And his costs were 'below modest' (I have NO COMPLAINTS - though I was sad that his best efforts - even his expert referral to a DriveSavers in California - could not save precious family data and photos). to be concise: Positives: * fix laptop hardware *fair price * decent communication Negatives: * took much longer than expected. To be long winded: my 1.5 year old gateway laptop decided it did not want to turn on, - after calling many repair shops I discovered many places do not even work with laptop hardware issues- iTech did! so Plus 1 for them. I took my computer here and Rich diagnosed it with a faulty motherboard. If you chose to get the work done with them, the diagnostic fee is waived which is good, and the labor/parts were fairly priced. Rich was good at staying on top of communicating with me about where my laptop stood on the repair, unfortunately I kept being told it would be done friday... then on friday... o no, maybe Monday. Then once the motherboard was fixed, it turned out the touch pad had also somehow went- In the end it took 2 months to fix! And was a lot more money than the initial estimate. To be fair- that was not their fault, there were unforeseen problems that kept delaying things, and most of the hold up was waiting on parts. Rich did discount some labor in lieu of making me wait so long. and now here I am typing on my once-again-wonderfully functioning laptop! and restored some needed data for school before the fix for free. Just a warning if you go: the Office is in a house. Its a white house, on a random side street with a red door, you have to go to the side door and press the doorbell labeled "B", which I didn't figure out until I got there. read more

They did not actually do the work - but the way they handled my frantic emergency call was stellar. First of all, the owner answered the phone - like a person does. And then he listened while I ran my mouth about our emergency PC meltdown " all the files for a small business inside a dead Compaq, etc. etc. ..." I do run on, especially when excited. He pointed out the promo coupon on his website, calmly explained rates and when he would get to the job and why. When I said I would be looking around still, because I had a serious time crunch he wished me luck, with no irony. I then called Computer Loft an they were able to commit to putting hard drive in an enclosure with a USB hook up for $80 bucks, while I waited. (More about them at their site) Soon after, Rich called back to say that he could re-arrange his day to help us, if I had not found someone else. When I told him about Computer Loft - he complimented their work and wished me well. It's been years since I wrote a Yelp review, but I figure computer repair is one of the areas that people need advice about the most. I took my Sony laptop to Rich at Boston iTech because it was overheating and would just shut down frequently. Rich diagnosed it as dried up thermal paste and I kicked myself for not figuring it out on my own. It was a pretty simple problem to fix. I also had an Esc key which fell off and the whole laptop was dirty. I wanted to clean it up so I could sell it on eBay. Overall, I was impressed with how knowledgeable he seemed to be and the service was friendly and courteous. I just have two small complaints. First is that the repair took much longer than the original 3-5 days quoted. I wasn't in any rush so it wasn't that big of a deal for me but I did have to chase him up about it after waiting a week to hear from him. The repair took another week. And when I picked up the laptop, the Esc key was clearly still not fixed. At best, it was an inattention to detail that allowed that to happen but even that isn't exactly great. I had to come back a few days later to get that fixed. In total, it was more than two weeks since drop-off time. It seems that this is a one-man operation and I'm sure that he gets very busy at times, but you should keep that in mind if timeliness is important to you. read more

