This place is always worth the wait. It's got a best fish and chips in town and dare I say the best in all of the Oregon. Positives: -the best fish and chips I've ever had. They use tuna which gives a more meaty texture. Secondly, the batter they use is seasoned really well. You honestly don't even need the sauce. -prices were very good. Even though it's gone up over the years it's still very good for the amount you get. And did I mention it's the best fish and chips in Oregon? lol -service is very friendly Negatives: -you gotta take it to the car if it's raining. No seats just standing room. But I don't care it's so good I'll eat them standing and I'll eat them in the rain. Overall 5/5 We have eaten here every time we have visited Astoria. This spot is a must do for us. read more

Ok, we dropped by here for a quick nosh, there was a slight line even at the odd hour we went, so prep for that. But the service was friendly, and the food, so worth it! The fish is battered tuna, which I had yet to try, so even more fun, and it was amazing. Fried well, crispy, not greasy, and the fries were also yummy. No places to sit, so be prepped to sit in your car. Note: Even if you do not like tuna, still try it! My husband does not but loved it anyway. read more

What a great surprise! My husband had heard about this place but I hadn't. When we came driving into town and saw this boat we were immediately excited. There was of course a line but it went quickly and was so worth it! The fish served is fried tuna. I've never had batter and fried tuna and it was really good! Your only options are half order, whole order, extra piece of fish, extra order of fries and drinks. Simple but perfectly delicious! The tartar sauce was even good. We had our young daughters with us and they loved it too. Such a cool boat, great view, friendly staff and delicious food. If you're in Astoria, you have to check them out! read more

This was a first for me and it was such a fun and unique experience. I found it via this wonderful app and everyone's rave reviews are definitely warranted. Bow pickers is literally in a boat. You'll probably wait in line but be patient because it goes quick. They only have one menu item and it's fish and chips so there's not much to deliberate. Once you reach the register, place your order and then they have it to you super quick. There's a little sauce station next to where you grab your food and off you go to find somewhere to sit. They don't have indoor seating or even outdoor seating. You either find somewhere near by to park yourself or sit in your car. The fish was a new experience for me because it was deep fried tuna. I've never had that preparation before but I enjoyed it. The beer batter is super light and crispy. The tuna is meaty and steak like in texture. It's almost like a fish nugget. I usually am not a fan of tartar sauce but I liked theirs. The fries were also good. If you're nearby, definitely stop in! read more

Waited about an hour to get essentially the equivalent of FISH NUGGETS! Think chicken nugget sized fish! HORRIBLE, DENSE, NOT CRISPY. The fries taste like toaster oven fries. Never again. Meh. I felt like it was a tourist trap. Is it good, sure. It's fine fish and chips but nowhere near the best I've had. Also I'm a fan of fried cod, and these were not. They were a bit dry for my liking. The batter was very light and crispy. Long line, simple menu. Nowhere to sit down except for picnic tables by the ice cream shop. It was fine fish and chips, nothing to rave about. I wish we had tried the others closer to the water, then we'd at least have a nice view or seating. read more

Long lines at all hours of the day, particularly for hole-in-the-wall dining establishments, is usually a good sign. In Bowpicker's case, it's what first drew our attention to the tiny ship-shaped food "cart", which otherwise could easily be mistaken for quirky décor of a small fishing town. Well, that, and the delicious aroma of fried fish and chips! After several visits to Astoria, always on the wrong day(s) or hours, as Bowpicker is only open Wednesday through Saturday, my wife and I finally found our chance, thirty minutes before closing on a Wednesday afternoon. Miraculously, there was no line at all! Worried that we had somehow missed the boat (get it?!), we scampered up to the counter, ordered a Whole Order, +1, and waited anxiously for our breaded basket bounty! Unlike most other fried fish filets, Bowpicker's iteration is more like fish nuggets. It's not immediately apparently why, until you take that first savory bite. Yeah, buoy! Turns out another difference, and likely the reason that this compact chippy is so famous, is that the fish used is albacore tuna, instead of cod, halibut or (ugh!) salmon. It's meaty, it's buttery, and it's dense...like tiny tuna steaks! (Note to self: "Tiny Tuna steaks" makes me think of the theme song for Tiny Toon Adventures. Stick around for my homage at the end of the review!) Between the two of us, we split our basket of 5, plus one, plus a couple of extras the owner threw in for no charge, which was a wonderful gesture. Because of how filling the albacore is, it ended up being more than enough for both of us. My wife declared them the best fish and chips she'd ever had anywhere; similarly, other than one other magical fish & chips experience I had in the UK*, that I would rank slightly higher, I completely agree with her: in our humble opinion(s) Bowpicker's is the best fish and chips you'll find in the PNW, and possibly the United States! That's no exaggeration. Believe the hype, and if you find yourself in downtown Astoria between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Wednesday thru Saturday, and there isn't much of a line...well, even if there is...you owe it to yourself to embark on a Tiny Tuna Adventure to Bowpicker's Fish and Chips, one that you are not likely to ever forget...just like the awful song I wrote below! Discovered Bowpicker about 30 years ago, best fish and chips in the USA. I've taken our visitors and family from other states over the years, my dad claims them to be the best he's had since he left England! Still my favorite with a nice dose of malt vinegar and a tartar sauce for the fries! The service is pleasant and how fun to order right from the boat:) Weather dependent we either eat at picnic tables or in the car in the rain. read more

