This busy takeout place near the Howth waterfront specializes in fried fish. Three kinds were available that day: cod, haddock, and hake. I don't know if I could tell these apart except from the shape so I asked which was the most popular and was told cod. So I ordered the cod fish & chips and a side of mushy peas. I ordered at the counter and waited about 5 minutes for my number to be called then took the box outside to eat on the lawn near the water, keeping a careful watch on the aggressive seagulls. The portion was good, the fish was fresh like just off the boat, the batter light and mildly seasoned, and no disagreeable flavors from the frying oil. Unfortunately the batter was inconsistent: thin and crunchy in places, thicker and soggy in others. The fries were just ok, starchy. So overall only average. I had to try mushy peas again, just my second time. They tasted and looked just like they sound: mashed up green peas. No mint flavoring added this time. Fine for what they were, but I just don't get it. I think I prefer coleslaw with my fish&chips but I don't think it's offered here. Perhaps coleslaw is an American thing? So only average overall. During our cruise of the British Isles, we explored many areas of the United Kingdom and ate lots of Fish & Chips. When we visited Dublin, Ireland, my wife contacted one of her friends who lives in this fine city. He toured us all over the area. The last place he drove us to was the town of Howth, Ireland where Beshoff Bros is located. He wanted us to have the best fish & chips in the area. He hyped Beshoff Bros as being the #1 spot in the country. Well, out of all the Fish & Chips we ate during those 3 weeks, I would have to say that the ones we ate at Beshoff Bros were the best!! Problem is that as of this writing, I don't know exactly which fish he ordered. It could have been the cod or the haddock or the hake. Whichever it was, it tasted great!! We enjoyed our meal sitting on benches across the road from the restaurant. They do not have indoor dining. You order at the counter. Wait about 20 minutes for your food. Then take your food away to eat somewhere. The meal we had at Beshoff Bros was the perfect ending to the wonderful day we enjoyed in Dublin, Ireland. Hope to return someday. The French fries were also amazing, so much so that they didn't need any sauce. I don't really understand the 4's and 5's this place is getting. Very very touristy. Over priced. Dry average fish in probably too much batter. Chips are grand but not the best I ever had. The greasy food tastes much better when you're smelling the salty air and watching the Ferris Wheel spin round and round. I experienced something similar when I went to Howth yesterday. It was a beautiful hot day and my friends and I were sitting on the beach when one of us decided that we needed fish and chips to complete our summer outing. We piled into two cars, waited 20 minutes in traffic and finally got to Beshoff Bros. It was worth the trouble: our haddock and chips costs only 7 Euro and the pieces of fish were flaky, warm and salty. The man who took our order wasn't very nice having barked at us to move aside and not obstruct the line to the till. Nonetheless, I forgave his impatience when I got my delightful white box of food. Unlike other places where fish and chips are served in a bag, this takeaway's packaging prevents your whole hand from getting greasy and wet. Everyone was sitting by the water eating this. The line is long but moves quickly. You order at the counter and have the choice of haddock, chicken, cod, or shrimp. We did a whole cod, which was a quality piece of cod - the texture of the fish itself was excellent, but the batter (and the chips) got soggy really quickly. They salt and vinegar it for you (with a white vinegar), but the fish and chips were still pretty bland. You get ketchup and tartar sauce on the side, which helps. They have soda and water available. Beshoff's has grown into a Dublin institution out of this one little store, but it's not easy to see why. Everyone told us we should try it, that it was authentic, and somehow more "real." But the most authentic thing we found there were the authentically stressed and fracturing employees. The guy in front of me was shouted down for requesting more ketchup, and they even made him produce the receipt to prove he had paid the extra 19 cents. With a line of 20 people out the door you might not have thought they had time to berate their customers, but somehow they found it. After having a look on Yelp I mentioned the good reviews Beshoffs had for fish and chips. We parked along the front of the shop and went in to order. It was €40 for our food and that was with no drink offered with the fish and chips.
