After hiking the cliff trail I descended into Howth and went into Beshoffs for a glass of wine and a sampling of local seafood. The staff treated me with a smile and I sat at the bar. They were quick to attend and happy to help. They even charged my phone while I enjoyed the restaurant. The bar server suggested the local salmon appetizer and I ordered a glass of French sauv blanc and seafood chowder. The salmon dish is several thick slices of smoked locally caught salmon almost sashimi style with a fantastic texture and impressive freshness and flavor. The chowder was amazing and light. The employees checked on me several times through and made me feel right at home. The bar staff even brought me my phone without asking at the end. I Loved it. Great experience. read more

Review is for the seafood bar area attached to the seafood market section (the restaurant seems to have a bigger menu but I did not check that out). Great selection of local Irish oysters, a perfect balance of flavor and butteriness. Also very nicely made razor clams, spot-on cooking, no excessive moisture but still packed a lot of briney flavor, bouncy texture, and complex mouthfeel from the spices and seasoning. In the picturesque town of Howth, there is a row of top notch restaurants to choose from. Outdoor seating or beautiful indoor dining is available at Beshoffs of Howth. The selection of fresh seafood on the menu makes it difficult to choose a single meal, especially on an empty stomach. We chose to sit outside and take in the views. The seafood chowder is one to rave about and it had clams! The flavor was terrific and it was chocked full of fish. I had to try my lunch mates authentic beer battered cod and fries! Some of the best we had on our trip! The seaweed butter with fresh bread was something that we tried for the first time. The fresh bread was delicious and the seaweed butter was worth trying, but it is an acquired taste. So happy we made the choice to check this restaurant out! I sat down at a unreserved table with my baby to have lunch it was 11:45am I saw that they started to serve lunch at 12. I was about to start feeding the baby and to get someone's attention to look at a menu when someone who may of been the manager told me that the only table not reserved was and that they were getting ready for lunch and I needed to be gone by 12, never even offered me a menu or ask did I want to order. I advised I was at a table that wasn't reversed and I don't see the issue and I asked was he refusing to serve me, he told me no but I had to leave in 15 mins. After a brief walk to check out the fish markets we came in here for a nice long lunch. The bread served before lunch was very nice and tied us over until the last member of our group arrived. We tried both types of fish and chips and all agreed that we preferred the cod over the halibut. And the seafood platter had all sorts of goodies from lobster to oysters and shrimp. As in the rest of the restaurants we enjoyed in Ireland, the service was wonderful. read more

When near the sea, eat from the sea. I decided while in Dublin to head to a fishing town and get some fresh seafood. I ended up at Beshoffs of Howth. The seafood is fresh! They ships come I and soon later it ends up on your plate. Not wanting to waste space on trivial things like vegetables, I ordered a grilled calamari with paprika and the fresh garlic crab. This was not a disappointing meal. The fish was fresh, and the flavours were there. They were also able to make this all gluten free for me as well. I chose to sit in the store portion instead of the full restaurant, but it was still a fantastic meal and a great view! 5 stars. read more

So for our first post-pandemic, sit-down outside lunch we fetched up at Beshoffs. More by accident than good planning but it wasn't at all bad. My cod and chips was ok. Cod, being cod, was a bit bland and I don't get the notion of mushy peas but the chunky chips were excellent. One of my companions had mussels in a ndjuja sauce. Tasty enough but the mussels were tiny, barely more than a large pea. The best dish was companion #2s crab burger. Well presented, plentiful and tasty. A couple of glasses of Pinot Grigio and we were done. In and out pretty sharpish as what we laughingly call summer around these parts can be quite nippy so it's a race between eating the meal before it gets cold or hypothermia setting in. There is nothing like sitting at a great place in Howth and enjoying the fresh seafood that is literally caught right outside the window. Colorful fishing boats are outside on the docks, views of the harbor and lighthouse are mesmerizing. Chowder and oysters were delicious and service was great. What better way to end a fresh walk over the cliffs of Howth with some piping hot seafood chowder. It's a fish mongers inside with Ivan's oyster bar at the back with Guinness on tap and wine. Beshoffs of Howth covers all the stops: it packs everything into one place. Primarily, the business is a fish market. The name Beshoffs is known in Dublin for selling battered cod and other popular fish like plaice, ray and haddock so when you come into this place, you see these cuts on display. But you can get a lot of other food too. This shop tries to capitalize on its prime location and good name by selling other things that Ireland is famous for. There's an oyster bar in the back of the shop called Ivan's. There's a vegetable and fruit section in the middle and there's a dairy fridge against the side wall. Finally, there's a coffee station that does takeaways. All the food looks really good and fresh, but the prices are exorbitant. I guess this place charges more for its upscale decor. read more

