Walked passed here a million times out and about in town, but have never ventured in. The boyfriend and I were celebrating a big anniversary and decided to try drinks in a new place before we headed to dinner. I wasn't really sure what to expect walking in. It felt more like a pub than a restaurant, which is what I thought it was. I was half expecting to find frozen drinks and margaritas, but thinking back, why would there be those drinks? This is a Brazilian establishment, not a Mexican one. (maybe margaritas are big in Brazil, I'm not sure?). Anyway, we ordered ciders and took a seat at the high top tables towards the front of the pub. Sitting there a fee minutes, a member of staff came over to let us know the table we were sat at would need to be free in 15 mins as it was reserved. No worries, we moved to a couch near by, which was a lot more cosy and we were able to continue our chat over drinks. We didn't stay but for one drink, but I fully plan on coming back with friends for Salsa dance lessons and food. Seems like a fun place to hang out and the music is great.

Friday was boys night out, pub crawling with David A and Martin R. Once we were booted out of the last pub down Merchant City way at midnight, we were on the hunt for a late licensed pub. Boteco is open til 3. And has awesome salsa music. It was a no brainer. It was mega loud, mega busy and mega fun! There was a great atmosphere -helped also by the security vetting customers as they come in. Not much in the way of a beer selection, but the Estrella was good and reasonably priced. They do food here too, in the restaurant part, which is apparently great - I'll definitely be trying it soon. At the time of night we were here it's pretty much an awesome Latin infused nightclub. Had an unplanned return visit on Sunday night too - I'm so going to be a regular here! Now, can someone teach me to tango and salsa??!!

We stumbled upon Boteco by accident; I'm usually not keen on venturing up near the Trongate as the punters scare me, to be frank.

Wow what a major disappointment! I have never given a bad review of a Brazilian rodizio style steak…read morehouse. Viva is a mess the minute you walk in. Playing their music really loud and I'm deaf as hell so when I say loud I mean loud. Or 20 min wait ended up being 45 min even though there were lots of empty tables that needed to be cleaned. Once we were sat it was 18 mins before any server came over to ask about drinks. The salad bar area was in disarray. Options looked like bad cafeteria food. Now the meats. Can you say over cooked! , rubbery, dry and no flavor! The picana was almost un eatable. Seriously don't know how this place stays open. It's a far cry from a real churrascaria Thumbs down!

We had a table booked for 7:30, and we arrived about 10 minutes early. The staff asked us to take a seat in the bar area and we would be escorted to our table shortly. We then waited 15 minutes for someone to take our drinks orders, and another 5 for us to be taken to our table so we weren't actually seated until 7:40. Not a great start. A member of staff came over and explained the procedure: staff would come round with the different cuts of meat for us to try, it was all you can eat and when you can't eat any more, you flip a sign so they know to stop bringing you food. I headed over to the 'salad' bar to grab some sides, but most of the sides were stews, risottos and quite heavy dishes. I tried some of the pork stew, which was lovely, and grabbed some traditional Brazilian cheese rolls which were so moreish. There are 15 different meats to try, and we were determined to sample every one. We had been told that the meat was served medium rare, but I found that most of the beef either came totally rare, or very well done. There was no inbetween. The roast gammon was probably my favourite - it was salty, smokey and delicious. I wasn't really wowed by any of the other meats, although I didn't sample the Chicken Hearts - that was a bit much for me! For the full rodizio, which includes the salad bar and all the meat, it cost £24.95 per person. It's fair that by the end of it, you are ridiculously full and there is a novelty element to the meat being carved right at your table, but it seemed a bit much to me. The staff were very chatty and friendly, and often checked which meats you hadn't tried yet so they could get them over to you, I just found it all a bit lack-lustre. I don't think I would go rushing back, but I'm glad I experienced it.

The bar staff were fast serving and the drinks were reasonably priced too. The club area opens at 11pm and by this time the bar area was very busy! We weren't as impressed with the basement club area which was mostly concrete walls which were spray painted with pictures. Because of the concrete, the walls and ceiling were "sweaty" and literally dripping on you. The music and atmosphere were great but we just couldn't get comfortable as it was a long walk through the crowd to the bar. Also to get to the smoking area you need to fight through the crowded club, then all the way through the bar upstairs also, despite there being another staircase leading directly outside (this was only used for people entering the club). Would go here again but we still prefer El Barrio!

There's also a £1 cloakroom charge, so that's £6 out of your pocket before any drinks. The place is fun though. Boteco also serves as a restaurant and bar during the day, with good lunch specials, and cheaper drinks during the week. Well worth a visit.

I had quite possibly one of the best takes on a fry up this morning, called the scone stack. It really is good. Potato scone, black pudding and square sausage. You have to see it to believe it. Also, the staff are friendly, even had a very eccentric person in this morning (not sure if he was the manager) seemed very upbeat and perhaps not gone to bed after the night out but very good humoured.

