This is a great winery located in the rolling hills of Paso Robles, California. Many of the people here came over from Justin Vineyards another favorite winery of mine in the area. My buddy Rick was adamant about us stopping here and tasting the wine before heading back to the Central Valley. I have to admit the wine was very good, and the English Guy in the tasting room (sorry forgot his name), was an amazing story teller and salesman. His stories about the region and the weather of that area and the varietals they sell, made you want to buy the wine alone. That said, even though the wines were very good, excellent in fact, I personally didn't feel like shelling out $85 for a bottle of wine. Look, I paid much more than that for an Opus One, a Camus Cabernet, a Cain Five, etc., but at this time there are just so many really good wines that you can get between $13-$25 all day long. Don't get me wrong, if I had an extra grand in my pocket that I wanted to blow, I would have bout a few bottles. read more

Now this is the ICE BREAKER: Wanted to join the wine club since we like the wine enough and we were looking for a new wine club to join in Paso Robles after a long hiatus. As a wine club member YOU DO NOT GET ANY DISCOUNTS TO ANY WINE BOTTLES U PURCHASE / WHAT U GET IN THE SHIPMENT. This is the first time I heard of such a place lol. We've join clubs everywhere and it's always 15-20% off the original Bottle price. THIS WAS A BIG NO NO for us, I feel like okay if we join, we're just paying for the comp tasting and either way u add the tastings and u compare that to the cost of the wines u get without discount... it's still a huge difference. It feels like you'll just join the wine club to use the facility lol. Also we are not from Paso so we won't be coming to their tasting room every weekend. IDK, for me If u love wines and been to wine clubs, this is a deal breaker. The wines are good but I also found wines in the area that are better. [I'm visiting the wineries as mentioned in "The Definitive Paso Robles Wine Guide", as curated by Josh of Vinohead. This curated list is an excellent cross-section of the renowned wineries in Paso Robles.] One of the "quintessential" wineries of the Paso Robles wine region is Booker Vineyard. The winery was named for the two orphan brothers Claude and Dick Booker who acquired over 1,200 acres on Paso's west side in the 1920's. Upon their passing they donated their entire state to charity, which Eric and Lisa Jensen purchased 100 acres of the property in 2001. For a while they produced wines with Saxum and L'Aventure as well as sourced grapes for said wineries. Starting with 2005 the Jensens started producing wine under the current Booker label but the grapes are considered some of the best in Paso Robles as they still currently source grapes to Saxum and L'Aventure as well as other wineries like Villa Creek and Linne Calodo. The philosophy to their winemaking is minimal intervention using organic and biodynamic farming practices. The winery achieved organic certification in 2021. Booker is the Jensen's flagship wine brand with a focus on Rhône varietals. Their secondary label "My Favorite Neighbor", itself a tribute to his first mentor and former neighbor Stephan Asseo of L'Aventure. The focus of MFN is cabernet and Bordeaux blends and will be the focus for a future visit. Standard tasting is $40/person but waived with a 3 bottle purchase. There are additional experiences the vineyard offers, with the most notable being the cave tasting located inside the cave lounge and the terrace tasting located in a private terrace further uphill from the main tasting room overlooking the vines. My friend and I initially wanted to do the cave tasting but "settled" for the terrace tasting ($100/person) since we had inquired about doing the cave tasting but got no response from the booking manager. Our tasting room server, Sarah was able to squeeze in a little tour including a visit to the limestone cave that has the natural rock and striations in the earth. For our tasting Sarah combined bits and pieces of the club release and comparative tasting. - 2019 Ripper (100% grenache). Named after the wine being given a nickname "bloody ripper" for it being a good wine. The most "elegant" wine in the portfolio as well as being the most primary fruit-driven (also partly aged in concrete tanks). Think candy red fruit but much different from Beaujolais. - Comparative Oublié ("forgotten") tasting: 2019 (34% grenache, 31% syrah, 27% mourvedre, 4% tannat, 4% petite sirah) vs 2018 Ext (40% grenache, 30% mourvèdre, 30% syrah). A GSM modeled in the style of Chateaneuf du Pape (most famous southern Rhône appellation). This is a grenache-forward GSM blend with more emphasis on the red fruit. Being from a warm region I think of it as more of a candy/jammy red fruit. - 2019 Vertigo (48% syrah, 27% mourvèdre, 3% grenache, 2% viogner). Named for the steepest hillsides that grow the GSM grapes. A portion of this wine is fermented whole cluster and stems are fermented along with the grapes to give more tannin and spice. A syrah-forward GSM so black fruits are more prominent in the blend with mourvèdre giving it some structure. This was my favorite wine of the tasting. - Comparative Fracture tasting: 100% syrah 2018 vs 2019. Named after the high content of limestone in the soil used to grow syrah as limestone tends to fracture rather than crumble. Black fruit galore. The terrace is a place that one can envision staying the whole day sipping wine in. It's literally mid-slope overlooking the vineyards and next to the Bocce ball court (another unique tasting experience). It's semi-private in the sense that more than one group can be in the same room but it's more private than the general tasting room. Here's the thing... if you've also been to L'Aventure I can say that Booker and L'Aventure offer the equivalent experience but Booker is better if you prefer a more "masculine" take on Rhône varietals whereas L'Aventure is more preferable if you like a more "feminine" take. I'm not saying that one is better over the other but your wine tasting will be highly dependent on which style you prefer more. All the wines here, even the most "elegant" option are very unapologetically "in-your-face" for even a Paso wine since most if not all Paso wines are very fruit- and alcohol- forward compared to anything from the Old World. I actually prefer the "feminine" take and from purely a wine preference standpoint I prefer L'Aventure. BUT I will say that out of my four trips to Paso Robles the Booker terrace tasting is actually one of my most favorite wine tasting experiences in Paso and I will highly recommend this to anyone who wants to do an elevated tasting anywhere in Paso Robles. I'm all in for any experience that serves to educate the consumer as much as possible. read more

