Quality Came in feeling too tired to decide, so I went with the chef's special menu--best decision of the night. The dish had a refined French touch, with balanced seasoning that let the ingredients shine rather than being overpowered by salt. I paired it with a glass of Bordeaux, which elevated the flavors beautifully. The pâté was incredibly well-seasoned, with a smooth yet rich texture. The onions and pickles were a standout--normally, I'm not a fan of preserved vegetables, but these weren't overly sour. This is a great restaurant, and would highly recommend. All the dishes we had were excellent. They have one of the best steak tartares ever, made the traditional way. They also have rabbit on the menu, which is rare, and it was cooked really well. Great selection of wines, and other drinks. Only place we've seen that has a non-alcoholic version of a Kir Royale, which was really nice. I'd give it 5 stars if it weren't for various things that happened during our particular dinner (out of a menu item the waiter hyped up, pacing of dishes was off, and it seemed they were short staffed that night). read more

On our first evening in Kelowna for Labour Day long weekend (Saturday), we decided to have dinner at Bouchons Bistro. It was a beautiful evening and we sat on the patio! We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share and each of us got our own entrees. For appies, we ordered: Gratinée Lyonnaise (French Onion soup), Les Huitres (oysters), Salade d'Endives au Bleu (Belgian endive salad with apples, walnuts, and French blue cheese), Les Escargots de Bourgogne (Burgundy snails), Foie Gras de Canard, and Le Steak Tartar. For entrees, we ordered: Halibut (fish of the day), Filet Mignon grillé, Terre & Mer (Surf and Turf with Prawns and Scallops), Le Carré d'Agneau (rack of Lamb), Le Cassoulet (Duck Confit Leg), and Spaghetti à la Sauce aux Truffles. We ordered so many appies that most of us were full by the time our entrees came, so a lot of us ended up packing most of it to-go (excluding me, cause devoured my Halibut). Dinner for 2 on a recent Friday night on the patio at this French bistro in downtown Kelowna was pleasant. Warmly greeted and seated immediately, our server Mathieu recited the off menus specials (2 apps, 2 mains) and came back with water (sparkling $9!) and TAP ($0) & some freshly baked baguette and butter. We shared 2 apps: gravlax, blinis with cream cheese - very generous portion of silky smooth melt in your mouth salmon with a smooth creamy chive cheese with 3 small blinis was enjoyable, only missing the caviar! The endive walnut apple blue cheese combined very well for a tasty salad. Bouillabaisse was choc full of perfectly cooked halibut, shrimp, mussels and scallops in a very rich, tasty broth, but the rouille was not the rich thick paste I am accustomed to. Halibut (off menu special) seasoned, cooked perfectly sitting in a white sauce with accompanying veggies was awesome. There was a nice selection of wine by the glass and my friend enjoyed her pinot gris and I loved the Chardonnay Mathieu recommended. We at at Bouchons with friends and it was very disappointing. It used to be our favorite restaurant in Kelowna. We had a waiter that had just moved from France 6 months ago and he had a major attitude problem. I almost got the impression that it was because I'm Chinese. We all ordered our meals - 2 rack of lamb, 1 filet and I ordered the prix fixe menu. They always used to provide complimentary fries with their meals but now they charge extra. You would think that with the prices they charge they could continue to provide complimentary French fries. It is a minor expense after all. When he repeated everyone's orders back to them including the salad I said to him "I have pate coming as part of my prix fixe menu". He brought everyone's salad but didn't bring my pate. Everyone waited for a few minutes and I told them to go ahead and eat. After another 10 minutes my husband went to check and see what had happened to my appetizer. The waiter said he had to be sure he plated it correctly. We ordered a bottle of wine and he asked my husband if he wanted to taste it and when my husband said yes, he poured a bit in his glass, let him taste it and then put the wine bottle down and walked away. He did not pour even our first glass of wine. Our friend asked him where he was from and when he said he was from France our friend talked to him for a while. The service from him continued to be very poor for the whole meal. The food was good but unfortunately the service we received really put a damper on the evening. Unfortunately my husband paid the bill and left his usual tip while I was in the restroom otherwise I would have told him to tip according to the service we got. Our waiter was also training a new waiter. I hope the new waiter does' have his attitude. I always believe that you tip according to the service that you receive. We've always gone to Bouchons when we are in Kelowna but after our last experience I'm not so anxious to return. read more

