Unfortunately I don't think it was the best item I tried that night because the ratio of wrap to mac n cheese wasn't balanced enough. I think I'd prefer the battered ball version over the roll. The broccoli and potato croquettes were a bit of a heavy let down because they just seemed like a deep fried ball of softness but i was hoping there was going to be some sharpness or gooeness from cheese and maybe a kick of spice from cayene or paprika or something. It was still filling but not as tasty, maybe a drizzle of a sauce could have helped. The potato skins were the real winners for me! those had good texture, flavor, and they just looked like a fun bite! Staff here are cool and super friendly which is always a plus. This was my first time experiencing a "food stand" type of eatery. It's a window in the wall, with the menu on the open door. You order and pay at the window then chill on the sidewalk while your food is prepared, or go to the bar next door and they'll bring your food there. I was intrigued by almost every item on the menu. They were common dishes but with really clever and fun twists, like mac and cheese egg rolls or kimchi slaw on the chicken sandwich. There were several sandwich options and a couple salads, as well as a few appetizers. We got the garlic parm fries, which were delicious! I loved the punch from the garlic, and the fries were crispy and hot. I got the chicken and waffles, which came with two pieces of chicken, a waffle, and seasonal fruit. The chicken was delicious, greasy (as expected!) but not in a bad way, and it wasn't dry. We walked over to the Orpheum Theater with our food, to sit nearby and eat before a show (pre-COVID!). Unfortunately by the time we got there, the waffle was a bit soggy and heavy; given the caliber of their other food though, I imagine it would've been delicious and slightly crunchy if I had devoured it right away. The seasonal fruit was (sadly!) not even a full mandarin orange, but it was delicious and on-point. I felt safe walking with my family at night, but I probably wouldn't wander the nearby streets alone. So this review is also based off my own poor research before coming here. My friends and I were looking for a place to eat after watching Hamilton and the pictures of the food here looked amazing! However, we had no idea this place was literally a window where you order food and take it to go. The area is a bit sketch too as there were a lot of homeless people sitting around. There is a bar next door where you can eat your food there but at 11pm on a Thursday night, it was surprisingly packed. We ended up taking our food to go instead. Now for the food, we ended up getting the chicken sandwich, potato skins, brussel sprouts, and mac and cheese egg rolls. The food was all pretty good! I would recommend all of them except the chicken sandwich as the chicken itself was kinda dry. I liked the food here but I don't think I would come back just because of the area. Great for late night especially when you've been drinking and are getting the hungers! I recommend the box burger and the chicken and waffles. Holy crap this place is so amazing best spot I ate during my vacation at San Francisco

