Apparently, one visit to Mimi's wasn't enough. I had to come back just to make sure the first time wasn't a fluke. It wasn't. And if a second visit doesn't make the point clear enough, hand me a hammer and I'll nail it down for you. The food here is phenomenal. I love the quaint feel of the restaurant. It's not too big and not too small. It has the personal, welcoming feeling of a mom-and-pop spot while still being nice enough to feel like a quality date-night destination. The first time I ate here, I enjoyed the food so much that I had to order more to take home. And somehow, even the food to go was just as scrumptious. There's something special about finding a restaurant that doesn't need to be flashy or over the top to impress you. Mimi's feels comfortable, the food delivers, and after two visits, I'm already looking forward to the next one. If you have the chance, go to this place and sample the wares. A friend was visiting Chicago and staying nearby, so we decided to meet for dinner. I picked Mimi's after seeing the menu and reading some of the positive reviews. We walked in after 6pm on a Wednesday evening and found the restaurant bustling. Luckily, there was an available table, so we didn't have to wait. The host greeted us upon entry and seated us promptly. The restaurant is small but it was comfortable. There aren't a lot of soft surfaces to absorb sound, so the restaurant is loud. On top of that, the music was too loud so we were practically yelling at each other while looking at the menu. We considered leaving and going elsewhere because of the noise level but decided against it after the staff turned down the music at our request. Restaurant staff should remember that people don't want to dine at the club. I think my friend ordered the skillet taco dip appetizer and I shared the grand royale platter with my sister. My friend liked the appetizer. He said it was flavorful with a hint of spice. The grand royale consists of catfish, wings, macaroni & cheese, and greens. We both liked the catfish, wings, and greens. The mac & cheese left something to be desired though. We each took one bite and pushed it aside. I don't even know how to describe it. We simply didn't like it. I didn't like the corn bread either but that's because I prefer sweet corn bread. This corn bread had a spicy kick to it. My sister thought it was good so take that for what it's worth. Overall, our first experience was okay. I wasn't blown away and probably wouldn't return if given the opportunity. I've had better catfish and greens elsewhere where the music volume doesn't need to be adjusted. I believe the bill was nearly $100 just for an appetizer and one platter. Easily one of the best meals we had in Chicago this trip. From the fried fish and salmon bites to the sides we had a flavor party going on. We had a frozen peach drink that the entire table ended up ordering. The only thing I wish was forget is the table size. They don't comfortably have space for more than 4 so we had to squeeze in. I stopped by this evening at 5. I had a resy for 545 and I was greeted and seated promptly. I read previous reviews before coming in and had my eyebrows raised, but I've had this restaurant on my radar for quite awhile now, back when it was a takeout spot. So today was their day! They didn't disappoint me. Our server Jamal was really nice and made us his cousins immediately. It did take them 10-15mins for a server to stop by. With that we ordered everything at once, not knowing how long things would take. We orderd drinks, shrimp scampi, cilantro lime wings, chicken Alfredo, beef short ribs with mashed potatoes, greens, and sautéed broccoli. Everything was freshly prepared and tasted great! So why a star loss?? Because they charge 18 or 19% gratuity charge and then the server requests a tip on zelle, cashapp, etc. THAT'S ABSURD! I can't stand places like this. My standard tip is 20%. But if you add a service fee dont ask me for nothing else! Wth! Definitely enjoyed my food, but I wouldn't be regularly because of that foolishness. I'm not a petty diner either, but that's insane. Ordered online for pick up. After watching a YouTube short about the place. It's a smaller establishment and there didn't seem to be a seat, if i had wanted to sit in. I don't know if they have reservations. So something to keep in mind. I ordered the Catfish with a side of greens and cornbread. The catfish was flavorful and cooked to order. You can ask for it hard but that's not my thing. They also have a hot honey version. The greens were good nice tang. The cornbread was dry. Had the flavor just on the dryer side. If I could rate 0, I would. Service was beyond slow. It took 30 mins to get drinks, over an hour to get food. No organization in how they served tables. We were seated first but serviced last. I made complaint and was offered $20 off an over $130 bill. I never got the Mac and cheese that went with my food. I saw the waiter get frustrated that I was voicing my concerns and I made sure to be polite. I was with my five year old and he was hungry. They didn't