Had their "Dine around Okanagan" 3-course special which was delicious. No wonder they were busy. Apricot pâté with mustard was fresh and vibrant, and a good flavor combination. Salmon with grapefruit butter sauce was rich and rewarding, with a nice array of vegetables. I tried a mouthful of the pork tenderloin with mushroom and parsnip, and every flavor was rich and hearty and all flavors worked together well. The floating island dessert with meringue over custard was light and tasty. The cape gooseberry on the side was a nice unusual touch. Service was remarkably good, eager, helpful, and not intrusive. We were in the Okanogan Valley in the town of Kelowna, BC Canada for about four days. This little spot is a real jem. Old-school French bistro menu. Great price fare menu which we indulged in. Reasonably priced of course the American dollar is stronger than the Canadian dollar so it was really a bargain. It's kind of off the beaten path which is good because the other side of town is sort of a mob scene of tourists, bars, shops etc. This is in a real quiet area right off of the lake. Service was terrific. The atmosphere was wonderful. You can sit outside if you want, they have heaters. We enjoyed the inside ambience. I would suggest anyone that likes French food to come here. I don't think there's another place in the valley or around the lake with this type of cuisine. We loved it and highly recommend it. read more

They are all French speaking people that works there and so they should to keep it authentic. Our first course is the seared Fois Gra. Needless to say it was done to perfection. We inhaled every bite of it. The Chef's table menu consisted of three categories, starter, main and a dessert. I understand that this changes everyday. Last night we chose, frog legs(this was a bit bland, could be more flavorful). The steelhead trout did was amazing and for dessert we chose the creme caramel. We also ordered the French onion soup and a halibut dish and both fish was done to perfection. It was crispy on the outside and moist and juicy on the inside. They sure knows what they are doing. Recently went here for a celebratory dinner. We were very underwhelmed by the quality, service and atmosphere. First, our cocktails were watered down (bartender shook them way too long), less than half full and VERY overpriced for what we received. The temperature in the restaurant made eating very uncomfortable. The food itself was kind of bland and unimaginative, especially for the price. Partner had the filet, which he said was good, and I ordered the cassoulet - which turned out to just be beans, a small piece of pork belly, a sausage and a duck leg (for $40). Very disappointed. A town favourite judging by the filled tables in this quiet part of Kelowna. The staff were friendly and the owner even swung by to make sure all was well. Menu offered standard French fare presented nicely and with fresh ingredients. I thought it all tasted quite good but wasn't terribly memorable the next day. The restaurant gets busy and is a bit loud. The interior is an interesting mix of extremely casual with elements of fine dining. Overall, it's a very casual place. read more

We ate there last night and for the amount we paid the experience was horrible!! Our gingerale took forever to come out and our alchohol which came out first we spent $800 on, my friend was sick and didn't need to wait that long for gingerale. Then the oysters came out warm, we've never had warm oysters they always come out on ice. Then our food was completely unseasoned, it was not good at all. Our friend who went home sick, we ended up ordering a lamb dish for and there was a wire in it!! We are baffled that for a nicer restaurant this horrible service was acceptable with them, I thought especially during these times people would pay more attention? Service: Attentive, quick, but 4/5 because when asked for a recommendation between two dishes, the answer "you can't go wrong with anything on the menu" was a little disappointing. It may be true, but I just expected a little more. There was also some awkwardness in that he seemed like we were an afterthought in most cases. Food: Bouillabaisse: Delicious and packed full of meat. Pate: So yummy.. and the pickles I could have made a meal in and of itself. And then were are the fries. Located conveniently for us on Sunset Drive, this restaurant served