This review is based on coming to Paso for at least 14 years of wine tasting. While there are too many wineries to visit each one, we like to come to familiar ones and ask for recommendations. This trip, we visited Grey Wolf/Barton Cellars, which led us to Venteux, which led us to Lone Madrone. Mary at Lone Madrone recommended Favorite Neighbor Winery, but they were closed this particular day. So, she then recommended Booker Vineyards because they own the property, and they were open this day. She called ahead and let them know my wife and I were coming, and they said they could accommodate. Once we arrived, the property is stunning, and the tasting room is modern and architecturally stunning. However, upon check-in, a young girl was pouring our first tastings and promptly took us to a table in the tasting room. No option for one or two tastings was given. My wife and I usually like to share a tasting and decide to get a glass or two of what we each like. And, usually purchase bottles based on what we like. We were not given an option on the tastings, and felt trapped into two tastings at $40 each. What the heck?! Most wineries are $20-$25 per tasting, and are usually 6-10 tastings. Booker offers 4 tastings. All of the girls serving guests were under 21, and telling guests the different notes and tastes of each wine. How do they know how each wine tastes if they are not of drinking age?! It was all very scripted. Bottom line. If you want a bougie, pretentious experience, with over-priced wines, then this is your place. If you want a real experience, with good to exceptional wines, look elsewhere. The wine + the food. We really enjoyed the basic tasting ($40) at Booker with Gipson. He led us through the lines and though he's still learning about the history of wines and houses, he had a well built up knowledge of processes, grapes, and harvesting which we often found lacking at other vineyards. The bread and butter and the olives were amazing. Top 2-3% of olives and top 5% of bread and butter I've had anywhere -- InBloom really killed it. Hopefully we can come back soon because after this beautiful stay in their brand new patio we ended up buying six bottles and joining their wine club. Heads up though, food is only available on weekends and you can only do the tasting you pre-reserve, no onsite upgrades allowed. read more

