I love Boojum.
Granted, as a homesick Californian in Belfast I may be a bit biased, but thankfully it appears I'm not alone in my enthusiasm. Boojum has given me faith that it *is* possible to have a casual restaurant in Belfast that doesn't serve overpriced, predictable, unhealthy crap (you don't have to go very far in any direction on Botanic to see what I'm talking about). With vegan options too! I put this place in the rare category of "Read Food" restaurants in Belfast. And probably the only one its class and price range.
The food is as close to a Californian taqueria as I've ever seen in this part of the world. I've chatted with the owners, and they actually spent a fair bit of time in the southern US and Mexico, so they really do know what they're doing. I think that every time I've been there I've come across at least one other homesick American.
As far as the food goes, Boojum claims that their food is all homemade, handmade, from scratch everyday and I believe it. As a vegetarian I can't vouch for the meats, but the beans, peppers, condiments and homemade salsas are always perfectly prepared. The burritos are generously large, properly constructed and wrapped (it's a delicate art), and fantastic value for around a fiver. This is really what all food should be like. The decor is pleasant, staff always friendly and they have Cholula! Mexican beer and frozen margaritas are a welcome recent addition as well.
A few very minor nitpicks that probably only matter to real burrito snobs. They don't have a griddle, so the tortillas are steamed instead of heated on the griddle as they would be in most taquerias. This makes them a bit sticky, and they can't add the cheese onto the tortilla as it heats. The rice is also a bit bland - no Spanish rice option (although too many places use chicken stock for this, so it's often a no-win situation for vegetarians anyway). I'm not a fan of their homemade hot sauces. I think they use malt vinegar - must be adapted to the Irish palate. But they always have Cholula and a couple of other real Mexican hot sauces on hand. Finally, tap water is served in tiny plastic cups from behind the counter. I always feel bad going up and asking for refills because the staff are normally quite busy, although they've never hesitated to give me more water. I don't think it would hurt beverage sales if they put out self-service jugs of water and cups.
I would love to see their menu expand. The lack of a griddle and short-order cooks holds them back a bit - but how about mole sauce? Or a tofu-based veggie option? But I suppose these are pie-in-the-sky dreams. In the meantime, I'm so grateful we have Boojum. read more
