Lovely rooftop bar with cozy outdoor seating area and some intriguing indoor spaces as well. The view isn't as expansive as, say, 230 5th or Ink 48, but it makes up for it with interesting decor (think vine-covered stone walls), as well as a more intimate seating arrangement. There's a beautiful solarium-type area on your way to the outdoor section which seems like a fantastic alternative if the rooftop is too crowded. The drinks were solid if not 100% memorable, but this bar definitely has the single best-named cocktail in the city - Tequila Mockingbird. Tequila Mockingbird!!! HA. Give the man/woman who named that a medal and a lifetime supply of tequila. And mockingbirds, why not. Overall, I had a great evening here. It's a fantastic date spot if you're looking for a rooftop bar that's light on doucheyness and heavy on character and elegance. read more

Perhaps one of my favorite places to imbibe...especially when the temps finally crawl north of 50 degrees. Great outside space and if you're lucky enough to grab a table, it's the perfect place to slow down and sip on cocktails that, truth be told, rival pdt, death and co and like, if albeit on a greatly shortened list. The Pulitzer is a phenom gin mix and the perfectly balanced sweet and sour tequila sip is divine. They also have champagne cocktails that are so refreshing you almost forget the $15 price tag. These surpass your everyday bellinis and mimosas and include the freshest of ingredients like ginger, cranberries, even figs. The interior is delightful as well, with an uncramped comfortable feel, a fireplace (um LOVE) and another pseudo outdoor space that is completely covered and kept to the same nice warm forget-its-20 degrees-outside temps. Gets increasingly busy as more and more of the after work clamor for a drink...but it's worth the elbowing :-) read more

Note: the entrance to this bar is on 41st St next to the restaurant called Madison & Vines. I had a hard time finding it.....in the rain....and without an umbrella, so you are welcome in advance! Nice bar in a good meet-able location if you're meeting friends who are coming from all different locations since it's near both Grand Central and Bryant Park Stations (for the orange line!) The place looks like a beautiful garden-room except you're not on the ground floor; you're, er, higher. Not a huge bar so I'm glad my friend made us a reservation since we were a large group. Quality of drinks and service are standard (decent to good but nothing to write home about). Prices are more on the expensive side - you'll pay $8.50 for a beer and $13 for a glass of wine. Our firm will NOT be hosting events here again. The amount of rigmarole and communications required to host an event here, only to have it cancelled unexpectedly despite all our guests showing up in the crowded lobby left a very sour taste on our mouths. About a week ago I had called and left a voicemail with the reservations desk to book an event. They did not reply, so I called several days later and spoke with Melissa Gelia to book the event. On our call I was made aware of the cancellation policies ($25/per guest if we do not arrive), reserve with a credit card etc. On the day of the event, I received an email several hours before to confirm our table. I confirmed via email however I missed a call in the afternoon from them. Apparently missing this call led them to completely cancel our reservation with no further communication on their end. To top this off, when our guests arrived, the staff were rude and not understanding about the entire issue, simply stating 'you did not confirm, we gave away your reservation'. They also did not believe I had received an email, which then showed them on my phone, but it wouldn't have made a difference as there was no space. I have been very disheartened by the entire process and the waste of time spent organizing an event that had to be relocated. Shout out to Park Ave Tavern who were able to accommodate us VERY last minute and were friendly!! Highly recommend. read more

This place is cute. You take the elevator inside the hotel to the top floor. Came here on a saturday night. there's a indoor bar which was completely empty. The rooftop bar was small. But cute with nice little chairs, benches to sit on. The view was not as great as the rooftop view on 230 fifth, but it was very nice to just sit outside on a summer night. The cocktails here range from $12 to 14 dollars, and it was yummy. The waitress was nice and friendly I would come back here again. read more

Bookmarks is on the "14th floor" (lucky 13!) of the Library Hotel and has access to a small rooftop-area decorated with plantings and benches. If you like to talk over drinks, come here; the settings are all arranged nicely for casual conversation between a group of friends, or a more intimate date atmosphere. Definitely go during decent weather so you can take advantage of the outdoor area, but since there's a big atrium, it might be pretty kickass during a bad storm as well. Book/ library themed rooftop at the Boutique Library Hotel is an amazing, cozy quiet and quaint gem close to Grand Central; nestled / hidden quietly away from all the midtown busi-ness. Great for conversation with friends or a date. Wonderful themed drink list but I opted for their wonderfully made martini. Servers were friendly, attentive, professional and sophisticated in appearance and service. Definitely recommend this as a spot for a date or to meet friends where you can easily have conversation. In a city obsessed with rooftop bars, bookmarks has the potential of being one of my favorites - granted, I really haven't been to all that many yet- but thats partly because I have been returning to bookmarks. Located in midtown, bookmarks is on the top level of the library hotel, small, boutique-y and really unmarked. The atmosphere is relaxed, and *gasp* unpretentious, which, really, is what makes this place a gem. It's great to be able to just enjoy a drink and the view without having to be on some sort of list. The waitresses are friendly, and the drinks are yummy and have clever book related names. The only downside to this is having to navigate the stairs to use their bathroom. not the most convenient, especially after a few cocktails. read more