We'd booked in for dinner at 7.15pm on a Friday night and were seated by the door. There is outdoor seating (with leopard print throws for when it gets chilly, nice touch) which would be nice for a nice day. It got quite cold by the door after a while but thankfully a nice waiter offered to close it for us which was really appreciated. Our waitress was a little brisk but it seemed like she was run off her feet the whole night. The other staff we encountered were all friendly enough as well. Having a look over the menu I felt a little rushed to decide what to have but perhaps they wanted to turn our table over. The menu is a little odd, to be honest. Pasta dishes on a tapas menu? I just don't get it. There is also a selection of Brutti Bread Piccolo which I'm guessing is something like pinchos but never found out as the waitress didn't seem to have the time to answer questions. I avoided the section of the menu that baffled me and stuck with the more traditional tapas dishes: croquettes (cheese and bacon), pan catalan (tomato bread), peaceful prawns (butter and garlic prawns) and deep fried halloumi. Other dishes I tried thanks to my dining companions (Graeme H & Katie V) were chorizo, patatas bravas, albondigas and I'm sure there was also a squid/calamari dish that I can't see on the menu just now. The stand out delicious dish for me were the croquettes. Super crispy on the outside and really cheesy in the middle, these were really amazing. So much so, as I excited tucked into the last one I was proclaiming how much I loved them, only to find the last one was empty. Yes, just a shell of a croquette and no filling inside. It was hilarious/devastating. If they weren't so good, I probably wouldn't have said anything but seeing as I really wanted that last one, I told the waitress who got another portion bought over pretty quickly. I forgot to check the bill to see if we were charged for the extra portion. I hope not. Everything else was ok. The pan catalan was tasty, but perhaps needed more soaking time for the tomato into the bread (and to cover the whole piece of bread as well). The chorizo was crispy and almost a little burnt. The halloumi was really good, but nothing really outstanding in terms of being anything different. Dishes I wasn't impressed with: the peaceful prawns and the patatas bravas. The prawns were really bland tasting, I couldn't taste any garlic. The patatas bravas was more like a potato stew than crispy individual potatoes. And the albondigas was really hard, too hard for a meatball and it was pretty unpleasant to try to eat. The sauce was really nice though. When eating a tapas meal it can be easy to bypass the disappointing dishes, but now I've come to write the review there was quite a few things I didn't think were great. In terms of a cool place to go for a drink, I would definitely go here again. It's a nice space and had a really nice Friday night vibe. But I would hesitate about going here for tapas - although I would order those croquettes again, for sure! Edited to add: I would head to Brutti Ma Buoni rather than here as I found it much better overall! It's their sister restaurant, also in Merchant City.

Merchant Square...so in he middle of the Merchant City in town! There's a variety of places to eat/drink in Merchant Square, but on the penultimate day of the Merchant City Festival, this was the only place with any free tables!! I hoped this wasn't a bad sign..!! ;-) Turned out after taking a seat ourselves (pretty sure there was a hostess to do the seating but it was mad busy and the table was empty!!) and looking at the menu, we were looking forward to having a good munch! They do a special lunch offer where you can get three tapas dishes for £8.95...bargain!! We decided to combine all of our choices so we could try a better variety of dishes! This turned out to be a FABULOUS idea! ;-) We ordered (you'll HAVE to forgive my spelling as I know NO Spanish, pretty much..!!) : 2 x patatas bravas, 2 x calamari, 1 x haggis nuggets, 1 x meatballs, 1 x queso croquettas, 1 x croquettas de polo and a wee tomato salad with manchego...we also got some extras of onion rings and chippies-we should have bothered with the extras!!! There was TAPAS-A-PLENTY; it seemed like the waitress just kept bringing our food out-LOL! Everything was delicious and well cooked...I was really impressed! I don't eat tapas all that often (I SHOULD!) but reckon I'll be back here again VERY soon! :-) We finished off lunch with some French Martinis which seemed strrrrrrong-NOT a complaint, by the way... I would DEFINITELY recommend this restaurant to anyone...and I'm doing MORE wedding shopping soon, so will pop back in!

I've been here a few times, not because I love it, just cos as I said it's the only standalone Spanish restaurant in the Merchant City. So for the same reason we went there again, but this time we only got offered the lunch menu. It's cheap for sure, £7.95 I think for three tapas, but here is the twist, beware of supplements and drinks prices. I opted for Albondigas, Chorizo, and Beef Ternera, and a side of Garlic Bread with Cheese. All were served with a smile, all were tasty, all were very small. The garlic bread was certainly not worth the extra £4.50-odd either, and my Spanish pint was a little expensive at nearly a fiver. I don't love being forced to choose a set menu, nor do I love sneaky charges that bump the price up. I'd rather pay the normal prices and get more food. Ultimately I left feeling slightly hungry and that makes me slightly grumpy, but the food was very decent, it's no El Sabor but it's still 3 stars.
