Le Sélect Bistro has the kind of atmosphere that immediately slows you down in the best way. From the white tablecloths to the warm lighting and classic bistro setting, everything about the space felt timeless and quietly elegant without trying too hard. It's the kind of place that makes you want to settle in, order slowly, and really enjoy the evening. We started with a few appetizers, and the beef tartare was one of my favorite dishes of the night.. beautifully balanced, well seasoned, and rich without feeling too heavy. The foie gras was also very nicely done, smooth and delicate, especially with the toasted bread and the sweetness from the preserve on the side. The risotto was creamy and comforting, with a deep savory flavor that felt very French in the most satisfying way. For the main, the duck dish was especially memorable.. rich, hearty, and full of depth, with the beans and sauce bringing everything together in a way that felt rustic but still refined. We stumbled into this place because the two other places we wanted to hit up were packed. We looked across the street, did a quick Google look at reviews and my wife said without hesitation, "let's go for it!" OMG...... was I ever glad we did. We got there a little before noon but the place was pretty slow. When we asked for a table for 2, the guy said they only had room at the bar, which we took. It turned out to be the best seat in the place. Very quaint French bistro that reminded us of Metropolitan in Ottawa. The service was excellent and we ordered Caesar's on the off chance they'd be as good as the ones we had the day before....... They were. Absolutely perfect. I make Caesars all the time but I can't make them this good. Easily tied with the ones we had the previous day. Then the food came and by this time the place was packed....but the food was absolutely epic. My wife had the quiche florentine and I had the eggs Benny with a side of breakfast sausage. My meal was off the charts good but the sausages they gave me were artisanal or homemade- just amazing. My wife loved her quiche too. Valeriia, I want to thank you for a perfect evening on May 2nd. You made it easy for me pre-event, in terms of your help with planning. You answered my questions as we went along and provided good advice. The event itself was a huge success. The staff were excellent in terms of knowing when to bring out food, when to pass it and when to place it on the buffet table. Staff kept the gluten free food separate which made it easy for guests to find it - you even placed the gluten free cards I had brought. Beverage service was professional and the wines Valeriia selected were enjoyed by all. I had one guest with some very specific dietary requirements and Chef made a small plate for her which was ready when she arrived which was very much appreciated. The guests commented on the quality of the food and staff. Several people said that they would now come back to Le Select for dinners. I would strongly recommend Le Select for events. read more

We came here for their prix-fixe winterlicious menu and were really happy with the vibes and elegance of the restaurant. The staff are attentive and friendly. You can choose to sit at the bar or in the lounge; they also have a front patio and a backyard patio in summertime. We ordered "Escargots bourguignons" for appetizer. Escargots were out of shell and were served in a puff pastry l, which was delicious. But, I would prefer escargots in shell. For entrée, we ordered "Braised Lamb Shoulder" and "Steak Frites"(medium). Braised Lamb shoulder was delicious and we liked its combination with polenta. Steak was a bit too dry on the outside, but medium on the inside. So, not our favorite dish of the night. For dessert we ordered "Mousse au Chocolat au Grand Marnier" and "Tarte au Citron". Both were delicious, but Tarte au Citron was definitely our favorite. read more

Came here for a girls get together. Service were great and staffs were friendly. We got the more popular food and it wasn't as good as we thought. The beef tartare was the best of the dishes we had. The French onion was decent and the scallop dish was good too. The duck confit was a disappointment. The duck was dried and salty with way too much white beans. I came here for a work event. The place is very clean, spacious and well kept. The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable about everything they have to offer. The food is traditional French which isn't something I enjoy. Nothing on the menu really appealed to me but I decided to get the risotto. It was delicious and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It was piping hot and full of flavour. We also ordered several of their desserts which we all shared. I'd come back for the dessert alone. Stopped in on a whim with my daughter who wanted French onion soup. Her soup was good. I ordered the risotto which was described on the menu as "risotto de saison: carnarolli rice, butter, white wine, shallots, grana padano." Instead, it came with pumpkin seeds, raisins, chestnuts, brown sugar, some type of crispy thing on top and squash. I should have returned it when it was served but didn't think to. The waiter explained that it's "de saison" and that the chef changes the recipe each season. I speak French but didn't catch that on the menu plus the wrong description is there. I was looking forward to a savoury taste with white wine and shallots, as per the menu. Hundreds and hundreds of calories added on to the dish without my consent basically. It would have already been heavy with the cheese and butter. Sucked up being served Diet Pepsi rather than the Diet Coke I asked for. It was from a fountain and it was very flat. Wouldn't go back here actually, even though the ambiance was nice. Also: we were seated practically on top of a couple out for a date and there were about 10 empty tables around us. They seemed annoyed and I was also. Again, usually I speak up when something's not right but tonight I was distracted. Finally: the prices are completely inflated. My daughter's soup was $21 and like someone else mentioned: the Costco one is pretty good. My risotto (which was NOT even what I ordered ) was $27. Please. There's nothing in it (like no meat, no fancy truffles).... Just gross raisins and pumpkin seeds on top . The bill with tip was about $97. That was for one soup, one rice dish, a flat Diet Pepsi and my daughter ordered an $18 drink. Would have stopped her had I realized the price. Again, if you're going to change a menu item: have the foresight and organization skills to tell the customer in advance so that they can make an informed decision. read more