This winery is absolutely beautiful! The wine is delicious, but it's also perfect for amazing photo ops. However, the thing that put our visit over the top was the tasting room manager, Micah!! We came with a group for a bachelorette, and Micah was so accommodating even before we came to the winery. He adjusted my reservation last minute for me when I was in a panic, and he also graciously waived the bride's tasting fee. After our tasting he then took our group down to the caves where the wine barrels are. It truly made our visit and he exceeded all of our expectations. We can't wait to come back!! Nice setting and decent wine. The service was slow or they were understaffed. The main problem is the price. They are the most expensive tasting in Paso. They also require a 3 bottle purchase to waive the tasting fee, which just feels greedy. The view is nice, but for the same price I'd go with DAOU. Other wineries have better views, wine, and service, so I'm not sure why this is the most expensive winery in Paso. read more

We discovered this winery from a restaurant owner who recommended a My Favorite Neighbor wine called Harvey and Harriet that was well priced and delicious. Turns out Booker has yet to open that related tasting room. So, we were in for $40 tastings knowing nothing about the place. Jenna was fantastic and shared a lot of information about the winery. I was hungry and grabbed a chicken taco that was quite delicious. The wines were very expensive and so we paid for our tastings and moved on. Many people know the Oublie from being named a top 10 wine years ago, but I'd encourage everyone to pickup a bottle of fracture, it's truly special and perfect to enjoy when you want to celebrate. I wasn't sure about coming to this place based on the reviews. Pretentious and pricey? Luckily I tried it out anyway and had a good experience. Their tasting is pricey compared to other wineries at $40, but they have great wines. As a Syrah lover the price was worth it for me, but depending on your preferences your experience may differ. I ended up taking home some bottles of Oublie, their GSM, which is probably the best GSM I've had from Paso Robles. So the wine itself is top notch. The location and ambience is great as well. The tasting room is nice and modern. We sat outside and that area is great as well. Dry nice and peaceful with some wind to cool off in the hot Paso summer. Pets and kids are not a problem, so it definitely did not seem like a pretentious and snobby winery to me. The service was good, possibly a bit scripted but the wines speak for themselves. As others said most of the people serving wine are younger women, I'm not sure what the story behind that is but it seemed like the waitresses might be related. Maybe the service is a family matter? Anyhow, I liked this winery and I'll likely return in the future. read more

Stayed longer than expected, purchased more than intended. We've been members of Booker for maybe a decade or more by now and despite being members have not visited the actual winery in years. We made it a point to visit this past weekend and was hosted by "Z" or Zahrmina (sp?). She walked us through the property, the new caves, tasting room and members lounge. Their dog Ella followed us everywhere as well. There is not much else to say except that we had a really enjoyable afternoon and wondered why we didn't visit sooner. I've been wine tasting 20 yrs in this area. There are good , great and blah experiences. It used to be free to taste , then $ and $$ and $$$. My brother is a member so I came to taste for free. $100 for 2 pple is embarrassing if you actually pay. If your tasting is more then a bottle of wine compared to the 10oz you just poured there is an issue. Ladies working there super nice. No one was there upon arrival. Each small tasting is poured and the girl left for 10 minutes to chill with her friends. Wine was ok. These are Napa prices but not Napa wine or experience, I'm not trying to be rude to this winery I'm just saying go elsewhere for 1/2 the price. . read more

Visited Saturday 4/1. Basically two stars for effort and a great attitude. Booker makes some of our favorite wine and we were so pleasantly surprised to learn that the tasting room just reopened after being closed for seven months. They had run out of wine to sell because what they make is just so darn good. They were able accommodate us with an almost immediate appointment time. The person who hosted us was pleasant and knowledgeable. But they had no want to sell and the tasting wines were a hodgepodge of this and that. Examples being a 1-time only Pinot that borrowed a great name from the past, RLF and an offering from their just departed assistant winemaker. There was nothing to taste (or purchase for that matter) and in our opinion way too expensive for what was poured. So disappointing read more
