Compliments of the chef! Delicious fried soft calamari.

Ambience. A Service. A Food. A Price. A Found down the side of the middle pier of Howth seaside. Took the Dart train to end of ride Howth destination. Lots of parking but gets full on sunny weekends. Views sidewalk Al fresco looks into the drive and parking area...smelling the salty and fishy air from fish mongers along the pier. On a Friday, last place to find a seat as other restaurants turned me away around 9:00 pm. Server very friendly and just take any seat. Ordered me first Irish Guiness for 2025. Nice light and dark fresh Guiness with a proper head of foam. Ordered the seafood chowder with shrimp, haddock, scallops, mussels and clams with a beautiful light cream sauce. Accompanied by brown bread and Irish butter. Delicious!!! No wonder they've been here over decades.?!! My 4th time here over years. I'm a FaN!!!

The waitress was friendly, the seating wasn't bad, the taste of the food was ok, mediocre, definitely over priced. However, I suffered food poisoning symptoms after dining here. I had dinner on 5-5-2024, where we ate the lobster, shrimp and crab wontons (€13) and fish and chips (€20). After dining, the next morning I got food poisoning symptoms and 2 days later and I'm still suffering from the food poisoning symptoms. I do not recommend

Wow... took a taxi from Clontarff Castle for dinner and to experience Howth. Originally planned on splitting the fish and chips, but ultimately we each chose an entree. My husband and the fish pie, which arrived steamy, creamy and fishy in the best way. I ordered the butternut squash tortellini, which was homemade and possibly one of the best dishes I've had in my life, with flavorful oil, firm pasta and creamy sweet filling. Service was fast and friendly, and while the harbour was dark and drizzly, we enjoyed our venture out from Dublin. I have a thing for mushy peas, and those were also fantastic! Don't miss this gem!

After a long cliff walk, made only longer by a few missed turns, we were so ready for food when we made it back into town. Thankfully, we were able to snag one of the last outdoor seats at The Brass Monkey. The white sangria was fine - refreshing, but needed a bit more flavor. The food was great! I enjoyed the shellfish tasting platter, which came with a bit of everything. The prawn ravioli was by far my favorite - and had me wishing I had ordered that as an entree! My husband opted for pasta and added shrimp, and enjoyed it overall. Great spot for people watching and very personable servers!

Stopped in after walking the cliff trail. It was packed in the middle of the day, but I quickly got a table. The chowder came out hot and smooth. It was a large bowl. The seafood tasting player was great as well. The calamari and scallop were the best bites! While I didn't have dessert, others were and it looked great. Good service and a clean toilet as well.

Enjoyed the beet and goat cheese salad - waitress said it was a side salad - far from it - huge salad and very tasty- also enjoyed the pasta. Would definitely eat here again!

We had lunch here while visiting Howth. We sat outside and I had the seafood chowder. Great food and service.

    Seafood chowder and calamari

During a day trip to Howth, we stepped in for dinner before heading back into the city. We were there to hike Howth Head so I'll admit we were a little dressed down for dinner, but they still happily sat us. We shared a small calamari and the seafood chowder to start and while both were delicious, the chowder was out of this world! Maybe I'm used to thick, heavy American chowder, but this chowder was so light and fresh. I could've been perfectly happily with a big bowl of it, which I was shocked to see it didn't come in an entree size. Had it come in a larger size, I probably would've just ordered that for my main entree. But I'm kind of glad it didn't because I ordered the salmon that was the special of the week. It came with samphire, potatoes and a creamy chorizo sauce. Oh my gosh it was amazing! I had never had samphire before and let me tell you it's my new favorite veggie. I love capers and it reminded me of the freshness and snap of a string bean with the delicious brine of a caper. My boyfriend got the halibut that was the special of the week. To be honest with you, I can't remember what was on his halibut, I was too entranced by my own meal. I did try his and it was really good as well and he seemed happy. I can't praise Brass Monkey enough, from the service to the ambiance to the food. I'm only sad it's 4,000 miles away from me, lol Guess I'll have to figure out a way to recreate our meal here in the States until next time!

Since we were on this side of the town, we decided to make the most of it and look for a meal of seafood. I had Octopussy's Tapas bookmarked when researching for the trip, so we decided to stop in for lunch. It was a Thursday at around 1:30, and the restaurant was almost full. It's a very small restaurant and it's mostly high top tables with bar stools, so it wasn't exactly looking baby-friendly, since had our 8-month old and a stroller with us. Luckily, they have a small back room (literally a room that can probably seat 4-6 people) that was available, and they seat us back there. It was nice and cozy, and cute - decorated like you were on a ship. Here is what we ordered: -Carlingford Oysters (served in the shell with fresh lemon) - these oysters were everything! They were big, shucked properly, and tasted super fresh. It didn't need anything but the lemon but they did recommend us trying their housemade hot sauce. We did and we loved it, and ended up buying a bottle to take home. We also ended up ordering some more oysters for dessert (lol) -Seafood Chowder (squid, mussels, smoked coley, & prawns served with homemade brown bread) - this was full of seafood. It is heavy though since chowder is cream-based so I would recommend sharing this, as opposed to ordering one on your own. The brown bread was also very nice -Seafood Paella (paella rice, chorizo, mussels, gambas, squid rings, and smoked coley) - another dish filled with seafood. They don't skimp out here! I could have done without the squid rings (they tasted rubber-bandy, like they're from frozen), and the smoked coley. I'm not a huge fan of smoked foods. I didn't really taste it in the chowder - maybe the cream covered it up, but I was able to taste it more in the paella -Whiskey Scallops (cooked in whiskey butter) - very rich but the scallops were good. You definitely want to dip some of the brown bread in this sauce There were so many other dishes we wanted to try but we had to stop ourselves from ordering too much for two people. Overall, it was a great meal and at these prices for seafood?! You really can't beat it.

I can't pick a favorite (but the pork cheeks, and the chorizo are up there!), but every tapa was incredible and well executed. Take your time, be adventurous, and explore the menu. Portions are small enough that you can order many things to share. Paired the tapas with a wonderful Tempranillo, and a Cava Sangria. When we came they had a band already playing. It was honestly like an American jam sess where people can come up and sing and perhaps play if the request is honored. My husband asked the guitarist if he could join and the guitarist was gracious enough to loan him his guitar and pick as we are foreigners and didn't pack his guitar for our trip. He was able to play for about three songs and it was amazing to see the two cultures mix and mingle on stage. You could tell that the vibe changed throwing him in the mix. I would imagine this magical mix occurs each time they invite any unique talent that visits Le Basement. The drinks were inexpensive, the environment was welcoming, and the music was soulful.

Most evenings around the weekend there is a live Jazz act and, on the night I was there, we had a delightful lady singer with a fantastic voice and a great support band.
