    Nasi Goreng

Perfectly fine. My wife and I were intrigued by the Dutch-Indonesian combo of Borrel's offering so decided to stop by for a late lunch. And while there wasn't anything bad, there also wasn't anything memorable. We got: - Bitterballen: It's a traditional Dutch bar snack which is kinda like deep fried meatballs if the inside was really creamy beef. Interesting, though don't quite get all the raving reviews about it. I guess I can see how it would have tasted a lot better with a drink, since all that deep fried-ness definitely will help soak up the alcohol. - Frikandel with upgraded War Fries: Deep-fried sausage which was tasty though not anything different and size was small for the price. The "war fries" were basically fries (which were done really well as they almost tasted slightly sweet and the potato-ness really came through) with a side sauce combination of mayo, peanut satay and onions (interesting combo, though the mayo overpowered the other two). - Chicken Satay: The skewers were a good size. A bit overcooked though the tasty peanut sauce saved it. - Nasi Goreng: The rice was cooked well (not overly hard or soft, stuck nicely together, very flavourful), the rest of the dish was nondescript. - Pannenkoeken: Their famous 'thinner than a pancake thicker than a crepe' offering, you can get this sweet or savoury. We chose sweet, and got ours with apples, cinnamon and powdered sugar. It had a good size, though kinda tasted just like a crepe with less filling to me. Service was friendly and efficient. Apparently, Borrel has a seasonal menu (they'll have these rich stews come winter), and used to have a more extensive offering pre-covid. Maybe we'll give it another try months from now, in the hopes that something fine turns into something awesome.

I really enjoyed my experience here. It's seems like the kind of restaurant where the waiters know your name. My waitress was super friendly and knowledgeable about what accommodations could be made for me as a vegan. They have a selection of beers on tap and a varied menu. I definitely want to go back to try some other dishes.

Poffertjes - my favourite Dutch dessert

I have had an amazing love affair with Dutch food for many years now. I have even made two trips to The Netherlands because of this. So when I found out the Borrel had a physical location I had to go and see it for my self. I have been a big fan of Borrel, following them on social media to see where they would go next. Now that they have their own physical location I of course went. This location small but cozy, the service is very friendly, and what brings me back every time is the pofferjes! I don't know what it is about these dessert but is has a spell on me. This is my first visit here, I am happy and satisfied with the food and service. I will be back in the near future and hopefully many, many more times.

I have been looking for good Dutch food (reminisced of Amsterdam) since I got back and this place delivered. First off, the cider was great. Not Dutch or anything, just a solid cider. I was happy with it. The bitterballen brought me RIGHT back. There is NO where to get this delicious little ball of fried gravy, and I devoured them. They were perfect. Dutch fries, while not as good as Belgian fries, are amazing, and the ones here delivered. Eat them with mayo or curry ketchup. Just do it. 10/10 recommend.

    Herring!

I was so excited when I found out thus restaurant was opening. Ever since going to Amsterdam a few years ago, I've been missing the Dutch raw herring that was so widely available. I have not been able to find a suitable alternative in Toronto until this restaurant came along!! Borrell is a small restaurant on the Danforth and was packed when we went on a Saturday evening. Service was prompt, herring was awesome, beer selection was good! Only downside (or upside, however you look at it) is they only prepare about 10 orders off herring a day. The fish must be fresh so they are not able to prepare too many of it! They don't have a big menu, but food was pretty good! To end, good service, great food!

Many others in reviews of this place have complained about the poor table service and I urge you to take them seriously. It is REALLY BAD. Food wasn't much better. - Greeted at the door by waiter whose entire vibe seemed to be, "what are you doing here?" No warmth, no welcome, no charm, no good cheer; deeply disinterested. - No offer of drinks. None. Not alcohol or anything else. When we asked, the waiter was surprised that someone would want to order drinks. My simple soda did not arrive until the middle of the meal after I asked again. - Proper cutlery was never delivered for eating pasta. - Desert would have been nice if we hadn't already spent a ton of time waiting around intending to spend more money. We went elsewhere. As to the food... I ordered the Italian Classic Spaghetti à la Carabonara. The world is filled with terrible carabonaras but this set a new low. It was like ramen. I coated noodles sat in a bowl of thin yellow/brown fluid that tasted only of mushrooms, presumably from the guanciale. Parmasean would have been helped but if you don't care, you offer only Romano as was delivered here yesterday. So think of it as Pork Noodle Soup. Speaking of soup, I was interested in ordering some but the waiter couldn't describe it except to list every ingredient imaginable for soup. I took a pass on this notorious staple of fake restaurants, "the leftover everything soup". To be fair, my friend had the daily special, crab cakes. He found them light and tasty as opposed to thick and heavy. I am always disturbed whenever I see the presumed chef sitting in the dining room, this one did not have air conditioning on a beautiful June day, staring at the customers, offering no greeting or engagement. I had hoped this might become a regular neighbourhood spot for me. Nope, never. I'd rather travel to a different neighbourhood than come here again.