I chose this spot after reading an Eater 2023 review listing it in the top restaurants of Toronto. Accept this review at your own risk-or maybe at your peril. It not only totally underwhelmed, but forced me to reassess how high I hold the bar on dining out. With many diners there seemingly enjoying the food and content with the lacksadaisical service, I seriously could not get why this place got such a great review. Maybe it has just fallen on hard times-the waitress did admit that the kitchen was slow and they had a new chef... On entering, the restaurant is lively enough, the vibe is good, the host/waitress friendly and enthusiastic. We were seated quickly and before long our server came and we placed our order. We started with the Caramelized Onion and Goat Cheese Tarte and Foie Gras Terrine with toast points. The Goat Cheese Tartine-if they make their own puff pastry, it was overworked, tough and cracker like. Not delicate, fluffy and rich and soft. The presentation was good, but I wasn't even sure if there was any chevre in there-more like small flecks of brie, and the quantity was entirely wanting. The frisee and fresh figs on top were fresh, but the caramelized onions and fig jam left much to be desired. Moving on to the Foie Gras Terrine-maybe the gelee on top made from sauternes wine was the best part. It was a very thin, well presented sliver of terrine. Flavor itself was overly bland, very little sense that I was eating anything as rich and delicious as foie gras. If they wanted to be subtle about it, they win on that front. Two of us ordered burgers, and I had the Salade Nicoise. Service took over 30 minutes to bring out the main courses, and everything seemed like it had been sitting out for hours. Or, in the case of my salad, everything had been prepared long beforehand and sat in the fridge. Cold soft boiled egg? What? Cold runny yolk-not good. Seared tuna cold through and through? It was probably seared at 9 this morning, sliced and stuck in the fridge, then plated up 4 hours later. A few sliced black olives? Where are the Nicoise olives? Tomatoes in the middle of winter-ok, so you can get greenhouse grown tomatoes, but these looked too terrible to try. Ok, so maybe it was prepared the same day, but this is not real, well-prepared food. The food showed an utter lack of proper, timely preparation and care. For a medium and a rare burger, both were the same hockey puck of overcooked, cool meat. For dessert we had a Lemon Tarte. This was the best, and only decent, part of the meal. Not quite lemony enough for me, but with a well made thin crust. But I do think it had been refrigerated a while too-crust was getting soggy. Nonetheless, well presented. Shame on you Le Select Bistro-you will have to work very hard to move back up into the good graces of Eater reviews-and mine. read more