up French cuisine. Service was excellent and they have a fairly large selection of dishes to choose from. We were able to get a table without reservations on a weekday. I imagine this place would get busier on weekends so it's probably best for reservations. I tried their escargot and it was a bit too oily for my taste. After a couple bites, the heavy oil and seasoning became a bit over-powering. For my main I tried their fillet mignon and it was good. The mushroom sauce that accompanied the steak was quite tasty. I liked the complimentary pomme frites and bread that they provided as my steak didn't really come with potatoes and the veggies were minimal. My companions were quite happy with the Plateau de fromage, Vegan Bourguignon and Flétan à la Provençale (halibut). I didn't really see any children in the restaurant and I don't think I'd recommend this restaurant if you have kids given the menu (unless they are really into French cuisine). read more

We had a reservation at Bouchons for a group of 7. My end of the table was merrily joking around and playing up our french accents as we navigated the menu. Our interest was piqued by the chef's menu of the night which had three courses; a classic French coquille, a seared tuna main, and a chocolate mousse for dessert. They also gave us bread to start - I love a place that starts you with bread. The best part of the bread was that we could use it to dip in the sauce from our coquille because we didn't want any of that buttery seafoody goodness to go to waste. There was a bit of a mix up with one of my friends' orders, but the matter was resolved. Despite the one mix up, I do think that our server was nice. He knew the menu thoroughly. The food was very rich and filling, the portions were a good size with hearty ingredients and there was no skimping on the flavours. The overall impression didn't exactly blow my mind, but I was entirely satisfied and would return. On another note - the women's washroom has two toilets; an american toilet and a european toilet, yes, a BIDET in fact. That provided our already merry end of the table even more to laugh and be jovial about. read more

Went there for the fourth time this September with my friend on an Okanagan wine tour. Yet another great meal!!! Server was a little stiff at the beginning, but eased up as the night went along. How is it possible, that such a restaurant exists in Kelowna? If you are visiting, or live in Kelowna and have not been, you need to go. Well, that is if you like French cuisine, because this place has been transported directly from France. This place is truly authentic. I recommend that when you go, you order the Chef's Table. It will be a proper 5 course French meal, and you will leave full. Another great thing about this place is you get incredible french fries as an appetizer. Which is different, but it works. They are the best you will eat...ever. It's not a cheap place to go by any means, but for truly great French cuisine, where you are greeted greet by a proper sommelier, and the owner comes to see you with a giant smile, it is worth it. Trust me when I say, the service here is second to none, and I challenge you to find better. Some of the other reviewers complained about the noise. Don't listen to them. I was advised not to bother going here without a reservation, especially on a holiday weekend. You know what? It was fine -- plenty of tables free. I opted to sit at the bar since I was dining alone. The bartender was a lovely guy who conversed with me a bit. I ordered the escargots to start off since I find many French bistros in Vancouver don't even serve them. They were lovely -- just the right proportion of garlic and basil. Quite heavy on the oil/butter, but it still tasted pretty light. The escargots came in little thin pastry shells to offer a slight contrast in texture with each bite. I would definitely love to have this dish again. I forgot to count how many there were, but thinking back I believe there were more than 6, maybe closer to about 9 or 10. I also had the mussels "Bouchon" which had a nice broth of dill, tomatoes, onions, basil, garlic, shallots, and chardonnay. The broth was great. The mussels were plentiful and large. In fact, they also came with fries so it was quite a filling meal. I ended up not being able to finish. The wine by the glass selection was limited and surprisingly featured very few local wines. I ordered a nice malbec since the couple of local options weren't calling to me. Service here was great, very much a fine dining establishment. However, they did not make me or any other guests feel uncomfortable or unwelcome regardless of attire or appearance. I will definitely want to eat here again when dining in Kelowna. read more