Food was ok, nothing special compared to the other amazing restaurants at which we ate during our 10 days in Ireland. The service from the kitchen lagged, that is, the kitchen messed up and somehow lost our order. We had just a couple of hours before we needed to be at the airport and, unfortunately, wasted much of that time sitting there waiting for our meal to be prepared. We were extremely hungry, it was past lunch hour, the restaurant was not busy -- yet we lost our chance to take in the one remaining hiking path that had been recommended to us just down the road.) Those seated at tables after us received their meals quickly, notwithstanding that we ordered similar dishes to what they were being served (pasta and fish and chips). When they finally realized what happened (after we inquired several times), the waiter humbly apologized, said the kitchen had lost our order but that management did not believe any adjustment to the bill should be made. We tipped the waiter (it wasn't hit fault), but won't be back to on our next visit to magical Ireland where, uniformly (except for Beshoff's) the service was amazing, the scenery breathtaking, and the Irish citizens (highly educated and cosmopolitan), absolutely wonderful. read more

Gorgeous little fishmonger set on the West Pier at Howth. Despite its slick interior and seeming unaffordability for the non home-owners or merc drivers out there, the fresh fish prices are actually pretty reasonable. There is also a coffee shop/snack food section and Ivan's Oyster Bar at the back of the fish market. Ivan's is a swanky looking bar and has an offer of 3 oyster shots and a glass of prosecco for $10. We were almost sucked in... sounded like a great idea, and the seating along the bar at the back is very cool! I'd probably shop here over Wrights next door (although much of a muchness, really!) because it has a nicer interior. read more

Stopped in here with my mom for some oysters and chowder. I had a glass of Sauvignon blanc and a half dozen fresh shucked oysters with a delicious mignonette. My mother had the fish chowder with brown bread and a half pint of Guinness. We were in heaven. Delicious briny oysters and the seafood chowder was the best we've ever had. Go here for fresh fish prepared with flavor! Full bar and barista too. I really enjoyed my tasty seafood chowder with fresh mussels and the brown bread was the best I've had so far. As if Howth doesn't have enough options, now you have another fantastic option while you're spending the day strolling along the lovely coast. Whether you're looking for a take away coffee and sweet, if you're interested in buying fresh seafood to cook up a nice meal at home or you want to sit in for a few seafood tapas along the counter while drinking a bottle of wine, you can do them all. The interior is bright and simple but perfectly suited to the nature of the business. Although I only stopped in for a latte and a slice of carrot cake to go, I will be back to try some of their delicious seafood tapas. read more

This restaurant holds the distinct position of being the second restaurant I've ever been to that has forgotten our order twice. It's exceptionally loud and not particularly comfortable inside. Staff aren't the best here either. Took 30 minutes for them to bring the drinks (we politely reminded them) and another 20 for two peoples' entrees. I got the calamari. It was essentially quality seafood covered in mush, with a nice sauce for 15 euro. Not worth it. The fish and chips (cod) were excellent with the exception of the tasteless undercooked serving of mashed peas it came with. Finally, the six oysters. This is the part of the order they forgot twice, made more aggravating by the simplicity of the platter. One member of our party waited over an hour for the six oysters. Now, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt here. I don't know if the oyster I tried was genuinely bad or if I just can't stomach oysters. Regardless, the person who waited liked them, so I suppose it was fine. In the end, the calamari was removed from our bill as an apology, but I would definitely not recommend this restaurant. read more

We took a train out to Howth from Dublin on the recommendation of a few people when asked where to get the best fish and seafood. After walking up and down the pier and reading all the menus, we went back to Beshoffs. We had been told they had the BEST fish and chips. My wife concurs! Since I am gluten free, I can no longer enjoy foods that are battered with wheat. I opted for a broiled local fish that was done to perfection. I was instantly drawn to this place because the special of the day combined two of my favorite foods, risotto and lobster! To be honest I didn't even look at the menu, my mind was made up and my friend had the same because what can compete with lobster risotto really? Visited Beshoffs with my parents and grandparents, and we had several different items. The scallops were served as a tapas in a shell, whilst the soups came in nicely sized bowls that you could pick up and "lick the bowl clean" easily. Food verdicts: Scallops - excellent, tender and full of flavour. As they're designed to be a tapas dish, there aren't many in the shell, but as a light lunch with some soda bread, they're perfect. Seafood chowder - large lumps of whitefish and salmon, complemented by diced carrots and celery (and probably some other vegetables). A very light broth, went down a treat. Shellfish bisque - my father tasted this and declared "I've won". Served with grated cheese, some toasted bread and crab and tomato pate. It smelt divine. Icecream - home made, shredded chocolate. Served in an absolutely massive dish with a small bowl in the middle, with three raspberries. Delicious. We got there for just after noon on a Sunday after visiting the Sunday Market (highly recommended), and had no issues getting a table. Come 12:45 or so, the building was packed with people having lunch, though part of this may have been due to the rain and hail that decided to visit Howth. read more