I can't speak highly enough of Bookmarks! Had a birthday party here a couple of Saturdays ago and it was perfect. Had a room all to ourselves - it was a little chilly so we didn't really use the terrace - but the space was more than enough. The staff and bartenders are probably some of the best I've experienced in the city - making sure everything with the party was okay and just all around great. The space itself is well set up, classy and not at all like some other more noisy, pretentious rooftops in the city. Oh, and the drinks are unreal! Limited menu, but the food we ordered was good, everything from the flatbread to the sliders. The fruity cocktails don't have a lot of alcohol, so if you want to get your money's worth, get a glass of wine or beer. Besides the library decor, the space wasn't as exciting as I had hoped. The rooftop isn't really outdoors, it's covered by a glass roof. Very small, tight space and you have to go downstairs for a bathroom. Service was ok. read more

Bookmarks is a great date spot with excellent indoor and outdoor spaces and literary-themed drinks (my favorite!) The Pulitzer, Tequila Mockingbird...very cute. The bar is located on the top floor of the Library Hotel (entrance on 41st street next to Madison & Vine). The space is executed well with a nice view of midtown and a decent amount of seating for a rooftop bar. I didn't have trouble getting a table for two with a date for after work drinks. The cocktails are a bit pricey at $15 but that's fairly standard for a rooftop location. I would recommend for an upscale evening drink. read more

It's a small rooftop bar in midtown. Very quiet and has a very relaxing feel. It has the same look and feel of the Library bar at the Hudson but much cozier. Finding the entrance is not so easy, since the hotel has a tiny not much promoted door and signage, but you will soon discovered your search was for the best! When you step out the elevator you will jump in an Art Deco bar with two rooms and a balconies overlooking Madison Ave and the Public Library. The room on your left is cozier, with winter garden sofas. The room of your left is smaller, but charming with nice duo sofas. I have been here once in the summer, it's a wonderful intimate option for dates or small group of friends. Cocktails are original and tasty, not too alcoholic, and bit excel expensive.. $14-16. This is definitely one of the more quiet roof top bars in midtown. Much more respectable tourist clientele here, which makes it a good choice for some conversation with a date. Also the cheese plate is a pretty large portion, so if you're with a group this is definitely the best snack to order. My husband and I threw our wedding after party here and had an amazing night. Despite the rain and only reserving the greenhouse-looking private space, we took over the entire floor and everybody had a blast. We paid for a premium open bar and the drinks were nice and strong. We returned to Bookmarks a few days ago to celebrate our anniversary and while the small outdoor rooftop area is as lovely as we remembered, the cocktails were horrid. The atmosphere here is great -- even on a rainy day, the inside room with wicker chairs is a really nice way to spend an hour before dinner on a weekday. But having had drinks from various speakeasies, I can't say that the drinks here are really worth the same price. They sound good on the menu, but the execution falls short. Drinks either taste somewhat watered down, or too sweet. I get that you'll be paying up as you would for any other rooftop bar, and admittedly it's a pretty chill tucked away little spot. The Library Hotel is a library themed hotel. Duh. It took me WAY too long to get that. But Bookmarks is the name of the bar they have on top. Came here for a brief meeting, followed by cocktail hour. For some reason, they didn't have menus and the waitresses just had to try (and fail) to recite everything by memory. Had a decent whiskey cocktail. Can't remember what else was in it except for a berry of some sort. The space is kind of limited. Not much room to move around and the bar in the middle right by the elevators gets cramped and has to serve the entire floor (at least three distinct event spaces). I guess it really does feel like a hotel bar. Maybe even a library themed hotel bar. read more

