Neighborhood favorite! Pastrami or the polish with fries!!! Long lines but they move fast

Argumentative that these are the best hot dogs in the city. But when I stand outside waiting for you to open an extra 20 minutes on top of standing in line, I've waisted my entire lunch break. I've only had them bookmarked for 10yrs. Lolbs! So I was in the area and I dropped in to get 2 deep fried polish. There was a line that moved quickly. You order, wait to pay while she's bagging it up and then you leave. Place is old and out dated, but the service was very family oriented and friendly. I noticed how people were speaking with the older cashier and she knew everyone and the ones she didn't know she was still like an old grandmother in the neighborhood. It was nice! Went in for a deep fried polish, which you have to pay extra for. I noticed that two women behind me in line received their food before me. I looked at the owner, she looked at me with her mouth opened but didn't say anything. I walked up, she said here is your order, what flavor pop? I got my food and left. When I got home, I had the wrong order, and she knew it and didn't say anything. Honor and good customer service goes a long way. read more

BEST Kosher beef hot dogs in Chicago area....assortment of relished. Habd cut fries are always hot and fresh. They also sell Italian beef, polish sausages and other itime! I was raised in Chicago and ALWAYS stop be to bring Michigan family and myself lots of kosher hot dogs. Manager is always friendly and that smile brightens my day every tine! read more

Food is excellent. Their fries are freshly cut, not frozen. Cost was reasonable and service was fast. They even had diet 7-up. Hole in the wall place but the food is beyond excellent. Scale of 1 to 10, i give them a 15. I was going to Dave when I was young at the age of 5 and I am 70. This is a winner. read more

I trekked all the way out to Dave's Red Hots for my first of many Chicago dogs and it was worth the trip. I got cash specifically for DRH, but I noticed they do take card now (with a minimum and a small fee). I was tempted to get a combo, or try the Italian beef as well, but I hadn't worked up enough of an appetite yet. I came just before noon, and am glad I did because it was fresh and thereafter was a steady stream of people. For $4.80 I got a red hot with everything on it, and more hand-cut fries than I could eat. It was a little tricky to get to the hot dog under all the french fries rolled up in the same paper with it, but I didn't drop a thing. The hot dog itself was perfect, snappy, and satisfying. I chatted with another lady outside who seemed surprised to see me, and wondered how I heard about and decided to come to Dave's Red Hots. She told me she's been eating it since she was a kid, and couldn't recommend another spot because she wouldn't go anywhere else. She also told me that yes, it has been owned for a long time, but the history is it was originally across the street under Jewish ownership, until it was bought and sold to the current family. They still use the same great hot dogs though, and haven't messed with a classic. read more

This place was fantastic! I ordered two hot dogs with mustard and onion, plus a diet 7-up. The dogs were hot and fries were perfect. The behind the counter service were 2 nice ladies and kept the line moving. The dark wood paneled interior was like a time warp to 1983; and these places are a great find in Chicago. Dave's has been on Chicago's west side for decades. It's one of those hot dog "joints" that the locals know about and probably raised their kids eating. Be warned... If you're a health nut this is NOT your place to eat. Don't be fooled by the outside of Dave's. Most people would probably think it's closed but the give-a-way is if the gate outside the front door is open or if cars are double parked out front on Roosevelt Rd. SERVICE Service is straight forward a single line where your order is taken and you wait. Usually there are three people working one on register, one taking care or fries and bagging and the cook working the hot dogs and polishes. Also don't forget they are CASH ONLY and there's no ATM inside. DINING Though there are seats and table inside most folks come here to grab their food and go back to work or wherever they're headed. Keep in mind this is neighborhood "joint". The hot dogs and polishes are Vienna Beef and a generous portion of fries is included. Drinks are the usual sodas (grape, orange, 7up, etc.) i haven't eaten any of the other menu items. ISSUES My only issue is Dave's like quite a few local eating establishments doesn't take any form of payment other than cash. They're not the only one (i.e. Al's Italian Beef on Taylor) which in this day and age makes no sense to me. Is it worth missing a sale over paying a nominal fee to a credit card processing company? Even individuals at Farmers Markets make it so you can swipe on their phone or tablet. Dave's gets 4 stars because it's good at what it's known for. read more

I drove all the way from Elk Grove Village to sample the hot links at Dave's and they did not disappoint! Just the fact that they have survived for over 80 years without changing the menu, is slightly short of amazing. I was only able to eat the hot dogs this time, but will try more of the menu at a later date. I could make a meal out of the fries alone - Excellent. They keep the prices very reasonable, also. Where can you get a combo meal for under $6.00 these days? Some of the booths are from the original restaurant. Five generations have worked at Dave's. Four generations are working there, currently. This place looks nothing like what it is. It's a hole in the wall dusty signage and gated windows. When you enter the place they have seating available for dining in. If this place wasn't recommended to me NEVER would I eat there. I'm a fan of a good kosher hot dog with nothing on it, just the dog and bread. The hot dogs at Dave's are cooked just right and when you bite them they crunch Wow what a dog. The fries are seasoned well and fresh cut and the serving size is more then enough to. If you are looking for a good inexpensive meal try the hot dog, polish or pastrami you won't be disappointed read more

I've been going to this place since the early 70's. I moved to the south suburbs and still think about them. When I was a kid my mom would get me a hotdog plain because that's how I eat my food. As I've gotten older I get myself a double hotdog plain. The fries are great also but I prefer my double plain. read more

Glad to see that we still have a few mom and pops restaurant left in our neighborhood. This is a place to go if you want that childhood memory tasted. This is my favorite place to get a polish with onions and mustard only please. Not only is it the BEST (Kosher beef) polish, the fresh cut fries are delicious and plentiful, enough to share but, you wouldn't want too. The owners are on site which says how much they care for their business. The Customer Service, unmatched. I love the big smile and hello, I'm greeted with upon approaching the counter, it feels good to be welcomed in such a way. This is a must have about twice a week for me. read more

Hands down the BEST place to get a Hot Dog on the West Side of Chicago. A community staple in the heart of the Lawndale neighborhood. I have been going here since I was a child and recently took my son there. The hand cut fries are just too good to put into words. I have been going to Dave's Hotdog since I was a kid growing up on the westside of Chicago, near roosevelt and st. louis. This place sells the best tasting hotdogs and hand cut fries. The hand cut fries are just.....delicious, lol! Yes this is a little store front in the hood type of place, but as we know the west side of Chicago in this area has been developing itself into a small shopping district where a movie theatre also sits as well to cater to the community. I now live on the far south side of Chicago sixty years past and still go to Dave's for​ lunch when ever I am on the westside.
