I arrived after putting in an order over the phone "it'll be 15 minutes" they said. Walking in the kitchen was empty with two patties of meat just sitting on the grill. A 20 something year old girl walks in switches the sign to closed and tells me they are closed now, it was 4:23pm. I said I was just told my food would be ready in 15 minutes 15 minutes ago, she said "we're closed" I said "this place sucks now" she called me "an ugly f*gg*t" and said "I hope you get hit by a car on your bike" while giving me two birds. We used to get food from here fairly often. The guy who prepared it made really great food and the pre-packaged mousse cups were also tasty. They were closed last week but we decided to get it yeaterday. Apparently the usual cook is either gone or away and the food was horrible. The serving size was smaller, they put tabasco sauce or something gross and spicy on the chicken/rice dinner and it was barely edible. Worse were the mousse cups which after we got home discovered they had green mold all over the top of them (not visible until opened). They must have just left the food in the refrigerator for the week+ they were closed. I should have taken a photo but it was so gross I threw them out. What a waste of money. Unless the good cook comes back, we are never going there again. So disappointed that a place that was so good is now horrible. read more

Got delivery of a couple of items and everything arrived within an hour of ordering. I really enjoyed the grilled chicken sandwich. It was filled with white onions, carrots, lettuce, and a couple of sauces. I wish there had been more sauce (not just in the center) and if there had been sour cream I didn't see or taste any, but whatever the red sauce was was really good. The boyfriend is Balkan so coming here for a pljeskavica is a must. The price has gone up a few dollars in the past years but it's totally worth it. This joint is a small hole in the wall but is fantastic. Pljeskavica is a grilled burger made Bosnian style with lamb and beef served with sour cream, onions, lettuce, tomato and avjar (an eggplant based sauce). You can order the regular burger or the one that has cheese inside the meat. Pljeskavicas are not as good as the ones I've had in the former Yugoslavia but it will do for NYC. A tiny place that only has a couple of chairs. Of course we got the Pljekavica, or Bosnian Burger, with everything. Everything includes lettuce, tomato, red pepper sauce and chopped onion. The patty itself is the size of a dinner plate, but flattened out thin with a blend of lamb and beef . The pita that the burger is served in is light and delicious. The burger itself screams for some salt and pepper, it seemed a bit on the bland side. You definitely need all the toppings for some flavor. All in all in was a good burger experience, maybe next time I'll smuggle in some salt and pepper. read more

Should've asked for more Ajvar on my pljeskavica but but that's just my preference. I wish the place was closer to home, it took us some time to drive to it. However I will definitely come by again but next time will try ćevapi since their meat is very good. For the type of place this joint goes for I give them 5 stars. Jared eats cheap and ethnically diverse and I smile. These 2 words are of the utmost importance to me. Bosna Express seemed like a Diamond in the Ridgewood rough, and despite my best efforts to rate without being overly partial to gastronauts who value diversity and economy, it really is. This is 95% due to the hamburger patty which was some of the more underwhelming Balkin or Middle Eastern Meat I've had in recent memory. The sandwich, architecturally, is a wonder. Brilliant flatbread stuffed with meat, lettuce, tomato, onion, white and read sauce...like a schwarma in burger form that's been stamped out a few times. The ingredients are fresh. But nothing in the ingredients is WOW. Not the bread and not the sauce. Rather, everything is just a perfect accommodation to a sandwich that would be nothing short of miraculous if it had savory meat. Question to friends: "Did the meat have taste?" I read about the Pljekavica, or "Bosna Burger", on a food blog in Queens, and due to my penchant for gluttony and hamburgers themselves, I knew that I had to go and give it a try. This place is somewhat of a trek to get to from Manhattan, requiring that you take the L to the M train, or simply the M if you live in Lower Manhattan, but rest assured that it's not 'that' awful of a trip and it goes by fairly quickly. The restaurant is literally right next to the stairs off of the Forest Ave. stop, so no worries there either. This place is TINY, and by tiny I don't mean something similar to small storefront. There's only one booth that could probably seat four people if they squeezed in, and a small counter (if you could call it that) which could probably get one or two more people in there. It's a tight squeeze, and if it's not dead in there like it was when I arrived I strongly suggest taking this to go. The "Bosna Burger" ($8.00), as another reviewer pointed out, isn't really a burger in the traditional sense of the word, but more of a thin sausage patty that is absolutely huge. It comes on this amazing bread that is filled with said burger long with lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and another red sauce which I knew the name of...but do not remember right now. It's the size of a dinner plate, and absolutely humongous, yet that being said I ate the entire thing. It's a very hearty dinner that is certainly unusual and satisfying. The mix of the sausage patty with the sour cream was unusual for me in itself, and combined with said mysterious red sauce, it was taken to a whole new level. It's served on a puffy Bosnian pita that's been nicely warmed. It can be ordered with a yoghurt based sauce but I prefer it with diced onions and Ajvar, the red sauce of Marshall Tito. At first glance the finished product looks like a personal pizza but it's much better than that. The spicing is the same as the Bosnian cevapi sausage links and doesn't need much doctoring. I put on the barest sprinkling of salt and if I'm feeling frisky I add some red pepper flakes. The burger at Bosna Express relies on it's spicing and the blend of beef and lamb rather than sheer size. It's only about 8 oz. It would never replace a regular burger but it's a wonderful change of pace. When Pat LaFrieda starts making these they'll go for $30. In the meantime you can buy one for $8.00 in Queens. read more