I was treated to a nice dinner after a long but eventful day in Kelowna. I'd already been given 5 star treatment all day and dinner at Bouchons Bistro was icing on the cake. From the moment we walked in, to the moment we said our goodbyes, the service was terrific. I ordered the salmon and baby shrimp salad. I wish I had taken a picture because it was such a lovely presentation. The baby shrimp was tucked into a wrapping of smoked salmon and the plate was garnished with fresh prawns, tobiko, and sprinkles of mildly flavoured chives. Then we were treated to an amuse bouche. It was a peppered blackberry iced concoction that cleansed our pallate for our flavourful dishes. We both ordered the Le Cassoulet, which was a rich dish of duck leg, sausage and lamb chop. I couldn't find room in my belly for dessert but I did help myself to a glass of sweet Pear Cognac which is exclusive to Bouchons Bistro. It was a lovely way to end my meal but I think I should have ordered some port to match the savory notes of my entree. I can't say enough about the service and how attentive they are. I have become a disciple of Bouchons, a faithful representation of a stylish French bistro. A proper transplant--theater posters, a wine cellar, irregular stone walls, dishes placed on doilies, a menu displayed outside--I swear, if there are butter pats shaped as fruits, I'm locking myself in the wine cellar. If my waiter has an accent, I will order anything he/she suggests. Call it my kryptonite. Bouchons is a breathtaking restaurant. It does everything right, from the checkerboard tiled floors and patterned roof to cloth-covered tables and stained-glass dividers. Hanging chalkboards advertise daily cheeses and chef specials. The interior is so impressive, you can actually tour the restaurant virtually via Google street view. No kidding, try it. If I was living in Kelowna, I'd introduce myself to the head chef and start what I would hope to be a positive relationship, mostly involving me receiving preferential treatment. Being a posh French bistro, I expected a pampered experience at an extravagant price. If proven correct, I'd still embrace Bouchons on its merits. Yet, the three-course chef's table only cost $45. That's shockingly reasonable. My waiter had an accent, so I said yes to everything he suggested. I told you, I have no self-control. You should see what I drive. Earlier that day--only three hours earlier--my girlfriend and I had enjoyed a meal at the Salted Brick, so there wasn't much left in the tank (or rather stomach). In the end, we shared the chef's course instead of ordering one each. Although I don't regret the day and adore Salted Brick, I do wish I had enough stretch to accommodate a full meal at Bouchons. At least it'll give me an excuse to return, as the actual printed menu's offerings were tempting. And they were French. I mean really French. It's an issue I've encountered with other places, especially those in my hometown, believing French akin to embracing cliché, like their only exposure to French cuisine is watching Amelie and enjoying a fondue on the weekend. Menu options are broken up between "Cliché", "Stuff Anthony Bourdain Likes" and "Mandated Family Food". Nothing offered approaches nouvelle cuisine. You get French dip, French onion soup, escargot, and quiche, a restaurant, which if it was in Paris, would be the one populated by obese Americans deluded into thinking they're enveloped in the French experience. Thankfully, Bouchons breaks from this expectation. "House Made Country Style Wild Boar Rillettes perfumed with Calvados." "Belgian Endive Salad with diced apple, walnuts and French blue cheese crumble" "Scallops and Prawns in a crispy pastry nest with sweet vermouth and candied lime sauce" Next time I'm in town, I'll take all those and a pale of truffle fries, please. On that subject, when did truffle fries become the default side option at every restaurant...ever. It's like hearing the Chicken Dance at Oktoberfest. I mean, I love truffle fries--I'm sorry, pommes frites--and all, but enough already. The next time I'm at a bistro and not receive truffle fries, I'll beam the waiter an arrogant look and denounce the establishment as boorish for not supplying a metal pale of "pommes frites". After the bread course was served alongside a cup filled with butter pats shaped as blackberries (SQUEEEEEEE!!), my girlfriend and I shared Angus beef carpaccio with parmesan shavings (automatically revealing the date of when we went, as the restaurant changes the chef's table every week). This was followed by wild spring salmon on morels risotto and concluded with mousse au chocolat. Throughout the experience, a delightful man named