When I think of beef stew, I think of my mom's homemade version. So one of the things I was most…read morelooking forward to in Ireland was trying authentic Irish stew. Our first meal in Dublin was at The Old Mill Restaurant, right in the heart of Temple Bar. It's been serving traditional Irish fare since the 1980s and has become a favorite stop for both locals and visitors looking for classic comfort food. After about a 20-minute wait, we were seated in the warm, inviting dining room. Susan ordered the mussels, one of her favorites, while I went with the Traditional Irish Stew and my daughter chose the Braised Beef & Guinness Stew. Both were exactly what we hoped for: hearty, flavorful, and perfect after a day of sightseeing. I finally understood why the Guinness stew had such a rich, dark color, and I have to admit, I came home a big fan of Irish stew. We finished with the Homemade Bread & Butter Pudding topped with fresh cream and custard, a comforting dessert that was the perfect ending to the meal. Service, atmosphere, value, and food were all five out of five. We also enjoyed chatting with the floor manager, whose pride in the restaurant and his team was obvious. That kind of hospitality made a great meal even more memorable.

We asked about the soup flavor & they offered a taste and brought out a huge sample boat. Super cool. I got the cottage pie lunch portion, which is more than I could barely eat. It came with a boat of the sauce /and gravy and meat. Wife got the fish and chips... The fillet was longer than the plate and it came with a mountain of fries, both delicious. Daughter got the creamy vegetable soup and chips. She loved it but couldn't even finish half. All the portions were very generous, nobody finished their meal, too bad we couldn't have taken it back to our hotel. Server was great & funny. Love this place.

Stopped in for lunch and we're seated promptly at a table for two. Need to mention that seating is…read moreeither high top or booth and stool seating. Stools are ok but not super comfortable. Menu has a good selection of Irish dishes from seafood chowder up to lamb stew and pies. We ordered the potato soup, seafood chowder, 'banjo' burger with onion rings. The soups arrived first and the seafood chowder was loaded with huge pieces of fish, potatoes (not many) with a creamy rich base. Flavor was incredible and in itself a full meal. Served in a large crock style bowl. The potato soup was minus any whole potatoes. It was a rich creamy base with plenty of flavor and very hearty. The burger was really a double cheeseburger with plenty of cheese, grilled onions, what appeared to be a mayonnaise based sauce on a soft hamburger roll. Really tall enough that it was tough getting your mouth around it. Very well seasoned burgers and the onions were a nice touch. The onion rings were huge and had a very light batter on them. They served in a metal bowl to keep them hot. For dessert the apple crumble was ordered which was served in a large dish with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This could have been warmer but still was good.. The 5 star rating is for the chowder as it outshone the rest of the meal although the burger was definitely a close second. Definitely will return to try other dishes when we come back to the city.

The meat and veggies were plentiful, the portion generous, and it was tasty enough but maybe on the bland side? It was served with a side of braised red cabbage which we really liked: sweet but not sour like pickled cabbage. And house-made brown stout bread, also very good. The wife had a Guinness and I, thinking it too cliché to order Guinness as a tourist in Ireland, tried a different stout whose name I've forgotten from the ample selection. But comparing the two, so much better! The menu offers a wide variety of traditional Irish dishes, more than most of the similar pubs in the area. As well as the other expected pub type food: sandwiches, burgers, etc. As for desserts, if we were hungrier, the wife might have ordered the Irish Whiskey Bread & Butter Pudding. The hubby would probably get his dessert later, as the selection was limited and neither that nor the Apple Crumble appealed. Sitting at the bar we had a more personalized experience than were we at a table. The bartender offered to take a photo of me behind the bar which I of course accepted. We made the right choice in coming here.

Fantastic- exactly what one hopes for when they step into an Irish pub!…read more We enjoyed it here so much we ate here two times during our stay in Dublin. Sandra our waitress was so friendly and attentive. When we came back the 2nd time she remembered us and the drinks we had ordered previously! A Guinness and Smithwicks Red Ale. Honestly she made us feel so welcome and comfortable, like we were in our local home pub. (THANK YOU SANDRA). The first visit I had the cottage pie and the 2nd visit the fish & chips. All the food was spot on, the cottage pie was like a warm hug - the meat is all grinned so it goes down smooth. The fish & chips was BEST ever - crispy, large and perfectly fried. For an elevated taste, I recommend using the vinegar. My travel partner had the Irish Stew first visit and Guinness stew second. I tasted both and they were delicious. We also tried a Harp beer - it's lighter like a Stella - so fresh, in my pics you can see the incredible head that formed on top. Dessert we ordered on the 2nd night - Banoffi pie - something different and good to try. (I posted pics of all the food and drinks mentioned) The music on both nights was a solo guitar player - on Sunday night the guy was so good, he seriously should be on The Voice or one of the Got Talent shows - he sung all types of songs and accepted requests. The guitarist the 2nd night was good too. They have adequate seating, with additional seating upstairs. If you're in Dublin and looking for that quintessential Irish pub experience, pass all the other pubs and go directly here - Lovely atmosphere, so cozy, warm and welcoming- even with a whole city to try out, we chose here twice!! I wanna go back tonight- unfortunately I'm 10hrs by plane - next time, but for now I'll just have revisit in my memories, with the aid of my pics and videos....
