Gord and I had a late lunch yesterday at Piper Whiskey Bar in Glasgow. Gord had Chicken Balmoral (Chicken breast stuffed with haggis, wrapped in smoked bacon with a creamy whisky sauce. Served with thick cut chips or mashed potatoes.) and I had Chicken Goujons (Succulent strips of chicken, breaded then lightly fried until crispy, Served with chips and a side of sweet chili sauce.). Both were good. The staff was really friendly.

Whisky, what else is there? We'll.... Food. Good and music good. And the service is great. They brought us whisky. Cool bar with pub ambiance. Not too loud. But playing country? In a Scottish whisky bar eh. It works. Food was good. Tried the sampler and got minced meat fish and chips and steak and ale. All good. Jen had the Girder burger which was good. We'll be back.

So, I am conflicted about this place. They have an insanely extensive whiskey menu, however, very little description on what type they are, which makes it very difficult to order as the only people who knows them would be the waiters and the service is sooooo slow. You can hardly get hold of the waiters. The falafels were pretty good. I tried a couple of scotches. They have live music sometimes which is nice. Also, I hate it when they have such extensive alcohol menu and they don't have their prices in there. Also, they have rotating beers but you have to wait and ask the waiters what's available and as I already wrote, it's difficult to get ahold of them.

I have been here for lunch a couple of times, as it's near uni, and although more expensive than some other places in the area, the food is very nice. I rarely see other students in here, as it seems overlooked. There are often tourists though - being so close to George Squaer, and with a name like The Piper, it's bound to be popular! Both the decor and the food are quite traditional. Service is fast enough to make it a lunchtime contender, and the staff really can't do enough. If you want comfort food of a higher quality than Wetherspoonsy kind of places, then this is where to go!

I've only ever been in here once, and I had a really nice lunch. My friends and I had been at the winter festival on George Square and decided to duck in for some lunch - tradtional scottish fare was what we needed! Yes, it's tourist-tastic, but it felt nice and cosy - it wasn't full of stuffed Nessies, or See-you-Jimmy Hats or anything, but you can tell. The food was tasty, and the banter was flowing. A lovely place to spend the afternoon! And for the more daring? They advertise pole dancing and burlesque lessons. Wheeeee!

Nice place. Just went for a bite to eat and some alcoholic beverages. Also tried a whiskey flight which was very good.

Everyone was super nice, friendly and efficient. Ordered the lamb dinner, and beef short ribs. Both dishes were cooked to perfection. Got a Romanian red wine--never had Romanian wine before, but it was good. Great atmosphere, cute restaurant--loved the whisky display! We also went to their sister restaurant around the corner, Kelp. Amazing seafood! Same situation: it was crowded, we didn't have reservations, but they made room for us. Kelp was definitely a highlight of the food in Scotland. Beyond excellent! If you are in Glasgow, I would highly recommend both places.

Drinks were delightful. Service was stellar (and they were FULLY booked on a Thursday at 8pm; but we shared the 2 tiny hi-top tables near the bar and had an amazing dinner). Dessert was worth going for all on it's own!

I believe the mezzanine is free to hire during the week. First up - this place is really, really dark. I actually don't even know how it's so dark, even in the middle of the day. It really does take a bit for your eyes to adjust to the place. The decor is a bit outdated but nothing offensive and the mezzanine space is great as it's actually quite bright and cosy without being squashy (mind your head if you're tall!). There's a good wine list and they are reasonably priced. We had a few platters for our group - vegetarian and meat - and they both seemed to be very well received, particularly the red pepper hummus on the veggie platter. From what I remember, the platters are described as serving 2 people but I'd actually say it's more like 4 as they're really quite big. On the night we visited, it was really busy as it was Easter Thursday and so our reserved area was hotly sought-after by people looking for a seat. When I was leaving later in the night, there was lots of rowdy blokes downstairs so that was a little off-putting (but I was on my way out anyway). I expect that on a normal night this is a quite a pleasant bar to hang out in.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that all the food was that of the light bite nature - the pate and oatcakes went extremely well with my choice of wine (or so the waiter told me; to me, they were just incredibly tasty). Trying to choose which glass of wine I'd like was the hardest part - they have over 13 pouring wines, ranging from pinot grigios to prosecco...mmm... and that's not including the hundred other bottles we could have had (not that I would spend anywhere near £218 on a bottle of anything). It's a nice little place - it's got a rustic feel about it, and is frequented by a generally older crowd (ok, I'd say maybe 75% of the customers had greying or white hair, which isn't a bad thing, but I'm 20-something, and it's not EXACTLY my kinda place). I can see why it's popular - the food, the wine, and the ambience - and it has made me actually reconsider my initial statement - however, I may be a few years off becoming a regular, as yet.

Searching online for somewhere that was just a little bit different for a special occasion, we came across Le Petit Cochon and liked the look of the seafood choices on the menu. It's just a few steps off the main drag in Radnor Street (opposite the end of Kelvin Way), and seems to have been a burger bar in a former life. It was a Monday night, so they weren't exactly busy, and so the service was friendly and attentive, and we were soon tucking into our starters. We had the hot smoked salmon and asparagus as a starter, and straight away I realised that the food was going to be great, as the asparagus was cooked to perfection. Often the ends of the stems can get a bit stringy, but not here. Not stringy and not limp, just perfect crunch. For mains, we both had the pollock, which is a fish you don't see that much here, although it is becoming more popular. The portion size seemed a bit small, but in retrospect it was just right as it left room for some pudding! Again, the veg were cooked to 'al dente' perfection. The whole was washed down with a half-carafe of very dry white wine from their extensive wine list, and we left replete and happy.

However, the weather forecast was for rain! After a bit of head-scratching, we realised that Princes Square offered the perfect solution; we could sit 'outside' the restaurant but still be 'inside' the vast atrium of Princes Square and protected from the rain. Perfect! Sadly, we weren't allowed any alcohol as current restrictions prohibit drinking outside. I know, I know... we were still technically 'inside', but I wasn't prepared to argue the point. I'm not usually a huge fan of tapas eating - I prefer a more conventional starter/main course style of ordering, but with three of us we were able to order a good selection of dishes - their recommended three each - providing a good smorgasbord for us to choose from. The dishes were all very tasty, I particularly liked the Cocido de Judias Blancas (aka bean stew), and Patatas Bravas are always a favourite. I was a little disappointed with the Dorada a la Parilla (sea bass); given that it was one of the more expensive items on the menu, the portion size was a bit measly. It was, however, cooked just right. Clean plates all round and we were all satisfyingly full afterwards. Apart from a minor glitch on the drinks order - they forgot to bring one and I had to go and remind them - everything else was fine. So a thumbs up from us, and I'll happily return here in future.

However we needn't have worried, everyone was in such good spirits, probably as a result of having downed plenty of them. When we went to the bar, feeling rather cheeky, we ordered a shot. I was amazed when my £1.50 bought me: not just any shot, but a small glass with several unmeasured glugs that were more than a mouthful. Amazing! The cheesy DJ added to this place's old fashioned family charm, with everyone up on the dancefloor by the end of the night, ourselves included. You can't help but fall in love with this place, for its old fashioned family hospitality and not so measured drinks that make your money go further, and your dance moves all the more ridiculous.
