I bet this place is beautiful decorated for Christmas. Great experience and a perfect place to eat on the first day of a road trip.

I ate at the Boulevard Diner today. The thought popped into my mind tonight as to whether this small restaurant had any reviews on the web. I stumbled across an entry from Joe T in Scranton. Rest assured that the content and accuracy of that review matched its literacy, coherence, and grammatical correctness. That is, pay no attention to the clown behind ... or in front of ... or thrashing around on the floor tangled up in the curtain. I've eaten at the Diner three times. It is an unpretentious and, frankly, unimpressive looking place. The menu posted in the window looks like standard diner fare. On my first visit I ordered corned beef hash and eggs. I don't recall why I selected that, but I remember thinking that it was hardly a good indicator of what a restaurant can serve. I can stomach the worst version of that plate. At the same time, you can make it only so good. If you try to get artsy with it, you will (and almost certainly should) fail. As it was, the dish was very good. The service was great. The price was fine. I left thinking I hadn't learned a whole lot other than they could properly handle a simple dish. On my second visit, I ordered a pannini special -- turkey, swiss cheese, and apple. I started with the English cheese and beer soup. Remember, this place has almost a hole-in-wall type atmosphere. Tell me you expect to find those items on the menu. The soup was great. It was thick and hearty, but wasn't globby. The beer flavor clearly came through. The sandwich was fresh, and was exactly as described. I left thinking: If you don't like beer in your soup or apple slices on your sandwich, then don't order those items. The service was excellent. Today, I had another special: chicken, swiss cheese, and asparagus on a croissant. The soup was chicken and pattitalini. Okay, it wasn't pittitalini, but I didn't recognize the word either time the server said it. I decided it must be a type of pasta, which it was. The soup was great. The sandwich was very good. I would say it was great, but I have quibbles with the texture. Asparagus is fibrous and requires some vigorous chewing to separate. Croissants aren't designed for manhandling. As such, I had to maintain a balance between pulling off entire asparagus spears or smushing the croissant roll beyond recognition. Since I loved the flavors and didn't care about what anyone else there thought of my eating techniques, I wasn't terribly put out. The service was, again, excellent. One minor complaint is that the kitchen noise is not completely separated from the dining area. As such, you can hear conversations as you eat. I've heard nothing particularly inappropriate or untoward, but it's a little strange. Also, the fries aren't the best I've ever had. They're okay, but they aren't remarkable. Overall, my experience is that you can find your basic diner food here and you can find some unusual options as well. I haven't had a burger yet, and perhaps Burger King has better food and service, as Joe T claims. Of course, pigs might fly and hell might freeze over. If you have $6, 4 minutes , and need to know exactly what you're getting (krap) -- then go to BK. If you have $10, 20 minutes, and want to have both comfortable and unusual choices -- then Boulevard Diner is a much better choice. read more
