It's not too often you can say that you waited 45+ minutes in line for food and it was totally worth it. However, after eating the fish and chips from Bowpicker, this is one of those rare exceptions. We did a whole order with a large side of tartar sauce. They use albacore tuna, instead of the typical cod or haddock, which gives the fish a solid bite that doesn't flake or fall apart. They're more like fish nuggets but damn, they are DELICIOUS. The batter is light, crispy and not greasy at all. The tartar sauce is so on point and compliments the fish and chips perfectly. The food is fairly excellent, let's just get that out of the way. If you're willing to wait for it, Bowpicker's spin on fish and chips using albacore tuna is exquisite. The tuna is meatier so you get like fish nuggets almost. I don't think it's better than halibut for fish and chips, but it's an inspired choice. The steak fries are very good and perfectly cooked too. The tartar sauce tasted a little bland. I'm not sure if it's made in house or not. You know my opinion of the food. Now listen and be warned if you come to this place based off any influencer's recommendation. They will tell you the line moves quickly. This is a LIE. The line moves incredibly slowly. You will feel like you are at Six Flags waiting on a rollercoaster. The line was not even half way down the sidewalk by the fish stand, and it took us nearly 45 minutes to even get on the platform to order our food. By the time we got our food it was an hour. So the reviews said line moves fast but we spent a good hour there. I did a calculation. For a group of two ordering one meal each takes about 3-5 min. We had a group of two in the front that ordered at least 6 meals so they took much longer. I'd call those fish nuggets. They are very fulfilling. I still prefer cod/halibut if it's fish and chips. It would be nice if the business could handout numbers so ppl don't have to wait in such a long line but I understand it's fried food that can't wait. You'll probably wait in line but be patient because it goes quick. They only have one menu item and it's fish and chips so there's not much to deliberate. Once you reach the register, place your order and then they have it to you super quick. There's a little sauce station next to where you grab your food and off you go to find somewhere to sit. They don't have indoor seating or even outdoor seating. You either find somewhere near by to park yourself or sit in your car. The fish was a new experience for me because it was deep fried tuna. The best fish and chips I've ever had. Everyone talked this place up and it didn't disappoint!

Long lines at all hours of the day, particularly for hole-in-the-wall dining establishments, is usually a good sign. In Bowpicker's case, it's what first drew our attention to the tiny ship-shaped food "cart", which otherwise could easily be mistaken for quirky décor of a small fishing town. Well, that, and the delicious aroma of fried fish and chips! After several visits to Astoria, always on the wrong day(s) or hours, as Bowpicker is only open Wednesday through Saturday, my wife and I finally found our chance, thirty minutes before closing on a Wednesday afternoon. Miraculously, there was no line at all! Worried that we had somehow missed the boat (get it?!), we scampered up to the counter, ordered a Whole Order, +1, and waited anxiously for our breaded basket bounty! Unlike most other fried fish filets, Bowpicker's iteration is more like fish nuggets. It's not immediately apparently why, until you take that first savory bite. Yeah, buoy! Turns out another difference, and likely the reason that this compact chippy is so famous, is that the fish used is albacore tuna, instead of cod, halibut or (ugh!) salmon. It's meaty, it's buttery, and it's dense...like tiny tuna steaks! (Note to self: "Tiny Tuna steaks" makes me think of the theme song for Tiny Toon Adventures. Stick around for my homage at the end of the review!) Between the two of us, we split our basket of 5, plus one, plus a couple of extras the owner threw in for no charge, which was a wonderful gesture. Because of how filling the albacore is, it ended up being more than enough for both of us. My wife declared them the best fish and chips she'd ever had anywhere; similarly, other than one other magical fish & chips experience I had in the UK*, that I would rank slightly higher, I completely agree with her: in our humble opinion(s) Bowpicker's is the best fish and chips you'll find in the PNW, and possibly the United States! That's no exaggeration. I have heard so many people talk about how great this place is so we had to give it a try. Line was long, but it moved quickly. The food wasn't bad, but also not that great either. The pieces of fish were very small, think large chicken nugget, and the fries were ehhh straight out of a box. The thing that got me the most was how dirty this place is. The ceiling at the back where they serve you the food, where they keep the communal condiments, store their boxes of fries, is something nightmares are made of. I've taken our visitors and family from other states over the years, my dad claims them to be the best he's had since he left England! We came the end of August for a late lunch and there were only 5 people in line ahead of us... so it's not always a long line like many reviews warn people about! Also, Bowpicker basically operates out of a boat so there's no indoor seating. I didn't really notice any outdoor seating either.