care. I seen him give my Mac and cheese to another table because he was frustrated with my complaints and I had already paid bill by time it was finally ready. Mimi's Craft Kitchen was probably my favorite spot that we tried while visiting Chicago. Shoutout to Patron Chris (on Instagram) for putting us on. I'm not sure if it's a hidden gem or not but I haven't seen this spot mentioned on social media a lot. It is teeny tiny so MAKE A RESERVATION before you go, you may not get seated without one. First of all that frozen peach sidecar needs to be added to every menu at every restaurant in America! It was really that good! It was sweet and strong and just so tasty. My whole table enjoyed their food and it hit even better the next day when we warmed it up for leftovers. I got roasted chicken with greens and Mac and cheese. That honey mango chutney glaze (or whatever it was) was FIRE and not to mention the meat fell right off the bone! The Mac and cheese was also fire! I tasted my home girl's salmon bites, again FIRE! Not to mention the portions were huge! My only critique would be on the greens. They weren't bad but it had an after taste to me like it was possibly cooked in beef broth, so it wasn't my favorite. o happy I finally had the chance to visit this restaurant. Let me start with the short ribs, and mashed potatoes -- AMAZING. When I say the meat falls off the bone, I mean it literally falls off the bone. So much flavor, so tender, I honestly wish I had ordered extra to take home. Let me start off by saying I loved Mimi's tacos. I've been trying to experience the new location for some time so I was excited. I went with some friends to celebrate my birthday on July 24th. The vibe & overall service was not a good experience. Our appetizers ( wings & the corn) came out separately. She definitely forgot about the corn. When reminded, she returned with corn too cold to enjoy. She returned with a fresh order that now had grated cheese that the cold order did not. The table thought that was weird. The chicken was supposed to be an order of 7 or 8, I can remember. However, what I do remember is one of the party wings wasn't even a whole wing. It was the size of a small chicken nugget. When we asked the waitress if it was supposed to be a wing she just looked at us & shrugged her shoulders like oh well. When pressed, she offered to bring something more appropriate. If the party wings were a normal size it wouldn't have been a problem, but these may have been the tiniest wings I've seen. When she approached the chef about it my friend witnessed him respond with an attitude. We were delivered food without any silverware. We asked one of the food bussers for some & he walked back to the floor twice before we had to remind him for the silverware. The food was alright , but we came for items that were no longer on the menu. We were informed that in an effort to become more upscale, items including that the tacos, salmon bites & fried cauliflower would be permanently removed from service. That's cool if that's the new direction, but you started on tacos. To eliminate those is crazy. I want to note that we were disappointed before the food came out because half of the menu wasn't available. Furthermore, serving tiny party wings doesn't really scream elevated. Will I be returning? No! Why? Because the customer service across the board wasn't worth the drive from the southwest suburbs. The waitress seemed bothered by questions about the menu as well as when we informed her of the issues with our food. Also, the vibe was loud & disturbing that night. There was a table sitting closer to the Dj who were so loud over the music & vulgar that at one point a couple of tables thought they were fighting. Not one time did the staff talk to them about lowering their volume or being respectful of the other patrons. Mind you, there were elderly & small children at tables. None of the above is indicative of elevating the environment of MiMi's. I wish I still had the picture of the chicken nugget served to us, but I deleted. The server was pleasant and came to the table with a smile every time. The ambiance was loud. I would suggest that the own have the TV's volume turned down. I've been a fan of Mimi's since its early days as a takeout-only spot, so it's great to see it evolve into a full dine-in experience. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, making it perfect for casual dining. The appetizer deal (2 for $22) is a great value. I tried the taco skillet and mac & cheese balls--both were flavorful and well-prepared. The elote corn was also a nice addition. For my entrée, I had the hot honey catfish with collard greens, which was outstanding--something I'd definitely order again. Something is off about this place. We were visiting a nearby museum and chose it carefully as part of our outing. We went with 4 friends total, one person treating. Yay! We walked in. No welcome. No "Good afternoon." No "How are you?" Just: "Do you have a reservation?" No we didn't. So we were seated right next to the only other customers. Still, it was loud as heck. The place is echoey. Ok, fine. Let's order. We order and then find out that what we are ordering is not on the menu anymore, or they are out of it. Hmm. Why not let us know BEFORE we order or cross it off the menu? We order again. Not a lot of choices on the menu, by the way. The wait person was nice as a person but seemed timid. One person asked if there was vegetarian food. They said no. [But the reviews here on Yelp said there was vegan food. Not sure what the truth is, maybe we missed it on the menu.] Food arrives at all different times. That's ok. I just wish our friends would go ahead and eat and not just let their food get cold while we waited for our food. Most people liked the food ok. Each item was pretty fried or fatty. No one raved. The portions were small. A $7 side of broccoli showed up in a tiny cup, much smaller than a normal side. (Soaked in butter and very cooked.) Not horrible but mainly tasty in that way that fried things are tasty. Fat and salt are good. Pretty unhealthy. Not subtle. Not a craft kitchen. Hardly any vegetables. The place had adequate expensive food. But no warmth and no sense of humor or joy. No one seemed glad we were there, including us. read more

We arrived at 8:50 PM--well before their 10:00 PM closing time--and waited in line for 20 minutes just to be told they couldn't seat us. A large party was clearly about to leave, which would have opened up space, but they refused anyway. To make matters worse, we kindly let a couple cut ahead of us because they were just ordering takeout. When we asked if we could order takeout instead, we were told the kitchen probably couldn't cook our meal. Why advertise that you close at 10:00 PM if your cooks can't handle an order at 9:15 PM? We made reservations for my birthday this weekend. I highly suggest you do that if you're coming at a busy time so that you are seated as soon as possible. Our server was nice she was very accommodating and answered all of our questions with transparency. We ordered the hot honey catfish with fries collard greens and mac & cheese. The catfish was delicious. I have my speculations on if it's swai but these "catfish" were decent. They were fried perfectly. The hot honey made the dish excellent. My mom had the mac & cheese and she said it was delicious the four cheese medley made the creaminess of it the perfect combination. Me and him had the fries and collard greens as our sides and the collard greens were very spicy but they were delicious. The fries were good too! Our drinks were top-tier. My friend ordered the catfish and broccoli and I wanted the salmon bites and macaroni. They were out of the salmon bites so I didn't want anything in its place. The waitress added 2 more pieces of fish! And they were 2 BIG pieces free of charge! The server was great! He was attentive, kind, and accommodating. First time trying the new location and it was good! There is low lighting, which makes the restaurant feel more intimate and good for a date night. They have cocktails available, and a mix of food. I tried the hot honey chicken sandwich which had a nice crisp, and the fries were very well seasoned. I would come back to try the catfish next time! The Birria tacos are so darn delicious and the sauce is no joke either. Each bite was better than the last. The white peach italian ice was the perfect dessert. Mimi's Craft Kitchen has so much I want to try. Located in Little Italy (therefore parking can be tight) doesn't accept reservations. Went at 1pm and was able to get a seat as the restaurant is intimate. The server was great and patient because I couldn't make up my mind. The food was seasoned just right and reasonably priced! I recently dined here with a party of four, and while the food was absolutely delicious, the service unfortunately fell far below expectations. Our meals did not come out together--each dish was brought out one at a time, with significant delays in between. I was the last person to receive my food, and by that point, the rest of my party had already finished eating. To make matters worse, I didn't receive my drink until my food arrived, despite placing the order much earlier. I was told the bartender was backed up, yet I noticed other tables who arrived after us receiving their drinks without issue. Hoping to address the situation, I asked to speak with a manager. Instead of coming over, the server returned and said the manager wanted to know what I needed--without ever coming to the table. That was very disappointing and felt dismissive. After I finally finished my meal, a staff member approached and began clearing our glasses while stating that they needed the table, which felt rushed and unprofessional given the earlier delays we experienced. I truly wanted to love this place, especially because I value supporting Black-owned businesses, and the food itself was excellent. However, the service experience overshadowed everything else. I hope improvements are made, because this restaurant has great potential--but based on this visit, I'm not sure I would return. read more
