We happened upon Boxcar Betty's after an unsatisfying dinner elsewhere and stopped in for a "small" bite. We shared an order of tenders and fries and it hit the spot! Crispy fried chicken, tender on the inside, flavorful and tasty. And the crispiest fries I have ever had, ever, no question! I've only had BoxCar Betty's a few times from their original location in South Carolina. Management at the restaurant was friendly and greeted us at the entrance. We placed our order and sat down. Our order arrived fast and it was everything was perfect. Our group ordered three BoxCar sandwiches, and why would you eat anything else. Our food arrived hot and filled with pickles, spicy mayo, peach coleslaw, pimento cheese, and fried chicken. There are three protein choices of Fried Chicken, Grilled Chicken, or Pimiento Stuffed Portobello Mushroom cap that come in the four main sandwiches. I pass by this storefront every day on my way to work. It's located in the 2nd floor corridor of the Citibank building so a bit difficult to find if you don't know frequent though that corridor. If you take the Olgivie station trains, its the shop just before the sky bridge over Canal St. I have a fondness for chicken that is fried and biscuits. Put them together and we're pretty good friends. The biscuit didn't hold up too well (tad crumbly when squished together), but was quite tasty. I tried the chicken sandwich with some honey and their buffalo sauce. The buffalo sauce was a bit lighter than what I was expecting. I think there was a squirt of lemon which was quite pleasing since it's not as harsh as vinegar. The sweetness of the honey countered well with the acid in the buffalo. The last sandwich place here didn't do so well. I sure hope BB's lasts a lot longer! Yay! I love chicken sandwich places! I came by for lunch and was really surprised to see how busy it was. You order at the front and kind of shimmy along with the rest of the line as your order is being made and called out. I ordered the Boxcar and it was delicious! Took my daughter since we were both craving chicken sandwiches. We got one boxcar and one betty with some fries. Not knowing what to expect they both came out piping hot and fresh. We both bit in to our sandwiches and gave the knowing nod of "WHOA this is excellent!" to each other. We then tried each others and couldn't decide which one we liked better. The peach on the betty is not too overpowering, the pimento adds a surprise flavor element that works really well. The buns were fluffy and delicious. Boxcar Betty was so clean and neat. The staff was accommodating. There are so many customers inside so I wait outside. They are too strict in health protocol due to covid. They block the entrance with a red ribbon sign so costumes are not allowed to . When it's their turn and some people go outside, staff will guide them to enter. I ordered Betty Chicken Sandwich and Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. They have veggies on it so I order it because I want my burger to have a vegetable. Burger and vegetables are the perfect combo for me. You can taste the freshness of the vegetable and the flavor and crunchiness of the chicken. They suggested to me their fried pickles. And I didn't know that pickles can be cooked fried. I don't like pickles but I wanna try their fried pickles so I included it in my order. It tastes so good, especially with spicy mayo. I'm glad that I came here. Boxcar Betty's roots are from South Carolina, and this place features primarily fried chicken sandwiches on a bun or a breakfast biscuit. I was passing by today and was stunned to see no line at all, so I decided to finally try this place. I ordered the Chicken "Not So Waffle" Sandwich (that's a goofy name) to go, and it came out in only a few minutes. The two staff members that I encountered were both courteous. I brought my sandwich back to the office, and fortunately the chicken still had a bit of crunch to it. The toppings of bacon jam, maple syrup, pimiento cheese, and tomato resulted in a very satisfying savory and sweet flavor. Although I only had the chicken sandwich, the menu includes intriguing items like fries, fried pickles, fried green tomatoes, peach coleslaw, and pecan pie in a cup. Even though the area is saturated with all different types of lunch options, Boxcar Betty's is a pretty solid addition, and has quickly snuck into my regular lunch rotation. Location: It's not located in the main Ogilvie food court but rather upstairs and to the left, right before the bridge to Two North Riverside Plaza. Menu: Despite their limited menu, everything they offered was money. They basically had 3 different variations of chicken sandwiches, and then this particular location also offered a few different types of breakfast biscuits as well. Pricewise, it's pretty average for the area...a sandwich and fries will run you about $10. I ordered the Not-So-Waffle sandwich, which had bacon jam, pimiento cheese, and maple syrup. The overall flavor was definitely on the sweeter side, but I thought it worked well with the other extremely salty elements. The bacon jam was basically a mound of finely minced bacon bits, in a very thick, but spreadable form. The taste packed a punch, and further added a salty/smokey burst to every bite. The pimiento cheese added even more saltiness on the bottom bun, along with a very sharp cheddar taste. The chicken was ultimately the make or break element of this sandwich, and I really liked it. I'm not sure if it was only this specific sandwich because of the maple syrup, but the breading was a little on the light side. Its texture was a little soggy, and lacked the big crunch of a typical breaded chicken patty. The seasoning was on point though, and the meat itself was ultra tender and juicy. You could really tell its been soaking in brine. Flavor penetrated to the core. I didn't really mind light breading either, because the bun was also really soft, and every layer just melted together for every bite. The fries were awesome, with a pretty generous portion too. Hand-cut, and extra crispy, with the freedom to ask for whatever sauces you want. They were happy to hook me up with spicy mayo, ranch, and sweet chili sauces. I definitely liked that. Overall, in a sea full of average lunch spots charging a city premium, Boxcar Betty's is one of the few places that actually seems worth it. read more