We've come here twice with my company for a networking/mingling outing, and we've been happy both times. Our group was small, but they gave us a nice area that let us have our own conversation without annoying anyone else (or them annoying us, cos come on, how could I ever be annoying??). The drinks are good, although I usually stick to the wine (lovely Shiraz), and the snacks have gotten better with time! The first time we went, it was a limited offering of chips and salsa and some cheese. Now, they've added a great slider and an even better calamari. I know these seem like simple bar foods, and they are, but Bookmarks has put something in their light and fluffy calamari batter that most places just don't have. Plus, hey, tentacles! Yum! The main reason for withholding my fifth star? The service can be spotty, and it is awfully annoying to go up and down the back stairs to wait for the one and only one bathroom they have. It seems odd given the amount of times I've come to this place that I have never reviewed it on Yelp. I made a point to come here when I was working in the Bronx; I still remember my reference professor from grad school (his name was Sergio) talking about this hotel and how crazy cool it was. Since it's unlikely I'll be a guest here anytime soon... might as well check out the bar, right? If you know me, you know I don't ALWAYS like to be fancy. I'm often a jeans and t-shirt kinda guy, and those are the places I generally prefer. 'Bookmarks' which - lets just admit its the cutest name EVER - is the rare exception for when I'm feeling fancy and I want to just grab an overpriced cocktail after work. And let's face it, they ARE overpriced. But it's Midtown, it's near Grand Central, and it's a pretty swanky place. The fireplace isn't ALWAYS roaring, but it's always a nice touch when it is. Jen S. and I just indulged and went there after my work shift tonight. It's nice when it's not super crowded - if it is, steer clear - but it's a great place to spend an hour and have one drink. It is very intimate and small - if you are looking for a hip place with music and a social scene, not the place to go. I went for "happy hour" with three pals at 6pm on a Thursday night and we still had to wait around 45 minutes. However, it was well worth it. It is very small so we cuddled around a small table, sharing half the space with another group, but but worked out well. It was the perfect cozy casual relaxed spot where my friends and I can chat to our heart's content. I can't remember if there was any music, but low volume chatter was perfect. Drinks - on the pricier side. All of my cocktails were 15 per and my friend's wine were 13 per glass. I didnt get a chance to look at the bill I' m sure my 2 cocktails, my friends 2 wines, about 5-6 beers for the other two and 2 app cost more than a hundred. Great rooftop bar at 41/Madison in the Library hotel. Bookmarks is on the 14th floor and is then segmented into various sections. I like the green and scholarly vibe of the roof. There is a regular bar but you can also sit at a table and a waitress for take your order. Our waitress was very efficient. As for the drinks, there are specialty cocktails with fun author/book names like Tequila Mockingbird (okay drink but I prefer more salt on the rim) and Under the Mango Tree (mango martini that is not strong at all). Bathrooms are one level up but there is only a single room for each sex so there may be some wait. I would come again for the convenience of location (near my office) and green rooftop vibe but not for drinks..although if you know huge literary nerds, definitely take them here. read more

A nice low key place to have a classy cocktail where you can hear the other members of your party speak. It's at the top of the hotel, and looks like it would be amazing in the spring and summer. Had a Jackie Collins and a Lemon Drop Martini. The only downside: drinks are very similar to their other sister bars. WIth different names. LOVE Bookmarks! I visited in June originally and when my friend came back to NY after being in Paris for a year I knew I had to take her. We loved the fun yet laid back atmosphere. The wine was pretty mediocre for such high prices but that's manhattan I guess. The cocktails were delicious- easy to forget they even had alcohol in them! Not weak, just the right mixture of ingredients. Also loved the goat cheese, sundried tomato and spinach flat bread pizza. To top it all off there's a great view of manhattan from the rooftop. While it lacks the buzz of other rooftop bars, it offers a more relaxing atmosphere, making it a great place to chat with friends. The service is friendly. Bookmarks is a pretty decent sized bar with an outdoor glass enclosure, rooftop access, and upscale ambiance. I was there with a colleague before an after-work seminar because I needed a snack to hold me over and had an hour to kill. We ended up being there for an hour and a half, each having 1 drink and splitting a quesadilla. We were seated right away in the enclosed area, but it took an extremely long time to order anything. If I had been there with friends (ie: planning to drink more) we probably would have left and gone somewhere else. We had been informed that our waitress was backed up, but the outdoor area was empty, and there wasn't really much going on. Another lady took our drink orders until our waitress got to us. I also believe that she was new, which is fine, but it's really up to the establishment to have enough people on staff (esp. if someone is in training/fairly new). We ended up being 30 min. late to the info session we were attending and the small quesadilla wasn't anything special. I had a delicious drink though! I can't remember the name..something on the grass?? It was made with Hendrick's Gin. It is one sneaky drink, but I knew it the moment it hit my lips. This cocktail will put you under if you aren't careful. I will definitely be back to try it again. I think I had an off experience. read more

Conveniently located bar in the Library Hotel. This is a nice rooftop bar with a decent sized outside seating area. It has is usually crowded so expected to chill at the bar and wait for a table. The drinks are a bit pricey but the cocktails are delicious. The only two things I did not like about this lounge is the cramped elevator and the location of the bathroom.