Frederic waited us on constantly. Water was filled repeatedly and he did everything imaginable to accommodate two late arrivals that showed up without a reservation. I was allowed to tour the wine cellar, and even took photos. We were never forgotten, and the tip was well earned. And can you believe the pomme frites and French baguette were complimentary? The final cost was only $61 including a glass of pinot noir. Fantastic AND inexpensive. Bouchons might not just be one of the best restaurants in Kelowna, but one of the best I've had...period...full stop. After reading about the faltering reputation of French restaurants in the motherland, there stands the possibility of Bouchons inflicting damage upon my expectations. The native bistros may not live up to the standards set by a small restaurant in Kelowna. I really enjoyed my meal here as the food was delicious, the service excellent and attentive, and the atmosphere cute and warm. Although there was a three-course prix fixe that sounded like a great value, I decided to order the duck confit a la carte based on the host's recommendation (his favorite dish) and added a golden beet salad with feta cheese (which was technically off the prix fixe menu but they were kind enough to accommodate). The beet salad was good, and the duck confit was amazing - moist, tender, and tasty. The portion was large but i still ate it all because it was so good. It was served with plenty of fresh vegetables (carrots, cherry tomatoes, fennel, etc) and a cone of French fries with mayonnaise. I also enjoyed my Pinot noir which was again recommended by the host to go with my duck. Service was efficient and very friendly, and extremely attentive. As a side note, i was able to get a table last minute likely because it was a weekday and I was okay not sitting on the outdoor patio, but i could see this being packed on weekends as the inside filled up even during my dinner. Also, I noticed that as is often the case in Kelowna, since it is a resort town, people were dressed in fine casual... Definitely worth revisiting! read more

We went back for the New Year's Eve special dinner. New owners ! Cool.... but same friendly, very professional waiters, which was awesome. My choice was a vol-au-vent, then foie gras, followed by lobster thermidor, then a Opera for dessert. -Vol au vent was very good. That was a good start. That was the only highlight of the whole meal as a matter of fact. -Foie gras was a disaster. Burnt, cold toasts served with what resembled more a "pate" made of leftovers, mixed with some strange liquor. It tasted bitter, funny, terrible, I had to send it back. They brought me a more normal foie gras (au torchon), but the slabs were too big and too thick, poorly plated, and the toast still too cold and burnt on the edges. Basic rule of thumb : toast is to be served WARM with foie gras. And dry, it doesn't need to be buttered or greased up. And definitely not black. -Lobster... no lobster ! Kitchen ran out. I was looking forward to it but the poor planning had me resigned to order St-Jacques (scallops) instead. Tasted okay, but nothing close to the standards I am used to for this restaurant. They used to have a knack for beautiful plating and presentation, that seems to be gone. The garnish looked miserable. -Cheese platter : 2 huge wedges of blue cheese and another type of cheese, way too much of it, also badly cut in big chunks and poorly plated. You don't freakin' serve blue cheese like that ; wtf? -Dessert : Wouldn't you know it... they ran out of dessert as well. No Opera. We had to order a chocolate mousse instead. Tasted okay but was not set properly, was a bit too runny. The new owner was friendly and tried his darndest to make us happy, but the whole experience ended up a bit bitter unfortunately. Not sure if it's a new brigade in the kitchen, but based on this experience, it looks like they need to plan their Garde-Manger and stock a little bit better and practice on their plating. And not burn the damn toasts. This restaurant consistently delivered high-quality, beautiful, yummy food for the past 12-13 years, so that last dinner was a bit of a salty surprise. It was honestly not worth the $150.00 per person (that figure includes the wines and tip). There was no compromise made on the bill for not having the dishes advertised for the event, and we weren't told this at the very beginning when our waiter initially took our order. Always wonderful atmosphere. The staff, the owner and the patrons all seem happy. Why shouldn't they? This place is a gem for Kelowna. Food is excellent, service is good, and it feels like a french bistro should. If you don't like Bouchons, it is most likely you not Bouchons. read more
