The staff was quick to get us a menu and take drink order, but getting someone after that for the appetizer or a knife for spreading the pretzel butter, or the bill... that took a while longer. Homemade pretzel was good and pretty shape - mustard better than the spicy butter. And they didn't bring any knives to spread the butter (which was a hard ball). My friends and I walked it around happy hour on a summer Wednesday. While it was packed, there was definitely a decent amount of space, including table service. We actually found a table in one of the hallway "nooks," which felt a bit more intimate. The old fashioned was strong and perfect for the GC-area vibe. I love this place... Decor and design is wood heavy, but it gives it that amazing autumn feel. Wine selection is pretty good, notes are savory (grilled cheese sandwiches from what I remember) and the bartenders are extremely friendly. Plan to return. Truffle Grilled Cheese!!! If you don't get anything else it a must try. It's the perfect balance of cheese and truffle flavor and the bread was perfectly toasted. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this bar. Located on the second floor, it offers a great ambiance but can get uncomfortably crowded. This place is right next to Grand Central and was bustling with people on a weekday evening around 6 PM. I'm sure it's a go to spot for office happy hours. My friend and I were gladly able to find a table as the bar was quite crowded and you couldn't hear yourself speak. There's not much of a food menu so I would only go here for extremely light appetizers or just drinks. My colleagues and I were looking for a place to grab some drinks before heading to dinner. Since we were in Midtown I decided to do a Yelp search for cocktail bars in the vicinity. Bergamos stood out because the pics looked good and it was opening around the time we would all be meeting up. While it didn't have a lot of reviews to work off of, we decided to take a chance and head over. Bergamos is virtually invisible from the street; it's located off the lobby of 335 Madison Ave steps away from Grand Central with no external signage on the outside of the building. The space is huge for a cocktail bar in Manhattan - the bar is essentially a large open space with a number of seating arrangements (tables, couches, etc.). A large bar along the back wall serves as a focal point. We situated ourselves on some couches and explored the menu. Typical cocktail bar offerings: beer, wine, cocktails (of course), and a nice variety of snacks and bites. We had two rounds - I started with the spicy pineapple margarita which was quite good. It was smooth with this peppery accent which complemented the sweet. I also had the Zinger which was smooth but had just the right amount of bite. We also ordered some barbecue popcorn with almonds which was nothing amazing but tasty nonetheless. Service was great; our server was really friendly and we never felt forgotten despite the space filling up quickly. Overall, Bergamos is a great find. They're pretty new (just opening this past December), but I'm sure once word gets out they're going to be a super popular spot. I would definitely return here for drinks again. read more

Had a pretty decent experience here. The bar is in my office building so it's very convenient to get to but expect a loooot of people coming through for the Thursday happy hour. My friends and I got the toastie. They were delicious. The one with soppressata was my fav. We also got some pretty good drinks. The espresso milkshake was a bit of a disappointment though. I wanted to love this place. I found it on yelp while searching for cocktail bars and the decor looked nice. I was super excited to try this place out and went here with my boyfriend and a friend. My friend and I both ordered the cocktail called second wedding. My boyfriend ordered an old fashioned and then, later on, a whiskey sour. Suddenly, upon drinking the cocktail, I felt very sick. It got worse, and I eventually threw up. This is abnormal for me. One cocktail is well below my alcohol tolerance level even if the cocktail is strong. I don't believe it was from the alcohol as I can certainly handle one cocktail. When I got sick, we were kicked out. The waitress was rude to us and tipped herself 20% on the tablet she brought over to our table. Even before she kicked us out, the service was lacking and borderline rude, stepping up to completely rude after I got sick (again, after one drink). We all left and my friend, who ordered the same drink as I did, got sick shortly after. Being a male that is bigger than me, a small woman, it must have slowed down the reaction. Before he got sick, I was left wondering what went wrong, as one drink wouldn't cause this reaction in me, but knowing that he experienced the same thing just a little bit later after we were kicked out (also after just one drink) makes me think something was up. I know this drink had egg whites in it. I've had plenty of cocktails with egg whites at other bars and have been completely fine. I can't 100% say what it was, but my boyfriend, who ordered an old fashioned and then a whiskey sour was completely fine. My one star review is indicative of the way they treated us when they kicked us out (after getting sick off of one drink!), tipping themselves 20%, and generally rude service in addition to the experience with the cocktails themselves. read more

My jaw dropped when stepping into this enormous space. The ample seating, the slightly retro decor, old school-y and modern and a fantastic spot for drinks. Come quick, before people realize what're missing out on! I had the Zinger, a gingery-slightly smokey concoction with brandy, honey and lemon. It was sweet with a namesake ZING. My friend ordered the second wedding. It was a citrus-y and refreshing drink. Nice if you're not looking for anything too sweet. I also tried the espresso milkshake. Super spacious bar near grand central. The space is insanely large for a bar in NYC. It's elusive though - there isn't a sign on the street and it is in a building that looks like an office or fancy apartment. Came on a Monday around 7pm, and it was quite empty (but I think that it opened pretty recently, and not many people know about it yet). The mood is soothing, with soft music in the background, candles on the tables, semi dim lighting, and a light buzz of conversation in the background. They have a selection of classic cocktails, beer, and specialty cocktails, as well as some bar snacks. I had the Second Wedding cocktail. It was pretty good and very easy to drink, but nothing special. Great citrusy, almost creamy, flavor and not too sweet. If you're looking for something unique, try the zinger! Sleek, dark wood, decor with a very long bar for easy access. There is table and sofa seating but this feels like wasted space because of the crowd standing 3 deep at the bar. The acoustics and noise from the standing crowd make conversation between seated parties impossible. The cocktail menu is not particularly innovative and the beverage size is ridiculously small. I have never seen a frozen drink served in a 4 oz tasting glass before. And hard cider was served in the can, no glass at all. If you want to catch a quick drink with a couple of people you have no particular wish to actually converse with, belly up to the bar. read more

Went to Bergamo's last night and it seems to have taken a lot of the criticism to heart. The actual building is easy to find. At the top of the stairs is a neon sign that says "Bar" with an arrow pointing to the nondescript door at the right. Once you get there, the hard part is over. They have a nicely curated selection of beverages. The employees could not have been nicer. I didn't have any of the snack foods - but the popcorn seems to be their most popular item. I had two glasses of wine and my companion had two club sodas - $43 something - which isn't bad. We split the check and I think we each paid about $30. It was a little pricey, but it was worth it. We were able to have a conversation at a normal decibel level which is unheard of! I hope this bar remains a "secret" as it's elegant and adult. We left at 8:30 just as it started getting loud.
