The best wines are the ones we drink with Yelpers
Briony C.

I assumed All Bar One wasn't my kind of place, so I'd never been there before. I was wrong (it happens, sometimes)! It's a super busy place on a Friday, and especially on a bank holiday weekend. It's a bit of a business crowd with folk who've knocked off work, and when we arrived at 7pm there was quite a few people who were steaming drunk bumping around the bar which could be a bit off-putting. The amazing Clare S had reserved us some seats and the waitress booted the people sitting at our table which was nice. Our waitress told us that we had table service all night and to order all drinks/food from her - what a god-send in a heaving bar. I wasn't drinking (epic fail) so my review is mostly about the food. Now, I won't lie, I didn't expect much. The menu is interesting, sure, but I just didn't think it would deliver in the flavour department. I was wrong. We tried a selection of the small dishes and all of them were either really good, or outstanding. My favourites were the chicken skewers (with a delicious grilled flavour), the little mezze which had a really lovely fresh pomegranate salad in it, the truffled goats cheese (massive portion!) and the patatas bravas. I would go out of my way to go back here for food, it was that good. They do 3 dishes for £15 or 5 for £25, or they had a special deal where you got a bottle of fizz + 3 dishes for £25. They also had some wines which were no longer on the menu reduced to very, very reasonable prices. I have to say, I really enjoyed All Bar One and would head back for food and drinks again. Service was exceptional and our waitress never took longer than a couple of minutes with our drinks. They also have a good range of non-alcoholic drinks if you're driving.

A glass of prosecco! Only £4.95.

I have said before, and I will say it again, I am not the hugest fan of All Bar One. However, this is the second time in a few weeks I have visited an ABO, and again was pleasantly surprised. I met a Scottish friend at Central train station on arrival into Glasgow. It was 8.30pm and having been sat on a train from Manchester since 5.15pm was very much in need of a drink. We took a short walk and decided on the All Bar One. We didn't eat so can only comment on the drinks. I had prosecco, which was £4.95 per glass, and my friend had a daiquiri, which I think was only £5 or so. Thought this was good value, so we had a couple of rounds. The place had a nice feel about it and seemed to have a lot of the after work crowd in (albeit they were out quite late after work by that point). The staff were nice and service was quick. Overall, I'd say this is a good one to visit and I am definitely starting to change my mind about this chain.

After deciding on All Bar One as a venue for the first Fine for Wine night (essentially an opportunity to go out, try some new wines and have a giggle), I was intrigued to see how All Bar One would shape up on a busy Friday night. It always looks SUPER busy in here, and I've never popped in for a drink, so I wasn't sure what I expected. As we arrived, we were seated at a couple of tables (but boy am I glad I reserved!)...and heard that thankfully we had a server for the night, and so had no need to navigate the really busy bar area. After some great wine recommendations - we also got the chance to choose from wines now reduced and off the menu, lovely touch - we ordered a load of small plates. Patatas bravas, salmon gravalax and prawns on top of a whole load of things I can't even remember. I hadn't considered how this place would be for food, and I'll definitely come back one night for a proper meal. The only reason this place doesn't get more stars, is mainly for the over-crowded 'is it a bar, is it a club' kinda vibe - like, it's seriously busy in here, and for that reason it could sometimes be hard to hear the people at the table with us. I'll definitely come back here though, and want to sample even more of their pretty extensive wine collection.

Pretty good nachos and really great halloumi fries! Service was just ok...Kind of had to flag him down at the end to pay, but the difference in UK and American service is still super new to me ha ha

Had three of their tapas to share, and their chips as well. The chorizo with roast potatoes, which soaked in the oil with so much flavor. The fried goat cheese was kind of immaculate; thick, chewy and flavorful. my favorite was probably the roast duck with mango served on lettuce leaves not a whole lot of beer selection, but you got all the house favorites available. we got there twice before between 10 and 10:10 pm, and they had closed the kitchen. so if you want to enjoy any of their menu, i highly recommend getting there well before 9:45pm. great service though, friendly bartenders and servers. great spot for light, well cooked food and a relaxed bar, but a fun atmosphere

Pancakes with banana, strawberries & blueberries

My husband and I aren't in town alone (okay we had the 4 month old with us but still) much these days but when he smashed his iPhone for the 2nd time we decided to use the opportunity to go out for brunch while it was repaired. We wandered around and tried several options (none of whom actually had a brunch menu) before we settled on All Bar One. They had a big sign out front promoting their any breakfast main + cocktail for £10 so we knew we'd be good to go. There was a fair selection of breakfast/brunchy mains and breakfast cocktails on offer. My husband went for the Full Breakfast plus potato hash and I opted for Pancakes with a side of bacon. The husband's plate was all but licked clean so I'm going to say he enjoyed it. I did notice his toast was actually nice sliced bread rather than slices of toast which seems nice to me. My pancakes were, okay. They clearly weren't made to order and had been made earlier in the day and reheated. I ate them but they were rather disappointing. I should have learned by now that I'll never find proper pancakes in the UK but it's a lesson I keep forgetting. The real star of breakfast was the hash--it was AMAZING. Totally like real American breakfast potatoes--salty, crispy and the spinach was a twist I hadn't had before. Our two breakfasts, a coffee and the add on of hash came in at under £20 so not too shabby. If we go back again we might leave the car and give the cocktails a try as that £10 deal is a great offer and the cocktails sounded yummy. Plenty of space to get a pram in and lots of tables so an easy option for brunch in town.

