an Espresso Martini...thankfully. With a couple of tweaks, Bar 1912 could be in line with some of my favorite speakeasies in town.

Boycott Bar is hands down one of the most welcoming and inclusive spots in town! From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with a warm, friendly atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The drinks are always on point--solid, well-made, and exactly what you need for a great night out. Shoutout to Nic, Joselyn, Jody, and Faith for their exceptional service! They are all incredibly friendly, attentive, and know how to keep the good vibes going. You can tell they genuinely care about their customers and love what they do. I've been a patron to boycott for a couple months and the atmosphere is by far one that welcomes ALL walks of life with no prejudice. They have a variety of events throughout the year and theme nights all week long. I love Karaoke Tuesday nights. From the moment we walk in we get a personal warm greeting from the owner and my favorite bartender, Jayna to the KJ/host who seems to bring the bar together whether in harmony ( or almost harmony, not everyone has talent but we all try, lol), or by offering a variety of songs for all genres. I don't make it out much these days but when I do I come to boycottt from East Mesa and it's proved worth it every time. So if anyone is looking for a good time this is a fun place for ALL. I'm from west side phx n grew up wild. When i walked into this spot, the LAST thing i thought was "this is a gay bar" -- i was welcomed with mad love from the owner Audrey (which is now FAMILY) and her employees. Boycott rocks! Whether you are male, female, gay, straight, or anything else - you will always feel welcome there. The staff are inviting and you will find yourself feeling just as important as the regulars. What better feeling than to make your second visit ever and be recognized and remembered like it was yesterday? I have been to many events there - Sunday Karaoke, Tues Open Mike, Wed Comedy Night, Thursday Drag Show night, Etc... and have never been dissapointed. Whether it is chill or poppin', there is always a good time to be had there. A surprise bachelor ette party was thrown for me there and the staff made me feel really special. I was told about this place from people I met at another bar. I was told it's fun and friendly and on Tuesday they give free tacos with each drink. I decided to check it out and I was not misinformed. This place is friendly, inclusive, fun, and so refreshingly unpretentious. The owner Audrey was welcoming and the tacos were rather good! The bartender was very sweet and kind. The karaoke is great! The sound and selection are very good and the KJ, Tim, was friendly and was about the fun of singing, as it should be. Let me start by saying we are two gay males in our 30s traveling before the year is over. We chose Phoenix because of the distance from Los Angekes where we reside. We went to several gay bars Phoenix area and by far Boycott bar is one of the best Cali vibe bars we went to. The bartender Ruth Marie was amazing. Very friendly. And will hold a conversation. We went during the day and the bar is near other gay bars in the area. BOYCOTT BEING A LESBIAN BAR IS HIGHLY RECOMENDED! they have a game room. The drinks are cheap and strong. Speaking as a straight Male Marine. This place rocks. Yes, it's a lesbian bar. But it's an everyone bar too. I've never had my ass grabbed so many times as I did standing by the bar. Who knew the power of that much Merlot?!? The Jameson was strong and flowing. Bartenders were crazy friendly and helped keep us from hitting on the wrong " woman". DJ has never seen " Leon the Professional" so I don't trust her. But she spun sick jams and took request if you sent it thru a hot blonde. All and all a solid 9.5 read more

So great to find the best new bar on Melrose! Came Friday night and this place is packed with a great crowd and good music. The staff is super friendly and you can tell they like working here because they make their job look fun! Loved that they have a cool spot to chill with pool tables in the patio area and a big dance floor too. My first time at Boycott... and one of my first experiences in Phoenix! My friends and I went on a Sunday night, but we had an amazing time. There are far better venues in the area that don't operate this way. I decided to try 11:11 since it's only about 7 minutes from where I live. I'm a local and thought I'd check it out. Unfortunately, from the moment we arrived it felt like a complete hustle from start to finish. Right away the security guards were rude and barely checking anyone, which honestly made me feel uneasy. Ironically, the same security that barely checks people will gladly let someone slide in if they slip them $20 or $40. Then you get to the cashier, and that's where the pricing circus starts. She was literally pulling prices out of thin air charging anywhere from $20 to $45 for entry or re-entry, even when people had stamps or were on the list. The re-entry situation was another red flag. Security told us clearly that if we had a stamp we could leave and come back. When we returned, suddenly they tried charging $25-$45 to get back in. Even people who had tables or were on the guest list were being asked for money. I watched security let people in if they slipped them cash while others were pushed to the cashier to pay whatever random price they decided at that moment. Once inside, the place is extremely cramped. Most of the dance floor is taken up by oversized bottle service tables, so there's barely any room to actually dance. On top of that, people were openly smoking weed inside and outside, so there was really no escaping the smoke. The bartenders had very catty attitudes toward customers and even toward each other. The pricing also seemed to depend on who was serving you. I ordered a simple vodka soda and was charged $16, then later ordered the exact same drink from another bartender and she charged me $14. Same drink, different price. The bottle service situation was just as shady. The bottle girls come around acting like they're helping your table, but they'll take shots from the bottle, pour uneven drinks, and constantly push more bottles. It felt less like service and more like a hustle to keep people spending. At that point it became clear that everyone was trying to get money out of you, security outside, the cashier at the door, bartenders at the bar, and bottle girls at the tables. I actually took pictures and videos that night documenting what was happening, because it was that obvious. I won't be going back.