I've always said the divier the better, and this place is no different. I was visiting the city at the time of my visit, and was staying in a hotel nearby - it was walking distance from the shops in the financial district. The short line was quick and the guy taking our order was super nice & welcoming. The food took about 15 mins (I got the box burger & my friend got the tempest) and was well-worth the wait. Do yourself a favor, however, and remember your ID. People that get food here usually eat in the bar next door, but since my friend forgot hers we ate on the side of the street - no regrets. Place doesn't look like much from the outside but once inside it has a very hip look, a dive bar. Can watch sports, play pool and drink at the bar. THE FOOD: Got the chicken fried sandwich and Box Burger. The chicken sandwich was good. Definitely quality in taste and freshness. But I've had better. The sauce inside was perfect for a fried chicken sandwich but needs some ranch to go with it which they have. The Box Burger was also good. Soft buns, thick patty and fresh ingredients inside. This is the BEST burger in San Francisco, hands down. It's actually funny how I discovered this place. I was at a company party in Mountain View in 2017, shoveling my face with the burger sliders that were being catered, saying to myself and my coworkers that this was the most delicious burger I've ever had. I finally decided I had to ask the caterer where it was from. He said that it was their own recipe, but they had also sold the recipe to The Tempest in SF (which is the bar that Box Kitchen is attached to). The area the restaurant is in does look a little sketchy but we didn't feel unsafe. There were other customers as well so we decided to stick around and order. There is no seating area after three, so you walk up to the window and order. You can take it to go, or eat on the sidewalk as I saw other people doing. We decided to take it to go as we saw that there were huge rats roaming the streets not to far from here. We ordered two orders of the box burger, an order of the chicken and waffles, and an order of French fries! The employee working was friendly, took our orders, and told us it would be a bit. But in all seriousness, Box Kitchen is awesome. The prices for the food are a tad high, but the food quality is awesome. My co worker said their burger are really good, and they can do medium rare for you if you like, but for $21 dollar for both a fried and a burger I thought it was too expensive for me. I went for a fried tomato sanwhich instead, and I asked them to have the sauce on the side, because I couldn't eat it right away, at least not until my lunch time which was about 2 hrs later. The sanwhich by itself was like 9 buc, add avocado for 3 buc, so the total was around 14 dollar for a veggie sanwhich so it was not cheap. The sauce that they gave was some really citricy aioli sauce. 'Off the beaten path' and 'for locals' are two of the best descriptors I can give for San Francisco's Box Kitchen located within Tempest. The physical local is in what is seemingly a back alley, though merely a smaller, one-way street. The photos here on Yelp are what brought us here, and thank goodness they did. A lil scruffy and artsy, but chock-a-block full of characters and charm. Box Kitchen may seem a lil rough around the edges, but that's where it stops. The service folks could not have been more friendly and engaging. One, to the point where I felt like asking if she was originally from the south. There's nothing scruffy of the food. The chicken sandwich was juicy, flavorful, and plentiful. The fries were just OK, but absolutely what you'd expect out of bar food. Gee, I wish I was a rudely impatient SoMa slacker like the ones who seem to hover around this modest evening operation next to the Tempest nightclub. They just shove themselves in front of you as you are about to order and then smoke next to you and look at their cell phones until their food is ready. I just wonder how the poor guy inside the place stands dealing with the crap-fest of customers that come here. He operates the Eat Box all by his lonesome and does a heroic job serving up what I would describe as funky twists on carnival fare. On the menu are such delectable goodies like wings, garlic fries, pulled pork sandwiches, 'pour'-boy burgers, and fried pickles. All the good stuff you would find after you knock down only two of the milk bottles in the midway. It was hard to decide, especially since it was pitch-black at 7:30PM in the Natoma alleyway where I felt like I was about to be cut. But despite the odds, I chose two tantalizing items - Aron's Little Wiener (misspelled as 'Weiner' on the chalkboard), just $5, and the $6 Chicken in Waffles. This is when the army of praying mantises started contaminating the landscape. Twenty minutes elapsed, but the wait seems reasonable since the guy behind the window prepares the food one order at a time. You can even watch him make everything from scratch with his deep fryer going full gonzo at that hour. I took it to go since I ain't eatin' in that alley with the smoking slackers. I trundled home with my food and was pleasantly surprised. I didn't know that Chicken in Waffles actually meant 'chicken in waffles' or more accurately, waffle sticks (see photo). Referring to the poultry as 'chicken carnitas', he used real pieces of shredded chicken since I actually ran into a bone in one of the waffles. It came with a zingy siracha maple syrup, which I thought was a nice touch for all the sweetness involved. I especially liked Aron's little asset (no offense, Aron) since it turned out to be a set of mini-corn dogs that used higher-end sausages and mixed bits of jalapeno in the batter. They were delicious with an aggressive dunking into the spicy aioli (see photo). What a nice surprise this little closet operation turned out to be. It may be worth tolerating the slacker mantises. I just need to bring a big can of Raid next time I venture into the bowels of the Natoma alley. Since our dinner reservation wasn't until 9:30p, we needed snacks. Plus a little healthy since they were brussels? All kidding aside, this was actually some people's fav. It was just a tad too sweet for me. *Natoma dog: bacon wrapped all beef hot dog, pickled onions, roasted jalapeno salsa, garlic aioli, queso fresco, roll ($7) -Another fav among the group. Chicken in waffles: is exactly what the name spells out to be, chicken shreds within the waffle dipped with sriracha maple syrup. The quail egg, cheese, and pork belly tasted amazing. I'm reading a lot of reviews wondering why this place is rated so high. I originally gave 3 stars, but I think you just have to order the right foods. Yes, everyone has different interests, so choose wisely! The wait isn't super slow but it isn't super fast either. Every dish sounded too compelling to roughly decide and settle for just one or two. They have Chicken and Waffles, signature Box Burgers, Battered Corn on the Cobs, Chicharones, Fried Chicken Wings, Fried Chicken Sando and Crisp Potato Skins! It seemed like a short, simple list, but it was hard to choose because all of the names sounded too savory to pass up! They even have whole coconuts as drinks! So hipster and random at the same time! Basically, anything coming out from their kitchen, was top notch, comfort food! The highlight was their potato skins! It was perfectly crispy and a unique concept! It is served as 3 in an order with the pork belly tucked inside the potato skin and each topped with sunny side up quail egg. It is food-gasm in the mouth! Believe me! The burger is pretty massive and the egg was wonderfully runny, so I gave up on eating it with my hands pretty early and just used a fork and knife. The patty was less pink than I'd like, but it was large and still pretty juicy, and I was a big fan of the crispy shallots. What to devour: Box Burger ~ made with ground Schmitz Ranch chuck, is a juicy affair, served on a potato pepper bun that's topped with bacon shallot gastrique, white cheddar, greens, tomato and crisp shallot rings mmmm-mazing burger! +2 for egg or bacon Chicken IN Waffles ~ the reason why I came here since I was craving this, did not disappoint. The waffles have the shredded chicken cooked inside of them and come with a side of sriracha syrup. Love the sweet and hot of the Sriracha syrup, what a genius idea. Box Kitchen definitely hits the spot for delicious late-night eats. It was on my list of places to checkout while in San Fran, but we actually happened upon it earlier than expected so I had not yet memorized the menu to decide what I wanted (a regular requirement for someone as indecisive as me) big mistake! First of all, if you are as hangry as I was- everything will sound delicious so, make sure you have a rough idea of what you want ahead of time. We ordered the Fried Avocado Tacos, Garlic Parm Fries, and the burger (in my excitement I forgot to include it in my menu photo, but it had fried onions, bacon, cheese and loads of deliciousness). Everything tasted SO good and really hit the spot. I won't even doc points for the guilt I felt after the mass consumption, because daaaamn. The cool thing here is that it's right next to a bar, so you can have your food to eat there, or get it to go (like we did). I would have given 5 stars, but the wait is a little on the long side with nowhere to sit, especially if you don't feel like checking out the bar next door. But really that was my only complaint. The food came quickly and held its own/didn't get soggy or weird over the 15 min walk we had to make back to the hotel. All in all, I wish we had this awesome spot in Ottawa, and if I'm ever back in San Fran, I'll definitely be checking it out again! read more

