I LOVE this place. I'm not vegan. Not even a little vegan. That said. This is a top 5 pizza spot for me in Portland. The Jimmy Pesto is one of my very favorite foods from anyplace. The mix of flavors is SO GOOD. The pesto and the honey and the garlic... all of the flavors mix together to be so freaking good. If anything, the cheese is the weak point. It can be a little sticky/gummy on your teeth - but in no way stops the pizza from being epic. I've had bites of other pies, and they're good, but THIS ONE makes me so happy. I go back as often as I can. The Zipper itself is a pretty cool location. The drinks from the bar are nice and there's an okay amount of seating. Things can fill up pretty fast in the Winter months or super nice Summer days - so seating can be limited.

Located in the Zipper, this vegan gem is a must-try! I visited with two friends, one vegetarian and the other egg-free and dairy-free. Detroit-style pizza isn't usually my favorite, but Boxcar Pizza has completely changed my mind! Honestly, if I hadn't known it was vegan beforehand, I wouldn't have guessed. We ordered a variety of dishes to share: the Ape Dos Mil (margerita-style pizza), the Bianca (white pizza), Buffalo Wings, and a Kale Caesar Salad. I have to admit, I was most excited about the Bianca, and the Ape Dos Mil was my least anticipated choice. The Ape Dos Mil ended up being my absolute favorite thing we ordered. My mouth actually waters just thinking about it. The sourdough crust was perfectly chewy with just the right amount of crispy crunch. The Buffalo wings were really good, with a fantastic sauce. Even the Kale Caesar salad was top-notch.

Top notch pizza! The flavors are so punchy and vibrant. The crust is crunchy, chewy, and pillowy all at the same time. 1,000 bonus points for being all vegan. If you've not vegan, don't let it deter you! My friends who aren't actually recommended this place to us. Scouts honor, you're in for a real treat! I love the communal dining area as well. It's a great spot to grab lunch or dinner and have a few different restaurant options for everyone to enjoy.

Enjoyed the vibes and food at Boxcar pizza! The menu is fully vegan with gluten free crust options as well. I'm not going to say the vegan sausage tastes exactly like real meat, but even as a non-vegan I thoroughly enjoyed the food. I tried the Bianca & my partner got the Viktor Vaughn (gf version). As someone with a nut allergy I was surprised at how good their vegan cheese was given that it was nut free (the mozzarella sticks are the only things with nuts!). You order at a little kiosk and they have outdoor seating that is shared among the different food vendors in the building. It is definitely on the spendier end (runs around $18-$20+ for a pizza that feeds 1-2 people) but I do think that is pretty standard for a fully vegan menu with gf options.

**Boxcar Pizza Soars: A Portland Masterpiece of Dough, Fire, and Flavor** PORTLAND, Ore. -- In a city that takes its pizza seriously, **Boxcar Pizza** isn't just competing--it's rewriting the rules. Tucked away in a vibrant corner of Portland's culinary landscape, this unassuming spot delivers pies that are equal parts creative and crave-worthy, with a wood-fired finesse that leaves no doubt: This is one of the best pizzerias in America. The **Head On Collision** is the kind of pizza that sparks obsession. A perfect marriage of chewy, blistered crust and bold toppings--spicy soppressata, honey that crackles into caramelized gold under the heat, and creamy stracciatella that cools the fire--it's a symphony of contrasts. Each bite is a thrill ride, balancing heat, sweetness, and richness with the precision of a chef who knows exactly what they're doing. Then there's the **Bacon Damn Sure**, a pie that elevates simplicity to brilliance. Smoky "bacon", caramelized onions, and a swirl of béchamel meld into something greater than the sum of its parts, while the crust--airy at the edges, crisp beneath--proves Boxcar's dough game is untouchable. This isn't just pizza; it's craftsmanship. Even the classics shine. The margherita, with its vibrant tomato sauce and milky fresh mozzarella, is a testament to the power of perfect execution. But Boxcar's true magic lies in its willingness to take risks, turning each pie into a conversation piece without ever sacrificing flavor for novelty. The space itself--rustic, warm, buzzing with energy--feels like the ideal setting for this kind of culinary alchemy. Servers move with the ease of people who know they're serving something special, and the aroma of wood smoke and melting cheese wraps around you like an invitation to stay all night. Boxcar Pizza isn't just a meal; it's an event. With every slice, it makes the case that Portland's pizza scene isn't just keeping up with the giants--it's setting the pace.

