I haven't had Mr Submarines in years! Maybe 8 years! And while it isnt exactly what I remember, it was still pretty good. The appearance out the outside looks very clean and inviting with a glass window to see into the kitchen. I got there around 1145 on a Thursday and only two people were in line. By the time I ordered, the line was at 12 people. But they get your food out to you very quickly. I ordered my food and the women were so accommodating and polite to me especially when I had questions. I ordered the Value meal #2 with a 7in sub, chips and a Dr Pepper soda as well as a cream of chicken soup. The sub was so fresh with crispy lettuce, their sub sauce and their cheese which is a blend of white American cheddar and Swiss, ugh I have missed this place! The crema of chicken was a little saltier than I'd like but still very good. Overall a great place! Highly recommend! read more

Last week I had the opportunity to go to Mr. submarine for lunch while I was working in the office. I have been going here for lunch ever since I moved to Chicago and I can say this is the closest sandwich place. I've been able to find similar to the bodegas in New York. The sandwiches taste amazing and they are reasonably priced especially for a store in the loop area. I always get the turkey sub on a hero and I can say that you definitely get your moneys worth for the size. Can't speak on ambiance or service as I ordered from Uber Eats. Noticed Uber eats had a BOGO for Mr. Submarine, so I got BOGO from Mr. Submarine. Ordered the roast beef because that was the vibe of the day, and the vibe of the day was the right choice on this day because the sandwich met my expectations. my coworker, who's really into Arby's (which should be illegal), recommended Mr. Submarine. I should've known what I was in for. Here's how it went down. First off, the cashier was fantastic--super friendly and welcoming. The sub? It arrived almost instantly, like they had it ready before I even ordered. And at $9.20 for a king-sized sub, it was a bargain. But let's talk about the sub itself. I had seen pictures of their ham beforehand, and it looked iffy. Spoiler: it was even worse in person. Place was pretty much empty when I came. It's a diner theme with red, black and white everywhere. The place isn't spotless, but cleaner than places like this typically are. There's old school ceiling fans helping circulate the air conditioning so it feels great inside. They actually have a good amount of seating as well so you know this place has probably been around forever. The menu misses some key items they have at other franchises like a gyro cheeseburger. Instead they just have a "steakburger" which I'm assuming is chopped steak. I settled for a gyro sub. Shortly after sitting down I heard what sounded like a microwave start up the start buzzing which is never good. My gyro sub was ready about two minutes later for a total of about 3-4 minutes to make which if you know how to cook is scary. They definitely microwaved the meat. The sandwich was just ok. Nothing really stood out. The gyro meat had some salty patches and then some black peppery patches. To be honest I thought the entire thing would be low-grade salty meat on the verge of expiring, but they surpassed expectations. The sub featured tzatziki sauce, tomatoes and onions. The tzatziki sauce was not only watery, but barely noticeable which makes you miss that distinct taste. Price wise you're looking at $7.25 for a regular sub. If you're into quick, microwaved food then this is the place otherwise there's plenty of better spots. read more

To be honest, some other reviewer mentioned that after consuming the sandwich, they feel a little nauseous kind of weird because don't know if it was just power of suggestion, but I put oil and vinegar on the sub and I also felt a little queasy after bite into it, I'm not sure what it is, but nevertheless I can't say I totally recommend it. Sandwich was just ok, nothing special about. I had the Italian sub with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, Mayo, and the cold cuts. Great value and great food! I grew up with Mr. Sub and it is great to have a loop location. Have taken multiple coworkers here who love it.

I was scrolling along downtown on my lunch break looking for something good to eat. Bam smack to my surprise there was Mr. Submarine. I haven't eaten at this place in a long time. This use to be my go to place after a night out of partying with my friends. Actually, I prefer Mr. Submarine over Subway, Jimmy Johns and Potbelly. I had a ham & cheese sub with chips and a drink for like $6.00 and some change. You can't beat that price especially in downtown Chicago. During lunch hour the line was long but the staff moved quickly to make sure everyone in line was served and out the door. I love their bread it is so soft and fresh. The whole quality of a sub made freshly with just enough mayo, loads of meat, cheese etc it's good enough for me. Quick Service & Inexpensive lunch deals is a plus in my book. read more

Some reviewers have complained about the customer service, that it feels rushed or inhospitable, I have not experienced that before and actually enjoy how mechanical it can be. Some of us just want the sandwich, exactly how it comes, without additions or substitutions or questions, and that's it. The sandwiches themselves are just okay. I feel as if I could probably make something similar at home. I must say though that they do use good bread (Turano, I think), and some of the meats are Vienna. My husband went to get us two sandwiches today and the cashier's attitude was awful. He asked her a simple question (instead of two small pops, can he get one big one pop); as I did not want a pop so why waste it. Instead of giving a simple answer; maybe even pleasantly saying that is not an option. The cashier replied, "don't you see the sign says no substitutions!" I mean it's not what you say, but how you say it (Simple elementary school etiquette). We patronize this business often and this is not the first time, the cashier was rude with her response. I think I just forced myself to scarf down the worst sub of my life. I walked in and ordered the Mr Sub with everything on it on the recommendation of my manager. I took about 30-45 seconds for my sub to be prepared and it cost $3.11. There was no long line (surpise surprise). The meat tasted very bland and the cheese was very untasty. If it wasn't for the onions, there would have been no taste at all. I have gone to Mr. Submarine before and I don't remember it tasting that bad. I came across this place as I was walking home today day after work and have been wanting to try it - so I stopped over to grab a sandwich for lunch today and it was... just ok. Décor: There is not much to this place. It is small, has a handful of tables and is pretty much all business (order and leave, or stay and eat). Bathroom: not for customers Staff: They had three lines going and several sandwich makers in the back - all of who lead to EXTREMELY FAST SERVICE! I am being 100% honest when I say that they MOVE customers there. I waited in line for approx. 2mins before ordering. After I received my change I turned away, took two steps to the side to get out of the next persons way, turned back toward the counter and my cashier was yelling at me to take my sandwich. It's THAT fast. I couldn't believe it. Food: I had a Super Sub and it was just ok. Size was no joke, it had TONS of meat and was HUGE (length) but there was just something lacking about it. Maybe it needs mayo and mustard, maybe it was just too much meat (throwing off the whole sandwich ratio) but there was just something off about it. It tasted cheap, which leads me to... Value: This place is super cheap. You can easily spend at or below $10 and be totally full. However, the quality seems to reflect the price. Wow, this specific location has been around forever. I remember seeing this place as I walked down from the Washington/Wells Brown Line stop almost 15-years ago. The inside is very "retro" -- it doesn't seem they have renovated. The chairs, tables and even menu look old-school. But who cares? It adds to the vibe of this place. Yes, the bread is very chewy like what other reviewers said. Yes, the corned beef isn't the best in that it lacks texture and is made of cold cuts. Needed a quick bite before heading to German class (speaking German on an empty stomach, no thank you!) so I popped into Mr. Submarine right off the Washington/Wells el stop. It's been a very long time since a Mr. Sub stop (I used to frequent the one on Fullerton when I would donate blood at Lifesource)...so this seemed like an AOK, semi-local option for a fast meal. In and out within 3 minutes, a freshly made turkey sub with cheese, lettuce, tomato on still soft french bread (not easy to achieve at 5pm, I'd guess), and served sweetly by a girl and guy at the counter. Only complaint was that it was a bit on the heavy side, and was covered in oil at the bottom by the time I got to my destination a few blocks away. Next time I'd get it without the "sauce" and just get mustard/mayo, but that's my own personal preference. Oh, and all for $3.62. Can't beat the price for a downtown sandwich. read more
