I must attest to this being one of the most ridiculously pretentious and sub standard eateries foisted upon the Glasgow populace. The experience of my friends and I when visiting this establishment on 30.12.10 was worse than anything I've experienced in even the most underdeveloped of countries I've visited. A pretentious atmosphere, sub-par food, polarised staff attitudes to service as evidenced by some staff actually working (the female on duty and the Irish(?) guy, whilst for example, another dramatically camp spike-haired male picked his nose, fixed his hair in his pocket mirror, and engaged in what we believed may have been an argument with his boyfriend on the telephone. All very entertaining! I could not help but laugh at all the younger Glaswegian "socialites" who showed up simply because of the restaurant's proximity to the other gay bars in the area. For our part, my friends and I simply popped in from the street because it looked like a place to get a quick meal, and we had actually eaten there last year with no complaints. Alas, this revisitation qualified as the worst mistake I could have made when visiting my home town.
One major irritation is that the food is so very bad, and yet some patrons delude themselves into thinking it is great , simply because of all the gay clientele who do patronise the place. As a gay-friendly hostelry, It is conveniently placed and yet offends the community it serves by serving food you wouldn't accept in any other establishment. In fact, when asked if we enjoyed our meals, none of which we even half-ate, and of course answering no, we were met with silence, and no offer to correct the failings of the stale-bread sandwiches, watered down salad dressings, discoloured lettuces, scalding hot soups etc. Having to ask for the bill on 4 occasions really was the icing on the proverbial cake, as it was met with an eye-rolling response from the immature spikey haired camp exhibitionist who was so dramatically engaged in a very public spat with someone else by telephone.
Abysmal food aside, had I been treated like a human being at Committee Room No9, I would not have felt compelled to write this review. I only feel empathy for the 2 working waiters and hope they find better jobs.
For those who have had a similar experience, please do not let it sour your trip to Glasgow; there are plenty of other fine restaurants in this great city. read more