It took quite some time to cross this place off the list, as my will to head down the M train to the penultimate stop is not very high. One Saturday, though, with the weather fair and the desire for any time of party low, I came over here. There's no competition for the flat, spicy burgers of the Balkans in Brooklyn. The two other times I've had it were at an Albanian restaurant in the Bronx and then at a shack in Slovenia, where the meat inside was horse. Both of these wound up being better than Bosna Express, which I'm afraid using too many ordinary ingredients in the service of a sometimes ordinary dish. My advice is to throw out the lettuce and tomato, an American addition that adds neither flavor nor texture. Then ensure that there's plenty of kajmak (a thick cream that's like a cheese) and ajvar sauce. Keep the raw, sliced onions - these add necessary crunch. Ensure the bread is well-toasted along with the meat. This will ensure plenty of room to soak up the flavors inside the patty. Unless you are planning this to be the sole meal of the day, you can split the burger, which is called a pljeskavica on the menu and in the Balkans, with a friend. This is nice food, but if you have the patience to head to the Bronx, it can be better. read more

As an ex-pat, Its hard to find good Cevapi in Rego Park. I just happened to be in Ridgewood, doing some ethnic food shopping, and I found this little discreet storefront. I must admit that it intrigued me, as I usually get my Cevapi/Pljeskavica fill in Astoria after work. As I entered, I gave a welcoming "Zdravo", only to find the Mexican guy looking at me funny. I guess he didn't speak Croatian/Serbian. So, after a brief, awkward moment, I went with the large order of Cevapi to go, with onions, and a side order of Kajmac(a funky, creamy cheese topping). Trust me, always get the Kajmac to go, at any place that you are taking the order to go. The portion is huge, 10 thick, pinky sized pieces of nicely grilled lamb/beef. The flatbread is slightly reminiscent of the one back home, but someone here needs to season the meat. Other than the fact that the meat was juicy in the inside, it was bland. Where's the salt and pepper. Back home, the first items on the dinner table was the salt and pepper, then everything else. I guess if you a townie, this is a good place to come to, but I think that I will continue to satisfy my craving for home food in Astoria. read more

It's the only Balkan grill of this kind in the area so that makes it the best . It is pretty decent . Cevapi are very good , bread is fresh , pljeskavica can pass because you cannot find it anywhere . Yogurt is great , sweets are also pretty good , peper / garlic salad.... It should be 5 stars but there are a few things that are not typical . First taxes on cash payments . I understand taxes on CC payments , there is a sign stating that every CC payment comes with a tax and that makes sense but tax on cash payment is weird. If I buy a sandwich in any other deli I pay whatever was the price on the board . Second when you order over the phone you give all the additions right away over the phone even if you have 100 cevapi order and are coming to pick it up . You cannot get cevapi on the plate and some onions and kajmak on the side like it's usual . You get the sides only if you take it inside of a bread and we don't really eat cevapi like that always . The fact that you can't choose is really weird because it's absolutely the same except its separated in a plate .Third, lettuce should not be like this , it's better without lettuce if that's same shreded dry letuce like in Deli's. Balkan letuce is different and it's not hard to make it . I don't know, sometimes I feel scamed when I buy there and cant get it Balkan way with add ons on the side if I want it like that . Kajmak on 1 side of the bread and ajvar on the other side not one over another ... So Simple, So Tiny but yet so delicious. The menu consists of one page, but you don't really need a menu when you know whats good. Balkan food is what I grew up with but this classifies of more like Balkan Soul food.... go for either pleskavica (the burger) or cevapi. Pair it with a homemade yogurt and then make sure you're close to a place where you can take a nap (for the full experience). They say its Mediterranean,but it's really Bosnian food located near the L train in Ridgewood Queens. They were on one of the food shows. Known for their Bosnian burger Very Nice. Don't go with a large group of people because it only seats 4 people. But the Bosnian burger is oh so amazing. It's topped with their own sauce not ketchup. I was directed to Bosna from Yelp and the good reviews left here. I was playing a concert in the area and looked up good eats in the area. I was familiar with this type of "burger" from some food stands in eastern Europe. In particular, there is a food stand in Belgrade called "Loki" that makes giant sandwich patties out of pork, beef and lamb. Bosna Express wasn't quite as insane as that but it was still pretty amazing. I got there just before closing and ordered a Bosna Burger with everything. I also got a Cokta, which is a cola made in Slovenia that is very popular in eastern Europe. It doesn't have caffeine or high fructose corn syrup. The burger was ready in minutes and was DELICIOUS. It was really big- it took up an entire plate by itself. But I was very hungry and it hi the spot. For $8 this really can't be beat. read more