Food is delicious, fish is dense and hot. Cooked fresh to order. Fries are nice and thick, crispy and stout. The tartar sauce is standard and ketchup is a nice add. Malt vinegar is available at the counter. Expect a line and go somewhere to sit, like across the street under the cherry tree. Parking is on the street or in the gravel lot immediately south. Pretty good fish and chips here! and note - that's all they have. Tuna fish and chips. I actually liked how they had tuna instead of the more common halibut or cod so it allowed us to try something we haven't had before. The fish was fresh and fried perfectly! The pieces of fish are smaller than your traditional fish and chips though, so the full order of 5 pieces is more like a regular order of 2-3 pieces elsewhere. Bowpicker is definitely worth checking out if you're looking for some good food in Astoria! We came the end of August for a late lunch and there were only 5 people in line ahead of us... so it's not always a long line like many reviews warn people about! Also, Bowpicker basically operates out of a boat so there's no indoor seating. I didn't really notice any outdoor seating either. I mostly saw people eating around the boat or in the parking lot or bringing food back to their car. Customer service was kind of a downer. I asked a simple question about the menu to the person taking orders and was given a quick and rude response. Other than that, we liked Bowpicker and would go back! read more

This was a first time having tuna fish and chips. They were fresh and had a great ratio of breading to fish! When I visited, I ended up waiting about 45 minutes in line but it was worth the wait to try it. I probably wouldn't do it again if the line were a similar length but it's definitely great value for the quality of fish. I still prefer prefer a cod or halibut fish and chips with no line. read more

It's not hard to decide what to order at Bowpicker Fish & Chips. Do you want three pieces of beer-battered albacore tuna or five? That's your only choices when you climb aboard The Nicky, a 28-foot gillnet boat that in the 1930s plucked salmon from the Columbia River. Add fries and a pop and walk across the street to tables to eat. You may end up sitting next to a group of Scandanavians bicycling along the West Coast, as we did. What better way to advertise your food than have it come straight from a deep-fryer in a fishing boat. There's little question of what's going on when you drive past the line of people waiting for their food. The pieces were good sized and tasty, Even though there was a long line, it didn't take long for us to get our orders. Service was good, everything cooked to order. Great spot, but not great for eating here. Really cool boat with the kitchen inside. Chips were good but the fish pieces were tiny and cooked until they were hard and dry. I believe it's black cod, but there's little flavor when it's so dry. We have eaten here several times. It is one of the highest rated food trucks on the coast. They only do Fish and Chips (that is a negative). The fish is tuna and you can order 3 pieces and chips or 5 pieces and chips. It is very good. But not my favorite fish for fish and chips (that is just me). Also I miss having a little cole slaw with it. We will continue to eat there when we pass thru. Word to the wise. Like amny of the restaurants they are not there 7 days a week. You will need to call ahead and make sure they are open if you plan on stopping there for food. read more

We ordered the 5 pieces fish and chip entree, which came with steak fries for $15.00. They offered many different condiments and sauces - we chose malt and lemon, tartar sauce and ketchup were served with the entree. It was raining heavily so my husband ordered and we ate in our car. Pretty fast service, no frills. Smaller sized fish, a bit heavily breaded but it was good not great. We weren't too hungry so perfect for sharing. read more

Was in Astoria with a friend and we wanted some fish for lunch. We had driven by Bowpicker, and the sight of the boat on the hill reminded me of past good meal experiences here. As far as I could tell, the only option was halibut fish and chips. You can get a full meal of five pieces of fish and fries or a half order, which is three pieces. For me, the half portion was totally filling and made a very enjoyable lunch. There is always a line here, but the line moves very quickly, and you will not be waiting too long. You do have to find your own seating,; we chose to eat in my vehicle. It was fine. We both felt that we had an excellent lunch experience in Astoria. read more

Bowpicker is a MUST HAVE when I'm in Astoria. The line can be long, but I love good fish so I'm not complaining. Hands down the best fried fish I've ever had . Someone said it's tuna, that's fine with me I LOVE Bowpicker . The prices are good the fries are delicious hot and fresh and the tartar sauce is good but honestly the fish is so delicious I didn't really need anything extra on it . Don't be daunted by 5 piece as the fish pieces are maybe 2". Next time I'd throw in for an extra piece of fish. They have an awesome selection of sauces including lemon, hot sauces, vinegar, tartar, ketchup and more. Fish is tender and everything is cooked fresh to order. Take out only. The. Best. Fish. And. Chips. I. Have. Eaten. In. My. Entire. Life. So good, we went two days in a row. The battered albacore is a REVELATION. Yes, the line can be brutal. Bring an umbrella for shade on hot days. Bring water. Plop down on the sidewalk. Get there early. It is well worth it in my opinion, though even I would be hard pressed to wait for 3 hours. We only sell fish& Chips. We try to be as fast as we can and try to make it a wonderful experience for everyone.

History

Established in 2000.

My husband came up with the idea. We sell our fish & chips out of a retired gillnet boat as a way of preserving a piece of maritime history on the Columbia River and as a way to make a living. It has grown a lot in the last 25 years. Our family has continued to run the business with about 4 additional employees. We have always strived for consistency and tried to serve the best tasting fish and chips.

We were greeted by a friendly young woman behind the high window of the cart. Both my companion and I ordered halibut fish and chips. We are glad we did! I consider myself a fish and chips connoisseur and these were some of the best I've had. The halibut was flaky and perfectly cooked. The batter was light and flavorful and properly greasy. The French fries were also incredible--crispy and perfect. Both the fish and the chips were steaming hot when they were delivered to our table. The servings were generous. The side of coleslaw was fresh and tasty. The meals were not inexpensive, but both of us were glad we sprang for these. I think Ship Out will be on regular rotation when we go to the Oregon Coast!
