The line gets long, but despite it being a two-person operation on a busy weekend in the summer, those two kept it moving along! We got t o orders of the Fish and Chips, then took our orders to eat on a nearby picnic table. The fish was good and crispy, but the pieces were small, making the coating-to-fish ratio tip a little too far to the former. The chips were long and very English. My sons didn't love them, but they were just like what you'd find in your traditional paper-wrapped order. Plus, my boys have yet to realize that it only makes sense to dowse it all in vinegar. When they do, they will realize why the larger fries are better - they soak up just the right amount of vinegar! My oldest was still hungry and loved the fish enough to stand in a line whose length had doubled since our first time through. I took a star off for two reasons - one, there were no napkins, and the tartar sauce comes with the order, like it or not. I tried not to get it so I'd waste one last piece of plastic, but that didn't happen. Also, an older woman was trying to read the partially wiped-off dry erase board menu, and when she tried to ask a question while ordering, was snapped at. I don't generally eat fish. I heard about this place so we went when we were in the area. The service was good. The food was on point. The atmosphere was cool, and everyone was friendly and polite. There isn't an area to eat per se, across the street is a few tables and a garbage. Patrons were considerate and shared limited space. I will definitely come back in the future. read more

But I am always skeptical of such high reviews and I was even more skeptical when I decided to show up right at the 11am open on a summer Sunday to a 45-minute line up the sidewalk. However, I overheard someone in line that has traveled around the entire country in an RV and said that this place has the BEST fish and chips in the entire country. With such a big statement, I just HAD to try this place at and boy was I not disappointed! The breading on the fish has a perfect balance of crunch and freshness. The fish was definitely fresh without being too "fishy" of a taste. As weird as that sounds, it is an amazing balance! The fish pieces are definitely on the smaller side so if you are a bigger eater, keep this in mind. The fries were definitely good. Perfectly fried! My only minor gripe is that I wish they gave out fresh lemon slices. Squeezing lemon over the fish makes their fish 'n chips so much better. Bring some if you can! For about 25-35 people that were already in line when I arrived at 11am on a summer Sunday, it took me about 45 minutes from the beginning to getting my food and walking off. There is no other place like Bowpicker's fish and chips. We took a day trip to Astoria and Bowpicker's was on the top of the list to visit. And we are so glad we did. These are no ordinary fish and chips. They are fried to crispy perfection and you will for sure fall in love at first bite. The homemade tarter sauce complements the fish so well, they are a match made in heaven. Operating out of an unassuming old fishing boat, Bowpicker's exudes homey and quaint vibes that leaves you wanting to go back. Real quaint place with just three folks working on this tiny outdoor place but there was a line 10 deep when I walked up. Folks, they only take cash but I knew ahead of time. I have never had beer battered albacore tuna and I will say I might never go back to cod or halibut. I can hear the cans of beer opening as they made thr fish to order! Like, who does that, apparently these folks take fish'n'chips seriously. Don't let the pictures fool you, the tuna pieces are minimum four bites. 5 stars for the establishment and probs closer to 3.5 for the wait, price point, and taste. After looking at the best fish & chips in the area Bowpicker came up frequently that it had to be added to the list for the visit to Astoria. It could be easy to miss since there's not a big sign but you definitely won't miss it due to the line which seems to be consistent here. When you drive up you think there is parking lot but it's reserved for the base so be sure not to park there to not get fined. Note it's CASH only so bring some if you want to get multiple orders. Line even when it was lightly drizzling was quite long and took around 30-40 mins which seems a bit long for fish & chips but we decided to wait it out. They are only a 1 or 2 person show in there but they crank the orders out. By the time we got there we got an oder of 5 and an additional one on the side. The fries here were cut thick and had a nice crunch while being fluffy inside. As for the fish they have a thinner coating and the fish is more dense than what I expected. The fish tasted fresh but weren't piping hot by the time we got our order. We ordered an extra piece on the side but it seemed smaller than the other pieces so might opt to not get an extra one next time. All in all, it's a local and visitor favorite and worth trying when the line is shorter. read more

I was driving by at Lunch time and the line was actually very short. First time I've ever seen it so short so I thought I better try it. Ive drove by countless times and have never stopped because the line is always long. Now onto the review - Very friendly staff. Line is usually long but seemed to move at a decent pace. You can believe the hype! I didn't add any pictures; I think that has been adequately covered. I stopped by last Saturday. It was a beautiful day, and there were about 25 people in line already. I ordered the full order ($14), which includes 5 pieces of fish and fries. The pieces of fish are smaller than some places, but they were great! In fact, the fish to breading ratio was excellent. A lot of times, PNW restaurants and pubs will 'over bread' their fish. They are so proud of their beer batter, that they use WAY too much. That was not the case at the Bowpicker. And they use Albacore Tuna, instead of cod or halibut! Yummm. The fries were good as well. I'll be back; I just wish I'd tried the Bowpicker sooner. read more

Finally, after so many years of waiting, I made it to Astoria when these folks were open. Was it worth the wait? Absolutely. Even at 5 minutes after opening, there was a line; definitely a good sign. Never mind the novelty of having the entire operation inside a land docked boat. Or that they only have one item on the menu. I can only describe the batter as crispy fluffy, somewhat unique in the world of fish and chips. Also that they use tuna chunks is rather different, but it works. Not sure if it's intentional, but the fries were a bit of a mixed bag, with the full spectrum of tiny thin crispies to the thick ones. I guess you end up with your preferred ones at some point. The waiting line moves quite quickly, so don't be put off by it. Highly recommend. read more

I woke up this morning and decided that it would be a boring day if I just sat at home all day. The crazy weather of the past week had momentarily subsided. I jumped on the Puget Island Ferry and headed for Astoria with only one priority: hope that I could get some battered and fried albacore tuna at The Bowpicker. I was so happy to pull up and see only two people in line. The rain had stopped for a few minutes. The PNW-based gods had smiled upon me in so many ways. I immediately ordered one full order. I then waited about ten minutes for my fresh, made to order meal. The person Klamath Falls resident beside me in line asked, "Is this place popular?" I laughed. I explained that I had just forded a river and driven 30 miles to possibly stand in line for 30 minutes in the rain for some of the best battered fish I have had in my entire life. The guy behind him said he drove from Salem. After a fun chat, my food was delivered and I hustled to the car as a squall started to spit moisture on the line of faithful customers that had now amassed. Needless to say, the fish was everything I remembered. The steak fries (with some Johnny's Seasoning Salt were scrumptious. The only problem was that I should have ordered more.... Dining is outside or in your car, but that's the only downside if the weather sucks. There are a couple of picknick tables for nice weather, but the nicer the weather, the longer the line. Now I've been out to Astoria many times and when I head into the area, I always park in the same parking lot which happens to be a half a block from Bowpicker's. There is always a line. So be prepared to wait. And you should wait because it is well worth it. Flaky mild white fish perfectly fried up with a side of tartar sauce and steak fries. The fish was simply amazing, firm but really moist and seasoned well. The crust just cracked in your mouth. I just wish the same care had been taken with the fries instead of frozen ones. Oh well, doesn't mean I wouldn't stand in the line again. Two options of a three piece or a six piece and you can always add more fish. Can't go wrong there. Just go there. The fish is made with Albacore Tuna which makes for a better flavor in my opinion. I'm not a fan of paste fries which theirs were otherwise I would have given them 5 stars.