After a long day at Niagara Falls, we were ready for a nice dinner. Le Sèlect was on the hotel list, had good reviews, and had a thumbs up from a few people we spoke to. In addition, it was a short walk from our hotel, just West of the Entertainment District. We started off w/ the escargots in puff pastry. This dish tasted good, but there were too many mushrooms for my taste. It was hard to taste the star of the dish. On the other hand, my main was fantastic. I haven't had confit for a while, so when I was researching the menu, I had my mind set. The duck was so crispy, moist and flavorful. Secondarily, the beans & ham underneath were very hearty. I'm glad I didn't opt for two pieces of duck. I saved room for dessert, and the pear tartine w/ ice cream & caramel was perfect for a warm summer night. It was light, and I love anything w/ a caramel sauce. To accompany dessert, I had a nice Canadian whisky. Regarding the ambiance, its big inside & out. There is a large bar to your right as you walk in. We opted for the large patio bc it was still warm after 8 pm. The only downside was the restroom was a long walk thru the inside, and down a long flight of stairs. Our waitress Becca was excellent. She was friendly, informative on the menu, and attentive. A taste of France just across the street from The Well! The scallop appetizer was the star of the show tonight, with the butter sauce and the perfectly cooked scallops. Another restaurant checked off my list thanks to @liciousto! I thought we got an ok deal for $65 pp for the tartare, escargots, steak frites, and desserts. This restaurant has been around Toronto for 50 years and you really feel like you are stepping into the Ratatouille resto with the rustic parisian inspired decor with spectacular service ‍ to be candid, I thought our apps and mains were tasty but didn't meet my expectations. the steak quality was good and and tender, but not something i'd come back for anytime soon. The staff were friendly upon walking in and the place is pretty big with plenty of tables. For drinks we ordered a sidecar and it happened one night. The sidecar was very sweet and not as boozy as it's supposed to be but still tasted good. For food we got the escargot, French onion soup, and steak frites. The escargot was pretty terrible. The pieces of escargot were very small and mushy, the parsley butter tastes more like oil and there was more puff pastry than anything else. They also brought out our steak before the French onion soup, which we were ok with, but the steak was mediocre. It lacked enough butter and wasn't the most tender. The French onion soup was probably one of the best dishes we had along with the dessert. The tarte tartin was large and could easily serve 4 but we also finished it between the 2 of us. It comes with caramel sauce and 2 scoops of ice cream. It was extremely filling but worth it. If I did ever come back, it would be to try the steak tartare with some wine. I've been to this resto in a number of incarnations. It was originally on Queen West, then Wellington, then closed and now back on Wellington in its same location. Happy to say that the food is still great. Lovely same decor, French Bistro, with a lot of booths. In summer they have a huge front patio. One thing to note. This block of Wellington from Spadina to Portland is a disaster presently with construction. We made the mistake of driving and getting there and finding a place to park us nightmarish. You can't even park on one side of the street. So take transit or check out if there is parking available elsewhere. Ok. Now to the food. We did go for lunch not dinner. Hubby had escargot. Then Mussels and Frites. I had the Croque Madame. Pics included. Our friends had the Creme Brûlée at the end and the Salmon Brioche and Frisée salad for mains. FYI this is not a place for a rushed meal. Food was timely but well spaced. Good selections of wine even by the glass. Do give them a try! Recommend reservations though. A new favorite for an upscale brunch. Very creative brunch menu with a French flare. I had and would highly recommend the tarte du petit déjeuner a puff pastry covered by mushrooms caramelized onions, brie and a fried egg. Wife had the croque madame which really should be on the brunch menu. French toast with ham, gruyère, bechamel, sunny side egg, & frites. Both meals were exceptional and matched the perky service. We were for brunch. Made the reservation and they gave us a table by the window we started with escargot, the texture was just prefect. And the puff mins was prefect soaking up the garlic oil. We ordered the Paris tart and steak breakfast. The brunch pie with salad on a nice fluffy puff pastry. You will love it if you love puff pastry. I found its a bit hard on the bottom, I had some difficulty cutting it with my steak knife. The steak was done as we ordered medium. They suggested specials which was beef cheeks and the ones who ordered it said it was amazing. Only complaint was it was hard to find parking due to construction but it wasn't their fault. You could do a lot better for brunch. While the space is very nicely designed, like a French brasserie, I just find the ambiance here cold and soulless. If you do go, I recommend the front room over the back room. Our brunch was also well below par. I asked for bacon extra crispy and it came limp and chewy as can be. Didn't enjoy anything about this place except for the service -- our server was quite friendly. read more

I took a client here recently and we had a lovely meal. The service was very friendly and I loved the vibe/ambiance. We started with the escargot, which were super yummy. I also had a delicious mocktail (they had a couple options for the sober sallies like me). For dinner, I ordered the steak frites - the fries were UNBEATABLE, SO GOOD, but the steak was a little tough. I've had better steak. But again, those fries were perfectly cooked and perfectly salted. My dining companion had the duck confit and seemed to really like it, so I'd probably try that next time! read more

Been around for 50 years and is one of my favourite restaurants in Toronto! Service and food are impeccable! I've been here twice and tried: - croque madame ($26): YOU NEED TO TRY THIS. If you've ever asked yourself "how good can a sandwich be?" this is one of the most elevated versions of a sandwich you can try. Gruyère cheese, bechamel sauce, and topped with a sunny side egg. Super rich, buttery, and impressive. I'm not sure how they make it but I wish I did so I could re-create it! I get this every time I come here, and it's honestly one of those dishes I think about a lot Coquilles st-jacques ($24): seared scallop and potato gratin. Another one of my fave dishes here. So rich in flavour and scallops are cooked to perfection. Potato gratin has such a lovely whipped texture. escargots bourguignons ($23): used to be served in the shells, now served on a puff pastry. The pastry was super flakey and THE LAYERS!!! The escargot was chopped up which kind of takes away from the usual texture, it kind of feels like chopped mushroom. tarte aux oignons et chèvre ($19): a flatter tart than the previous, has goat cheese, caramelized onions, figs which all complimented each other moules frites ($26): super generous portion of mussels and fries. Marinated in a white wine, butter and garlic sauce salade niçoise ($33) great to pair with the other dishes and mains petite seafood platter tarte tatin ($22): huge portion. Great for sharing! Comes with icecream. Everything here is quite buttery and rich so eat in moderation :) Prices are very reasonable and affordable.