Picked up a to go order. I am vegan and this was the #1 place I wanted to stop at in Portland-- it did not disappoint. I got the Bianca and the Bacon Damn Sure. Being from Michigan, the Detroit-style pizza tasted just like home. One piece was so filling! The ricotta and the sausage on the Bianca were absolute perfection. The Bacon Damn Sure was almost equally as good, with the perfect amount of kick from the jalapenos. The building was very cute, and I love the dog logo. I was only in the area for 5 days and was so close to going back for another pizza to take home, but couldn't quite make it happen. I will absolutely be going back if I'm ever in the area again!

Outside patio- some covered some not! Lovely!

Believe the hype. The thick crust (and I had the gluten free Bianca ) was worth it. The wings have gluten but I brought them home for my partner where they were all devoured. Loved the set up - like a food cart pod without the food carts: windows or small store fronts where you can get a variety of food including this amazing pizza. The pay dirt bar has some seating otherwise enjoy the open air, covered patio with your pup and friends - covid-safe! I hope they heat this during the winter as I would love to come back and enjoy a more open air option then, too! Yum! Go get the pizza! Now Boxcar is ahead of Ruse's Crust Collective for me in terms of a great vegan (and gf if you want) pizza! Staff at Boxcar were also friendly and helpful despite being busy!

Picked up food from Boxcar Pizza and the pizza looks great and they are having a lunch special (a side and a can of beer for 6.50.

Really cool vegan pizza spot. I ordered the lunch special + beer $8 (does have a + root beer soda option $6.50) and the 6pc wings. Pizza was pretty much a cheese deep dish style. The crust was fluffy and I enjoyed every bite. I was really interested in the wings. They were absolutely delicious and I think they were made using jackfruit because they pulled apart like jackfruit. Definitely something I'd eat often and will forever be chasing this wings.

Obsessed with the vegan pizza here. Very flavorful. The wings were also good but very chewy. Great flavors. Make sure to order a side of ranch. There's also a video game that you can play while waiting for the food. Boxcar is also located inside a beer haul with other restaurants too.

    Marissa L.

Good spot for vegan Detroit-style pizza and sides. We split all three slices that were offered that day, and also got sides of mozzarella sticks and a kale salad with fried chicken added on. While the pizza and mozzarella sticks were very good, my favorite thing there was the salad, which was one of the best-executed kale salads I've had in a long time (and the chicken topping was excellent too). Limited parking in the area, but there's both counter seating at Boxcar and tables in the rest of the food hall, which was helpful.

Since it was my first time, I asked the staff for a recommendation. They suggested the bibimbap and mentioned it was on the spicy side, which I was totally okay with. It had so many different flavors and textures, and somehow they all worked perfectly together. The waiter also suggested mixing everything together before taking the first bite, which I really appreciated. The ambiance was super cute, with a cozy little tiki-bar vibe inside, and they also have a few outdoor tables. The service was exceptional throughout. This is an easy 5-star review from me.