Only thing that I really don't like is the fact that cakes on the small counter are just there near the door where hundreds of people pass by, exposed to air, dust and germs! I hate to write a bad review for the kind of establishment meant for a fish lover like me but I had such a negative experience here on what was an otherwise beautiful bank holiday Monday in Howth. My friend and I climbed Howth head, walked the pier, and worked up an appetite on Monday afternoon. We considered fish and chips, gourmet sandwiches and all the other treats Howth has to offer before deciding to treat ourselves to something a little fresher at Beshoff's on the pier. This shop/restaurant/coffee shop has a huge range of gourmet produce and a mouth watering fish counter. In one corner you can purchase coffee, and at the back there's a seating area and service counter. This is where it starts to fall apart somewhat. There's no system for seating customers so it's every man for themselves (which in my opinion is never good). There's also no table service, and no indication of such except when you realise no one's coming and you ask the over-extended staff. Then you may be told to order at the counter, but not what part of the counter. For the record it's on the far left corner (a sign would be helpful here). When you discern the system for yourself, you may find yourself forming a queue behind someone more swiftly inspired than yourself. At this point you'll notice that you're in the way of staff accessing said counter - who doesn't like a bit of dancing while they wait to order their food? On Monday I was served by a quite disgruntled young man. I ordered two gambas pil pil from the tapas menu at a cost of 9.50 each. He asked if I wanted anything else, but thought at 9.50 I'm sure one portion each would be enough for lunch. Wrong. We were seated outside where we patiently waited for our food.... for 40 odd minutes. My friend had gone inside and saw what looked like may have been our food so hadn't asked. Soon after the same staff member who served me passed our table, grunted 'what did you order?' as he passed, then walked away without a word. Another ten minutes or so later our prawns arrived. All 7 of them. In a tiny bowl of oil. Now to be fair it looked like gambas pil pil you'd get in any other place selling tapas (minus bread). But for 9.50 I expected something more. I mean who the hell thought it was ok to sell prawns for 1.35 a pop? When I expressed my surprise to the waiter he gruffly responded, 'it's tapas', which has the effect of making you feel not only ripped off, but an idiot for even questioning the people ripping you off. I know what tapas is; it's cheap, small portions - Beshoff's seem to have forgotten the cheap part. My friend had an avocado with her which we added to our tiny bowls of the world's most expensive prawns. Now, orders get lost or forgotten, mistakes happen. It was busy. But when they do it's always a good idea to acknowledge the mistake, apologise, and since you're selling food and can assume your customers are hungry, a complimentary bowl of chips or bread would be a good gesture when you do fluff up. None of which were forthcoming in our case. To be fair to Beshoff's the dish (when it arrived) was delicious, the prawns are cooked in what tastes like brandy infused oil, garlic and chilli, so they've put their own stamp on the dish with the brandy. Some value added to the dish but seriously, unless the prawns are cooked in fairy tears and hand fed truffles all their lives I can't see the justification for the mark-up. Immediately upon leaving I walked around to daybreak picked up a packet of King cheese and onion and a one euro muffin, job done. Beshoff's, you've the makings of a lovely place that I'd otherwise be a loyal customer to. But I definitely won't be back for the rude service and the rip off prices. read more

Okay my food came and now im missing fork and knife. He asked me if i need one! I said no I dont have one. Never got so I had to get up and get it from another table. How nice is that??! Last Monday (31 October) I brought my family to Beshoff Market Tapas Grill in Howth, Co Dublin. There were five staff in this relatively small fish market and tapas bar. They all ignoreed the five of us. After 20 minutes we pointed out to a staff member t hat we were there to eat, not to smell the fish, and would like to order. After being ignored for another 10 minutes we just left. Even if they had taken an order at that point we had no confidence it would arrive in reasonable time. Later that day, I filled in a contact form on their website outlining the experience above and got a rapid auto-response promising "Many thanks for message which we have now received. After purchasing chips from their store, we decided to buy some fresh fish from the market store. My mother went in and I remained outside to rest, currently heavily pregnant. When my mother returned we stayed sitting outside because I was exhausted, but there were no other customers outside as it wasn't busy. A staff member soon emerged from within to tell us that we couldn't sit there. I told her that we'd bought fish already, but she didn't want any further chat and informed us that they weren't the same company as beshoffs chips (never mind the fish we'd bought inside) and said we couldn't stay and walked back in. The Beshoff Bros chipper in Howth is somewhere you must pop into when you're out for a day in Howth. A few of my friends and I hopped on the DART on the wrong side of the tracks one day and accidentally ended up going to Howth! We decided to make the most of it, so we did what all the tourists are supposed to do on a nice day at Howth pier; get a box of fish and chips from the chipper and sit by the pier. They make a lovely fresh cod and luscious chips to accompany. It's always packed with people but it's worth the wait! One word of advice; don't feed the seagulls! read more