This is a new addition to Ogilvie transportation center's food option (as of this writing, July 2018). Yaaaas - finally a great new addition to the area!! I was pretty impressed for it being a fast food spot. I ordered the "Not So Waffle" sandwich and it was GOOD! The chicken was crispy and sooo juicy. I was worried that it would be soggy and drenched in maple syrup, but it wasn't, it was the perfect amount of sweetness. And I loved the taste of the bacon jam. I also had a side of fries and they were well seasoned. Then to add to my meal, I had to have a sweet tea :) They were also giving out different sauces to try - buffalo, honey mustard, ranch, chipotle mayo and bbq. I didn't really feel the need to add sauces to the sandwich, so I used it as dipping for the fries. Overall I enjoyed the food and can't wait to come back - especially to try the sweet potato fries because they weren't available yet. I came here during its first week. with a line out the door. I'm thankful for there being a new quality restaurant open in Ogilvie, and I was excited when I heard it'd be a fried chicken sandwich spot. Who doesn't like fried chicken? The lines were a bit bananas at first, but they've calmed down since. The service is relatively good, though their system needs some work. I like that they have a large variety of sauces you can ask for, but almost every time I've asked for a sauce that they had to go to the kitchen for, they'd forget about it. It's nice that the people calling out orders are friendly and have conversations with customers, but sometimes they lose track of things. The sauces go well with the large amount of fries you get with an order. It looks pricy on the menu, but one order is perfect for two people. They're pretty tasty too. The chicken sandwiches are alright. You can tell from the pictures people post that the breading is kind of light. Little texture, and little flavor. At least the meat under it is cooked well and juicy. I've tried all three of their main varieties and they're all decent. The sandwiches get a bit sloppy, but that's because they're all loaded with toppings. The signature Boxcar has unique ingredients and the best balance of them all, so I'd go with that one. Overall Betty's is worth a visit if you work nearby. Kind of wish the chicken was a bit more of a standout, but it's a decent choice for your workday lunch. Their current locations: Charleston and Summerville, SC combined population size does not even come close to Chicago's. So no one can blame their long line during their soft open to adjust in wait times. Yes, there are lines currently but it is worth it. Boxcar Betty's signature fried chicken sandwich Boxcar takes a locally sourced chicken breast brined overnight combined with pimiento cheese, peach coleslaw, house pickles, and spicy mayo. Their Chicken "Not So Waffle" takes a sweeter approach with bacon jam, maple syrup, and pimiento cheese. Because of their soft open, their full menu were not available however if their first two sandwiches taste tested were any indication on what is to come. I would say, "bring it on!" Other add-ons that will be available upon full open: Kentucky beer cheese, agave buttermilk, and pimiento cheese stuffed mushrooms. Sides do not fall short. Boxcar Betty's fries are addicting and perfectly fried. I do look forward to their fried pickles and fried green tomatoes. Decor is good but not great. The space only holds 22 seats. For being in Ogilvie, grab and go is probably more expected. Service is great. For being under a soft open for a week shows they are learning quick. Expect Boxcar Betty's first restaurant outside the Charleston, SC area to do well as long as they keep providing new items or add-ons to keep folks coming back. Visited Boxcar Betty's soon after they opened and there was already a line out of the restaurant and down the hall. I figured there must be something good inside, so of course I waited (plus I was meeting someone).. The line moved pretty quickly, but the order pickup was somewhat confusing. You can't really go to your seat and wait because you can't hear your order number being called - you basically have to wait in line in order until your food comes up. This isn't an issue, just confusing for the first time visitor. The spicy mayo is SPICY...but tasty. I liked my sandwich (the buffalo one) and I thought it was nice to provide the buffalo sauce on the side so that I didn't burn my mouth too badly. I was able to get a bunch of the sauces on the side as well when I picked up my order, and they are worth trying. Very small restaurant, so there isn't much room to sit, so this may be more of a to-go spot, but the food was good...If you take it to go, your sandwich bottom might be a bit soggy, but that's better to soak up all of the deliciousness. The best sandwich and best shake i have ever had, hands down. A friend and I came here and we both loved it. The chicken and not waffle sandwich was perfectly balanced between a mound of maple syrup soaked bacon bits, the tender chicken with crumbly breading, and whatever the frick that cheese and tomato combo was. It maintained an even internal temperature somehow so that by the time i got to the middle, the outsides were still hot but the inside wasn't too hot to eat. Very messy but there's napkins for that. The pecan pie milkshake: i cannot remember if I even like pecan pie but i love milkshakes and this one is perfect. Sooooo thick, sweet but not too sweet, not too crunchy or chunky, evenly blended. The place has potential but they're not there yet. I ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich (which had no buffalo sauce, the "boxcar" & an order of "fried pickles". The buffalo chicken sandwich had no flavor at all. The boxcar, along with the alleged peach slaw & pimento cheese) was decent enough but there's plenty other places that are far superior to this place. The fried pickles were good but I think you can't mess up fried pickles. It's on the 2nd floor of the Ogilvie station towards the "east" end of the building. The lunch sandwich (the Boxcar) is a solid option, but the breakfast sandwich (the fried chicken, cheddar, and egg biscuit) is by far my favorite item. We've also used Boxcar for catering and they do a great job.