Simple, I know, but my favourite thing about coming here is getting smarties with your coffee. I am not sure why this appeals to me, maybe it reminds me of being a kid and getting a small treat you weren't allowed too much of. Other pluses Really nice building. polite staff. Negative Quite pricey beer Food is average, occasionally good. Right, back to the smarties.

Vegan platter

Went here for a work function last night and have to say I was very impressed. A buffet was provided and as I'm vegan I emailed ahead to check if there would be a vegan options available. Well they only went and made me a separate wee platter and it was delightful. Stuffed cucumbers, lettuce with a cous cous salad on top, houmous, sundried tomatoes, and some delish tortillas and a wee pot of berries. The omnivores I was with were raving about the food they were eating too and there was plenty of it. The only minor negative point I would make is we had booked and paid to have an area up stairs and there was about 70 of us. The space wasn't very big and there was 2 other bookings in the same area reserved. I didn't think the area that we had was big enough for the number of people there. I would suggest if such a large group is reserving the upstairs then it should be the whole upstairs area entirely. Especially as we had paid £15pp.

Tapas

My Mum and I fancied drinks and some light bites on Saturday evening having been shopping in town all day. Still not knowing places in Glasgow, but knowing All Bar One from Southampton so opted to go in here. It was busy with not a lot of free tables. Mum and I spotted one but the group behind us rather rudely stormed in front and took it. Karma helped us as a couple over at a window table were just leaving and caught our eye and so we sat there. The window table was further away from the bar and perfect for people watching. Our waitress, Heather was lovely. Our bottle of prosecco appeared quickly and my porn star martini cocktail soon after. It comes with a shot of prosecco which is rather odd but cool none the less. The table was a bit small so 5 tapas later was tight. We had patatas bravas, prawn tempura, prawns in garlic and chilli oil, and 2 types of chicken skewers. The food was excellent. My personal favourite was the prawns in garlic and chill oil. All Bar One was the perfect spot for some drinks and food. The table service was lovely to have as the queue at the bar was rather long. Will definitely be revisiting.

I believe the mezzanine is free to hire during the week. First up - this place is really, really dark. I actually don't even know how it's so dark, even in the middle of the day. It really does take a bit for your eyes to adjust to the place. The decor is a bit outdated but nothing offensive and the mezzanine space is great as it's actually quite bright and cosy without being squashy (mind your head if you're tall!). There's a good wine list and they are reasonably priced. We had a few platters for our group - vegetarian and meat - and they both seemed to be very well received, particularly the red pepper hummus on the veggie platter. From what I remember, the platters are described as serving 2 people but I'd actually say it's more like 4 as they're really quite big. On the night we visited, it was really busy as it was Easter Thursday and so our reserved area was hotly sought-after by people looking for a seat. When I was leaving later in the night, there was lots of rowdy blokes downstairs so that was a little off-putting (but I was on my way out anyway). I expect that on a normal night this is a quite a pleasant bar to hang out in.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that all the food was that of the light bite nature - the pate and oatcakes went extremely well with my choice of wine (or so the waiter told me; to me, they were just incredibly tasty). Trying to choose which glass of wine I'd like was the hardest part - they have over 13 pouring wines, ranging from pinot grigios to prosecco...mmm... and that's not including the hundred other bottles we could have had (not that I would spend anywhere near £218 on a bottle of anything). It's a nice little place - it's got a rustic feel about it, and is frequented by a generally older crowd (ok, I'd say maybe 75% of the customers had greying or white hair, which isn't a bad thing, but I'm 20-something, and it's not EXACTLY my kinda place). I can see why it's popular - the food, the wine, and the ambience - and it has made me actually reconsider my initial statement - however, I may be a few years off becoming a regular, as yet.

Searching online for somewhere that was just a little bit different for a special occasion, we came across Le Petit Cochon and liked the look of the seafood choices on the menu. It's just a few steps off the main drag in Radnor Street (opposite the end of Kelvin Way), and seems to have been a burger bar in a former life. It was a Monday night, so they weren't exactly busy, and so the service was friendly and attentive, and we were soon tucking into our starters. We had the hot smoked salmon and asparagus as a starter, and straight away I realised that the food was going to be great, as the asparagus was cooked to perfection. Often the ends of the stems can get a bit stringy, but not here. Not stringy and not limp, just perfect crunch. For mains, we both had the pollock, which is a fish you don't see that much here, although it is becoming more popular. The portion size seemed a bit small, but in retrospect it was just right as it left room for some pudding! Again, the veg were cooked to 'al dente' perfection. However, the weather forecast was for rain! After a bit of head-scratching, we realised that Princes Square offered the perfect solution; we could sit 'outside' the restaurant but still be 'inside' the vast atrium of Princes Square and protected from the rain. Perfect! Sadly, we weren't allowed any alcohol as current restrictions prohibit drinking outside. I know, I know... we were still technically 'inside', but I wasn't prepared to argue the point. I'm not usually a huge fan of tapas eating - I prefer a more conventional starter/main course style of ordering, but with three of us we were able to order a good selection of dishes - their recommended three each - providing a good smorgasbord for us to choose from. The dishes were all very tasty, I particularly liked the Cocido de Judias Blancas (aka bean stew), and Patatas Bravas are always a favourite. I was a little disappointed with the Dorada a la Parilla (sea bass); given that it was one of the more expensive items on the menu, the portion size was a bit measly. It was, however, cooked just right. Clean plates all round and we were all satisfyingly full afterwards. Apart from a minor glitch on the drinks order - they forgot to bring one and I had to go and remind them - everything else was fine. So a thumbs up from us, and I'll happily return here in future.

I was amazed when my £1.50 bought me: not just any shot, but a small glass with several unmeasured glugs that were more than a mouthful. Amazing!