This is cute af. It's in a alleyway in the middle of SOMA but there were many things wrong as well. The cashier is super dope (at least when we went; she was super sweet!) and the food smells good! But it's typical SF prices, pretty overpriced for many normal things. They got burgers, hot dogs, fries and other food items. My friends and I ended up getting the fried chicken sandwich, the chili cheese dog and the box burger. It was an addition $2-4 to add fries on top of the $10-14 price tag already!! The food wasn't that large in portion and the weird catch was you could sit next door at the bar. We walk in and they're playing heavy metal music and NO WHERE TO SEAT. So that was.... annoying lol. We ended up eating at this mini bar thing next to the window right above the trash cans. Not the best situation but we were able to eat! The alleyway has hella cars coming down HELLA fast and just be careful of your surroundings. There's also a large homeless population walking by so just be on that watch out for that too. Overall, this place is great for take out, don't go to the bar next door. No one will help you. Be ready to spend almost $20 on a small meal. Andddd the wait is at least 15 mins! read more

My friend and I were planning on stopping by after a late night movie at the metreon but totally walked almost all the way home before we realized WAIT WE FORGOT THE POTATOES! And yes, we walked the five long downtown blocks in the freezing cold in the cutty alley way to box kitchen for the potato skins. And yes it was worth it. Who came up with the idea to put pork belly, greens, a fried quail egg, and crack sauce on a crispy potato skin? They did and they're geniuses. Unfortunately that was all we tried because my friend wasn't that hungry and I didn't want to look like a fat ass. Tip: Grab a drink or two next door at Tempest while you're waiting for your food, they'll even let you bring it in to eat! read more

Came here for lunch today. They use the Tempest for their restaurant space. There was table seating available but since I was by myself I decided to sit at the bar. The restaurant being a bar too means you can order mixed drinks with your lunch if you wanted to. I just stuck with a porter to go along with the fried chicken sandwich I ordered along with fries. The fries were excellent. The right amount of crispiness, not too soggy, and not huge steak fries. I made a 2nd order of the fries and I never do that. Good portioned piece of chicken in the sandwich which crispy and the right amount of cooked for me. I'm glad they didn't automatically put hot sauce on it like what other places do. read more

The Box Kitchen is connected to The Tempest bar where you can go to eat inside if desired! Not being from the area, we asked for recommendations and the garlic parm fries are a must buy and was highly recommended! The burger could easily turn a vegetarian it's that good! They don't take Apple Pay so bring the card! Dope up the burger with all the extras. The fried chicken isn't too bad. Best to eat when it's fresh, the bar next door is great for that and a drink. Enjoy! Go eat! read more