Watch in-depth video breakdown here…read morehttps://youtu.be/2LsMS2vxzRU?is=U5MfItnpo97tUvuq Dirty Lettuce had me questioning whether I was really in Portland or somehow got transported back down South. I'll admit, I came into this place with a slight bias. I'm from the South, and maybe it's ignorant, but when I hear "soul food," I automatically think of the South. I grew up around soul food. I know what good collard greens taste like. I know what good mac & cheese tastes like. So when I heard people on TikTok raving about a vegan soul food restaurant in Portland, Oregon, part of me was thinking: "Soul food? In Portland? How good could it really be?" Well... Dirty Lettuce shut me up pretty quickly. I originally found this place while searching TikTok for vegan restaurants in Portland. Dirty Lettuce kept coming up, and people especially hyped up the fried chicken and BBQ ribs, so I had to see for myself. I ordered the fried chicken meal with collard greens and mac & cheese -- two sides I take VERY seriously. The fried chicken was incredible. The seasoning and batter reminded me of some kind of combination between KFC and Popeyes, while the inside stayed moist and tender. At certain points I genuinely forgot I was eating vegan chicken. It tasted and felt like I was eating a Southern fried chicken plate somewhere in Mississippi or Alabama. Then came the collard greens. Man... These greens tasted like somebody's grandma was in the kitchen cooking Thanksgiving dinner. They serve them in a bowl with plenty of pot liquor, so initially I thought they might be a little watery. Nope. That broth was PACKED with flavor. It was almost like a collard-green soup, and I mean that as a compliment. The greens and the broth complemented each other perfectly. And the mac & cheese? A1. Creamy, rich, flavorful, with this subtle smoky taste that I wasn't expecting. I don't know exactly what they did to it, but whatever they did -- KEEP DOING IT. I also tried the BBQ ribs. They were good, although they were probably my least favorite item compared with everything else. But that's almost unfair because the chicken, greens and mac & cheese set the bar ridiculously high. I also went into the ribs with huge expectations after hearing people hype them up on TikTok, and I'm not really a ribs guy to begin with. So take my opinion there with a grain of salt. They were still good. My one area for improvement would be customer service. The woman who took my order wasn't rude or anything, but I personally would have appreciated a warmer greeting and more inviting energy. I'm very big on customer service, and I think the person at the front counter sets the tone for the entire experience. Maybe she was just having an off day -- we all have them -- but that was really the only part of my visit that didn't match the quality and energy of the food. The restaurant itself is small, clean and has some really cool artwork on the walls. It has a nice atmosphere without trying to be anything overly fancy. But the FOOD is the story here. At one point during my meal, I remembered that Black people make up a relatively small percentage of Oregon's population, and I became convinced somebody from that percentage had to be back there in that kitchen cooking. Because there was no way these greens were tasting this close to something my grandma would have made on Thanksgiving. I came in skeptical. I left thoroughly impressed. Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, or eat meat every day of your life, I'd recommend trying Dirty Lettuce. And if you're from the South and you're skeptical about getting legitimate soul food in Portland like I was? Go ahead and try it. It legitimately reminded me of a Southern Sunday plate from somebody's mama's kitchen. Dirty Lettuce proved me wrong -- and I'm glad they did. Highly recommended. I am vegan while my friend is not and we had no struggle finding options that suited our needs. What stood out: Service: The staff was knowledgable and checked in on us frequently. Our food only took about 20 minutes to come out despite a busy dinner rush and we were offered chili flakes to spice up our curries. was incredibly welcoming and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed. Food: For the table, we ordered the samosas which were perfectly flaky and filled with fresh veggies. I ordered the ruby garden non alcoholic beverage as well as the tofu curry with coconut rice. Every bite and drink of what I ordered tasted unique and made with intention. The samosas were incredible dipped into what tasted like a sweet and sour chili sauce. My tofu curry and coconut rice had a delightful blend of textures and tasted like no other curry I have ever had before. Ambiance: The atmosphere is so cozy with Burmese decor alongside dim lighting. It was my first time coming here, and I had a lot of questions about the menu to the point where I could feel myself becoming annoying (face palm). The gal taking my order was Jessi, she was so helpful, kind, knowledgeable, accommodating, and authentically friendly. I can't remember what it was that we shared a laugh about, but I walked away happy because of that type of simple interaction that restores your faith in humanity. I love chocolate and peanut butter together esp with coffee but their drink was inedible with an awful taste. Maybe they gave me almond butter by mistake. Woof I couldn't even force it down. The quesadilla was incredibly greasy and nothing like a quesadilla. The mouth feel of the walnut chorizo with the soft vegetables was weird / it felt gritty. The flavors fell as well. The only highlight was the salsa but I'm 90% sure it was salsa de welo which you can buy at a store. No one would finish my quesadillas at the table. Major miss for me.
