Great spot for some fish and chips on a chilly day neat the water. Packed house, but friendly…read moreservice. Watch for a great 2 for 1 deal! (Didn't see until ordering.) Good deal for kids. We would go again - fresh!

This busy takeout place near the Howth waterfront specializes in fried fish. Three kinds were…read moreavailable that day: cod, haddock, and hake. I don't know if I could tell these apart except from the shape so I asked which was the most popular and was told cod. So I ordered the cod fish & chips and a side of mushy peas. I ordered at the counter and waited about 5 minutes for my number to be called then took the box outside to eat on the lawn near the water, keeping a careful watch on the aggressive seagulls. The portion was good, the fish was fresh like just off the boat, the batter light and mildly seasoned, and no disagreeable flavors from the frying oil. Unfortunately the batter was inconsistent: thin and crunchy in places, thicker and soggy in others. The fries were just ok, starchy. So overall only average. I had to try mushy peas again, just my second time. They tasted and looked just like they sound: mashed up green peas. No mint flavoring added this time. Fine for what they were, but I just don't get it. I think I prefer coleslaw with my fish&chips but I don't think it's offered here. Perhaps coleslaw is an American thing? So only average overall. But I'd consider returning if I wanted a quick takeout lunch as the other restaurants in the area were more formal sit-down places.

I'd read some glowing reviews of this fish & chip shop so I kept it in mind. I don't eat this food…read morevery often now but I did eat a lot of it in my early teens, but that's a whole other story. So pulled up into the car park, two degrees outside and 'are we human or are we dancer' coming out of the radio as I turned off the engine. First duty was into a nearby supermarket for a soft white bread pan. When it's fish n chips it has to be tea, bread and lots of butter. A good sprinkling of salt on the fish n chips too. Carbs, animal fats and hardly a healthy calorie in sight. So into the chip shop to a friendly welcome from a man, certainly didn't look like Paula but it's a funny old world so I thought better than to ask. Two fish and chips please (or as we used to say: two fish suppers) £11.60 was required. I checked it was cod and he almost seemed taken aback at my question - he said, 'of course'. I waited a bit pleased that the food was being cooked to order. The portions of cod were huge, with fresh, white chunky and skinless meat. If you aren't sure how fresh cod tastes try it here as it's very fresh. I thought each chip portion was a tad mean but once home and in the plate it was generous enough. The food is cooked in beef dripping. There is no substitute good enough, groundnut, peanut, rapeseed, olive, corn oils none come close. The batter was towards thin and I like that, and to be fair the food sat in a take out bag until I got home and put out the plates and do on. Despite this the food was excellent, perfectly good food and still quite warm. A chip buttie was a must. Now I've eaten some of the finest foods on earth but I gotta tell ya the taste of a white soft pan bread chip buttie with a bit of salt and a generous slap of butter is wonderful made all the better with hot tea. The glowing reviews are right, it's a great place. The next time I want very good fish & chips I know where to go. Maybe next time I'll sit in and have it at its very best. Who knows now that oil prices have fallen the prices here should drop too.

They have the best oysters! The plan for the day was to drive to Howth and explore the town. But…read moreheavy rains and wind ruined those plans. Since we were on this side of the town, we decided to make the most of it and look for a meal of seafood. I had Octopussy's Tapas bookmarked when researching for the trip, so we decided to stop in for lunch. It was a Thursday at around 1:30, and the restaurant was almost full. It's a very small restaurant and it's mostly high top tables with bar stools, so it wasn't exactly looking baby-friendly, since had our 8-month old and a stroller with us. Luckily, they have a small back room (literally a room that can probably seat 4-6 people) that was available, and they seat us back there. It was nice and cozy, and cute - decorated like you were on a ship. Here is what we ordered: -Carlingford Oysters (served in the shell with fresh lemon) - these oysters were everything! They were big, shucked properly, and tasted super fresh. It didn't need anything but the lemon but they did recommend us trying their housemade hot sauce. We did and we loved it, and ended up buying a bottle to take home. We also ended up ordering some more oysters for dessert (lol) -Seafood Chowder (squid, mussels, smoked coley, & prawns served with homemade brown bread) - this was full of seafood. It is heavy though since chowder is cream-based so I would recommend sharing this, as opposed to ordering one on your own. The brown bread was also very nice -Seafood Paella (paella rice, chorizo, mussels, gambas, squid rings, and smoked coley) - another dish filled with seafood. They don't skimp out here! I could have done without the squid rings (they tasted rubber-bandy, like they're from frozen), and the smoked coley. I'm not a huge fan of smoked foods. I didn't really taste it in the chowder - maybe the cream covered it up, but I was able to taste it more in the paella -Whiskey Scallops (cooked in whiskey butter) - very rich but the scallops were good. You definitely want to dip some of the brown bread in this sauce There were so many other dishes we wanted to try but we had to stop ourselves from ordering too much for two people. Overall, it was a great meal and at these prices for seafood?! You really can't beat it.