Menu and dishes can be found in my pictures. Overall I think this is an ok 1 star perhaps Michelin recommended restaurant. While the dishes were plated beautifully and the concepts were solid. The taste profile was not as elaborate and multi-layered as what it was before. What was once a restaurant where I wondered why it didn't attain 2 stars, I would say that I wouldn't be surprised if the offering now received a Michelin recommended status. Portion sizes were good especially the tajima wagyu. It's been a 11 hours since I ate and I'm still full. Although I did add the lobster dish which was nice but same aforementioned limitations on complexity of flavour. Don't get me wrong, this is still a solid fine dining restaurant. However, I considered this the best restaurant in Canada before. I don't think of it that way anymore. Gold toilets are cool though.

After speaking with others, this appears to be a recurring issue. The gap between their polished Michelin‑star public image and how they treat vendors behind the scenes is staggering. Based on my experience, the reputation they promote does not match the reality. I will not work with them again, and I will not support a business that treats vendors this way.

It's nestled amongst all the other restaurants on the Danforth and occupies the space of the old Myth Restaurant. You can't miss it since it's facade of a Roamn building is 3 stories. I appreciate the work that went into the exterior but Julius Ceasar would be disgusted with what they serve inside. We decided to give it a try since we have only seen a maximum of 6 people in on the patio at any one time. We spoke to the hostess.....she showed us the menu ...and voila we were seated at the in the front patio. Did I mention every other patio was completely full adn we were the only people here. First red flag !!!! Second Red flag!!!! 10 to 15 minutes to get 4 drinks....easy drinks...one beer, one coke, one ice tea and one San Beneditto water (sparkiling water). We ordered our food from the photocopied menus....my menu was wrinkled so I got a fresh sheet.. Third Red Flag: we ordered 1 lb of chicken wings ......45 minutes for them to come...did we mention that we were stioll the only people in the restaurant. The wings were disgusting.....I had visions of Chef Ramsay going through the kitchen and pulling out old chicken and saying...How can you @#&^%$ serve that?" My girlfriend ordered the Pirri Pirri chicken,,,she's Portuguese,,,,we have eaten it numerous times at real Portuguese resturants. One again disgusting. We left it. Another person in our party ordered a New York steak well done...a real chef would never burn the steak to a charcoal crisp to get it well done.

The cocktail program here is exceptional; my drink was perfectly balanced and inventive. For starters, the oyster of the day/week was incredibly fresh, followed by one of the most amazing steaks I've had recently. While the food was certainly delicious and refined, it was the hospitality that elevated the entire evening to another level. Every single person who served us was not just professional, but genuinely warm, making us feel like long-time regulars. This kind of attentive, yet professional, service is truly next-level. If you are looking to impress a client or colleague and ensure a productive, refined meeting, this is the venue. Highly, highly recommended.

I didn't even have to ask for tabasco as the waiter asked me for it first Seared foie gras and maple apples with current puree: This was divine! The seared part had a slight crunch but the inside was smooth, rich and buttery. The apple added sweetness and texture as well. Beef tartare with foie gras: This was the first time having tartare with foie gras pate and I wish it was done more. It adds an extra layer of richness that was a good complement Rack of lamb: The lamb was perfectly medium rare, and I loved the accompaniments. I always saw fiddleheads at the grocer but never was brave enough to make it. I love the crunch and texture and light flavor Iberico pork chop: This was pretty good, the pork was tender but I couldn't really taste the iberico in it (perhaps i'm used to the nutty taste), the creamed spinach accompaniment was pretty good too Nutella beignets with cinnamon ice cream: This was so good! The beignets were filled with nutella and the cinnamon ice cream was a great complement Honey creme brulee with lemon curd and cream cheese: This was like a big slice of creme brulee lol, much bigger portion than many I've had. I couldn't really taste the lemon though The wine list consisted of an entire textbook categorized by region. It was super in depth and the Chianti we got was delicious and reasonably priced. I can't say the same for some other vintages that I saw for like 60k though definitely recommend for an intimate date night!

We went for a 5pm reservation and it filled up rather quickly. The host and all the servers were really wonderful and attentive. For a group of 3 they recommended 4 small plates and 2 large ones all to share. Something nice is that they have complimentary sparkling water which I enjoyed. We ordered the challah - both the butter and pâté versions - the BBQ salami, crispy potatoes, the turnips, the endive salad, and the chicken schnitzel. They brought out the bread and salami first as well as complimentary house-made coleslaw which was crispy, light, and added a perfect vinegary bite. The challah was warm and airy. I didn't try the butter but I thought the pâté was very nice and smooth. The BBQ salami was incredible!! The mustard was a nice compliment with the apricot flavour as well. The turnips, salad, and potatoes came next, followed quickly by the chicken. I loved everything. The pear in the salad was an unexpected highlight. The chicken was the standout for sure. I absolutely loved it. For dessert we tried the cheesecake which was nice, a good balance of tang and mild sweetness. The bathrooms are also nice with the little WC signs, the good paper towel, and the recipes in addition to other art prints on the walls. I don't normally comment on the washrooms, but these were cute. Overall, everything we ate was wonderful and the service was great! It came out to about $170 for us but we ordered the perfect amount.