I'm so relieved to find a trustworthy, effective and prompt service that I can actually afford! Not to mention LOCAL! Here's the story: My laptop and I were fighting, but I was afraid to take it somewhere to get it diagnosed and poked; afraid of the cost, afraid of winding up with an eye-rolling IT guy who speaks in C++ and html and possibly not English, afraid of being judged for my lacking computery abilities, etc. I called up Boston iTech and had a lovely conversation about my needs, their procedures and an estimated cost. My problem was fixable! And the staff person who helped me was ever so human and kind! Rich Dopazo took excellent care of my Acer, kept in touch with status updates, and saved the embarrassing clump of cat hair he found in my keyboard to show me how my poor laptop had been suffering. He offered advice on how to keep it running more smoothly, and even gave me directions to clean it up on my own without costing myself billable time. I was also able to snatch a Yelp deal to help with the cost. It turns out the price was more than fair (affordable without the deal) and I found myself thinking, "Whoa, I can actually afford to get my computer fixed in this city. Who knew?" People have commented on their repairs taking a while; I was very pleased with the quick turnaround. So there. Nothin' but happiness and gratitude from this customer! Well, I had a problem with getting a desktop to work, when after replacing a broken-down hard drive, found the system unable to see the new one I put in. I was thinking it was something really bad like part of my motherboard shorting out or the power supply conking out. After a few hours of frustration, I put a call to Boston iTech and had my computer dropped off. Rich was able to quickly trace the problem down to not enough power being fed directly and fixed the root problem. The price was right and reasonable for the service and it was done quickly, finished over the weekend, a 1 business day turnover. Rich is friendly, no-nonsense, and competent. I had (serious) water damage on my motherboard, and Rich took apart my computer, cleaned it up, replaced the keyboard, and got it running good as new again. He even helped me - as a coutesy - to fix a logon file that had become corrupt. When my Dell got devoured by a virus, I went to Rich. Not only did he clean up my computer, set up my external hard drive, and re-load all my files (including Office!), he installed a set of security programs that have thus worked flawlessly. Additionally, the repairs wound up being way more expensive than he had initially projected (due to the virus being way more embedded than it seemed at first), and when I expressed that I was in a bit of a financial bind, he knocked some money off the price. Really a great thing to do. Only two complaints (and the only reasons I gave less than five stars): 1) My computer was returned with a fairly large scratch on the case. Relatively minor, but a little unprofessional. 2) The timeframe for repair was less than accurate. I would have appreciated knowing that it was going to take three weeks from the get-go, rather than the two days initially projected. read more

It wasn't terrible experience, but still a complete waste of time and money for me. I had a faulty video card and based on the user reviews, i went to Richard to get it fixed. After 3-5 business days (and he always took the full time when providing a time range like that) he did in fact confirm that I had a faulty video card, This cost like $75, for not even telling me anything new. We then agreed for him to repair it (another 5 business days), and that would cost either $90 or $180 based on whether it was successful or not. ...And it wasn't successful, but I should have seen that coming as he didn't appear very knowledgeable about the stuff he was talking about, but that may be just about video cards and not everything in general. He then further tried to rip me off by suggesting for me to buy a new video card that he would install for an additional $70. That is a ridiculous price for something that takes 5 minutes in total and you can learn how to do it after watching a 3 minute long video on Youtube. And the whole time we were communicating, he tried selling me additional stuff by saying something like "it is only going to be additional $90 after the Yelp coupon bla bla, you should do it bla bla" Btw, he lives in a sketchy house and never lets you in his basement, which is his workshop. I had to talk to him in a small, dark-lit hallway, while standing up. How did get so many good reviews? read more

One day, my Sony Vaio stopped charging its battery. Alarmed, I paid a visit to the Tech Center in Brookline, MA, and the guys there told me that 1) the power connector was loose, and 2) the battery was probably dead. I'm not the most tech-savvy person out there, so I took their word for it. "Could you take a look at the hardware?" I asked them, and "No" was the curt reply. They insisted that the problem was common and I needed not to worry. So I went ahead with the repairs ($90) and bought myself a new battery ($75). Needless to say, the battery still didn't charge. Friends told me that it was probably a hardware problem (some loose connector), and that I would need to fork out $300+ to get the whole thing fixed. Great. This is where Rich and Boston iTech come in. I sent Rich a quick email, and he immediately responded saying that his shop had seen these kinds of issues before and that he'd be able to fix my laptop at a much lower rate than replacing the hardware. I paid him a quick visit, dropped off my laptop, and promptly got it back less than a week later, ready to go again. Good repairs, reasonable rates, and all of that aside, Boston iTech's customer service is simply top class. Rich is friendly, understanding, and attentive to his customers' needs. He also sends you regular updates on the status of your repairs, which is always appreciated. My experience with Boston iTech was a far cry from the Tech Center. Recently my computer got infected with viruses. The operating system shut down completely so I couldn't even install an updated antivirus software. (Unfortunately, I didn't back up any of my files before the crash.)
